Appearing on The Scoop podcast with Darren Wolfson of SKOR North and 5 Eyewitness News, Glen Taylor said new Wolves president of basketball operations Tim Connelly had his eye on multiple impact trade targets, but Gobert was his “number one option.” The input of head coach Chris Finch, who expressed confidence in his ability to use Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns, was also a key factor in Minnesota’s decision to pull the trigger on the blockbuster deal (https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2022/08/wolves-glen-taylor-talks-gobert-mcdaniels-russell-towns.html). “What I did when Tim and Chris talked to me about this trade is to ask (Finch) is there a system that he knows how to utilize these players,” Taylor said. “And he was very confident that he did understand how to utilize their skill sets, being two big guys. We talked about a lot, so he convinced me that this is something that is going to take us to a winning situation, and gave us the go-ahead to make the trade.”

\
Asked if he’d like to see D’Angelo Russell sign an extension before the season begins, Taylor said it might benefit both sides to hold off and see how the 2022/23 season goes. (https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2022/08/wolves-glen-taylor-talks-gobert-mcdaniels-russell-towns.html) “(Finch) believes that with the new lineup, and with Russell in that lineup, that he’ll have a much better year just because of the way we’re going to play,” Taylor said. “He says he thinks there’s a big upside for Russell with this group of (players). That’s to his advantage and to our advantage if it works out.”
– via Hoops Rumors (https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2022/08/wolves-glen-taylor-talks-gobert-mcdaniels-russell-towns.html)
The plan remains for Taylor to hand over control of the franchise to incoming owners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez in a little over a year. (https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2022/08/wolves-glen-taylor-talks-gobert-mcdaniels-russell-towns.html) The Wolves’ longtime owner said he’s not having any regrets about giving up control of the team as it becomes a more legitimate contender. “No, I don’t have any second thoughts. I think it’s the right thing to do,” Taylor said. “We’ve left some options open that I’ll continue to be involved if I want to be involved, and that suits me just fine.”

Bogdanovic averaged 18.1 points and 4.3 rebounds in 2021-22 while shooting 38.7 percent from three. His defense was problematic enough, however, that the Utah Jazz were still 2.8 points per 100 possessions (https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/bogdabo02.html#pbp) worse with Bogdanovic on the floor last season and an obscene 18.6 points per 100 possessions worse with him in the game during the playoffs.
not enough time with Gobert and Conley obviously

Play-In Tournament Teams
7. Minnesota Timberwolves
This would be a massive disappointment for the Timberwolves after going all-in to acquire Rudy Gobert from the Jazz, especially after finishing with the seventh seed in the West last season.
But again, the Western Conference Playoff chase will be cutthroat.
The @utahjazz (https://twitter.com/utahjazz?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) have officially traded Rudy Gobert to the @Timberwolves (https://twitter.com/Timberwolves?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw).

Anthony Edwards should be a year better, Karl Anthony-Towns is a magnificent offensive player, while Gobert offers the best rim protection in the league.
However, head coach Chris Finch will have to prove he can make the pieces fit over an 82-game schedule with some questionable depth on the roster.
they are easily better than any Gobert led Jazz team who have been a top 6 team. I have them top 4 right now with GS, Suns and Clippers
questionable depth? Gobert/Towns/Edwards/Russell/Reid/Anderson/Prince/McDaniels/Forbes/Nowell/Rivers/Paschall/Layman looks pretty good to me. Who else has got a big 4? Who is deeper than that? We hear every year how incredibly deep the Jazz are and they haven't been close to this roster with Gobert. They were a top 10 D last year without Gobert. They did lose a couple good defenders in the trade but it sounds like Russell was one of the guys who really bought in last year at that end.
It’s difficult to look at a roster that still features Donovan Mitchell, Bojan Bogdanovic, Mike Conley, Jordan Clarkson, Patrick Beverley, Malik Beasley, and Jarred Vanderbilt and expect it to finish with one of the three worst records in the West next season.
Where would you expect that roster to finish? It's not good!

https://thejnotes.com/2022/08/11/espn-vs-vegas-utah-jazz-win-totals-for-2023/
Draft Kings sportsbook places the Utah Jazz at 32.5 wins next season. Are Rudy Gobert and Royce O’Neale really worth 17 games? Those odds could change without any notice, so as soon as the Jazz make a move–if they ever do–the odds could shift depending on what the Vegas people think.
if Danny has his way it will be closer 40 games Gobert is worth. He was the franchise. They now suck.
The much more interesting calculation is the one made by the fine folks at ESPN (https://www.espn.com/). They seem to think the Utah Jazz will only win 26 games next year (https://thejnotes.com/2022/08/10/espn-win-projection-utah-jazz/). That’s where the sportsbooks have the Oklahoma City Thunder. Even without Mitchell, I think the Jazz will be better than that.
Danny doesn't
The ESPN guestimate is very intriguing for me because ESPN is a news outlet. They have no money to make or gain based on how many people wager on the over or under from their number, so it stands to reason that 26 wins is a very unbiased number. That being said, if you can find a sportsbook that has the odds set in the twenties, I would jump right on that. As the Jazz currently sit, I think they could win 40 games.
When have they ever been a .500 team without Gobert in the lineup? :facepalm

https://thejnotes.com/2022/08/11/could-the-utah-jazz-land-superstar-kevin-durant/
Durant isn't going to agree to it and Ainge wouldn't do it
Unless the Jazz don’t have to rebuild? They could trade away all of their new assets and land the league’s biggest superstar. Pairing Durant with Donovan Mitchell would immediately make the Jazz title favorites for the first time ever, but would it be worth it?
title favorites? :lol
The Jazz would get Myles Turner (https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/t/turnemy01.html), one of the most promising young bigs in the league. They would also get Kevin Durant, who is perhaps the best player in the league and a top-15 player of all time. As payment, the Jazz would send Mike Conley, Jared Butler, Bojan Bogdanovic, Malik Beasley, and their entire cache of Minnesota picks, as well as the Royce O’Neale pick and either their 2027 or 2028 first-round pick.
He'd actually be a good fit with Vanderbilt to rebound and play inside on offense while Turner blocks shots and shoots 3's. Clarkson starts at the 2?
Utah Jazz: There’s a new big three in Salt Lake City
there is? When was the old big 3?
The Nets would also jump all over this trade. The franchise lost three first-rounders (https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/celtics/nba-rumors-nets-asking-price-kevin-durant-trade-revealed-and-its-huge) and swapped four picks with Houston to get James Harden, who isn’t even on the team anymore. The Rockets own the Nets’ future, so this pick would allow them to steal it back, and they wouldn’t have to worry about Durant sitting out next season if they don’t trade him.
Nets want more
Bogdanovic and Beasley allow the Nets to remain competitive. If Ben Simmons and Kyrie Irving stay in town next year, Bogdanovic and Beasley help round out the supporting cast of Joe Harris, Seth Curry, and Nic Claxton. They won’t be leading the East, but could still make some noise in the playoffs while having enough picks to slowly restock their roster.
they want to remain competitive?
Point Guard – Patrick Beverly Shooting Guard – Donovan Mitchell Small Forward – Kevin Durant Power Forward – Rudy Gay Center – Myles Turner
tiny backcourt and Clarkson and Gay remain. Vanderbilt would start. Someone has to rebound all the misses at both ends. Try again...
The Jazz would have Jordan Clarkson, Jarred Vanderbilt, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Udoka Azubuike, and Leandro Bolmaro to round off the bench. If Azubuike and Vanderbilt can take a step forward (https://thejnotes.com/2022/07/26/utah-jazz-3-players-break-next-season/) next year, this would actually be one of the better benches in basketball.
why mention Bolmaro who has done nothing yet?
Even after Durant, Gay, and Beverly decline, the Jazz would still have a solid roster. Turner, Mitchell, and Clarkson would all still be solid players, and if the young bench guys develop, the Jazz actually could compete in the post-Durant years. The trade is very much directed at making the Jazz competitive now, but the team would get to keep some of their most promising young players, avoiding a total rehaul when Durant hangs it all up.
Turner, Mitchell and Clarkson is a horrible team sorry
There are still some question marks surrounding this deal. First, would Durant even agree to play in Utah? He has made it clear he wants to go to Miami or Phoenix and chase a ring with minimal effort. In Utah, he would be the clear number one option, and Turner isn’t an All-Star, so Durant wouldn’t get the treatment he is used to.
Where is Durant not the clear number 1 option? He's arguably the greatest scorer ever

