Hal Greer scored 38 points to lead Philadelphia to a 118-107 triumph over the Seattle Supersonics in the first game at Madison Square Garden, moving the 76ers into first place in the Eastern Division by .004 over Boston.
Greer broke loose for 18 points in the second period. The 76ers led 37-36 when Greer reeled off 12 of his team's next 14 points as they rolled to a 51-43 margin.
12 More for Greer
The Sonics cut the lead to 61-55 at the intermission but Greer hit for 12 more points in the third quarter. The Sonics came as close as three points several times as Al Tucker, who paced the losers with 27 points, kept the score close.
Bill Cunningham hit for 10 of his 21 points in the closing quarter to put the victory out of reach. The 76ers led 89-86, but Cunningham sparked a 22-14 burst, opening the lead to 111-100 and that was as close as the Sonics came.
