Hayward does have trouble showing up for big games. Bulls, Thunder, and Grizzlies to name a few.
Also these people seem to forget that Dante Exum can't defend anybody anymore. It's perplexing because I've seen his speed and he is faster than most players in the league, but on defense he just can't stay with anybody

yeah he looks fast but maybe his lateral quickness isn't there which is what I said might be the case when everyone was automatically putting him into a big role behind Hill despite the way Mack and Neto played last year.

Bolomboy with a pretty good game. Leads thje league in rebounding. Maybe he deserves a look? Wallace off the bench with maybe his best game yet.

The NBA has lowered its salary cap projections for the next two seasons. In a January memo attained by Basketball Insiders, the league informed teams that the 2017-18 cap is expected to be $102 million with a luxury tax threshold of $122 million. For 2018-19, the NBA estimates a cap of $103 million with the tax line at $125 million.

Not sure if this is good news or not anymore.

Favors has started most of the time at the power forward slot, and served as Utah's backup center when Rudy Gobert needs a rest.

I'd bring him off the bench as Rudy's back-up. Maybe some minutes together depending on the match-ups and Favors play.

Hornets All-Star guard Kemba Walker didn't practice with the team on Friday in Salt Lake City due to illness and is listed as questionable for Saturday. Walker has been Charlotte's best offensive player by a wide margin this season. He scored 21 points in a November win over the Jazz at Charlotte. Last season, Walker scored 52 points in a win against the Jazz.

http://www.ksl.com/?sid=43072717&nid=304&title=what-to-expect-from-the-jazz-at-the-trade-deadline

Hill and his representation prefer to get to free agency,

makes sense but if he doesn't start playing better the Jazz may not want to pay him anyway or he may be wishing they would

Favors' injury situation means the Jazz don't really want to extend Favors to years after 2018 until they know he's going to be healthy beyond that.

If he came back after the all-star break looking like his old self they might because it would be better to do now than later but they may have already decided that they will need to move on from him eventually anyway with Rudy's dominance down low

Taking on long-term salary now doesn't make sense, even with the room they have in the short term.

Makes sense if it's the right players and their contracts are tradable. You will have a year to move salaries if you have to. With Hill's recent play I'm not sure you don't let him go though after giving up a lottery the Jazz probably won't do that and lose face.

I think it's likely that the Jazz make a trade this deadline, but I think the most plausible option is that it's a small deal designed to take advantage of their temporary salary cap space.

The fact that they have 13 million plus could make it a big deal or a few small deals

But teams have figured out a strategy to guard him effectively: don't. With Diaw on the floor, teams can just sink off of him to help with other actions, ruining the Jazz's spacing. A lot of teams haven't done this because game planning is limited in the regular season, but in the playoffs, they'll take advantage.

Spacing is the main reason he's playing and not Withey I'd imagine. Withey can at least hit a mid range shot.

It'd probably be best for the Jazz if they had a reliable power forward who could both defend and space the floor for Rudy Gobert pick and rolls, though the number of players who can do that are limited. Serge Ibaka might be available. Wilson Chandler's not a traditional power forward, but has indicated he's not happy with his role.

Maybe Chandler wouldn't mind if it was for one of the top teams in the league? He's be playing a lot with Hayward and/or Ingles where he wouldn't necessarily have to guard the 4 depending on the match-up. I'd do Ibaka for the right price even with no guarantee you can sign him in the off-season.

The Jazz also have to consider their likely playoff matchups. It looks likely that they'll play either the Clippers, Grizzlies, or Thunder in the first round, and all of those teams like to play with two big, strong bigs who could feast on smaller power forwards. Favors is a nice option there.

Favors from the last two years is. Favors now should be on the bench watching the fun

In the end, I think it's most likely that the Jazz address their long-term power forward situation in the offseason, including maybe in the draft.

Already have Lyles and Bolomboy though with 6 picks and a new CBA that allows two extra roster spots and 4 D-league assignments at a time I imagine they could pick someone for every position. I think they should give Bolomboy a shot before the deadline and see what he can do. He's rebound and play with energy like Booker anyway.