8. Al Jefferson
the inefficient black hole who played center for Utah ahead of Millsap
7. Bryon Russell
Millsap was the best player on the Jazz after they traded Williams until they let him go to tank. Russell was a nice 3 and D guy on their best teams. Get a clue!
4. Thurl Bailey
too high. Great 6th man
3. Carlos Boozer
sadly Millsap was better. But that is the Jazz. Bobby Hansen over Griffith and Del Curry and so on
hard to argue with the top 2. How does AK not make the list though?

now they want Barrett?
All the talk I've seen was they don't want Barrett because you have to immediately pay him. In fact the rumours were that no one really wants Barrett, because you'd likely have to pay him the max and he's not really worth it. If he's your best or 2nd best player then you're probably not getting far (as the Knicks showed).
If anything the Knicks want to unload him more than anyone really wants him.

Hasn't sounded like the Jazz want him or that the Knicks want to get rid of him but it doesn't sound like the Knicks want to trade anyone but Randle and maybe Fournier and Ainge only cares about the picks. Imagine a team with Mitchell and Barrett on max deals. Is it even a play in team in a now stronger east?

For me, the player that stands out as the most valuable in that group is Bojan Bogdanovic. Last season, Bogdanovic put up solid averages of 18.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game on 45.5/38.7/85.8 percent shooting splits. On the offensive end, Boganovic had one of his most impactful seasons to date: according to Bball Index, Bogdanovic posted a career second-best 3.60 LEBRON WAR and career-high 1.68 O-LEBRON. Off his stellar shooting alone, Bogdanovic can create amazing gravity on the perimeter, spacing out defenses and allowing ball-handlers on his team to drive into the paint with less congestion.
why even show his rebound and assist numbers? They are awful especially since some call him their PF!

Reckon there would be more than a few contenders looking at Bojan, so no need to take back bad deals in the process. Same with Pat Beverly who I reckon gets moved before the season starts too. Conley might be the only one you gotta be a bit less strict with since he's got 2 years at decent money left on his deal.

Toronto is the only team I've saw rumored to actually have interest in Bojan. Conley only has a partial guarantee for year 2. I would think Conley or Beverley will be gone so Butler can play though. I think they can get rid of everyone but it might have to wait for the trade deadline. Running out of time and teams are filling their rosters.

This is a solid addition for the Knicks. Having a young superstar in New York like Donovan Mitchell would make the KNicks fun again. But they won’t just be fun, adding 10 wins means they’re a consistent playoff team for years, and if there’s one things the Knicks need, it’s some consistency.

https://thejnotes.com/2022/08/18/ranking-the-top-10-guards-in-utah-jazz-history/
Despite never tasting NBA Championship success, the Utah Jazz have been one of the most consistent franchises in the NBA over the past 40 years, and over that time, they’ve hosted some legendary names. Names like Adrian Dantley, Carlos Boozer, Rudy Gobert and the iconic Karl Malone have all donned the famous Jazz Note, but today, we are going to take a special look at the guards that made this franchise what it is today.
1 name out of place there :facepalm
9. Jordan Clarkson
my least favorite Jazzman ever and that's saying something. Hard to watch him play even on the rare occasion he is hitting his prayers
8. Jeff Malone
another of my least favorites. Acquired to extend the D so Malone could work inside. The problem was his game was 10-15 feet! Would have been happy if they'd cut him and they got Horny for him!
After moving to Utah from New Orleans, the Jazz franchise continued to struggle, but it was due to players like Rickey Green that they were able to move out of that phase, as he was integral to the teams first ever playoff berth, as he played hards on both ends of the floor and was an electric player for this franchise night in, night out. Green put together some great seasons in Utah, but his best was in 1984, when he tallied 13 points, 9 assists and 3 steals per game, en route to his first and only All-Star appearance, but ultimately, a young guy named John Stockton would come in and after a year or two of pressuring Green, would ultimately take the starting point guard spot from him.
Ricky was one of the best pgs in the league for a few years but should have been traded as soon as they got Stockton. He was that good! Instead they lost him in the expansion draft for nothing
At the peak of his career, Griffith was averaging 22 points per game, but as he went on, the Jazz found players like Stockton and Malone, and began phasing him out as a top option, and after all the years of high-flying, his body was really starting to pay the price. Ultimately, he’ll be remembered fondly by Jazz fans from that era, but for most, he’ll be overshadowed by the emergence of the players that ended up taking Utah to the next level, but he should be remembered for what he did for Utah in the early 80’s.
He was phased out because he held out for more money. Playing behind the stiff Hansen. He actually got better as he aged as his D and ball handling improved
5. Jeff Hornacek
I'd have him 4th without a doubt
2. Donovan Mitchell
ahead of a HOFer? :lol
Mitchell has faced plenty of criticism for his lack of defensive intensity over the past season or so, but as an offensive threat, there are few better shooting guards in today’s NBA, with an ability to score the basketball at will in many different ways. He may not have the accolades of a Deron Williams or Pete Maravich, but as an individual player, Donovan has solidified himself as one of the best players in the league today, and with Rudy Gobert now gone, he can lead this team as his own now, and it’s only a matter of time until the awards and recognition follow.
he may never even be an all star again
no Gail Goodrich? :facepalm

https://sports.yahoo.com/knicks-reportedly-offer-five-first-181815271.html
The Jazz are not going to get “significantly” more than that. The Jazz reportedly initially asked for seven first-round picks (https://nba.nbcsports.com/2022/08/21/knicks-jazz-reportedly-still-talking-mitchell-trade-despite-utahs-sky-high-ask/), and the Knicks recoiled.
we'll see. It's not necessarily how many picks but whose picks and the protections on them. 4 unprotected Knicks 1sts might get it done?
One sticking point has been Quentin Grimes (https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/basketball/nba/player/51469/quentin-grimes) — the Jazz want the young shooting guard, the Knicks and coach Tom Thibodeau want to keep him (https://nba.nbcsports.com/2022/08/21/knicks-jazz-reportedly-still-talking-mitchell-trade-despite-utahs-sky-high-ask/). Maybe that is significant enough to get the deal done.
I doubt Danny cares that much about Grimes. All about the picks
However, Leon Rose (https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/basketball/nba/player/58189/leon-rose) and the Knicks will not start bidding against themselves. Rose has been patient and smarter than that as an executive. The Knicks are not going to make a move like the Timberwolves that surprised front offices around the league because they surrendered so much (Minnesota may be locked into the key parts of this roster, but the All-Star leap Anthony Edwards (https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/basketball/nba/player/58299/anthony-edwards) seems poised to make gives them room to improve). Miami can offer three first-round picks and Tyler Herro (https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/basketball/nba/player/51044/tyler-herro) — that is not better than the Knicks package now on the table. So why should Rose and the Knicks up that offer?

