the Jazz will begin the season without arguably their two best players

Rudy must have really impressed in the pre-season. Now it's arguable! :D

Diaw's passing and ability to create in the low post has made Gobert a better player

Rudy looked great in the first game next to Favors. Let's not get carried away!

Shelvin Mack entered training camp, in some regards, as a forgotten man.

In some ways? In every way I'd say. For anybody to have watched the team last season and write him off is a joke really. Hard to believe that clueless people get paid to write shit.

the 26-year-old has averaged 8.7 points and 3.2 assists coming off the bench in six preseason games, and seems to hold the edge over Raul Neto for the Jazz's third point guard spot.

I'd call him the 2nd best player on the team right now no question about it.

With Mack expected to see fewer minutes this season, Jazz coach Quin Snyder is demanding a greater commitment from the guard's defense.

At the end of last year, we needed different things from him," Snyder said. "Part of it is him adjusting to what's the fit and where can he add the most value. That's scoring opportunistically but really defending the ball."

They had the number 1 D with him starting.

While Burks has shown the propensity to be a good individual defender, his ability to get on the court could be tied to his ability to provide excellent team defense.

He needs to show the ability and willingness to take and hit threes.

which is why he will get traded

the Jazz's starting lineup will be George Hill, Rodney Hood, Joe Johnson, Boris Diaw, and Rudy Gobert. Head coach Quin Snyder's not too worried about his team's starters in the first game. "They're going to change throughout the year anyway," Snyder said.

looks like Hood is starting. Interesting that he said it will change throughout the year

Those players are all best suited for the role of second-side operators -- players that can successfully navigate a defense after some previous action has caused their opponent to be pulled out of position.

and that is what we saw with Mack

No surprise Lillard is doing all the damage so far. Thought we might of stuck Exum on him by now for a bit to see if he can slow him down.

Hill playing very well in his debut though and JJ is shooting well.

Going 1-7 late in the 4th didn't help either.

It is expected that Hill, Hood and Gobert will be mainstays at their positions as long as they remain healthy.

Hood has to show he can bring it consistently at the offensive end and play D. Was definitely impressed by Hill. When they were down you could see he was doing everything in his power to keep them in it. The leader Hayward and Favors haven't been despite the hype.

The Frenchman struggled, going 1-of-8 (0-for-3 from 3-point range) with no assists, three rebounds and five fouls in 32 minutes of play.

Not going to cut it and with other options there's really no excuse for him playing 32 minutes. Snyder is a genius? :confusedshrug:

Exum was pretty solid while he was on the floor,

Thought he mostly sucked. Neto should be playing ahead of him until he's ready.

The third-year guard from Australia only played eight minutes, while fellow point guard Shelvin Mack getting 15 minutes. Joe Ingles got 14.

Mack should be getting big minutes. One of their top players.

Snyder will surely play the guy who produces the best.

Believe it when I see it

It will be up to him to make the right decisions and ultimately up to the players to deliver.

that's the question. He hasn't shown he can do that yet

CBS Sports ranked the top 100 players in the NBA and six players from the Jazz made the list.

George Hill was the first to make the list at No. 78, followed by Trey Lyles who came in at No. 73.

Head coach Quin Snyder noted the difference too. "Our bench has to step up.

Maybe the coach needs to step up? :confusedshrug:

That he played so much in the fourth quarter (11:33) counts as a mistake, in my book. He played well enough in the preseason that I understand what Snyder was going for, but it just didn't work.

Success for Dante is playing. If he plays over 75 games, he is right on track. Hopefully he gets to close some of those games. Simple as that.

If he's playing and sucking the Jazz will lose games as they did last year with Lyles and last night

and probably most efficient game ever. Might be the best he's ever played or will ever play again.

There is no doubt that Rudy is going to get big time money. I think his lack of offensive production allows the Jazz Brass to negotiate with him to some extent, but after seeing the other numbers there is no doubt that he is due a ginormous raise.

