Is it possible..

That this year's tournament will be more 'normal'? And by normal I mean that the correct teams win and there are less great upsets like VCU last year?

So my friend's theory is that due to the NBA lockout, a lot of one and dones ended up staying in college and so that certain teams like UNC and Kentucky are stacked with players they wouldn't have had if the NBA lockout didn't occur last year. Does this theory have any merit?

I think there is a pretty clear cut top 5-8 teams this year and those teams are the 1 and 2 seeds. That doesn't mean some 3-5 seeds can't and won't make a run, but I think the top tier of teams this year is quite a bit better than it has been the last two years. I think the past two national champions were two of the weaker ones we've seen in college basketball in a while. However, I don't think there's much difference between the rest of the field this year as the last couple of seasons.

I personally think this tournament will be pretty chalky by the Elite Eight but it's March Madness. There will be upsets but I think we'll see most of the teams that were the best throughout the course of the regular season be the ones who advance to the Sweet 16 an beyond.

Id say it will have lots of upsets. The two opening games already set the rhyme of this tournament. When underdogs make a comeback from 10+ down to single digits, fans will be cheering like crazy for them. This is a pressure most college players cannot handle, and will be overwhelmed.
