Default 2002 Kings/Lakers series - Who was the better team?

Was watching some of the playoff games on nbatv lately. The series went 7 games with LA winning in Sac, but as everyone knows game 6 was pretty bad.

Was Sac the better team because they barely lost game 4 on an Horry buzzer beater in a game they were running away with, got jobbed in game 6, and barely lost an OT game in a game 7 that maybe shouldn't have happened?

Or was LA the better team because they fought back from a huge deficit in game 4 to win, took advantage of home court reffing in game 6, and won a series-deciding game 7 - on the road - with no real ref advantage to either side, in which the Kings choked horribly in OT, at home, which they arguably wouldn't have done if they were truly better, and would have won?

Easily the Kings. Sacramento was the better team not only offensively, but defensively as well. They were the better transition team by far, and they had much better chemistry. Lakers just got lucky that year with a bail-out game-winning shot by Horry. And also, the ref's wrongfully counted a Laker 3-pointer by Samaki Walker which came after the buzzer at the end of the first half! Kings should have won that series. What a pity.

I agree, but you can't say that around these parts. Laker fans take great umbrage at that.

Kings hands down. Lakers were my team back 5-6 years ago but Kings were the deepest team in the league easily. There whole bench brought something to the table and thats when Peja was going bonkers with his offense.

Horry killed Webber's(and the Kings) image in my eyes. If Kings would of won that game then Webber would have a ring and be recognized as a leader who took his team to the top. Even when he was came back injured they were still an elite, but the Suns were gaining ground and just becoming a powerhouse. But I remember the Kings still contended with the Suns/Mavs/Spurs up until the day C-Webb left. I think they'll regret that decision forever because they actually were still an great/elite team and still had another 1-2 years to give it a shot.

Well then watch out. Here comes hotsizzle and gang to have you wacked! You never go against the family!

...but props to you for admitting the home-court reffing. Most fans of any team don't do that.

I'm inclined to say Sac may have been better because of game 4 and 6, but then I think about game 7. If you're the better team, do you lose deciding game 7 at home, airballing shots in OT? Deciding game is when truth comes to light, right?

Its a tough one.

the Kings were better
but not by far, because obviously LA had the weapon to fought back

the Kings chemistry back then was just amazing
it was so fun watching them play, Bibby with the screen by Webber and the 3
Divac showing how a big man can pass and flop
Christie being nasty on defense
Peja showing the stroke
Jackson coming in as the 6th man bringing energy

Lakers got bailed out by a 3point shot
and got bailed out by the ref in another game

they obviously had the talent to fought back given those opportunity
but it was about the Kings that year

6 years down the road, the SA and Suns series would be looked at just about the same

the Suns is the new Kings

they had their confidence beat
they should have closed it in game 6 and they didn't
they shouldn't have lost game 4 and they did

it's hard to take those tough beats against a team like the Lakers
because when you do, they would only take full advantage of it

At home, with the crowd erupting behind them til the buzzer sounded? Fighting to OT?

I don't buy that.

Even if they did, that Laker team would never get their confidence beat, no matter what?

Perhaps thats what makes them better?

Has anyone considered the possibility that the better team is, by definition, the one that won?

Have you ever considered the amount of pure, buttfuc*ing luck that can go into a basketball series? Or hell, a series like GSW-DALLAS involved little luck, it was a blowout of a series. But I don't think anyone could say GS is a better team with a straight face.

I guess you could make the distinction that the team who plays better basketball wins, but even that could be a stretch to say it happens 100% of the time.

The point of playing basketball, in the case of NBA anyway, is to win. The idea of a better team is very subjective, and the only objective way of judging is to look at who wins a particular game or series.

Now, the Kings played the Lakers in a 7-game series and the Lakers won. Arguing that the Kings were a better team is pointless, as they would've won had they been.

by this logic, you clearly do not believe in the concept of an 'upset', as even if a lower seed wins, it can't be called an upset as the better team won.

in addition, you clearly do not believe injuries have any sort of impact on a game.

i'm sure you're really fun to hang with during the NCAA tourney:

dude, the 16 seed beat the 1 seed!!!!!!!
SomeBunghole: so? the better team won