The Knicks can let the Jazz come to them, and if Ainge wants to bring Mitchell to training camp — and into the season, where he would win games for a Utah team looking to be near the top of the lottery — then go ahead. Very rarely do 25-year-old three-time All-Stars hit the trade market, especially when they haven’t publically demanded to be moved. Even more rarely do star players hit the market with three years left on their current contract and no off the court issues to speak of.
forced his way onto the court against doctors wishes and him not being 100% probably cost them at least one series maybe more. Got that doctor fired from the team. Have fun New York!
But, with training camp rapidly approaching, and pathways to make a second blockbuster trade narrowing, the Jazz are running out of Mitchell trade options. With teams already pulling their offers, will the Jazz regret setting such a high asking price for Mitchell?
Ainge knows what he's doing. He got 3 unprotected for Gobert from a team where they likely won't be high picks. I'd say 3 unprotected might get it done with enough other assets to let Danny finally start having some fun again. The Knicks unprotected are the ones to get. I don't see the Knicks being anything special with this trade!

https://saltcityhoops.com/qa-jazz-weigh-alternate-futures-as-offseason-enters-crunch-time/
Once Gobert was traded, they’ve similarly looked for deals that bring in a player to play at Mitchell’s side, all while keeping an eye on the rebuilding route. The Jazz weren’t going to land Kevin Durant or Kyrie Irving, and whatever attempts they did make didn’t bear fruit, so they’re left with a choice: trade Mitchell now or carry him into the season as the team’s only star.
the problem I see is he won't be a star when they suck
We know that Ainge, as CEO of Basketball Operations and Alternate Governor, wanted to be more removed from the day-to-day operations, and I think that applies to trade negotiations until they reach a very serious level. I’m sure any deal involving Mitchell – and honestly probably any deal – starts with Ainge’s and Ryan Smith’s parameters and ends with their stamp of approval, but Zanik is the one in the trenches.
Ainge doesn't want to have to talk to the media. That's why he has the job title he has. He's running this show obviously!
As for players, I think the club would like two young players, and my assumption is that Quentin Grimes and Obi Toppin are the top two priorities because of their development trajectory and multiple years of contract control. While those two players might be part of Utah’s minimum trade package, I do think they’d consider only one of the players, at least as long as there was sufficient draft compensation.
don't think he cares that much. Wants picks especially unprotected. Doesn't sound like the Knicks have wanted to give up much and Danny wants as much as he can get
Options included Johnson, Wenyen Gabriel (if the Lakers guaranteed at least $60,000 of salary prior to the trade), Austin Reaves (ditto), or rookie Max Christie. That doesn’t mean the Jazz didn’t want Johnson – he does help fill a need, after all – but a small amount of additional salary was required for the deal to go through.
young vet when they dump all the old guys. Might have some value at the trade deadline
To acquire Mitchell, the Cavaliers would need to send out $24.2 million in salary, plus enough draft picks to make the Jazz happy. Some early speculation assumed a package would revolve around Collin Sexton (via sign-and-trade) and Isaac Okoro, but on Thursday one source claimed the Jazz lacked interest in those players. If that’s the case, the Cavs have several other options that could work, possibly including forward Cedi Osman, in whom the Jazz supposedly have interest.
Osman over the young guys?
If the mystery team isn’t Cleveland, I’d lean toward New Orleans, Orlando or Toronto, with Phoenix as a dark horse.
give me Orlando. Been bad for a long time. Most likely to get raped by Ainge
The lack of reported interest in Clarkson surprises me. I’m well aware of the 2021 Sixth Man of the Year’s warts, but they come with a boatload of bench scoring. Clarkson looked like the team’s best player for much of the playoffs, yet no significant market has developed.
I can't imagine anyone wanting him but I seem to be alone in that assessment?
These questions are similar and fairly simple to answer. If Mitchell stays, the Jazz will likely add a veteran free agent center, and personally I’d look to add one even if Mitchell is traded.
agree
When results for the final round (https://twitter.com/k_clayt/status/1563231834615320578) were tallied, Whiteside narrowly edged out Harrell in the unofficial fans’ choice poll. That’s funny, because I don’t think he’s the right kind of presence around a young, rebuilding team, and he didn’t seem eager to return when the season ended in April.

THT and Johnson haven’t been great. But they’re 21 and 26 years old, respectively, and both have wingspans of seven feet or more. Both have problematic shooting numbers and compound the Jazz’s excess of guards. There’s a chance neither guy plays a big role for the Jazz, but the idea here is that they’re trying the type of thing rebuilding teams should try.
Speaking of wingspans what is advior Lindsey up to these days? Johnson isn't a guard
Sometimes the big dominos fall first. But that doesn’t have to be the case.
If Mitchell is on the team you want to give him a chance to compete until the trade deadline anyway
No, I don’t know who the mystery team (https://twitter.com/NBA_NewYork/status/1561873652357939202?s=20&t=gakJpibk8we7ejyCI0zGTQ) is, but I am not at all shocked that other teams are poking around — especially with KD off the market. Mitchell is a top-20 player, the market for such a dude is definitely not going to be limited to any one team.
if he's really top 20 he'll carry the Jazz or Knicks. Hard for me to see though

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, the full deal is for 3 unprotected first round picks, two first round pick swaps, along with Collin Sexton (sign and trade), Ochai Agbaji and Lauri Markannen, giving the Jazz an incredible haul of picks in just one off-season. All 3 of these players in return will likely feature in the starting lineup in 2022, and if Danny Ainge is looking to rebuild the long way, a few of them could even be moved out for more picks at the deadline, but either way, this is a solid return for Mitchell.
a bit early to say. See what other moves they make but I'd put Agbaji on the Stars until he proves he's better than Beasley, Alexander-Walker and Bolmaro
It’s tough to say whether the team will now look to move their veterans like Mike Conley, Bojan Bogdanovic and Jordan Clarkson, but at this point, Utah and their fans finally have some confirmation on what the lineup could potentially look like in 2022. It’s not quite the 7 first-round pick haul that Danny Ainge was originally waiting for, and some may see it as a win for the Cavs, but ultimately, both teams got what they wanted.
obviously they will look to move them. Hopefully they can. The young guys need to play and lose a lot!
The Jazz now turn their attention to the 2023 draft and beyond, as Danny Ainge looks to rebuild this team around Sexton, Agbaji, Markannen and Talen Horton-Tucker, but with possession of so many future first-round picks, the team has plenty of flexibility going forward.

