For the non-Aussie crew, most struggled. Rubio was 1-10 from the floor with 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Jae Crowder was 1 of 4 from the field. Thabo Sefolosha only took two shots in 17 minutes and only made 1 of them. Derrick Favors played great defense on Ben Simmons to start the game then struggled against the much larger Embiid. He finished 1 of 3 from the field with 4 points and 7 rebounds.

Thabo was only 50%? :lol

Rudy. But keep giving everyone else the credit

After this upcoming road trip, the Jazz will play only 16 of their final 41 games on the road. That will include only one road trip that is longer than two games. Not only will the Jazz be playing in the friendly confines of Vivint Smart Home Arena, but they will finally be playing some of the lowly teams in the league.

But they are a good road team and a crappy home team

So thank goodness for the fun battle between Raul Neto and Trey Burke, one of our only on-court looks at the off-court playing time competition that the two players had leading throughout the the 2015-16 Jazz season. That is, until the Jazz acquired Shelvin Mack and it was pretty clear right away that Mack was better than both.

Was clear Neto was better than Burke the moment he stepped on the floor in Summer League yet the Jazz waited two years to bring him over. He's been better than Exum as well and took Mack's back-up spot from him his last year. Better than bad Ricky too. Please trade him somewhere he can be appreciated. Thabo and Niang too

For Exum, it was a continuation of a solid run of play, but one that Snyder is cautious about reading too much into. Or he is trying to at least not evaluate too much. Exum may be in his fifth season, but he has struggled with injuries throughout his career, making it difficult for him to truly progress.

If Utah finishes at 47-35, not only would they have a chance at the 4th seed in the playoffs, they will have executed the greatest playoff push of All-Time or at least in the modern era of basketball. They will have finished the season 28-7, winning an insane 80% of their remaining schedule. This is the type of finish that gets people Executive of the Year, Coach of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Defensive Player of the Year awards. This is special. This is historic. Enjoy it.

The Jazz have played 21 road games and just 16 home games so far, meaning they have only 20 road games left and 25 home games remaining.

a top road team and one of the worst at home

Getting out of that early hole will be a lot easier if Dante Exum continues to play like he did against stiff competition in December. This is a little bit of small sample size theater, but Exum is finally healthy and playing well. His December, capped with his 13 point, 13 assist performance in his first start of the year in the blowout win over the New York Knicks, has set him up to set new career highs almost across the board.

Looked like the same old Dante tonite. Teams will adjust. No reason to guard him. Make him miss or turn it over

Should Lindsey decide to sit tight at the deadline, however, that doesn’t end this section of things to look forward to in 2019. Utah’s aforementioned salary books are also positioned so that the team is looking at possible near-max cap space to play with in 2019’s free agency period, but there’s plenty of time for a closer look at that down the road.

Why even discuss it? Unless someone asks out nothing will be done. Only players I can see going are Thabo, Neto and Udoh because they won't be back and maybe Niang because he's not a Quin guy. Rubio and Favors will be back next year. Goss will replace Neto. Bradley replaces Udoh. One roster spot plus their first and 2 Gleague spots. One regular spot might go to one of the guys they have now. It's Utah. Not much will change and why should it? :rant \

Exum at the peak of his powers makes Utah special.
Simple as that.
I always thought Rudy and Exum held the keys to an unique defensive powerhouse.
I also heard how Exum trained with Baron Davis a few years back, and the pairing always intruiged.
BD has all the mojo and just the right mentality to stir up our young player.
Exums got that kind of ceiling.

Gobert may have a bit more of a chance, particularly since he actually has played at an All-Star level this season. As evidenced by his absence from the first return of votes, it would take a miracle for him to come anywhere close to being an All-Star starter, but he still has a pretty good shot of making it in as a reserve selected by the coaches.

Per Cleaning the Glass, Gobert and Favors each shoot around 71 percent at the rim4, a big part of why they rank in the 94th and 83rd percentile, respectively, for effective field goal percentage among big men. So any pass designed to create an opportunity for those two to score down low is worth a certain amount of risk, at least according to Lindsey. For example, that pass described in the opening paragraph is a mistake the Jazz can live with.

The Jazz won this game in spite of Blake Griffin going off for 34 points on an extremely efficient 61.9% from the field and 3/7 shots made from behind the arc. He got relatively close to a triple double, with 10 rebounds and 5 assists to tag onto his impressive night. Andre Drummond was his usual self, putting up an efficient 15 points on 70% shooting, and grabbed a whopping 18 rebounds on the night. Reggie Bullock, breaking new grounds with his new dreadlock unicorn horn hairstyle, must be onto something as he made five threes on the night with 62.5% 3pt%, ending the game with 19 points.