Last year, the Jazz acquired Mack at the deadline. That deal was actually essentially discussed and agreed to a couple of weeks before the deadline, contingent on what other moves the Jazz and Hawks did. If the Hawks traded away Jeff Teague at the deadline, or the Jazz were able to acquire Teague or Hill in bigger deals, than the Mack move wouldn't have happened. But since those moves didn't happen at the deadline, the Hawks and Jazz went to their plan B with Mack.

Hill would have gotten them to the playoffs

There's also some sense in not making any major moves, because the Jazz still don't really know how good the team will be when healthy.

From what I've seen they still need a few guys minimum even if healthy

Alec Burks has come back and is playing major minutes, but hasn't really been himself in terms of finishing around the rim.

He looks fine. Favors is the biggest worry and than Hill and Hood.

There's real statistical evidence that continuity, in both players and coaching staff, is of long-term benefit.

Yes there is but right now you don't have the right pieces and this year is different than any other year before with 1/3 of the teams with cap space. It will be a trade deadline like we've never seen. After the moves the Jazz made in the off-season, their needs and their cap space I can't see them not being very active. Now is the time to strike. Next year you may not have the money to put a team together like you can right now. They are close to the top teams and you don't know what will happen between now and June so you have to go all all in.

Rudy is a top 25 player period.

Hood won't get a lot better. He's a 6th man in my mind. Hopefully the Jazz figure that out soon!

The ESPN Insiders did give a few votes to some other Jazzmen, so I guess this is the honorable mentions: Enes Kanter, and Dante Exum. I think that the Jazz have a great mix of youth and experience now and if they can stay healthy, are going to be lined up for their first trip to the NBA Playoffs in a long time.

As we just saw from the last article. Next year will be a much different team. A few guys getting paid with a bunch of cheap guys filling out the roster.

So it turns out that the PF committee chairman is Trey Lyles, occupying 40% of all PF minutes (956 minutes).

That's a huge problem! He's been the worst of them by far in my mind and needs to go to the D-league and learn to play with a team. Diaw has had a couple nice stretches anyway and Favors isn't horrible he just seems that way because he's not near the player he was.

And of course, Bolomboy is getting a few garbage minutes.

He deserves a shot. I still think he looks too small but he's getting it done with the Stars and can hit the 3 which seems to be the main criteria with the coach after D which in Lyles case anyway doesn't apply I guess

Rebounding is not as much of a problem, because Rudy is really good at that and can make up for the poor numbers of Diaw and Lyles.

The wings and Hill rebound too.

It is also clear that Rudy being off the floor and Lyles being on the floor is usually going to be a problem or a disaster.

Yet he plays the most! The Jazz have to know this too

Rudy and Favors have been less effective on the offensive end; the spacing issues are real.

Which tells me they need to look to move Favors because he is hitting shots outside as much or more as last year.

Favors/Lyles is horrible and so is Withey/Lyles though most of that was early in the year. A healthy Favors maybe makes up some of that but considering he is mostly playing center now it seems like a big issue to me

Gobert or Withey with a wing is their best line-up not surprisingly and they haven't really used Hayward there. They need to go Rudy or Withey with 2 to 4 wings.

throw in what picks and assets you need to make it work and maybe a 4th team which could make it even mre interesting. Lebron gets his buddy, a vet pg that they like and another player with rings. They do pay more luxury tax in the process but that was part of the deal getting Lebron back.

The Knicks go below the cap, get a starting SG to start building a team around with Porzingas. Another young guy in Neto with a partial guarantee that could have a chance to start by next season too and a former top two way big that is still young if he can just get healthy but only has one more year on his deal anyway if he doesn't ever return to form. Get a small exception maybe 2? Not sure how that works in a 3 team deal. Diaw is expiring. Joe Johnson only has one more year on his deal. Might look at buying them out?

Jazz get a starting all-star PF to stretch the floor, rebound and score on a great contract. A starting 3 and D vet sg with finals experience locked into a friendly deal as well. 3 other guys that could be in the mix for rotation minutes on good deals as well. get a small exception and one or two other bigger ones. Open up a roster spot for a buy out candidate or a FA like Chalmers. Stay below the cap while setting themselves up nicely for the off-season as well with Love and Lee already locked up as well as Thomas on long term deals. I imagine Liggins is a team option or partial guarantee. Holiday will get a big raise and will probably be gone unless he really impresses. They could be flipped to a 4th team? No reason not to send Lyles and Exum to the D-league now!

