Everyone knows that the Jazz are looking to upgrade from Ricky Rubio at point guard. Not that Rubio is a bad player, but for a team that is already offensively limited, a player like Rubio, whose PER this season is 14, Offensive Win Shares is 0.9, and who shoots 38% from the field, does not really help them.

And yes, Ostertag was an important component of those teams. Defensive Box Plus-Minus (DBPM) has its limitations (Basketball Reference explains them here), but over those two years Utah went to the Finals, he was 24th in the league in that metric. In the 1998 postseason, he had an NBA-leading 6.6 DBPM.

For his career, Ostertag averaged 11.4 rebounds, 9.6 points and 3.5 blocks per 75 team possessions.

Generally speaking, a 3/4 type who can force defenses to come out of the paint is what I think Utah should be aiming for.

Bradley showed it's time for Favors to go. Bradley at least deserves a shot to win the job against Udoh or another vet. Udoh had a great game too. Long almost had a double double too. He's deserved more of a shot as well. He's been better than Allen at the Gleague level. Might be enough to earn him a spot on a roster next year. Niang seems to have moved up in Snyder's eyes anyway


He's hopeful that he made a good enough impression over the past couple weeks to maybe be considered for playing time when the games really start to matter: Sunday when the Jazz and Rockets open up their series.


Unless there are injuries he better not play but I certainly wouldn't be surprised to see him playing instead of Neto or even Thabo

I'm not being overly negative about the Jazz, but they can't blame all these other teams for the matchup. It was in their power to win 1 or 2 or 5 more, & it didn't happen. Nobody wins them all, but hopefully they bring a little more urgency & win a few more close ones next year.

What can be learned?: Gobert’s absence is interesting to think about in the context of the playoffs, as he struggles to make a big defensive impact against perimeter-oriented offenses like Houston’s (such was the case in last year’s series between the two teams). The Jazz are definitely better overall with him on the floor, however.

What can be learned?: For as much as the Jazz will need to be great defensively in this series because it’s their calling card and because Houston’s offense is so dangerous, they’ll need to play very well offensively, too. That hasn’t always happened this season, as Utah doesn’t have anyone beyond Mitchell who can create his own shot consistently.

That unit has the same issues this year as it did last year. There are a too many times where the Jazz find themselves without enough shooting on the floor. For much of this season, Utah has been able to create create enough offense to win 50 games. In the playoffs those weaknesses become much more pronounced.

Because Quin Snyder has started Jae Crowder at the 4-position the last two games it has opened things up for the Jazz offense and given more opportunities for Donovan Mitchell to drive to the rim. In game 4 Crowder was the hottest player to start the game hitting multiple threes and driving to the rim. It provided the offense necessary, outside of Donovan Mitchell, for the Jazz to take an early lead.


the question is why Favors started in the first place?


This offseason the Jazz have a lot of potential cap space and are surely willing to trade players to create more if a potential stud in free agency wants to come here. There are only so many years to take advantage of the Mitchell and Gobert primes and the Jazz have to surround Mitchell and Gobert with shooters.

A lesser team would have rolled over and quit but not the Jazz. I think Lindsey has his blueprint on how to build the team in the future. Whatever roster can beat Houston. This raises the question of whether anything good happened to the Jazz since last year, and whether the 2018-19 season ended up a success. Financially, no doubt about it. The Jazz have pitched themselves as a must-see event, selling out all 43 home and playoff games.

Over the last year, the roster stayed practically static. That seemed a wise move when they charged through the second half of the season. But there were no bottom-feeders in the postseason, not a Phoenix or Cleveland in the bunch. Utah might have benefitted from playing someone other than Houston in the first round, but if your goal is to avoid people, you have problems.

they certainly aren't built to win big. You need to build around your best player. Over 4 years now and we only had a brief glimpse of it and that was just because Favors was hurt and Hayward was going to be a free agent


And yet: After the shock-and-awe of Games 1 and 2 -- some of it self-inflicted with a radical strategic shift -- Utah's defense was sound. That includes Gobert. He has fared better against Golden State than you'd expect given his foot speed and the five-out, go-go stylistic card the Warriors can play.


The D was good enough to beat them last year as well. Ricky and Favors starting and Exum behind Ricky at over 40 million tells the story


Utah is a really good team that needs a little more top-end scoring and playmaking talent to crack the NBA's most rarefied territory. The Jazz knew that before this series. More talent allows for more schematic versatility. Beyond that obvious thing, I'm not sure Utah should worry that its best players or fundamental belief systems are somehow at odds with playoff success.
