A timeshare of Payne and Kris Dunn at the point would allow the Jazz to bring Keyonte George along at a reasonable pace in Year 1.

after what we saw in summer league? Why? Sexton starts. George backup unless Sexton is moved

Cameron Payne has shown good defensive prowess at times with Phoenix and is a more natural fit at point guard than Jordan Clarkson or Collin Sexton, who are both combo guards that are best utilized for their scoring.

wouldn't you have to pass occasionally to be a combo guard?

They have 4 pg's. They aren't going after Payne

Now, he’s not just coming today, but should the Jazz find out that the likes of Kris Dunn and Collin Sexton aren’t cutting it, (https://thejnotes.com/2023/09/13/is-the-grade-for-the-utah-jazzs-collin-sexton-fair-or-foul/) then you could make a case for Payton, who historically is a solid passer and a very good defender. He could also be an option if you end up trading guys like Dunn, Talen Horton-Tucker, and maybe someone like Sexton or Jordan Clarkson. Whether those players get traded for future prospects or draft picks, or as part of a larger trade to land a major player at some point this season; Payton could come in and be a big addition to the club.

Dunn and Sexton are better and George will be. Also Talen is pretty unique

Danilo Gallinari

need another old 6'10 guy?

A strong, defensive-minded wing could help you with that. He’s drawing some interest from other teams ever since he got released by the San Antonio Spurs, following a trade from the Cavaliers, but if he’s still available later in the year, the Jazz would be wise to look into his talents.

a wing/SG they can use especially once The Bum is jettisoned

So which one is it? Well, we’re not sure, but we’ll find out soon enough. One of the things that will help us decide if this team can compete or if they’re going to fail is their lineups and how deep this team truly is. The lineup isn’t set in stone yet, so the rotation isn’t figured out yet either, but for the sake of the article, let’s assume the starting lineup is Kris Dunn, Jordan Clarkson, Lauri Markkanen, John Collins, and Walker Kessler.

why would we assume Dunn is starting? He maybe should but I'd be surprised if it's not Sexton with George behind him. Hopefully Agbaji at the 2

Dunn makes the lineup due to his defense and passing, as he’s the only point guard on the team that specializes in that. Everyone else is starting because they’re the best players at their positions on the team.

The Bum is the worst player in the league for my money

This is where it gets tricky, as Taylor Hendricks, Brice Sensabaugh, and Keyonte George all should get minutes, but then you have guys like Luka Samanic, Ochai Agbaji, Simone Fontecchio, Talen Horton-Tucker and Johnny Juzang who have all something to offer.

Simone, Talen weren't playing until after the trade deadline so they are probably out. Simone was probably their worst player except The Bum. Taylor and Brice shouldn't get minutes unless they earn it. Stars are there for a reason. George already showed something. I expect Hendricks will. We'll see. Samanic looks like a rotation piece too. Juzang is on a 2 way so he won't be a rotation player. Agbaji should start

Hendricks missed all off-season action and so his skills are not yet proven to be what they’re hyped up to be. Sensabaugh may not even be truly ready until the winter, and Agbajia, Horton-Tucker, and Juzang are just going to have to bide their time.

be shocked if Agbaji isn't playing

MacMahon mentions the Jazz will be players in the trade market, (https://www.slcdunk.com/2023/9/24/23887227/utah-jazz-are-high-on-keyonte-george-and-is-collin-sexton-is-a-6th-man-zach-lowe) and it makes sense. Utah has so many rotation-level players that it doesn’t make sense to leave them on the bench all season. When you consider how many picks they’ll be making, over the next 10 years, they have to be active to continue upgrading at each position. If they don’t make trades and their draft picks supplant their starters, they’ll lose assets for nothing. That’s not something I could ever see Danny Ainge doing

Both Tim MacMahon and Zach Lowe mention that the Jazz are high on Keyonte George and MacMahon said that Keyonte George is the “most ready, he looks the best” of all the Jazz rookies.

Look, you have to draw the line somewhere, and there is probably always going to be arguments for those players right on the line, but Clarkson has an argument to be nowhere near the line. From across those websites listed above, here are the players that barely made the cut:
Grant Williams
Gary Payton II
Markelle Fultz
Bruce Brown

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope
Alex Caruso
Nic Claxton

all guys I'd take over The Bum. The fact that he is even in the league makes him overrated

The Utah Jazz stayed relatively competative compared to the expectations to start last season, and many will point to the jump into stardom for Markannen, but they fail to recognize the jump that Clarkson made as he transitioned into not just a starter, but a player being asked to run the offense. He responded to the additional responsability by averaging over 20 points per game for the first time in his career, and becoming a much better facilitator, with 4.4 assist per game. Up from his career average of 2.5 assist coming into the season. Clarkson has evolved his game to become one of the smoothest scorers in the league. Someone who is truly capable of scoring at every level, while also continue to grow as a player who can lead an offense under Will Hardy.