"The Lakers high octane offense was just better than the Rockets high octane offense. This game, however, will involve defense as Utah actually plays both sides of the ball. Interested to see if Luke Walton can keep the Lakers rolling during their first road trip, in a tough environment. On the flip side, Utah may get Favors back and that is a huge addition for a team with aspirations of sneaking into the Top 4. Quin Snyder made some questionable substitutions during Utah's debut game, and it'll be interesting to see if that continues."

That means Johnson not only needs to knock down shots, but he also needs to stay active offensively. He proved he could do that in the opening night loss to the Trail Blazers with 29 points on 12 for 16 shooting from the floor.

While the Jazz don't need him to put up those kind of numbers every night, he definitely needs to be a major scoring threat in the absence of Gordon Hayward.

They have other guys especially with Favors back. Don't think he has to be a major threat every night.

Boris Diaw is the perfect veteran to have on this team. He is a wonderful leader and will provide fantastic depth. However, his scoring has been extremely limited in eight preseason and regular season Jazz games. Lyles may need to provide more of a scoring role as a backup big than many anticipated during preseason. Diaw has attempted a total of nine shots in the first two games, making one (11%).

Need to play Withey, Beto and Bolomboy if they aren't getting it done. Simple as that. :banghead:

Bolomboy, who impressed the Jazz enough to sign a three-year deal this offseason, had a nice statistical line for a player who only logged four minutes and eight seconds: three points, one rebound, one assist, one blocked shot and one steal.

As far as I'm concerned the supposedly genius coach needs to give him, Neto and Withey a chance. Exum, Diaw and Lyles are stinking up the place. Don't care about their potential if they are losing games.

Rodney Hood and Joe Johnson are probably best from mid-range, and run off wing pick and rolls looking specifically to get those shots and floaters.

Joe is one of the best ever from 3

the Jazz's offense has to start shooting the open 3-point shots that they get. That's especially true for the Jazz's spacing players, Trey Lyles, Joe Ingles, Diaw, and Exum. Too frequently, those players are turning down relatively-open 3-point attempts to try to force things inside, playing directly into the teeth of the opposing team's rim protection. Just shoot the ball.

You could see not guarding Exum at the 3 was part of their game plan. Until he shows he can hit it he be wide open

2. Jazz's power forward rotation problems

The problem is that the coach keeps playing them. Exum and Lyles should spend time in the D-league until they are ready to bring it every night. Diaw might be done?

I'd like to see more Neto and Exum, but Snyder's decision is hard here because it's only game three of the season. Given that Mack helped the Jazz significantly last year, do you give him much more time to figure out how he can make himself a useful player in a backup role? Or are these games too important now to waste on finding out the answer to that question? I might start with an in-between solution: keep Mack on the court, but have the ball in the hands of Exum and Ingles more often.

Mack should start next to Jill as far as I'm concerned. Certainly looked like one of their best players since February. They don't seem to worried about wasting minutes on others. When do we see the coach's genius? :confusedshrug:

When fully healthy, the Jazz bench includes a lineup of Exum, Burks, Lyles, Joe Johnson, and Boris Diaw. Their third lineup includes Neto, Shelvin Mack, Joe Ingles, Joel Bolomboy, and Jeff Withey.

Still hard for me to not see Mack playing if everyone is healthy. One of their best players. Neto, Ingles and Withey are better than Exum, Lyles and Diaw right now too and arguably better fits than Alec. So I'd look at the coach before blaming the bench.

Minnesota is still likely a year or two behind what the Jazz’s young core has developed into.

don't bet on it. Better coach and superstar.

the Nuggets are still trying to build their way up to becoming something special. They have some incredible young talent and some formidable vets, but they seem more like the team that can compete against anybody, maybe even give them a run for their money, but that will struggle to truly seal the deal in the majority of their contests.

that's the Jazz until they prove otherwise

While in no way, shape or form am I questioning just how impressive of a start Westbrook has gotten off to, it’s also important to note that in the Thunder’s three victories, he has been matched up at the point guard position against the likes of the Sixers’ Sergio Rodriguez, the Suns’ Eric Bledsoe and the Lakers D’Angelo Russell.