So Ainge had a few options.
Choose one of Gobert or Mitchell and retool the roster around them.
Trade both and play the lottery odds.
He chose Door No. 2.
new coach. bigger backcourt, a modern starting 4. Had many options
2023: Jazz, Timberwolves, worst pick of Rockets/Nets/Sixers
2024: None*
2025: Jazz, Wolves, Cavs
2026: Pick swap with Cavs and Wolves (essentially Utah will get the best pick of the three teams)
2027: Jazz, Wolves, Cavs
2028: Pick swap with Cavs
2029: Jazz, Cavs, Wolves (top 5 protected)
at least 3 in next year's deep draft! The Favors pick turn into 2 2nds after 2024?
The Jazz probably aren't done collecting, either. Bojan Bogdanovic, Jordan Clarkson and Mike Conley will also likely be moved to further usher in the rebuild.
Gay!
Betting that Minnesota and Cleveland will be bad isn't the worst idea, considering both have historically struggled to field a consistent winner. Yet, it's not a sure thing any of those picks will even end up being lottery selections.
doesn't look likely that either will be bad in the near future each with one of the best young players in the league but you never know with unprotected picks. Knicks would have been better
The Wolves and Cavs have young exciting cores that may keep them in contention all the way through 2029. Cleveland is stacked with three All-Stars (Darius Garland, Jarrett Allen and now Mitchell) and a potential All-NBA center in Evan Mobley. Minnesota, meanwhile, added Rudy Gobert to a team that already had Karl-Anthony Towns and emerging star Anthony Edwards.
and Russell. The only two big 4's in the league
Still, it's the NBA and things can change quickly. Who would have thought the Jazz would be blowing their team up with a soon-to-be 26-year-old Mitchell locked up for three more years? Maybe things don't work out as planned in Minnesota with the front-court duo of Towns, and Mitchell might leave Cleveland after his contract expires.
Garland or Mitchell will have to go eventually. Maybe it can work because of their two bigs. Gobert never had that
Kessler was one of the best rim protectors the college game has ever seen. He's also got a goofy personality (by his own admission) that should help endear him to Jazz fans.
or Stars fans anyway
If the Jazz can land Victor Wembanyama or Scoot Hendersen (the top two prospects for the 2023 draft) and they are as good as billed, then there's a light at the end of the tunnel — almost immediately. Regardless, though, fans are likely looking at multiple seasons of watching a lottery-bound team.

NBA guru Adrian Wojnarowski dropped a truth bomb on a recent episode of his podcast. According to Woj, the Knicks were left hanging as the Jazz accepted Cleveland’s offer for Mitchell (h/t Doric Sam of Bleacher Report): “I do think New York expected they would circle back, and they never got another chance with Utah,” Woj said. “Utah did not go back to them on Thursday and say, ‘Hey, we’ve got this offer from Cleveland. Do you want to top it?’ In their mind, when New York walked on Monday, that was it. They had a deal with Cleveland that they just did, agreed to it. And New York found out after that Mitchell deal was already agreed to, that he was on his way to Cleveland, and Utah was not circling back with New York to give them a chance to top the deal.” (https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-woj-drops-truth-bomb-on-new-yorks-botched-donovan-mitchell-trade-pursuit/)

https://thejnotes.com/2022/09/02/three-reasons-utah-jazz-won-donovan-mitchell-trade/
Suffice it to say, Utah are the clear winner of this trade. The Cavs get their third All-Star, which makes them a major force, but the Jazz are set for the future. With more draft capital than they know what to do with and steps in place to acquire even more young talent, it’s safe to say that the Utah Jazz have won the trade and will be a fun team to watch with a clear path moving forward.
hard to imagine the Jazz not winning big on this one. Sexton alone has a chance to be at least close to the player Mitchell is at 18 million a year instead of the max Mitchell has. 3 former lottery picks. 3 unprotected picks
Most rebuilding teams are without any semblance of identity and don’t play fun basketball. The Jazz will manage to have both. For starters, Sexton, Markkanen, Vanderbilt, THT, and Walker Kessler can all be electrifying talents on the court. On top of that, with a loaded draft on the way, Utah could easily find a star to build their roster around. The Jazz wanted six picks for Mitchell and fell short of that, but they still run away with this trade.
THT and Kessler have done nothing!
Lauri Markkanen (https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/markkla01.html) had a red-hot first two seasons in Chicago and was one of the league’s brightest stars, being named to the top 25 players under 25 in 2018 and ‘19 (https://fansided.com/nba/25-under-25/?tab=2021). As an oversized wing, he can knock down shots from deep and bang around in the paint on defense, making him a lethal weapon alongside Bojan Bogdanocivh as a catch-and-shoot threat.
Bojan won't be here! I doubt he plays any wing. Might have to play the 5 more than the 4 with Udoka's ankle and Kessler's youth
Like any rookie, he will have a bit of a learning curve as he transitions to the NBA, but his Summer League performance suggests he is as ready as a player can be to make the leap.
we'll see what the roster looks like in a few weeks but right now he's behind a few guys with experience
Will he be in front of Clarkson or Sexton on the depth chart? Nope. In fact, he may even be behind Malik Beasley and Jared Butler, but by 2024, he will be a solid starting guard on an absolutely loaded team. The Jazz stole Walker Kessler from the Wolves, and they did it again with Agbaji.
Clarkson!
yeah they stole Kessler. Only took the 3rd best player in Jazz history at his peak :facepalm
The Jazz have a solid young core in Sexton, Markkanen, Agbaji, Butler, and the recent acquisitions from the Timberwolves. They are missing a superstar, although reasons stand that they’ll find one very, very soon (https://thejnotes.com/2022/08/23/what-2023-draft-prospects-should-the-utah-jazz-tank-for/) and first-year head coach Will Hardy can develop the franchise savior as he sees fit.
superstars are hard to come by. Ainge has a great track record. Better than anyone the team has ever had but it's still not a perfect science
The Thunder, Wizards, Pistons, Spurs, and Rockets have all gone through or are going through similar rebuilds, but they went from top-tier teams to middling teams, to cellar dwellers over the span of years. The Jazz were bonafide contenders up until last season, and by 2023 they could have a solid cast and a rookie like Victor Wembanyama or Scoot Henderson to put them over the top.
careful what you wish for. No one Victor's size had ever stayed healthy and dominated
Basically, they could start and finish a rebuild before teams with a head start even make the playoffs again.
they could but probably won't. The last tank didn't last long only because Gobert unexpectedly emerged

https://fansided.com/betsided/posts/donovan-mitchell-trade-makes-cleveland-cavaliers-nba-finals-contenders
Donovan Mitchell is an offensive superstar, ranking among the NBA's best since he entered the league. He excelled with Rudy Gobert as a lob partner and defensive anchor, and Mitchell now gets two versions of Gobert to work with in Mobley and Allen.
That was the biggest problem with the Jazz. They needed their offense to revolve around a 2 man game with Gobert and Mitchell and Mitchell wasn't up to the task. Conley and Gobert had to replace that
Garland also gives Mitchell something he rarely had in Utah (aside from the stints with the oft-injured Mike Conley): a running-mate capable of shouldering the load on occasion. Cleveland still has promising wing Isaac Okoro and key rotation pieces like Caris LaVert, Kevin Love, and Cedi Osman, so the versatile roster is plenty deep for a playoff run.
Conley was their 2nd best player two seasons ago
I'd argue this roster is a better one than Mitchell ever worked with in Utah, and the Jazz were always among NBA Finals favorites in his time with the franchise.
we'll see. No one on Cleveland is as good as Gobert. Mobley should be in time