Portland, Sacramento, San Antonio and LAC all have relatively easy 2nd half schedules as well, the only other playoff contenders in the West who have a below .500 overall schedule remaining. Not as easy as the Jazz have, but certainly could be tough to pass them up unless the Jazz have a 2nd half like they did last year.

The Raptors now have the easiest remaining schedule, followed by the Jazz and Bucks, so Toronto and Milwaukee could both be up around 60 wins at the end of the year.

Trying to evaluate Ricky Rubio in a difficult year.

what makes this anymore difficult than any other? :confusedshrug:

“You’ll take that shot all day,” said Marc Zumoff, the play by play announcer for the Philadelphia 76ers after another of Ricky Rubio’s nine misses as the Jazzman went 1 for 10 for the night. “That’s the shot that you want to give up if you’re the 76ers.”

But I thought it was Quin generating all these great looks with his offensive genius?

“If he’s left wide open, he has to make them pay,” says Matt Harpring.

Therein lies the problem

While the eye test shows a player who is playing with heart and hustling his tail off on defense, there’s that another thing the eye test yields: defenses don’t give Ricky any attention. In what has become the second annual edition of “Is Ricky Rubio in a slump or is this who he is?” We’re still left with a big “I have no clue.”

Not we you. He sucks.

If you’re wondering if that is purely anecdotal that Ricky Rubio is left alone, it’s not. He is second in wide open looks from three and first in wide open looks from two for the team. He’s repeatedly left open. That doesn’t include the many times he foregoes the shot.

way to go COTY! :rant

[Sidenote: To be fair, defenses do this to Dante Exum as well. But Dante has a certain skill that few can replicate ... speed. He can set up and draw the defense onto him and, when they close out, get around them with his lightning quick step. Rubio, while crafty, just doesn’t have that speed. That ability has always been at Dante’s disposal, but he has only recently started to consistently realize how to use it.]

but neither can finish so the speed and craftiness are meaningless

When people do point to Ricky Rubio and why he should continue to start or be a part of Utah’s future, they’re quick to highlight his big heart and how last year he was the soul of the Utah Jazz’s comeback, which in many ways is completely true. When he’s not at Vivint, he usually can be found giving back to the community. He’s one of the best community service players Utah has ever had on their roster. He’s a great mentor for this Utah Jazz club as well. He brought a level of professionalism that Utah needed in the void that Gordon Hayward left.

They were closer to the lottery than to the playoffs despite the huge heart until Rudy came back. I'd rather win games than have great citizens sorry. It's a basketball team not the peace core :wtf:

Ricky Rubio’s tenure in Utah has always been an odd one from the start. One that has flourished despite its forced beginning which included a flight to court Gordon Hayward hours after being traded to Utah only to find out the star for whom he was traded to appease had bailed to Boston. From that moment on until January, the Rubio-Jazz partnership was an awkward one. Did it really fit? Then Rubio turned on the jets last January, Donovan took his game to yet another level, Gobert returned from injury and the rest was history.

it never made sense. Hill made perfect sense. Best team they've had since Deron and probably since Karl and John was at the end of Hayward's last season when they put 4 guys around Rudy that could play with or without the ball and space the floor and make plays. Why they went in another direction after Rudy put up over 17 a game during that time is baffling

This season has had an element of deja vu. Rubio’s struggles are more pronounced this year. He ranks as one of the worst starters (shooting percentages-wise) in the league. He has 2 more 25% or worse shooting games (15) than the next closest player who doesn’t happen to be known for his shooting prowess (Lonzo Ball).

Ball was a combo of Rubio and Exum in one package.

It’s now January. The Jazz’s schedule gets easier, but we’re left with a bunch of stats from Rubio that don’t really correlate to wins or losses. They’re just ... there. Which makes him so difficult to peg down. Will he improve his play on the court? Does it even matter for Utah’s future success? Is Utah’s ceiling more correlated with another X-Factor player like Jae Crowder, Dante Exum, or Joe Ingles? Will Rubio even be with Utah after this season or even February?

He'll be back for even more money. Live and die with Ricky. Gobert will leave at the end of his contract. Go Jazz!

their offense has the potential to be great

with a new coach and players sure

Now imagine taking this elite lineup, and replacing Crowder with a career 40% 3PT shooter, who still defends at a high level and moves the ball.

too bad he won't play Thabo though :rant

How would he fit on the Jazz? Well at first glance, he isn't a great fit.

He's a great fit everywhere :facepalm

He overlaps at the position with Donovan Mitchell. So basically, if the Jazz are getting Beal, they are committing to the Donovan at point guard idea.

That's what they need to do unless they can get a Hill type that can play with or without the ball

The third thing is young players. Utah may not have many of them, but Dante Exum, Grayson Allen, and Royce O'Neale may all hold some (not a lot, but some) value in other team's eyes.