I'd be open to it but I doubt it happens. They're saving him for the playoffs. Hopefully he'll earn his 22 million then! Favors and Hood need to stay on the bench though unless they show they deserve to start. I'd start Ingles at the 4 and maybe Alec even though he was off last night.

That fourth-quarter lineup mentioned above has been excellent for the Jazz, especially with Johnson at the power forward. How good? That lineup has outscored opponents by 16 points per 100 possessions, with a 120.3 offensive rating in 260 minutes. That's probably the Jazz's best look, and I think Snyder knows it. He does, though, want to limit Johnson's minutes and save him for the playoffs.

saving it

Dante Exum found his stride tonight, especially in the first half. His line didn't end up that great (11 points on 5-12 shooting, adding three assists and a steal),

looks great to me. I'd take that every night off the bench from him. He wasn't as good in the 2nd half though

He's an underrated passer,

by who? He can pass. The problem has been that if he can't finish or hit an open shot the pass isn't going to be there.

"Once the minutes went down, it really gave me time to focus on what I did. It wasn't just getting up shots, it was working on finishes, running off screens. It did give me an opportunity to do more."

"At first it was hard," Exum says about his minutes going up and down, "but then the biggest thing I learned was that you have to be ready."

See there are ways to get better besides minutes on the floor. You can see him doing some of the things other guys on the team do too which is from watching and paying attention to guys that have been successful in the league.

Burks wasn't down on himself after the game. "I ain't 100 yet. Sky's the limit. Killer. Unguardable. Dunk contest snub." Burks is a weirdo, but he's a really fun weirdo.

That's the kind of confidence Exum needs to have and you don't get that from continually playing bad. That's why the D-league would be good in my mind. Would love to hear the explanation on why he hasn't played there.

They really need to just stick him down there for a month or two and not even consider calling him back until his predetermined time is up. He needs consistent time in the D-League

Xiao Yao You

I think maybe even a short time could do him a lot of good if he could just go down there and dominate. I think a lot of it is just confidence. You could see see that last game as he made a nice play it just built on itself. But he does lack experience at any level so yes he does need to play and I disagree with those that think he should do that on the 4th seed rather he plays well or not.

While it will not require surgery, Favors said, the rigors of the NBA probably will not allow him to be at 100 percent before the offseason.

Finally the truth! Hard to believe a bone contusion could be that bad. Is Diaw's still bothering him? Is that why he is up and down? Isn't that what Hood was diagnosed as too? Certainly bad news but maybe someone would trade for him knowing he's supposed to be alright in the off-season?

They made only 38 percent of their three

take that every night no?

Our nightly power forward watch continues with Derrick Favors, who had his first 20-point, 10-rebound game since March of 2016. Probably not coincidentally, that's also just about the last time Favors felt healthy: he's had a litany of back and knee issues since April of last season

He looked healthy in the first pre-season game to me. Also a couple of weeks ago he was diving to the hoop like he used to. He needs to come off the bench if he can't do it nightly though.

I've heard a few people say that one of Favors' problems this season is that he had lost the effectiveness on his mid-range jumper. That's not actually the case.

He sucked last year after he came back from injury and I thought two years ago he had it going best out there. Last year he had the post game. Now he does very little inside.

"He has to bring it next game," Gobert told The Salt Lake Tribune. "He has to bring it every game now."

He just said he won't be 100% all year. Harpring was saying the same stuff. Didn't they get the memo?

Seeing as the Utah Jazz don’t have any big needs and their roster is full of young talent

They need bigs. Maybe Lyles and/or Bolomboy will be the answer but the jury is still out. They need a pg. Maybe Exum/Neto/Wallace is the answer but the jury is still out. Neto will probably never be given the chance because of their obsession with length though. Jerry would have loved his heart. They need wings. Maybe Burks/Hood/Exum/Wallace is the answer but Burks still has to show it over time/ Hood will have to be paid soon. Best available player if they keep their picks.

