This article makes you think that this is a new thing! They were tanking when he emerged in 2014. He made them competitive much to the chagrin of the front office. 6th best record after the Kanter trade. Depite that finish they went into the next season adding Neto and Pleiss instead of the vet pg that was obviously needed. Trying to tank despite the finish and Rudy? Finally added 3rd stringer Mack. Only Rudy's injury kept them out of the playoffs despite the best efforts of the front office to finish much lower

Finally decided to compete the next year with Hayward possibly leaving if they didn't. Rudy should have been an all-star over Hayward and others(probably the year before too but they didn't win enough and he may have been hurt. forget when his injury was). All NBA. Last year DPOTY. Remember how good George Hill was during his lone season with the Jazz? If Utah could get that, and possibly even a little more, out of the point guard spot for the next two and a half seasons, it’d have to at least consider it.


I think he's better than Hill though maybe not as great of a fit. Hill was a combo guard. Conley should be able to play with or without the ball though too. What I like is that Memphis played a similar style of grind it out ball. He should fit like a glove. Gives them another scorer that they don't have. One of the best two way pg's in the league. Tim Hardaway: Yours truly advocated for this one a couple months back. I’m not quite off the idea yet, but I’m closing in on accepting my L. I do still think there’s a world in which you get the 2016-17 version of Hardaway, start him at the 2 next to point guard Donovan Mitchell and you have something. It’s just the hyperdrive would need to be repaired before we could travel to that world.

Rather have Green coming to Utah with Conley not Casspi. They also have Temple who Snyder likes. Need a 4th team to take on Parsons contract. Neto need to go where he's appreciated. Goss replaces him. Niang probably need to go too if he's not going to play. Bradley needs a shot. Rather that is battling Udoh or another vet.

right now contender really just means being able to push the Warriors to at least 5 or 6 games. We are not under any pressure to take on a big contract. We could spend big, but I think Lindsey would want to get guys who are nearing their prime, not past it. (Love.)

So I don’t think there is anything wrong with taking on a guy who needs development. The roster has to be filled with reasonable size contracts, and I think Lindsey would prefer to take younger guys who have potential. Getting someone like Korver can obviously work well, but we don’t want the whole team to be near retirement soon either. We want to be contending in another year or two.

Contender means having a chance if the cards fall your way. GS isn't invincible as we saw last year. Still not convinced Cousins makes them better. Klay and Green haven't been as good. They are overdue for a big injury in the heart of the playoffs. They've been lucky so far. Why wait another year or two? Hayward might still be here if they had built on what they did in 2015 but they continued to try to lose games despite the great finish the year before. The fact that they didn't start trying to build around Gobert then is a joke! Let's wait another year or two :rant

Frankly, that’s why Rubio is so important to the Jazz1. Mitchell is a dynamic scorer and can create his own shot seemingly out of nowhere. But he can’t be the only player with the ability to puncture the defense. The Jazz’s offense is currently less efficient when any of Mitchell, Rubio or Exum uses the possession directly off of the drive — the three combine for 17.6 points on the combined 20.2 possessions that those three finish with a driving shot, free throw trip or TO. The value of those drives, at least for now, is in the advantage they create for the team, and the Jazz need Mitchell to be a scorer and not just a table-setter.

If that is the case, and this was essentially an unwinnable game for Utah, what can we take away from this? Utah Jazz: Favors and Rubio are great, but they keep the Jazz from greatness


They aren't great and you need to add Exum. Favors would be great as just Rudy's backup like last night but he makes too much money and deserves a bigger role elsewhere. Not sure there are that many places for him really though. Not an elite rim protector like Rudy. Exum too would be ok in a different role but he makes too much money. He is young and improving but without a shot it's hard to have him on the floor. Should be playing abroad or in the Gleague until he's ready for the NBA. Now he's just a defensive specialist. Ricky is a backup at best. Probably be best if he went back to Spain really though


To Jazz fans that think these things are signs of an impending doom, I would say to pump the breaks. This Jazz team is good, and they’ll stay that way as long as Rudy Gobert, Donovan Mitchell and Coach Quin Snyder lead the charge. Particularly on defense, their 114 D-rating over the last seven games notwithstanding.


Quin and the Wizard would be next on the list to go as far as I'm concerned!


Adding Kyle Korver earlier this season was a step in the right direction, but multiple other steps need to be taken, and the sooner the better. Lindsey and his brain trust still have work to do, and the February 7 trade deadline is the time to make the next move.

Favors may be better than, say, Nikola Mirotic or (insert other power forward here), but the problem is that Favors really isn’t a power forward in today’s NBA. He’s a stone-cold five-man and he’s definitely not better than Gobert, even as he puts up a 17-11-2 line per 36 minutes and shoots 58 percent from the field.


I think he can play PF on the right team. He needs to be next to someone that can protect the rim and space the floor rather it's a center or PF. The problem is there just aren't too many of those guys around.


Not just for the Jazz, but for Favors. He’s sacrificing a lot individually for the team to be good, not great. The former No. 3 overall pick needs to get to a spot where he can be himself, help lead a team and get paid in the process. And the Jazz need a player that actually fits the offense, even if he’s not as good as Favors overall.

Add a third in Favors and you have a starting five that puts up just 102 points per 100 possessions. Rubio never made sense. Favors/Kanter never made sense over Millsap at 8 million a year not to mention Demarre at 2,3 or 4 million or whatever it was at the time. But this being the Jazz Favors and Rubio will probably be back next year


If the two were a little bit older or less established, they would be ideal back-ups. But they both still have a lot to offer as front-line players in the league and key cogs, and their best results will never come with the current iteration of the Jazz.


Rubio is problematic even as a backup in today's game. Might be a fit for him but a return to Spain is probably best for all parties concerned. And even Favors as good as he is I think the places he fits as a starter are limited. There might be a place where he can play more than 20 minutes a night and play a bigger role though

If you ask me, he’s exactly the kind of player the Jazz could use behind Gobert. Specifically, a long (seven feet tall, 7-foot-4 wingspan), athletic defender, with inside and outside ability on the other end of the floor who has worked incredibly hard for a long time to get where he is.

The move the Jazz made that was more of a preventative medicine was a trade for Ricky Rubio who, a completely trustworthy and honest, Gordon Hayward indicated he would like to play with after the exit of George Hill. What we thought was a flu shot turned out to be placebo as Hayward left despite the Jazz giving up a first round pick for Rubio.

If Utah could do things over, they probably would have found a way to draft Kyle Kuzma instead of Tony Bradley back in 2017. There does need to be an upgrade in talent, for sure. I will be watching Exum to see if he can keep up his fine play leading up to his set-back. I also want to see if O'Neale can step up his offensive game consistently.

They need to make long-term decisions about Rubio, Favors. Bench will need to be considered (Udoh, Sefolosha; Neto, Niang are non-guaranteed; Korver partially guaranteed). There are definite flaws on this squad that need to be addressed.

Favors, Neto, Korver and Niang options picked up. Ricky signed to an expensive multi year deal. Thabo and Udoh gone. Bradley moves from the Stars to 3rd string. 1st round pick. Maybe Goss. :rant
