Default Zo = future HOF?

Quote:
H.O.F. Watch - Alonzo Mourning
By Dime Magazine

Every day for the next few weeks we’re gonna take one active NBA star with at least arguable Hall of Fame credentials and break down his chances of getting into the Springfield, Mass., hoops mecca. We’re looking at not just past accomplishments, but also how a player’s career realistically projects for the future. For a full explanation of the process, click here. Today’s candidate: Alonzo Mourning.

ALONZO MOURNING (15th year, Heat/Nets/Hornets)
17.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.8 blocks per game

Why: Alonzo’s on-court resume is impressive enough without the extra credit he’ll get for being one of the game’s well-known good guys and getting ultimate respect for coming back to play at a high level following a nearly career-ending kidney ailment. He’s got two Defensive Player of the Year trophies, seven All-Star selections, two All-Defensive first team nods, one All-NBA first team nod, led the League in blocks twice, and he was a standout back when the League was stacked with a lot of great centers. He got his championship ring with Miami in ‘06 as a legit contributor. Zo is 10th all-time in blocked shots, and barring injury this year could pass Robert Parish and Shaq on that list. As far as average blocks per game, Zo is tied with former Georgetown teammate Dikembe Mutombo for sixth-best all-time. Speaking of college, Mourning one of the best interior defenders the NCAA has ever seen, blocking 5.0 shots per game as a senior with the Hoyas.

Why not: Since he played in an era of great centers, Alonzo will naturally be judged against his peers from that time. He wasn’t as reliable a scorer as Hakeem, Ewing and David Robinson, and Mutombo was a better defender. In his first stint with the Heat (pre-Shaq and Wade) as their franchise player, Zo only made one deep playoff run.

Our call: IN

Agree/disagree? Why?

My vote: In. One of the best centers in the game when centers were still the biggest part of the game in the NBA. Great all round player.

This is a GREAT thread.

Just checked out Zo's career stats; and I can say I can't think of anyone who could be considered more on the edge of getting in or being left out than Zo.

I mean you could really go either way.

Pro's:
Basically was a 20 and 10 guy the first 8 years.
Avg'd 3 blocks a game the 1st eight years.
2 time NBA 1st team all defense.
Career 52.7% FG.
Teams consistenly made playoffs
Got to the line a lot; which demonstrates some dominance

Cons:
Sharp decline after 8th year.
The 2 two all defense teams were his only 1st OR second teams.
Never showed increase of stats in his playoff performance.
Teams only once made it far in playoffs when he was a main contributor.
Career Avg aren't all that great.
Assts and Stls real low.

Final Analysis: There are many reasons to put Zo in and to leave Zo out. At the end of the day I would just barely put him in however, as he has capped off his career nicely with a senior ring in Miami, which seals the deal.

Zo will get in, not as a first ballot selection though. I see a Bob McAdoo type wait (maybe even Walt Bellamy type...)

I agree wholeheartedly. Once a guy goes in, he's in forever. Plus, we don't want to dillute the hall with anything but the very best of all time. I don't know if I consider him one of the best of all time or not.

I'm actually slightly leaning towards no. I don't think his championship year means much, because he's a backup role player (albeit a very good one). When he refused to play for his team, I lost lots of respect for him. (Was it Toronto or NJ or both?)

Like L.Kizzle said, leave him on the ballot for awhile and throw him in when there aren't better choices.

Hes got 3 DPOY and was a vital part of the pistons ring. He deserves to get in along with Mutombo
