US soccer fans are spoiled by all European soccer coverages on cable channels.
it would be nice if ESPN wold show some highlights. Its crazy to me how little they mention MLS even though they air games. Even the more local sports channels hardly cover FCD or Houston down here. Fox Sports SW is airing the game... on tape delay today. Then again, at least its being aired.
AS for on the field, I am glad the Brek Shea CB experiment seems to be over and that he has been moved to LB.

I never liked Shea at CB, I always thought he was a good winger. Putting him at LB will take advantage of his offensive abilities more.
And it's embarrassing how ESPN doesn't even mention MLS at all. You would think with a possible NFL/NBA lockout looming you would try to throw MLS in the mix. Not to mention there's only so much Baseball and 24/7 lockout coverage you can talk about during the summer. Atleast show some clips of the more prestigious teams, show some clips, have a MLS weekly show every week. Even Bass pro fishing and poker have more coverage on ESPN

Re: 2011 MLS thread
Toronto FC battled to a draw with Galaxy at BMO tonight. I caught most of the first half. Galaxy missed a goal off the goal post.
Real Salt Lake took down Colorado 1-0 in the 3rd minute of extra time to remain unbeaten.
Tomorrow night the MLS game of teh week will be on ESPN2 with expansion Portland opens their remodeled stadium against Chicago at 11pm ET.
Its a pretty cool stadium. They converted a minor league baseball park into a soccer pitch.
they have a cool 3D stadium tour on their website that I really wish every pro team in this country had. You can click on any seat and see what the seat view is. Its kind of similar to the street view on Google Maps.

Re: 2011 MLS thread
Portland/Chicago is starting now on ESPN2.
Their crowd kicks ass. Very vocal. Its raining so the game might get sloppy depending on how good their drainage system is.
-
Re: 2011 MLS thread
I am going to go ahead and say Portland is going to rival Seattle for best fans and atmosphere if they keep this up.
Their 8k strong supporters section sang the national anthem and they have been very vocal.
The officials are out causing havoc again by disallowing a clear goal by Kenny Cooper.
-
Re: 2011 MLS thread
holy shit! they have a guy with a chainsaw that runs it on corners and cuts a slab of wood off a log when they score! that shit was funny

Re: 2011 MLS thread
Portland wins 4-2.
Calling it now, the Portland Timbers have the best supporters section in all of MLS.
This is why the Northwest Triangle (Sounders, Timbers, Whitecaps) feud is awesome.
I'm going to have to agree.
Its crazy how into it all those 3 groups are.
I can wait to see BC Place reopen with their new roof.

Re: 2011 MLS thread
RSL is setting itself up to be called the greatest MLS team of all time if it can take out Monterrey and then compete well in the Club World Cup.
-
Re: 2011 MLS thread
I'm going to the Chicago Fire vs LA Galaxy game. I don't want to come off as a fanboy but I am disappointed beckham is suspended for the game.

Re: 2011 MLS thread
Man, I was watching Portland game. I luv fans there. What's names of Colombian players that play for Portland? Thank you!!I def want to go to a game there one dayy.. When does RSL plays Monterrey? I am hoping Red Bulls will get a win tn..

Re: 2011 MLS thread
Lol thanks a lot.. I'm surprised we haven't seen a mls team in copa liberatores
-
Re: 2011 MLS thread
So Benny Fehilaber to the MLS! Most likely Chivas USA since they have the #1 spot in the allocation order which is a stupid rule.. Fehilaber should be able to join any team he wishes..
Anyways still a great signing.. He's a very talented player and the quality of play in the league is slowly improving. I'm almost sure fellow american players such as Eddie Johnson and Demarcus Beasley will be coming back to the MLS after failed stints.

Re: 2011 MLS thread
Name top 5 players in the MLS this year
From what I have seen
Mongragon
Aguedelo

Bunbury
Chuimiento

Re: 2011 MLS thread
The Sleeping giant Thierry Henry has awoken! 1 goal and 1 assist although he could've easily ended up with another goal or 2.
The Red Bulls absolutely crushed San Jose. Red Bulls missed a bunch of chances despite scoring 3 goals and they dominated the ball and constantly bombarded San Jose.
Kaiteng I feel bad for you.. Toronto is pure shit. I would say their glaring hole is a striker but their defense is pretty damn bad. It's a shame they have a pretty good stadium(for MLS standards) and a great fan base.