Utah is in a position to select projects who are two years away from being two years away and either plugging them into the D-League right away or letting them develop internationally. With the advent of two way contracts in the D-League next year teams will have a roster of 17 players. This should allow Utah to bring over young assets and develop them as their current salary maxed team—hello Hill, Hayward, Gobert—is able to continue to win on the court.

Still better off stashing guys overseas if they aren't going to be ready to help the Jazz if injuries dictate it. Bolomboy hasn't been given a shot despite playing great in the D-league but I still think physically he wasn't ready and should have been stashed overseas or in the D-league like Wallace who also doesn't look ready physically and Paige who was a wasted pick by inviting him to training camp. Still don't get that one! There will be other guys to use those 4 D-league spots on if your picks and Wallace aren't ready for them. The Spurs have a much larger roster than everybody because of all the talent they have stashed. Would be nice to have Hanlan instead of Diaw too!

The Utah Jazz could also send those picks away for players who can contribute now, but it’s hard to see how they can bring in that much salary while at the same time affording George Hill and Gordon Hayward going forward.

Rookie contracts will be doubled under the new CBA so they may be better off trading them away for future picks

Both Shelvin Mack and Raul Neto have apparently worked themselves out of the rotation and given that the Jazz have four point guards at the moment, it would seem quite logical that one of them could be cut to add the required space if the situation so called for it, especially if it were in a move that would make Utah even better.

Neto is cheap next year and on a partial guarantee so I doubt they just cut him. Maybe a trade.

Chalmers could be good but he's coming off an injury so who knows? They may want to consider a free agent workout like the Cavs had.

See what Nate does in the D-league first. Maybe Sundiata Gaines since he knows the system?

Jack isn't the best fit.

Always liked Landry but he doesn't hit the 3 so they won't want him.

Same with Sanders. Is he as good as Withey?

From Locke:

Dante Exum and Alec Burks combined tonight as a bench back court that added a spice and tempo to the Jazz offense. They both pushed and ran off misses and got the Jazz early opportunites.

There was one play in particular where the speed of those two was especially exciting. So many possibilities if Exum can ever put it all together.

Dante Exum had a really solid game tonight. He had 7 first quarter points and then added another 4 points to finish with 11 points, 3 rebound, 5 assists.

Mostly the first quarter. He needs to be able to do it for a whole game game after game.

Davis was never engaged and never a factor.

Looked like he wanted no part of Rudy. Pretty much like Hayward against the Warriors. All-stars? Rudy has out-played them all!

His block on Rudy at the top of his shot was impressive. Not sure anyone else in the world could have done that.

Joe Johnson was brilliant tonight. He has been really great in 3 of the last 4 games.

I thought he was good in the other one too. His shot was off but he was getting assists. Hopefully he can keep it up!

The Jazz might be really really good

Got a chance. Get it done Lindsey!

"For a guy nicknamed iso-Joe, he sure is a good passer."

Yes he is. Great at finding guys out of double teams.

it says a lot that Hayward was both able to catch this errant pass from Dante Exum and had the strength to swing the ball crosscourt with a one hand pass. You don't make this pass unless you're very confident and looking to make the pass right away.

Yeah it was nice. There was another play where I noticed he must have knew where the ball was going before it even came to him. Great to see him with that kind of court sense.

Salt Lake City was led by Jermaine Taylor and Marcus Paige who both finished with 23 points. Taylor has now scored 20-plus points in four of the last seven contests, averaging 20.6 ppg.

Taylor and Sundiata could be vets to look at for the end of the bench if they open up some roster spaces. They know the system.

For Snyder and his staff, the conversations about when to pull the plug on his starters carried on throughout the second half. But even with his team cruising, the coach was reluctant to go away from his regular rotations too early.

"It was something we were talking about, thinking about during the game," Snyder said. "We're a team that's blown a 20-point lead, right?"

In the end, Snyder said he felt confident with his bench, which contributed 64 points in the victory and felt good about the minute totals for his stars.