The Jazz have 17 players on guaranteed contracts, two over the NBA’s maximum for opening night, and must shave at least two more players off their roster before they face the Denver Nuggets to begin the season on October 19.
might end up with more than that depending on how many picks and how many young guys they get
Just as the Suns would look to add Bogdanovic in hopes of pushing them over the top as contenders, the Boston Celtics, Miami Heat, Milwaukee Bucks, and Toronto Raptors could all use a player of his standing.
Toronto was supposedly after him earlier in the summer
Like Bogdanovic, Jordan Clarkson has universal trade value as one of the NBA’s leading sixth men and an instant scoring option off the bench.
doubt it is universal
Like Bogdanovic, Jordan Clarkson has universal trade value as one of the NBA’s leading sixth men and an instant scoring option off the bench.
every team needs a gunner for their culture!
After an underwhelming summer, the Miami Heat could also use a player like Clarkson to lift their offense which was middle-of-the-pack last season.
an inefficient gunner doesn't make your offense better
Miami’s best pathway to acquire Clarkson would likely revolve around a Duncan Robinson trade, though the Jazz would need significant draft compensation to take on the remaining four years and $70 million left on his deal.
only if there is no other deal
The Dallas Mavericks lost Jalen Brunson in the offseason and could use another go-to scorer off the bench. After adding center JaVale McGee, Dallas could build a package around Dwight Powell and third-year guard Josh Green, though they might be unwilling to part with their 2025 first-round pick.

The Knicks haven’t had a player of Mitchell’s caliber since Carmelo Anthony. I think it’s important to remember what Anthony’s time with the Knicks was like though. They had multiple players who were past their prime, more people probably remember Anthony’s first season more because of Linsanity than they do Anthony, and the Knicks only made the playoffs three times during Anthony’s tenure. They lost twice in the first round and once in the second. That’s the legacy.
that tells you all you need to know about the Knicks!:roll:
If the Knicks weren’t really invested in getting Mitchell, I might be willing to give them an OK grade here. But they wanted him and felt like they needed him and then they lost out on him. So the Knicks are getting a D-.
Knicks dodged a bullet
Draft assets are not all created equal, and any team that Mitchell was going to be traded to would have a chance of being a very good team for as long as Mitchell was there. So when the Jazz were negotiating with New York, they knew that any picks included in a package would probably not have a chance of being high picks because Mitchell would probably stay with the Knicks for the rest of his career and keep the Knicks just good enough to not be eligible for the lottery.
still a lottery team to me even with Mitchell
It can be argued that the players that were available in New York were better than the players that were available from the Cavaliers, but since the Jazz’s main priority was garnering the best asset package, they got exactly what they wanted.
3 former lottery picks and one of them is basically Mitchell at 60 million less and 2 years younger
It’s never going to feel like a perfect deal when you trade away a star player, but this feels like it’s about as close as the Jazz were going to get to feeling like they got an ideal return. That’s good enough for a B+.
it will go down as a heist in time
When it comes to more specific on-court production, Mitchell adds shot creation along with pick-and-roll acumen that the Cavs were missing. When Garland wasn’t on the court last season, there wasn’t much creation and movement. Now, with Mitchell, the Cavs can almost constantly have an All-Star creator who can knock down a pull-up shot and run a smooth offense.
pick and roll isn't his thing iso is

https://sports.yahoo.com/3-trades-sixers-offer-jazz-204827601.html
Considering the lack of offensive development from Thybulle and the downward turn Korkmaz has taken recently, the Sixers could inquire about Beasley. The 6-year veteran out of Florida State averaged 15.1 points and shot 38.9% from deep for the Minnesota Timberwolves and he would be a big help to the team’s bench unit. Losing Niang would hurt, but it would show faith in Paul Reed to give him a shot as the primary backup big man.
don't want Niang. Prefer Beasley unless there are picks coming too
Gay is toward the end of his career 16 seasons in, but he can still be an asset to the bench unit. Korkmaz’s lack of production in the 2021-22 season is something to really examine and even with Gay’s declining production, he at least can get to the basket and make plays for himself and others.
that one I'd do
Clarkson, the 2021 6th Man of the Year, would be a big addition to the Sixers if they could make the move for him. He’s averaged 16.8 points in 189 games for the Jazz with only four starts so he understands what it takes to get into a groove quickly off the bench. The only real holdup here would be if the Jazz demand a first-round pick, which is a high possibility. Philadelphia cannot trade a first-round pick until 2029 and Utah won’t settle for that in this rebuild.
Springer not yet 20. Do that one all day long! Just please get rid of the bum!

Chris Fedor: The Cavs believed that their offer was going to be tough. That the best offer that they were willing to give to the Utah Jazz could have been beaten and maybe even should have been beaten by the Knicks or another team. The Knicks were always the most likely landing spot for Donovan Mitchell because they have a horde of draft picks. So when the Cavaliers and Jazz had conversations around summer league about two months ago, that’s when they first had the conversations. The cows left those conversations saying, yeah, probably not happening. Those weren’t very productive. They want way too much for somebody like Donovan Mitchell, and we just can’t do it (https://podcasts.apple.com/ph/podcast/how-donovan-mitchell-landed-with-the-cleveland-cavaliers/id1339173433?i=1000578191457).