None of these guards are considered lockdown defenders by any means.

Bledsoe is known for D.

This season, thanks to Hill's quality (he was again the Jazz's best player on the floor for the third consecutive game), that wasn't going to happen.

arguable

Dante Exum played spectacular perimeter defense, including three blocks of Spurs 3-point attempts. His length and height means his closeout is uber scary. Obviously, the blocks are good, but if he can get a reputation as a perimeter closeout specialist, it may even dissuade opponents from taking shots against him.

It's not going to keep teams from watching him turnover the ball and miss open shots though. :facepalm

Haven't been much impressed with anything Lyles or Diaw have done so far. Hopefully when Favours gets some more run in his legs Lyles won't have to be playing 20+ minutes a game.

At the very worst though at least we've finally got a few more guys who can nail 3's with Hill and Johnson. Was a bit iffy on the Hill trade at the time, but he's converted me very quickly.

Haven't been too impressed with Snyder playing guys that aren't producing with their depth. i don't care about potential anymore. It should be all about wins. They beat Portland if he does things differently. Not playing Withey cost them the playoffs last year. They act like they are still tanking. Hayward will be gone if they keep it up.

Loved the Hill move not the other two so much but he is better than I could have imagined. He is the leader of the team. When the team isn't getting it done he has taken it upon himself to carry them. He might be as important or even more so than Rudy?

The Jazz (3-2) have held opponents to an average of 87 points over their past four games. They've seen an opponent top 100 points only once, an on a night when the Portland Trail Blazers' shooters were on fire. And as they sit, the Jazz currently rank 11th in the NBA when it comes to defensive efficiency.

So they have actually been average?

This one falls on the Jazz's bench, who played really well defensively last night against San Antonio, but didn't tonight. The Jazz allowed 139.6 points per 100 possessions while Dante Exum was in, for example.

Good thing he's such an offensive weapon.

By the way, I got a lot of comments on my Twitter timeline during the game that Snyder should have called a timeout at some point in those final three third-quarter minutes in order to stop that run. Here's the thing: there's not any evidence that calling a timeout stops positive momentum more than not calling a timeout. In 2011, a researcher at Bryn Mawr University found that calling a timeout doesn't lead to a halt in momentum any more frequently than not calling a timeout. The key quote: "The commonly held belief expressed by coaches, fans, and the media that timeouts are necessary to halt positive momentum is not supported by the data in this study."

Snyder is a genius and can do no wrong let's not forget. :facepalm

I've written an ode to George Hill already so recently, but his play over the last four games has deserved special recognition. For the fourth consecutive game, Hill was the Jazz's best player, scoring 25 points on only 15 shots, and adding six rebounds and four assists.

You just said that with Rudy in the game the Mavs scored 69 point per 100 possessions. You don't think it's arguable? :wtf:

This is way premature, but if Hill keeps this up, the Jazz are going to have to make a play at keeping him in free agency this offseason. He's just too good to let go.

Got to keep him. Maybe even over Hayward and/or Favors if it comes down to it. :confusedshrug:

the Jazz have some of the best catch-and-shoot shooters in the NBA, and when they are open, they are going to hit at a rate well over 40 percent.

we'll see. After Hill and the aging Johnson no one has proven that over a long time. Hood and Hayward are streaky at best. Ingles and Lyles are bit players. Diaw has looked old. Neto doesn't play. Burks doesn't like to shoot them when healthy.

When the Jazz play small with Joe Johnson at the four, the floor gets really wide open.

And yet with all these other options Diaw played big minutes. :wtf:

I didn't even know that I'm up for an extension.

If that's true you need a new agent!

Tony Jones of the Salt Lake Tribune reported in July that Hill's camp doesn't want an extension, and wants free agency. A re-negotiation extension could actually get Hill more money now, but at the possible expense of significant money later.