Not much value there. Bradley too

If this is for Beal, it certainly isn't. They want more out of him. In that case, the Jazz need to add picks/young guys. Maybe Grayson Allen and this years first could do it.

not going to do it :facepalm

If Favors and Rubio doesn't do it for them, I think Favors and Exum does. The salary matches up more smoothly that way as well, and that gets Utah to just over $26 Mil. If Washington sees potential in Dante, they likely are demanding that he is part of the package.

no one is demanding Exum

While I'd love the Jazz to land someone like Klay Thompson or Kyrie Irving, that's probably not happening. Even the next tier of guys (Tobias, Middleton) is iffy, although the Jazz organization believes otherwise according to Andy Larsen. Below are some ideas I think could actually happen. My guesses on salaries could be totally off, and will certainly change after we have a whole season to evaluate.

Harris supposedly wants to be here but the way LA is playing why would they part?

Unless they sign a big free agent for 22m or less, it probably means the Jazz will lose both Rubio and Favors.

Rubio (13m) / Dante / Neto (MLE)

Mitchell / Royce / Allen

Ingles / Korver

Tobias Harris (22m) / Jae / Niang

Gobert / Udoh (MLE)

+ Rookies

It will probably take more than 22m to get Tobias. In all these scenarios, Neto and Udoh come back through MLE or vet min, or are replaced with cheap free agents or rookies.

Neto and Udoh aren't coming back. Rubio and Favors are.

If Middleton or Tobias are gettable for 25m and Dante is ready for a bigger role, Rubio could be dropped in favor of a solid backup. Cory Joseph could be swapped out for someone like Darren Collison or Delon Wright.

why would they want a solid lineup?

Except now Utah faces another big hurdle, as the injury bug has hit the team hard. In addition to the right ankle sprain Grayson Allen has been dealing with, Dante Exum and Thabo Sefolosha were hurt last Saturday against the Detroit Pistons, and Ricky Rubio went down early against the Bucks. Then on Tuesday, Tony Bradley underwent a surgery on his right knee.

Bradley got hurt in the last gleague game. Is it serious? :wtf:

The Jazz released an update Tuesday indicating that both Rubio and Sefolosha have mild right hamstring strains and will be reevaluated in a week, while Bradley will be reevaluated in a month. No official update on Exum was given, but The Athletic reported that he's expected to be out a couple of weeks with a left ankle sprain.

I guess minor surgery

Per NBA.com: the Jazz are 12-2 when DM shoots at least 44% from the field, and 8-0 when he shoots 44% and has at least 5 assists. (That article was posted yesterday and discusses that Jazz at the 41 game mark, so I believe it does not include last night: a game where DM shot well over 44% and had 7 assists, thus continuing the trend.)

That basically confirms what any eye-test of the Jazz would already tell you: DM has been streaky this year, and when he

Why he wasn't down there sooner is the question. It obviously helped him and he wasn't ready for the NBA. He has sucked offensively too and didn't really even fill up the box score with the Stars. Rudy Gobert’s emergence as the NBA’s best defender has been a franchise changer for the Utah Jazz. After the trade of then-star Deron Williams, the Jazz entered a period of kind of rebuilding and kind of not. They didn’t do well at either until drafting and developing Rudy Gobert. in effect i think this does work. at least well enough for the jazz to have an average offense even if RR is not a shooter.

Replace Gobert with Towns and the offense would maybe get to top 5. But the defense would be somewhere in the middle of the pack.

Minnesota’s defense was bottom 10 last year and is not even in the top half this year – Towns is a big reason why they can’t get it together on that end of the court.

Posted by Uber_snotling on Jan 15, 2019 | 1:27 PM

Not sure the offense gets better. Rudy is one of the most effective offensive players in the league

Rudy isn’t the only reason the Jazz are great on defense. They don’t have Thibodeau running a laughably outdated scheme and not teaching the players (up until just recently thank god). They don’t have Derrick Rose and Jeff Teague and Jamal Crawford and whatever other garbage perimeter defenders the Wolves have given Towns to work with. Turnstiles.

Fact is Towns was highly touted defensively when he came into the league, has every imaginable physical tool to play dominant defense, and now that he’s out from under a terrible tyrant of a head coach he’s putting it together. Scheme and fit and personnel can change everything for a player. He would kick ass under Quin.

I’ve actually convinced myself that it would be a net positive to trade Rudy for him. I would guess his career will last significantly longer, he’s extremely durable, never missed a game I don’t think. Not that any of this will happen, it’s just fun to think about, and again I LOVE RUDY GOBERT, he fits the Jazz like a glove, he’s actually my favorite player, I want him around as long as he wants to be around.