Re: 2011 MLS thread
holy crap what are these super powers Portland has at home?
They are already up 1-0 vs FCD 15 min in off a ball that hit the post then went off the back of Kevin Hartman

:lol
man... they bring it back to 3-2, miss a shot off the post and then the refs fail to blow a call on an obvious pk. :facepalm
I guess I can take solace in the fact that Dallas started off last year horribly as well and had they not lost Hartman to the attack from Henry they still ended up having an outside shot at the SS late in the year.
These losses have been frustrating though. They are beating themselves more than anything.

Re: 2011 MLS thread
Union still on top.
Union play some disgusting soccer.. I can't stand when teams just park the bus and put every back to defend and hope to get a lucky goal off a ricochet. It's a shame since last season they played exciting soccer although they sucked.
They have the offensive players where they don't need to play pussyball. Le Toux is as good as anyone in this league and Mwanga and Ruiz are good forwards. Not to mention Mondragon is a huge upgrade over Seitz. If this was Chivas USA I wouldn't mind as they suck and they're trying to get some results.
But if it's working..

Re: 2011 MLS thread
Came back from the Galaxy vs. Fire game. I was disappointed Donovan and Beckham were out, but the game was still enjoyable. The fire had a bunch of chances to win but couldn't capitalize. Toyota park was a cool small stadium and they had a good fan base (I would say it was around 80% filled.)
To put this in perspective, I walked out on a Bulls game last year in the 2nd quarter because I found the game fcking boring. The fans were disinterested and the game even had playoff implications for the bulls. The Fire fans on the other hand were into the game and the atmosphere was better, and the Fire suck lol. If the Fire were on the Bulls level the stadium would've been rocking.

Re: 2011 MLS thread
You just can't compare soccer crowds to basketball ones. There is no real supporter groups in basketball, and a majority of its crowds are too "casual" to cheer without guidance from stadium speakers. I was in some Raptors games this season, and unless there is Vince Carter, Chris Bosh, or Hedo Turkoglu on the other team the crowds are always "dead".
Soccer teams have supporters to cheerleading and overall crowds are more willing to participate no matter which opponent their team is facing with.
Oh I understand, I guess I'm still bitter on the bulls game last year. I went to a Knick game last year as well and that team was well under .500 and the fans were into the game.

Me and my brother went to the Memphis game last and MSG was rocking despite the Knicks sucking dick. Never seen 20k fans so excited to see David Lee drop a double double in a double digit lost
You didn't perhaps go to that game?
Aron Winter needs to learn to use what he has to their full potentials instead of waiting somebody else out there to fit in.
Ha good luck with that! Winter is a pure Ajax man and that means he strongly believes in Ajax's general philosophy on how to play the game. Conforming tactics to the available players is something that goes against the grain of the fundamentals of the Ajax philosophy.
I agree it's probably not the right way in a competition like the MLS were teams don't have their own academy, but that's not going to sit right with an Ajax bred coach like Winter.

Re: 2011 MLS thread
What an arrogant move by Monterrey. Sub out 2 players within 20 minutes after being up 1-0. LOL @ it backfiring.

I've missed the past 4 games or so, so I'm ecstatic for tonights game against the Timbers. I'm ecstatic that Leanardo is done for the year. Dude was one of the worst CB's I have ever seen.

I've only seen one Galaxy game this year (against Chicago ) and their backline looked awful. Hejduk needs to retire.
I'll be tuning in for tonights game. Becks and Donovan are playing?

I'm not sure what backlines Arena has used for the last handful, but Franklin - De La Garza - Omar - Dunivant is a pretty decent backline, they just lack size besides Omar.

Re: 2011 MLS thread
Does Real Salt Lake have any affiliation with Real Madrid? If so, then GO RSL!!
not really.. It was an attempt to get a "European" sounding name to RSL. Many teams in the MLS have european names. I don't get why some teams use FC when they should be using SC.. Anyways alot of clubs here have many un-american team names to say the least..
DC united, Sporting Kansas city, Toronto FC, Chivas USA, etc..
Personally I like it.. It sounds much better and it's better than the typical american sports teams with their generic team names. <insert city>, <insert random animal> is basically the makeups for many teams here.
