I don't like Sheldon Williams to much and what he's done, i wish you would have taking Brandon Roy or Rudy Gay atleast.
We went into the offseason with 2 needs: A pass first pg and a defensive big man.
There were no highly rated pass first pg, so we went for a big man.
Shelden Williams was Duke's all-time leading shotblocker and a 2-time NCAA Defensive player of the year, therefore Billy Knight pulled the trigger on Shelden. When Shelden started while Marvin was out with a broken hand he avg 6/6 and lead all rookies in rebounding while playing good positional defense. He will be ok. He may bloom later defensively ala Ben Wallace.
Seriously Chris Paul with the athletic wings (Smith, J Chill, JJ) and big guys that would run (Zazza and maybe an MLE signing) would look really good right now. Add a shooter or two and they'd be in great shape.
Nope they shouldnt have because Roy p[lays the same position as JJ. And splitting PG duties between both of them wouldnt work nor would be smart. JJ came to Atlanta and they tried to play him at PG. Didnt work out. So why would putting another player out of position there work? Then splitting time? Two players who arent PG's and wouldnt excel in those roles.
Meanwhile Sheldon Williams did things that Atlanta needed/lacked. Defense & Rebounding. We cant keep going back to the future with friggin draft picks. If you go back in time then realize the needs, the players coming out first. Sheldon Williams avg 19pts 10rbs 4blks per game. Playing a position Atlanta needed including depth. Its a no brainer he was the right pick. Give him time.
Avg 5pts 5rbs in 17mins this season. Carlos Boozer avg 10pts 7rbs his rookie year. Be patient.
They would've caught so much flak had they darfted Roy. Would've been hilarious. And like it's been pointed out many times, Roy wouldn't have developed nearly as much as a PG with the Hawks as he has with the Blazers as a SG. And having JJ share PG duties would've still held JJ back. It's basically lose/lose.