Smooth certainly isn't the way I'd describe Dribbling the shot clock out and shooting a prayer that is usually a brick! :facepalm

It’s an interesting note from the podcast and definitely matches what we saw during NBA Summer League (http://www.sbnation.com/nba-summer-league) when George lit the court on fire. It’s also a reminder that it’s a shame that Taylor Hendricks and Brice Sensabaugh couldn’t play, not just because it’s a chance for fans to watch them play, but also it’s great experience leading into training camp. George was tasked with being a playmaker, and he showed just that. It’s going to be interesting as the season goes on if George works his way to that starting role. If he continues to show his ability to score at three levels, along with the impressive assist numbers he showed, it should be sooner than later.

I'd guess by the trade deadline that he is the guy

MacMahon mentions that the Jazz look at Collin Sexton as a sixth man. The Jazz had him in that role most of last season so that’s not a surprise. Sexton quietly had a great offensive season for the Jazz having the most efficient scoring line of his career. If he comes into that role again, the Jazz know what they’re getting, and there’s no doubt he can do that again. The only issue is there are going to be a lot of mouths to feed. The Jazz have new rookies, a new starter in John Collins, and there’s going to be a lot of improvement across the board. The story of this season will be seeing how the team changes and develops as the season goes on.

can't see him not being the starter. He might eventually make the most sense as a 6th man but The Bum as your starting 1? :facepalm

Sexton will have to make an impact on the court. Too often last year, he played well enough but just didn't stand out. This year, he needs to make himself known every time he steps on the court. He must find ways to impact the game outside of scoring. If he can prove valuable in other areas of the game, he can avoid the worst-case scenario.

He stood out to me. Plays hard at both ends of the floor. Biggest question is can he stay healthy with that body and the way he plays?

The Utah Jazz made the right call to trade Rudy Gobert when they did. Not due to his apparent decline that was sudden and dramatic, but because he was making too much money and the team couldn’t really improve around him. So they traded him to the Minnesota Timberwolves for a host of picks and Walker Kessler.

the only reason you make that trade is because of what they got in return. They make the Cavs trade and keep Gobert they would have been one of the top teams in the league. You improve by subtraction

And while Raptor Stats may be dead thanks to corporate malarky, the fact is Gobert was still the highest-rated player on the T-Wolves team last year when it came to defensive excellence (among eligible players). Gobert is far from done, the narrative around him is just wrong and overblown. Sure, he’s not a good fit next to Karl-Anthony Townes.

remains to be seen. Towns was out most of the year

So the three names that do make sense for the Jazz are LaVine, Murray, and Herro. LaVine is the kind of guy who could do some serious damage on his own, as he’s a near-elite scorer from almost every level. He’s got good court-vision and if he was the starting point guard for the Jazz, his assist numbers may double.

It’d also give the Jazz a bonafide scorer to pair with Lauri Markkanen and Jordan Clarkson, giving the Salt Lake City crew a shot at winning the west with arguably the best-scoring trio in the league. Sure, the defense will suck, but you’ll see a lot of 120+ point games from the Jazz, so that’s something.

What makes Allen really unique as a player is that he has the dribbling and passing to be able to play the point guard position, and if the team lands Herro or wants to role with Clarkson as the starting two-guard, Allen would be able to fit in seamlessly alongside either player.

He’s a starting caliber guard (https://thejnotes.com/2023/09/21/way-jordan-clarkson-doesnt-start-sg-utah-jazz-starts-pg/), and both MacMahon and Lowe agree, but you need a lineup around him that brings out his best, and that’s why Agbaji doesn’t work. He’s a shooter, who can play some solid defense but he doesn’t fit next to Clarkson and the other starting three. Someone has to set up the offense and it won’t be Kessler or Collins. If Agabji is the guy you want to start, you have to sit Clarkson.

Agbaji is the only one that makes sense at the 2. The Bum at the one is ridiculous. He's ridiculous period

In just about every way, Ryan Smith is the antithesis of the typical NBA owner. He frequently sports a backward baseball cap, including in a recent Zoom interview with ESPN. At 45, he’s young enough to still get on the court and play basketball, as he did in a shooting contest with Utah Jazz coach Will Hardy last week (https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/38496656/inside-utah-jazz-bold-new-tv-plan).

– via Tim Bontemps @ ESPN (https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/38496656/inside-utah-jazz-bold-new-tv-plan)

too old to be wearing the oversized baseball hat. Thought he looked like an idiot before he ever owned the team.

And he’s the rare person who grew up rooting for a team as a child and then went on to have the business success that allowed him to purchase that same team as an adult, as both he and NBA commissioner Adam Silver have pointed out. All of that, Smith says, helped him decide that the best thing for his franchise moving forward was to bring Jazz games back to over-the-air broadcasts on local channel KJZZ, in addition to a subscription service to stream the games, beginning with the 2023-24 season (https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/38496656/inside-utah-jazz-bold-new-tv-plan).