"I don't know if two or three minutes is going to make all the difference in the world tomorrow," he said, "but it is something we wanted to be conscious of and we got guys out."

It's more about a guy not getting hurt. Hood got injured at the end of the game. Last night was probably the quickest hook but he's got to get better at that.

after beating Cleveland in the finals you can get cocky

Shelvin never got in a rhythm either, going 1 for 4 but he did have 7 assists.

Maybe the biggest lasting impact here was that Gobert fouled out, and the Mavs had their way with the Jazz in overtime.

just hope he doesn't get hurt. They suck without him

Exum has an excuse for being careless: he's young and inexperienced.

So are the coach and the GM apparently. Why is Exum playing?

Diaw was very overmatched on the other end. He was mostly playing because Snyder ran out of players he trusts

yet Withey was there to do his best Gobert impression if he'd wanted him.

Dante Exum got the start, and struggled.

that was the first mistake. He'd been playing decent off the bench. Why not leave him in that role and let someone with experience like Mack or Neto start?

Shelvin Mack played 25 minutes, and did a better job of facilitation than Exum did, but went only 1-4 and fouled five times. He didn't have any turnovers, which is good, and did pick up seven assists and five rebounds, and two steals. I get why he got the majority of minutes at the PG spot, but also, he wasn't particularly impressive.

I'll take that line every night. They shouldn't need him scoring.

Quick storytime: Remember the Jazz's other really bad comeback loss this season, when they lost an 18-point lead to the Kings? Hill was inactive in that game too.

After that game, when the media came into the locker room, Hill was talking with Hayward about the importance of ending up with wins in games like that. Hill told Hayward that these were the kinds of losses that you regret at the end of the season, because one win or loss will probably make a difference in seeding. Hayward nodded and said he understood.

He may have understood but I've yet to see that all-star mentality from him. Barnes had it at the end for Dallas.

"It's the same toe he hurt earlier in the year," Snyder said of the injury that kept Hill sidelined for nearly a month earlier this season. "Just want to get him [healthy]."

the way he's been playing in the past few games I thought maybe he was about over it. Hopefully the all-star game will do it? He is their 1st or 2nd most important player as we saw again last night.

Jazz shooting guard Rodney Hood missed his fourth game with a sprained lateral collateral ligament and bone bruise in his right knee. He will be reevaluated this week to determine his timeline for returning to action.

I'd imagine he is out until after the break.

they're the 8th-best offense in the league thanks to that floor spacing and shooting ability, so it's not as if the Jazz let a bad opponent score too many points against them.

not great defensively though so the Jazz should have hurt them there and they didn't

George Hill was relatively good, too, scoring 22 points on 7-16 shooting.

take that every night!

I hope Lyles is better than a 1-for-5 3-point shooter.

the fact that he's been allowed to come in the game and miss shot after shot is amazing to me! It would be one thing if he was hitting shots but he hasn't all year.

Exum can't drive to the basket with centers already in the paint.

as with Lyles it's on the coach for playing him at all

Hill grimaced putting on socks, and quite frankly, I'm surprised that he's able to fit his foot in shoes with how his foot is shaped. It says a lot about Hill's skill level as a player that he's contributing at this level with his movement limited to that extent.

Now we know why he hasn't looked the same. Recently he's played well though so either the toe is better or he's getting used to playing with it more. I'm guessing it won't be better until the off-season?

"They have developed an identity, which we've tried to do as well," Jazz coach Quin Snyder said before the game. In this case, offense beat defense.

It's not something you can force. All of their bigs can shoots. None of the Jazz bigs can though they keep shooting! You got to roll with what you got or get players that do what you want. I understood the Diaw and Johnson pick-ups but they'd be better off with Withey rather he can shoot a 3 or not. How about trying Bolomboy? He's hitting 3's and blocking shots with the Stars?

Utah's normally reliable bench didn't score with consistency whenever Hayward and Hill left the floor.

Favors led the Jazz in scoring, but still only had 13 points, three rebounds, and one assist.

I thought he looked more like his old self again actually.

That's worrying, because the Jazz need to at least hang close on these matchups in order for the team to have a chance in what looks like the likely 4 vs. 5 playoff series this year.