Chris Fedor: Okay, that was about two months ago. But as you know, things change in the NBA. And behind all of this, I think it needs to be pointed out that president of basketball operations Koby Altman, and Utah Jazz General Manager Justin Zanick are close. They have a personal relationship, and they have a working relationship. And both of them are good. In fact, I would say, of all the executives around the NBA, the guy that Koby may be closest to on a personal level is Justin Zanick (https://podcasts.apple.com/ph/podcast/how-donovan-mitchell-landed-with-the-cleveland-cavaliers/id1339173433?i=1000578191457).
– via Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/ph/podcast/how-donovan-mitchell-landed-with-the-cleveland-cavaliers/id1339173433?i=1000578191457)
Chris Fedor: And on top of that, you know, both teams have completed multiple trades since Koby came in charge and since Justin Zanuck was making decisions for the Jazz, so I think that helped with negotiations and keeping everybody in the loop and trying to keep these conversations as private as possible, and not throwing lottery marketing’s name out in the media and Collin Sexton’s name and all that kind of stuff. So, you know, as the offseason progress, about two weeks ago, the Cavs finally had a feeling of, hey, we might be in this thing. We might have the pieces that Utah actually wants (https://podcasts.apple.com/ph/podcast/how-donovan-mitchell-landed-with-the-cleveland-cavaliers/id1339173433?i=1000578191457).
– via Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/ph/podcast/how-donovan-mitchell-landed-with-the-cleveland-cavaliers/id1339173433?i=1000578191457)
Chris Fedor: And New York may not be real about what they’re going to give to the debt. They might not give the Jazz everything that they could and everything that the Jazz want. So that was about like two weeks ago or so the Cavs thought, hey, there is a path to this thing. And then talks broke down again. So, or at least real talks about something actually transpiring broke down again. And then as you got into late last week, an early this week, and the Knicks continued to hem and haw, the next being the team that everybody thought was going to make the best offer to the Jazz. They wanted to keep certain pieces out of the deal. And then they agreed to the contract extension with RJ Barrett, like that changed the landscape a little bit. And Koby Altman reached back out to Justin Zanick. I believe it was Tuesday morning, and said, ‘Hey, is there something that we can do here? Like what is it that you would need from us in order for this to get done? ‘ (https://podcasts.apple.com/ph/podcast/how-donovan-mitchell-landed-with-the-cleveland-cavaliers/id1339173433?i=1000578191457)

Chris Fedor: And obviously the Cavaliers said, if you want Jarrett Allen, if you want to Darius Garland, if you want Evan Mobley, that is a nonstarter. That is not happening. But we will give you future draft capital. And we know that you want future draft capital. So then, you know, about 48 hours later, the Jazz said, ‘Hey, we like the package that you are offering us of all of the things that have been offered to us. We like what you have to offer us the best a combination of young talented pieces, with Ambaji, with Sexton, and the draft capital that you’re willing to give up with unprotected pits.’ So in part, because the Knicks took the approach that they took the Cavs were able to swoop in there, and they were able to give the Jazz ultimately what they thought was the best offer out there (https://podcasts.apple.com/ph/podcast/how-donovan-mitchell-landed-with-the-cleveland-cavaliers/id1339173433?i=1000578191457).

Jake Fischer: But when he talked to Cavs personnel, and when you have talked to them over the last 12 months or so, especially as they’ve kind of taken this next step towards contention and a post-LeBron era. For a team like Cleveland to build a contender with star power and multiple All-Stars — it’s hard to do that in free agency, right? (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/inside-the-cavaliers-shocking-donovan-mitchell-trade/id1618992995?i=1000578194689)

Jake Fischer: So Collin Sexton clearly wanted to get paid, there was a big gap. We talked about this with Chris Fedor here a couple of weeks back that, ironically, being that he ends up going to the Jazz that Jordan Clarkson’s contract that takes up the $13 mil dollar number that Cleveland was comfortable with. Sexton wanted $20 million. We talked about the Jazz’s interest in Collin Sexton most recently t when we had Michael Scotto on a few weeks ago. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/inside-the-cavaliers-shocking-donovan-mitchell-trade/id1618992995?i=1000578194689) But I mean, Kobe Altman’s front office did the damn thing.

Sounds to me like the best offer was early on before they signed Mitchell Robinson to his extension. Robinson, Barrett and at least 3 unprotected. The Knicks picks will likely be better even if it was just two unprotected. Than The Knicks didn't seem to want to give up anything. They played it right. Mitchell doesn't do that much for them especially after signing Brunson. For the Cavs it makes more sense. The GM's being buds probably made it easy to get Sexton's deal done. The Jazz knew exactly what he wanted already.

Though just 6 feet, 2 inches, the guard has an incredible frame to develop into and seems everything that he does seems to be right on the edge of becoming better and greater every time he takes the floor. He still needs to work on his shooting, but as a creator he is ready for the NBA now.

He is projected to be a Desmond Bane clone (https://www.nbadraft.net/players/ochai-agbaji/), using his strength and size to guard a variety of positions while raining down threes. He could transition to be a guard and wing, like Kaly Thompson or Danny Green. If he starts playing elite defense, he could become a Kawhi Leonard type of player, who new coach Will Hardy (https://www.nba.com/jazz/news/five-things-to-know-about-utah-jazz-head-coach-will-hardy) helped develop.

At the start of trade talks in July, New York offered Utah a Donovan Mitchell package including RJ Barrett, Obi Toppin, Mitchell Robinson and three unprotected first-round picks, sources tell ESPN. Jazz turned down that offer and Robinson signed a $60M extension to stay w/ NY. https://t.co/3eDg2Mf7f1

that was the one to take. Got greedy
The Jazz got two decent players and a promising rookie, although RJ Barrett is clearly the best player offered. Obi Toppin has been fairly disappointing, although Mitchell Robinson has been a solid backup center. Plus, three picks is exactly what the Jazz got in the real deal.

Bojan Bogdanovic is in a reflective mood. Understandably so. Croatia’s tower of strength declares that FIBA EuroBasket 2022 will be the end of the line for his international career. Meanwhile, the dust is still settling from the Jazz’s demolition. Utah hasn’t one cornerstone in place. OKC might already have three, depending how you view Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Giddey and Holmgren.
maybe they do have their cornerstone? Who knows. No one was talking about Gobert in 2013-14
Which brings us back to that Favors trade (https://www.oklahoman.com/story/sports/2021/09/29/okc-thunder-derrick-favors-brings-veteran-leadership-after-jazz-trade/5893801001/) from Utah to Oklahoma City. Favors, by the way, is still on the Thunder’s roster. He’s due $10.2 million this season on an expiring contract.
be gone by the deadline
The pick Utah sent to OKC in the Favors’ trade is top-10 protected in 2024. If Utah’s pick falls from No. 11 to No. 30, it conveys to Oklahoma City.
very unlikely
If the pick doesn't convey to the Thunder in 2024, it moves back to 2025 with the same top-10 protections. Who knows where the league will be by then, but there’s a chance the Jazz will still be amid its rebuild.
no reason to think they won't suck still
Odds are the Jazz pick will convey to the Thunder in one of those three years, but the trades of Gobert and Mitchell have certainly dampened OKC’s odds.
optimistic. They will suck for quite a while likely

Basically the Knicks thought they were the only ones who could get a deal done, so it'd get close and then the Knicks would take something out hoping to get the Jazz to buckle. Jazz always said they have other offers and Knicks didn't believe them, so felt safe playing chicken.