If he's willing to it get it done!

That's because Favors has two years left on his deal, making $11-12 million per year. If he chose to re-negotiate into a longer deal now, he could make more money (closer to his market value of $20-$25 million per year) in the next two seasons, and extend his financial security for longer. On the other hand, he might make fewer total dollars than if he were a free agent in 2018.

I believe the article about it a couple months ago said it was pretty close. With his injury history he might be stupid not to take the money now.

For what it's worth, it probably doesn't work out to give both Hill and Favors a contract restructuring given the Jazz's current cap space.

Sure it does. Might mean moving Burks and/or Hood but so what? Rudy/Hayward/Favors/Hill are the 4 guys you sign first if you can for the right price.

I wonder if Favors' ongoing health difficulties are giving the Jazz pause. After all, it may not make sense to commit long-term money to a player with worrying nagging knee problems. They may be waiting to see how Favors heals and maintains a standard NBA-starter workload before making any offers.

Makes sense. A running injury is worrisome in basketball.

"I think definitely," Snyder said. "You saw a guy who was playing through it, he's a pro. He's going to do everything he can to contribute. But he banged it right at the end of preseason, and you could tell a difference between preseason and regular season."

So why was he playing? It's not like you don't have other options. :wtf:

No, Trey Burke, Shelvin Mack, and Raul Neto did not adequately fill the void. In fact, they were collectively atrocious. Of all Jazz players who played in at least 25 games last year (13 in all), the three point guards ranked 9th, 11th, and 12th in points per shot. They ranked 8th, 9th, and 12th in PER. Things were bad at the point.

Now Exum finished with the worst plus/minus on the Jazz with a minus-19 after playing a season-high 29 minutes. Yes, that isn't very good. And he only went 3 of 9 from the field, finishing with seven points and a career-high seven rebounds. That stat line won't blow anyone away. It actually might disappoint. But it's the principle of that increase in minutes that should excite Jazz fans. In the first matchup with the Spurs, Exum played 14 minutes and scored just four points.

excited that the Jazz still don't seem to think winning games is the top priority? :rant

Mack also is at a matchup disadvantage when opposing teams switch bigger wings on him via the pick-and-roll, whereas Exum can body up on bigger guards.

and Mack will blow by them at the other end. Match-ups go to ways. Exum is being left wide open because he can't shoot. Disadvantage Jazz.

"I've always been a point guard, so when those guys come back it opens up me coming back to the point," said Exum.

Still, the Big Three of the Jazz all registered strong performances. Gordon Hayward led the team once again, dropping 29 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Rodney Hood also played well, scoring 20 points and hitting four threes. Derrick Favors added a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double.

Still, Burke was the unquestioned starter during his rookie season. And even if he lost time to Exum in his second season, he began that season as a starter as well. He began to lose time when coach Quin Snyder became unhappy with his defense.

His offensive game got worse as well. You got to put in the work to get better. He had always had everything handed to him and didn't think he had to.

But Burke is averaging just 4.7 points and 0.9 assists a night with Washington. He was brought in to be John Wall's primary backup at the point guard spot. But he's lost time to 6-foot-7 rookie Tomas Satoransky.

Not surprised. He's probably playing his last year in the league. The Chinese league is there for gunners like him that don't play D.

Jazz point guard George Hill has been listed as questionable on the team injury report, in advance of Friday's meeting with the Orlando Magic. Hill has missed the last two games with a thumb he sprained in Sunday's win over the New York Knicks. He has done a few drills in the last few days. He said following the loss to the Hornets that he's starting to feel better.

Good news. They should win tonite without him though.

Here's an example: last Thursday, the Jazz didn't hold practice, resting after playing a back-to-back. However, young draft pick Joel Bolomboy, who's not playing much, still could use some practice time. Because the Stars are located in Salt Lake, the team could send him down to the Stars for one day, allowing him to practice with the team, then could call him up to go through shootaround and be ready for the Jazz game on Friday. Obviously, travel time to Boise would have prevented that kind of quick send-down and call-up last season.