Need to stop counting on Favors! He needs to come off the bench mostly at center until he proves otherwise

Trey Lyles has been playing his way out of the rotation recently with just horrific play on both ends of the floor. It used to be that his defense was a liability that could be counterbalanced by his offensive abilities, but right now, his offense is a net negative too.

He was 0-9 tonight in playing 13 minutes, and I suppose that I don't have to tell you that missing all of your shots is bad. But I'm more upset about his decision making on the floor: he's just not passing the ball ever, focused on getting points for himself.

Been like his all year outside a few moments! Send him to the D-league where he belongs and give Bolomboy a shot. That might wake Trey up?

I like that Lyles continued to take open 3-point looks while he was struggling

I realize you have to take open shots but that's one reason he shouldn't be playing. He doesn't make them very often. His gunning might be ok off the bench if he was hitting shots but he hasn't all year.

Utah is looking at a possible tax bill as soon as next season if Gordon Hayward gets maxed out and George Hill signs a deal starting in the $20 million range, which is plausible, and moving Favors could be one way to deal with that. So I think the Jazz have to be planning for scenarios where they explore a trade this summer, but I can't imagine that's Plan A at this point. There are too many questions about Boris Diaw's age and Trey Lyles' ability to step in as a starter.

Favors has to show he can play first. They might have to wait until the deadline next year. Hayward could opt in and they won't have to worry about it for another year. I think Bolomboy might be a better fit eventually than Lyles. Lyles might be a good gunner off the bench if he ever starts hitting shots again. Right now they need more guys that can play. Diaw will come off the books I imagine.

“He’s only 235 pounds; it won’t translate to the pros.”

that's my concern at the moment

He doesn’t always make the impact you would like him to considering his tremendous physical tools, as his defensive awareness is below average, especially for a senior. He can be a step slow to rotate over to help his teammates or will get screened too easily

I think this may be what is keeping him off the floor at the moment

If Bolomboy is able to knock down NBA threes by the end of his second year, his claim for playing time will only grow stronger and eventually force Quin Snyder’s hand.

He's knocking it down in the D-league. He needs a shot. Maybe he's the answer? The guys ahead of him aren't getting it done.

He was sure quick to guarantee $1 million; pretty rare for a late second-round pick.

Should have been stashed.

"The best indicator of what Joel is doing is the success he's had in the D-League," Jazz coach Quin Snyder said. "He's in and out with the team, with us for longer periods. But to me, the D-League is a big part of what we do."

Never has been except with Bolomboy. The question remains is why Lyles and Exum haven't been down there?

http://www.ksl.com/?sid=43214525&nid=304&title=derrick-favors-struggling-season-and-what-comes-next

The Jazz haven't been forthcoming about Favors' offseason, but something is unusual. "We knew that we were going to hit the season and have to manage Derrick and his condition," Jazz general manager Dennis Lindsey told 1280 The Zone last week. "There's nothing that's surgical that needs to be done or anything like that, but there were a couple of things that he needed to take care of in the offseason and it was clear that we needed to manage his way."

Before the season means before training camp? I thought he looked improved in his one pre-season game and has sucked since. So apparently he didn't manage things in the off-season?

Lindsey spun it as a positive, complimenting the work Favors had done to reduce his weight from 274 pounds coming into the season to 259 pounds now, but it's still unclear why Favors wasn't healthy from day 1. "Derrick put in really good work this offseason, but he was limited," Lindsey said.

Maybe it's not his weight as has been suggested? So this goes back to the off-season. This is worrisome rather he needs surgery or not. Sounds like they should have traded him in the off-season while his value was still high. Make him someone else's problem.

Favors' primary job is no longer that of starting power forward, but of backup center. Favors has played 938 minutes this season, and only 46 percent of them at the power forward spot next to Gobert. Fifty-four percent of the time, he's playing center without Gobert on the court. Snyder seems to craft his rotations to give Favors every single one of the minutes at the center position when Gobert is off the floor.

Stupid to continue to stagger their minutes instead of just bringing Favors off the bench

But popping isn't a natural fit for Favors, who's a career 33 percent shooter from distances outside of 3 feet.

this is at least the 3rd season he's been doing it. He had no post game before last year.