Posted by Alex Dye on Jan 15, 2019 | 2:12 PM

They aren't good defensively without Rudy. Even with him they are inconsistent. Rubio is a turnstile

I think he prefers playing pf

Our chances of winning a ring would then be on the shoulders of guys like Exum and Crowder. If we don’t believe either of them are ready to handle that or good enough to take them there then we have to go with multiple players. Maybe try to retain Favors and add a guy like Middleton.

I'd be surprised other than the expiring contracts that won't be back next year and that Quin doesn't like anyway

When the Utah Jazz traded for Kyle Korver back on November 28, it not only signaled a commitment to winning from the organization, but helped to address on of the most glaring weaknesses on the team: shooting. Since Korver joined the Jazz, his ability to shoot the ball has become infectious. The Jazz averaged 31.5 3-point attempts per game and 31.9 percent accuracy on those attempts before the trade. Since then, they are attempting nearly 34 threes per game, and connecting on a whopping 36.7 percent.

They are committed to being mediocre. Traded their 2nd best scoring option in the deal.

It seems as though Hardaway is in a lose-lose situation, because unless he is scoring 25 points a game and leading the Knicks to the playoffs, people are going to view his contract as a massive overpay. In reality, his contract has not been too bad based on his production. In his first two seasons back with the Knicks1, he has averaged 18.4 points per game, and this season, he is scoring 20 points per game, and adding 3.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists2.

sounds better than paing your back up center the same amount of money to me? :rant

The problem would be justifying the price tag for a potentially reduced role on the Jazz. Hardaway plays 33 minutes a game for the Knicks, but on the Jazz, he would likely be asked to come off the bench, and those minutes would drop to the mid-20s. But it could be worth it, and his final year as an Atlanta Hawk is evidence of why it could work.

Bring a 20 point scorer off the bench on a team desperate for a 2nd option?

What would it take? In order to make any trade, the Jazz will have to worry about matching the incoming players salary. Hardaway is currently slated to make $17.3 million. In order for the Jazz to match that type of money, you are likely going to have to part with either Derrick Favors or Ricky Rubio. If I were the GM, I would lean towards parting ways with Rubio. He has had a very up and down tenure in his time with the Jazz, and both Mitchell and Dante Exum are clearly capable of running the point. In return, you would get another offensive weapon who can carry the offensive load at times.

Favors makes a lot of sense next to Porzingas. Exum isn't clearly capable of running the point though. They might want Exum? They like young pg's that suck. Could do a Thabo, Neto, Udoh, Niang too

What would it take? There have already been reports of the Suns looking to move Warren at the deadline, and the Jazz would only need to match his $11 million/per year salary. Prior to the start of last season, The Suns signed Warren to a 4-year, $50 million extension, so he is in the first season of that deal. Based on his performance over the last two seasons, that is a fantastic contract for an up-and-coming player who is still just 25 years old. The would likely have to part ways with Thabo Sefolosha, and then potentially Grayson Allen to sweeten the pot.

He's only a couple years older than Allen too. Doubt they'd do that though. Suns need a pg. Exum, Rubio or Neto would have to be part of the deal.

I don't necessarily think he needs to move to the pg but he needs someone next to him that can play with and without the ball like Hill or Beverly or Neto. Exum and Rubio being left all alone in the corner won't do it.

Ronnie Brewer was the 14th overall pick for the Jazz in the 2006 draft. Over the next 4 seasons he would play over 7,000 minutes, averaging 10.5 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists. The reason he makes the list is because he was the starting shooting guard during the DWill, Memo, AK, Boozer days. The Utah Jazz were over the cap in 2010, so Brewer was moved at the deadline to save some cash. I feel like this may have been the start of the end for Deron Williams, seeing the Jazz make a money saving move. The first round draft pick they got in return was later used to trade for Al Jefferson.

Ouch! Not only did they screw up that team it helped them get the black hole known as Al. Those were the darkest years.

The only tricky thing when it comes to trading for Parker is his $20 million contract. It would likely take a player and package centered around Derrick Favors, who is making $16.9 million this season, along with another player to make a deal work.

I'd think they might want Exum looking at their roster. Neto would make sense as well or maybe even Rubio.

Get better? Have a big 3? Get rid of some players that don't fit and ones that Quin doesn't like anyway? Have to give up some young guys and picks? Can't see it hurting the team unless it's for Gobert or Mitchell.

Is Conley a bigger upgrade at PG than Porter or Harris is at PF, given those deals probably cost Favors plus Rubio plus a 2019 first.

You don't know what it would cost. Doesn't sound like either player is even available. Harris supposedly wants to play here which is the best thing he has going for him.