Apparently, though, the Knicks’ failed trade pursuit could have had nothing to do with their offer but rather more on the Jazz’s stance about where to move Mitchell. According to Ric Bucher of Fox Sports, some Utah officials were not happy that the All-Star guard wanted out, so they sent him to the Cavs in what they view as a “payback” instead of helping him fulfill a dream of playing for his hometown team in New York (https://clutchpoints.com/jazz-rumors-knicks-collateral-damage-in-utahs-alleged-payback-against-donovan-mitchell/).

so would they have kept Gobert if Mitchell didn't want out?
“I think he has a bright future,” Gobert told Eurohoops when asked about the Mitchell trade. “He’s one of the best young players in his position. He’s going to keep getting better. I think it’s a great opportunity for him to just get to a new system, a new team and be able to show what he can do.” (https://www.eurohoops.net/en/nba-news/1385771/rudy-gobert-great-opportunity-for-mitchell-time-will-tell-if-jazz-were-right-with-rebuilding/)

The Jazz didn’t stop there and, on September 1st, the Mitchell trade was announced. Utah got back Lauri Markkanen, plus Collin Sexton, Ochai Agbaji and three Draft picks. “That’s what Danny Ainge decided to do,” Gobert said to Eurohoops. “Sometimes you always have to explore all different options. That’s what they did. Time will tell if it was good or not. I think he definitely did a great job in getting as many assets as possible. ” (https://www.eurohoops.net/en/nba-news/1385771/rudy-gobert-great-opportunity-for-mitchell-time-will-tell-if-jazz-were-right-with-rebuilding/)

When I was critical of Mitchell, I did not pull punches. I wrote and talked publicly about how his defense needed to improve, about his sometimes poor shot selection and about his need to play within a game rather than trying to rise above a game. Mitchell is not a perfect basketball player. But I never thought that Mitchell lacked effort.

Ultimately, this was a deal the Jazz had to make, and the return was more than solid, and even if none of the players in return end up being at the level of Donovan Mitchell, the sheer volume of assets can help them trade for a star in the future, or gives them plenty of extra shots to draft a star. Was this a perfect trade? By all means, no. But was this a trade that the Jazz needed to make so they could move on with the future of the franchise and begin building for the next successful era in Utah basketball? Yes.
Sexton is already close to Mitchell and two years younger and 60 million in savings! The lottery pick this year has better size. Shot better. Has to play more D. I'd be surprised if they don't end up with multiple players comparable to Mitchell. Will there be another Gobert is the question? Much tougher to find the franchise player

Point guard: Mike Conley, Ochai Agbaji, Jared Butler
I think Ochai is a 2. Be nice if he was a 1 with Sexton's game
I highly doubt Ochai Agbaji will start over Mike Conley, but I think veterans like Stanley Johnson, Malik Beasley, and Rudy Gay will be relegated to the end of the bench in favor of some younger guys.
no sense having Beasley on the team if he's not playing. I have him as the starter once Clakson is gone
Your missing some guys but who cares when you're doing an article on their roster I guess! :facepalm
Udoka/Kessler
Markkanen/Vanderbilt/Johnson
Fontecchio/Alexander-Walker/Bolmaro/Juzang/
Beasley/Horton-Tucker/Agbaji/Sneed
Sexton/Butler
It’s also worth noting that the Jazz are probably not done making moves. Beasley, Clarkson, Conley, Bogdanovic, and Rudy Gay all have some amount of trade value. As the current roster stands, this is the depth chart, but expect movement and guys like Johnny Juzang to move up from the G-League Stars as the season goes on.
why would we expect a team full of young guys to go to a two way guy unless injuries dictate it? Many guys ahead of Juang right now. 17 guaranteed contracts!
Their current roster has a lot of scoring potential, and if Kessler can become a solid defender then the Jazz have their blueprint for the future. They need a star, but odds are they’ll find one with their seemingly endless new draft picks.
odds aren't that high. Look at Jazz history. And not all stars are the same. Gobert carried a franchise. Mitchell rode his coattails. Who's the next guy you can build around? Maybe it's someone already here? Always fun to see who rises to the top as Gobert did with Hayward, Kanter, Favors and Burks

There are few complete teams in the league. Cleveland now has one. The Eastern Conference is stacked, sure, but the Cavaliers should expect to compete for a top-four seed at minimum, and the new-found balance of the roster makes +6000 to win the NBA Finals a steal.
complete with their tiny backcourt?
I'd argue this roster is a better one than Mitchell ever worked with in Utah, and the Jazz were always among NBA Finals favorites in his time with the franchise.

Following the departure of Donovan Mitchell, many around the league are anticipating the Jazz looking to move Jordan Clarkson, Bojan Bogdanovic and/or Mike Conley before the trade deadline. Clarkson has generated the most interest thus far with the Memphis Grizzlies, Milwaukee Bucks, Sacramento Kings and Toronto Raptors said to be teams with initial interest (https://www.si.com/fannation/nba/fastbreak/news/inside-donovan-mitchell-trade-negotiations-cavaliers-jazz-knicks-lakers-nba-news-rumors-brett-siegels-scoop) following Rudy Gobert’s departure earlier this offseason, sources told Fastbreak.

Along with Barrett, the Knicks had offered up former first-round pick Obi Toppin, Evan Fournier and two unprotected first-round picks, along with a couple of other protected picks and swaps, those sources added. Utah was looking for at least three unprotected first-round picks and had been consistently asking for four first-round picks from New York (https://www.si.com/fannation/nba/fastbreak/news/inside-donovan-mitchell-trade-negotiations-cavaliers-jazz-knicks-lakers-nba-news-rumors-brett-siegels-scoop).

Charlotte Hornets: While they did make a competitive offer for Donovan Mitchell that drew some interest within Utah’s front-office, according to a league source, the Charlotte Hornets find themselves where they have been all offseason long – trying to find ways to move forward and be a competitive team in the Eastern Conference. Charlotte has expressed interest in bringing back former All-Star guard Kemba Walker, assuming he is bought out by the Detroit Pistons (https://www.si.com/fannation/nba/fastbreak/news/inside-donovan-mitchell-trade-negotiations-cavaliers-jazz-knicks-lakers-nba-news-rumors-brett-siegels-scoop).

Michael Scotto: Let’s start by looking at this for the Cavaliers that left. Ideally, Collin Sexton’s camp wanted $20 million annually. Getting $18 million annually is a win overall for a guy that missed most of last season with a torn meniscus. From what I heard, Cleveland was not willing to go above the luxury tax or move assets like a draft pick (https://*********.com/lists/cavaliers-rumors-donovan-mitchell-kevin-love-caris-levert-ricky-rubio-lebron-james/) of some kind to shed Cedi Osman’s salary theoretically to pay Sexton closer to that $18 million annual range. In the end, with Sexton prepared to take the qualifying offer for this season and unrestricted free agency looming next summer, Cleveland didn’t want to lose him for nothing. By including Sexton in the Donovan Mitchell trade, it worked out well for both slides.

Ideally, the Jazz find themselves in a situation similar to Boston in 2017 where they have once again established themselves as a bonified playoff team by 2026, while the Cavaliers or Timberwolves have fallen to the dregs of the NBA, and an already winning roster in Utah can add another player from high in the lottery in a draft swap.
not likely

A 35% three-point shooter, he has improved slightly over the last five seasons and is a reasonable spot up forward who can still bang around in the paint. On a contender, he would have a role off the bench.
they'll hope he has a role. Last season was disappointing. Two more years on his deal. Good luck!
His value isn’t super high, but this is what I envision a trade looking like. The trade would have to happen after October 10th, since Gallinari is a recently signed player, but by taking an injured Gallinari, the Jazz manages to get a first-round pick for a player who might not be worth it.
that would be nice. Gallanari only a one year deal?