That's especially true given that Rodney Hood and Dante Exum will need big raises that year if they're to remain on the Jazz's roster.

Could we quit saying Dante will get a big raise? Right now he looks like he will be headed to Europe or back to Australia after next season.

The Nuggets would probably prefer to trade Darrell Arthur or Kenneth Faried instead, but those players fix fewer of the Jazz's problems. Arthur would be a nice bench bonus for the Jazz.

Arthur could be a nice get. He's now hitting the 3 ball too.

Jon Leuer has always been underrated in my eyes, but he's been playing an increasing role for the Pistons recently. Still, maybe he could be had. Perhaps you could convince Larry Bird to trade away the Pacers' Thaddeus Young?

nice options as well

every team has an average of 2.5 big men who just don't really get time.

Jazz have 2

you get the feeling that Alec Burks would be available if a team insisted on him

Better get something for him. He's one of their top players

I do think that it's likely that the Jazz are involved in a power forward deal at the deadline, with or without Favors. All of the Jazz's options have just been so inconsistent, and it's the most obvious space for improvement as the Jazz enter the break.

Don't think so necessarily. Johnson, Ingles and Hayward could play the 4 so they could look elsewhere like Tucker or Deron

Monday, ESPN's Zach Lowe reported that the Jazz have tested the market for Derrick Favors, seeing what kind of interest there is in the Jazz's starting power forward. The speculation has always been that a trade in the offseason was most likely, given the Jazz's needs at power forward now and current injury status hurting his value.

He's still going to be considered hurt until next season when he possibly shows otherwise on the court.

But the Jazz acquiring Williams would mean a somewhat drama-filled reunion with both Gordon Hayward and Joe Johnson, neither of whom he was best of friends with in their previous time as teammates. And why risk team chemistry for a middling increase in talent at the backup point guard position?

Thought Hayward was all about winning? I'll take Deron over Johnson at this point.

Gallinari's presumably the player the Jazz would prefer, given that he has more positional versatility to play the PF spot.

Talent wise he's preferable. Chandler can play the 4 and will cost less.

McRae would be an interesting fit. He's shown he can score in the D-League, but mostly through inefficient shots. He is long, though. He's 6-foot-6 and has a 7-foot-1 wingspan. Maybe he could turn into something if you could convince him to defend well and fit as part of a system? He's not good, but he definitely fits the profile of last-man types the Jazz have liked.

They are certainly more about length than talent. See Dante! McRae has shown some potential from 3 but at 25 how much could he improve?

Since the Jazz are $4.2 million dollars below the salary floor, that difference will be distributed among the players in a manner determined by the NBA's player union.

I guess keeping your current players happy is a bonus? But on the other hand, not using that money is a definite missed opportunity.

They get raises if the Jazz don't make any moves between now and the draft I believe. They go into the draft with the cap space which could be huge too! But this year could be their best opportunity so I hope they do something in the next few weeks. Their roster needs help. It's quite obvious despite all the hype about their great depth

"Our players, coaching staff and Quin [Snyder] have developed unique chemistry which are values based," Lindsey said. "Because of these relationships and the players commitment to hard work, we wanted no additions or deletions at this time. We look forward to having a healthy team and gaining more continuity over these next 25 games."

Could we stop with the Executive of the Year talk now? These guys won't be together next year. It would be one thing if they were all playing well but they aren't You were in position to make a big move and you stuck with mediocrity. As far as I'm concerned they need to start looking for a new GM and coach.

Tones is undeniably talented and makes some sense for the Jazz, but I hear that the Pelicans are waiving him after an off-court incident. That will undoubtedly cool the market for him in the waiver/free agency market. Jones is a bargain, though, making essentially the minimum salary.

Shoots the 3 badly like the guys they have so they might like that but an off the court incidendent means they won't touch him. Sounds like they won't touch anyone. Somehow they are happy with what they have. Wish I could say the same

Going back to the Pleiss trade
Remember before the season, when Tibor Pleiss was on the roster? Pleiss was traded to the 76ers along with 2 second round picks, giving the Sixers incentives to take on Pleiss' salary before waiving him.