They could have still done some of that.

Reichert predicted that Paige would be a top-10 scorer in the whole league. Remember, though: because of the Jazz's waiver of him in training camp, any NBA team will be able to call him up, not just Utah.

He's almost certain to get called up if he does that. He was improved in the fall over summer.

Tyrone Wallace's waiver came as a surprise to D-League watchers, after all, he was the 60th pick in the 2016 NBA draft. But Wallace picked up an injury in a practice last weekend (the Stars aren't revealing the nature of the injury), and figures to be out a month or more. With roster spots at a premium, the team decided to temporarily waive Wallace. Wallace plans to resign with the Stars once he's ready to return to play.

cool! :applause:

And Joel Bolomboy, the Weber State product, will undoubtedly spend lots of time in a Stars uniform, bouncing up and down from the Jazz's roster as injuries allow. When he plays for the D-League team, he'll be one of the best players on the floor.

We'll see. He's got a lot to prove yet.

George Hill is missed.

So is Neto. A joke that he hasn't even got a look with Hill out and Mack and Exum up and down.

The first: playing Raul Neto in anytime besides the clutch. Neto's a little bit better than Mack defensively, in my opinion, unless he has to play against bigger point guards. Offensively, it's a little bit more of an adventure, admittedly, but he's happier to play off the ball.

Why can't he play in the clutch? He started last year. He can hit the 3. He gets after people defensively. Can run the offense.

The Jazz could also play without a point guard. I don't know if that's really feasible without Alec Burks against teams with any kind of speed at the point guard position, and Elfrid Payton's fairly fast.

With the depth you have you need to quit blaming your bench. Play Neto. Play Withey. Give Bolomoboy a shot. Quit playing guys that aren't getting it done! :rant

The 7-foot-1 Frenchman picked up his fifth foul with 10:14 to play with Utah down by two, but Snyder never put him back in the game.

With Lyles and Diaw manning the paint, the Jazz got roasted inside, particularly on the boards. In the final minutes without Gobert, Utah was outrebounded 14-7. More particularly damaging, the Grizzlies scored six second-chance points in that span, and that wound up being the difference in the 102-96 Jazz loss.

Gordon Hayward has been Utah's best player this season, but a strong argument can be made that Gobert has been the most important player for the Jazz.

Hill and Rudy

Even Gobert's performance on Monday, probably his worst of the season in a loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, he was a plus-10 for the game, the only Jazz player outside of Dante Exum to grade out as a net positive. Without Gobert on the bench down the stretch against Memphis, the Jazz struggled to get defensive stops and rebound the ball.

Both are good rim-protectors, and both are unique for big men in their ability to cover ground on the perimeter.

Having them on the floor in tandem allows the Jazz to almost always have a shot-blocking threat at the basket, a luxury few teams around the NBA can afford. Quin Snyder was also able to stagger his rotations to where either Gobert or Favors were on the floor at almost all times, enabling the Jazz to play almost 48 minutes a night with a great defender at the backstop of the defense.

Favors isn't the rim protector he gets credit for. Withey otoh...

Overall, he owned the Jazz's lowest plus-minus tonight, finishing with a -19. That's been a trend all season long, actually, and while some of it is undoubtedly due to the deficit of talent around him at times, it's not clear that Exum is currently an on-court plus.

D-league

The NBA are tracking some new stats this season: what they're calling hustle stats. Each team and player are being tracked in five new categories: screen assists, deflections, loose balls recovered, charges drawn, and shots contested. You can find those season-long stats here.

Tonight, multiple players and coaches commented on how it seemed like the Rockets were getting the 50-50 balls that led to second chance opportunities. And guess what, they were right! The Rockets picked up four loose balls, while the Jazz just got one. Beyond that, the Rockets also drew a charge (the Jazz didn't), and picked up nine deflections against the Jazz's six total.