– via Tim Bontemps @ ESPN (https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/38496656/inside-utah-jazz-bold-new-tv-plan)

“I was a fan,” Smith told ESPN from his office overlooking the courts inside the team’s Salt Lake City practice facility last week. “Like, I know the problem [of] going, ‘Why is my game blacked out? Why am I dealing with this? Why can’t I get my game? I’m on the road traveling somewhere. Why is this so complex? Where’s my streaming option? Is it League Pass?’ “To be honest, it was just a ton of friction. And second, I believe that the RSNs, and the local cable, there’s going to be a lot of movement in that area, and I personally don’t think the Jazz need to be part of that roller coaster.” (https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/38496656/inside-utah-jazz-bold-new-tv-plan)

The problem that we think gets overlooked, is that offensively, there isn’t much difference between Sexton and the aforementioned Jordan Clarkson. Sexton is younger and less expensive and provides the same skillset as Clarkson. Not only that, but there’s nothing to say the Jazz won’t run both men at the same time, or stagger one as the team’s sixth man. Sexton may be better off the bench, there’s certainly reason to believe that, but there’s also reason to believe that the team may move him as well. It’s really unclear what Sexton’s future with the Jazz looks like at the moment, but assuming Sexton does stay, Chiesa believes he’ll start alongside Jordan Clarkson, Lauri Markkanen, John Collins, and Walker Kessler.

Then, according to the former coach, we’d have bench players including Kris Dunn, Ochai Agbaji, Talen Horton-Tucker, Taylor Hendricks, and Kelly Olynyk.

Based on what we saw last year Talen is a 1 and despite some big games from him I'd put him behind 3 other guys there. You may have forgotten he wasn't in the rotation until they traded away a bunch of guys. Hard to imagine George not being at least a backup after summer league. Dunn was great but I'm not convinced he will play. Might not even make the team! Agbaji should start. The Bum off the bench until he's traded. Samanic could be in the mix as well

No, the reason Holiday was moved was because the Bucks needed to match salaries with the Blazers and Lillard. That’s it, no other reason. He’s still a valuable guard, and can still make an impact on a team to land him, and that’s why the Utah Jazz should seriously consider going after the two-way player.

maybe he was moved because they replaced him with someone else? :facepalm

Not only that but for the Utah Jazz specifically, Holiday provides everything they’re lacking at point guard. He can lead an offense, he’s a good passer and his defense has made him one of, if not the best defensive guard in the league.

not a shooter and not on their timeline. Yet to hear they want him but he'd certainly be a big pickup

https://thejnotes.com/2023/09/28/the-utah-jazz-may-not-worry-about-having-a-conventional-point-guard/

The team has options, none that fortify the position but everyone has seemingly been tossed about. Jordan Clarkson, Collin Sexton (https://thejnotes.com/2023/09/26/the-utah-jazzs-sixth-man-pick-is-beyond-obvious-for-anyone-paying-attention/), Talen Horton-Tucker, rookie Keyonte George (https://thejnotes.com/2023/09/26/keyonte-george-may-utah-jazzs-breakout-rookie-year/), Kris Dunn, and even Johnny Juzang have been mentioned a time or two. But none of them is the complete package. Most, save for Dunn and maybe George actually pass, and so far, only Dunn plays good defense.

Sexton looks like a modern pg to me. Learned a lot from Conley. Injuries would be my worry with him. The job is George's. Just a matter of time. Can Dunn continue to hit open shots? Can Talen hit shots consistently and set up his teammates? Can The Bum not suck? Juzang?

It’s also fair to say that this affects Ochai Agbaji’s starting position at shooting guard, a position that many have rumored he’d have due to his shooting and defense. But if the goal is to have multiple ball-handlers to take the ball up the court, then that would presumably leave Agbaji to serve as a backup for Lauri Markkanen and Clarkson.

having a couple ball handlers is only reason I can see not starting Agbaji but he can bring the ball up court too

Now, that thinking will fall on a lot of different players. There are five guards who will be in play to start as the lead ball handler for the Jazz at the start of camp: Collin Sexton, Talen Horton-Tucker, Kris Dunn, Jordan Clarkson and Keyonte George.

Not Juzang? As funny as that is I'd certainly rather have him with the ball than The Bum. To think anyone could think he's a 1 or even good is hard to fathom

Sexton is a lighting bolt with the ball with decent shooting numbers, but he hasn't consistently flashed the traditional point-guard-like set-up abilities.

I thought he did last year. Conley taught him a lot

Clarkson made a huge jump in playmaking as a starter last season, and at 31, he's still a one-on-one maestro.

Yeah a real maestro. Dribble for 20 seconds while ignoring the other 4 guys on the floor with you, throwing up a prayer and a brick.

Dunn is coming off the best six weeks of his NBA career, and is the most traditional point guard on the team. In his 22 games with the Jazz, he averaged 13.2 points, 5.6 assists and 4.5 rebounds, and shot 47% from deep. If that is at all sustainable, he'll be in the mix for a bigger role.

we'll see if he even makes the team. George has to play. You'd think Sexton has to play. They'd probably like to showcase him and Talen for a trade anyway