Back then, the deal made sense because it allowed the Jazz to have the opportunity to resign either Derrick Favors or George Hill. But if those extensions don't happen (and if the Jazz don't sign a player for $13 million, which seems unlikely), it was a waste of two draft picks to dump Pleiss on the Sixers instead of just waiving him.

Of course, the Jazz didn't know then that Favors' injury situation would look so bad. And of course, it's only two second round picks, not a big deal for a team with a full roster. But it's a small misallocation of assets, certainly.

Had to do with the roster spot too. Could have stashed Bolomboy like they should have and sent Pleiss back to to the D-league and hope you could get something for him eventually like with Burke I guess. But it was nice to see them admit to a mistake for a change instead of continuing to hope things would change like with Trey and now with Dante apparently.

(Hey, did you know that Alec Burks, Joe Ingles, Joe Johnson, Trey Lyles, and Boris Diaw have only played 3 minutes together?)

Lyles and Diaw shouldn't be playing at all! They are going to look good if everyone is healthy?

How far this team goes this year is going to be based upon how well the Jazz starting five perform. Period. Lindsey put together a very solid and dangerous team. George Hill is having a career year. Rodney Hood can become the avatar of a thousand suns. Gordon Hayward is an All-Star. Derrick Favors is working his way back up to being his old self. And Rudy Gobert could be the Defensive Player of the Year.

Where do you get the idea that Favors is getting back to his old self. He said he's not this season. Him and Hood need to come off the bench. It's not all about the starters since Ingles, and now Burks and Johnson are outplaying those two guys.

Boris has a partially guaranteed contract next year.

[QUOTE]First, NBA teams will be navigating uncharted waters with two-way contracts. Speaking to a number of NBA front office people, some suggest two-way deals will be offered nearly immediately after the NBA Draft, while some suggest teams might wait it out through training camp. Whatever the case may be, teams will need to establish credibility with this first year of two-way contracts. Teams may bring two-way players up to NBA rosters for up to 45 days, but there is no guarantee they will do so. The minimum a two-way player can earn is $75,000, while they can cap out at approximately $275,000 if they are on an NBA roster for the maximum allotment.

I think the Kings did a lot better than the Jazz. Unless they sign Hill to an extension or do something at he draft with their cap space they blew it. They need help. Benching Lyles isn't enough. All I can see now is bringing Hood and Favors off the bench and shortening the rotation. They just don't have enough guys you can rely on. George Hill sat in his locker room stall Friday following Utah's win over the Milwaukee Bucks. He was relaxed and tanned, the product of a vacation during the All-Star break.

Rudy looked tan

Hill took advantage of the week off. The sprained toe that has plagued him for three months feels better. But he is at peace knowing it won't be fully healthy until the offseason.

That sucks. Maybe he will take the extension? His play will hurt his value. They've been saying 20 million a year and the extension is like 17 so it's not a huge difference and still a lot of money. Can't imagine he really wants to leave a team where he's played his best ball and has played his biggest role.

Exum was really bad in his 11 minutes, with four turnovers, zero points, and a -12 plus-minus that really fit the reality of the situation. He was out of control on offense, and when he was in the game defensively, the Wizards had a 141 offensive rating. Not great.

Rather have an inconsistent Mack, A non-lengthy Neto, or a non pg Burks. Exum needs to go dominate the D-league if he can.

Not that the Jazz have set the landscape ablaze with Hood at shooting guard. According to NBA.com, they've been outscored by 4.7 points per 100 possessions with the above arrangement but have obliterated the opposition by 22.2 points per 100 possessions when Joe Ingles gets the call.

Perhaps Quin Snyder will take it as a sign that he should keep the sharpshooting Australian out there to stretch the floor (43.9 percent from three) for a slasher like All-Star Gordon Hayward and the paint-packing pair of Derrick Favors and Rudy Gobert.

If not, it's tough to put Utah anywhere near the top 10 on this list unless the stats start to tell a different story once Hood returns.

I'm hoping once buyouts are done and they have finalized the roster that we will see changes. Hood certainly needs to come off the bench and probably Favors unless they get Bogut.