On the other hand, the Jazz contested more shots tonight, by a score of 72-60, and also picked up more screen assists tonight, nine total compared to six for the Rockets. Rudy Gobert got five of those screen assists, and his total number leads the league.

Harpring had mentioned screen assists. Didn't know it was an official thing. Long over die. Rudy will be looking even better. Need to get him the ball more. He's got the little hook down pat now!

It was Lyles' third straight game in double-figures.

"I'm not doing anything different than I was at the beginning of the season," he said. "My shot is just starting to fall a little bit now. So I'm just staying aggressive and doing what I can do inside the team scheme."

Team? He needs to learn how to pass the ball.

And in the end, choosing Neto over Mack is a vote for Hood, Joe Johnson, Joe Ingles, and the rest of the Jazz's bench crew to get more offensive possessions than they currently get with Mack on the floor. That just seems like a good move.

Regardless of any of that it's a joke that he hasn't gotten a chance to play when the rest of team outside Rudy sucks. Give Bolomboy a chance too. I don't think he's ready but who knows? Maybe he would give them some energy like Booker and Johnson used to do.

Hill and forward Gordon Hayward have arguably been the team's two best players in this 7-8 start to the campaign, but the tandem has played together exactly one time, leaving Jazz coach Quin Snyder left to wonder how differently the start of this season might have been if both had been healthy.

Rudy :facepalm

"We've still got the weapons to win games," Gobert said. "We have to control what we can control and win games. We've still got a lot of good players. It's not an excuse to say we have injuries."

The main reason is injuries have finally caught up to them.

Excuses. The fact that Neto hasn't even played makes that a non excuse!

The front unit should be Hayward, Derrick Favors, Rudy Gobert, George Hill and Rodney Hood. That lineup gives the Jazz a lot of shooting ability, unique scoring opportunities and a mismatch on every possession. The second unit should be seven-time all-star Joe Johnson, Dante Exum (who has had plenty of starting experience), Boris Diaw, Trey Lyles and Trey Burks. Between those 10 players, there are arguably nine starters.

Considering how most of the team has played that is laughable!

A healthy Jazz team can compete against any team in the NBA for 48 minutes.

I think a team of Hill, Rudy and whoever will compete with anyone.

Nets Daily: ESPN says Donatas Motiejunas team calling teams with cap room seeking interest. That would have to be BKN, DEN, PHL, PNX, MIN and UTH,

The Nuggets were the ones coming off of a back-to-back, not the Jazz.
The game was played in Salt Lake City, not Denver.
The Nuggets had Danilo Gallinari available and playing Sunday, but not Wednesday.
The Jazz had George Hill available and playing Wednesday, but not Sunday.

Diaw finally showed something as well! And Rudy was on the floor

He played so much because Trey Lyles got in foul trouble with five fouls in his 14 minutes, but Snyder felt that his fouls were actually a good sign. "He's figuring stuff out. I didn't feel like they were fouls of omission, they were fouls of commission, he was trying to do something right," Snyder said. "As long as he's doing that, he's going to get better."

The D-league is for figuring stuff out

Gobert is the most impactful rim protector in the league; when teams draw him away from the hoop, Favors serves as the best secondary rim protector in the NBA.

Why did they suck so bad when Favors was the starting center than? :confusedshrug:

Hill should be the priority and than Gordon. Maybe you can trade Favors for some good pieces and sign Hood if he can continue to be more consistent as he has been?

It is unclear whether the Miami Heat have the assets to swing a deal for one of Minnesota’s three young studs, and it’s surprising that the Timberwolves are reportedly willing to move any of them so early in the season. In any case, whether the T’wolves decide to keep the trio intact or the Heat refuse to put together an adequate trade proposal, it remains unlikely that Towns, Wiggins or LaVine will be taking their talents to South Beach. – via Palm Beach Post

Jazz ought to consider trading for them if they are available. Keep Hill and Rudy and make everyone else available though I'd give everyone for Towns in a minute.