But let’s say that Conley wants to be here and is OK seeing out the rest of his contract in Utah. He would be an incredible guy to have in the locker room to mentor the young players on the Jazz roster. There’s not many people who would be better suited and more valuable in that role.
and Butler sits or plays with the Stars where he already showed plenty? He needs to go
I completely agree with you that if the Jazz want to make the most out of this rebuild, they have to lose a lot of games and try to get the best odds in the draft lottery. The goal is to get top prospects, and I think that the Jazz are more aware of this than anyone else.
Clarkson will help you lose a lot of games. Who wants him taking minutes from someone or who wants to watch that shit show?
Competition between Walker Kessler and Udoka Azubuike will be very fun this year and so will watching the development of both players. With opportunity to play heavy minutes, I’d expect that both guys are going to show different strengths and weaknesses through the first couple months of the season and we’ll learn a lot.
Should be Udoka's to lose. He showed he could play last year. Rather he can stay healthy remains to be seen. Kessler should be with the Stars if he's not ready. Need a young vet though that could be Lauri if Kessler isn't ready

It’s worth noting that Gobert left the Jazz on bad terms (https://thejnotes.com/2022/06/24/rudy-gobert-erases-utah-jazz-instagram/). That being said, beef with fanbases is not grounds to keep him out of the Hoops Hall when his time comes. After trading for Talen Horton-Tucker, Ochai Agbaji (https://thejnotes.com/2022/09/03/ochai-agbaji-best-part-mitchell-trade/), Collin Sexton, and Stanley Johnson, Jared Butler (https://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/4395695/jared-butler) might be the odd man out in the backcourt. After a rookie campaign in which he only saw the court in half the games and got a single start, it’s safe to say any team trading for him is gambling. They would be going after him based on his college career, although let’s be honest, he had an amazing time at Baylor.
Johnson again? Butler is really the only pg out of those guys
Lucas Nogueira

No thanks on Bertans
The Jazz have 17 on their roster, we need to get rid of 2 not bring in 3 for 1
doubt that is a big concern. Competition is good
Bojan, Mike, and Rudy are good as gone. Though it might take a while to trade Gay, since the likeliest trade for him is Boston and Danilo Gallinari can't be traded until October. However, I don't see the Jazz getting a first-round pick for him as Boston has other players/options they can consider. At this point, I'd be willing to trade him straight across for an injured Gallinari — just to be rid of him
yep. Getting rid of him and not giving assets would be a deal to take
I hope the Jazz keep Clarkson — at least for a while. If he ends up being the sole remaining veteran with more than 3 years experience, he'll become the alpha-male on a team full of youngsters — which I suspect will drive his trade value through the roof by the trading deadline.
might make him untradable. I want no part of it that is for sure. Never did! Rather have Dante
Beasley and Fontecchio are young enough to be part of the rebuild and both could be our starters, give them Conley, Bogey and Clarkson for that same deal plus Munk.

When Utah Jazz center Udoka Azubuike arrived at the Basketball Without Borders Africa camp held in Cairo, Egypt in late August, the significance of his presence there wasn’t initially apparent to him. (https://www.sltrib.com/sports/jazz/2022/09/09/utah-jazz-center-udoka-azubuikes/) Sure, it was his first time back on the African continent since he emigrated from Nigeria to the United States about 10 years ago, but that itself didn’t put him in an overly sentimental mood.

“It didn’t really hit me until we actually started the camp. The Sacramento Kings (https://www.sactownroyalty.com/) have been tanking, trying to win but ultimately losing, for decades. Despite all their efforts, they’ve never landed that franchise piece. As fine players as were DeMarcus Cousins and Tyreke Evans, as solid as De’Aron Fox and Tyrese Haliburton are, none were THAT guy and it’s kept them in the doldrums all this time.
and yet Cousins was an all NBAer that was hyped as one of the best!
The Utah Jazz tried that avenue with Mike Conley who turned out to be an excellent veteran, but not the “right” one.
Not sure he wasn't right. Max contract Mitchell and a coach that refused to make adjustments in the playoffs for whatever bizarre reason were the bigger issues. Conley was the best fit next to their franchise player Gobert they had at that position by far. It needed to be Mitchell but wasn't

Two years ago, the Jazz had the best regular season in the NBA. Since then, they have had two disappointing playoff losses, and will probably post one of the worst records in the league in 2022-23. But with their draft capital, they could turn it around in as fast as a year or two. The Pistons, Spurs, Hornets, Pelicans, and even the Grizzlies were middling teams for several years hoping to finally make it big in the draft, and the Jazz could manage to do it in a single season if only one of their four picks hits big. Even if two of the picks result in average players, the rebuild will be over fast.
unlikely to be only a year or two though it was only a bit over a year when Gobert emerged and they were good though of course the Jazz still tried to tank despite that!

What’s not to like? A 6’9” power forward, and former McDonald’s All-American, he slipped to the second round in the 2018 NBA Draft and has played for the Nuggets and Wolves. Last year, he started 67 games for the playoff-bound Wolves alongside Karl-Anthony Towns, Patrick Beverly, Anthony Edwards, and D’Angelo Russell. Because of the roster around him, he only posted 6.9 points, which is up from his career average of 5.4 points per game.
old school 4 in today's game. Plenty not to like which is why he's on the Jazz and all NBAer/DPOTY/future HOFer Gobert is on the Wolves
While he isn’t a star by any means, he has already established himself as a decent fourth or fifth option with the starting rotation and is only 23 years old, so he could still show some vast improvement. The Lakers want him as a cheap player to get some valuable bench minutes, but the Jazz see him as a piece to help solidify a young core around the star they will eventually find in the draft.
probably won't be starting and at 7 points a game he's hopefully not your 4th or 5th option
Vanderbilt is not a shooting threat by any means, but as a starter, he averaged well over eight rebounds and can defend multiple positions anywhere on the floor. The Jazz are in desperate need of defense, especially behind a depleted frontcourt.
they were desperate for D. Now they are just desperate
I truly believe with the addition of Jarred Vanderbilt the #Lakers (https://twitter.com/hashtag/Lakers?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) would have the best defense in the #NBA (https://twitter.com/hashtag/NBA?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw).

why would anyone think that Davis and Lebron will be on the floor? They need a 3rd star to carry them when those guys aren't playing.
The Lakers also want some additional defensive prowess. On top of that, Vanderbilt is already an above-average role player with elite physical gifts. His size and grace on the court suggest that he could soon be one of the most consistent starters in the league.
where do you come up with this shit? Yes he's young and can play but nothing screams out NBA starter even if he did start last year on a play in team. Unless he develops a shot he's a backup ideally
I don’t think that he will ever be an All-Star, but he is poised for a breakout (https://thejnotes.com/2022/07/26/utah-jazz-3-players-break-next-season/) year and could show the league that a power forward can play third fiddle to an elite backcourt. Every team needs some role players, and the Jazz found a great one before they even get their star.
the guy rebounds and plays D. Let's not get carried away. If the Lakers want to give up unprotected picks for him see ya!

Nobody is perfect, and there are certainly some concerns, as there are with almost every player. Sexton’s 3-point shooting efficiency has steadily decreased over his time in the NBA and he hasn’t always lived up to his defensive potential.
not counting the 11 games last year he's still shot over 37% from 3 and his overall % has went up so he's became better at finishing and/or mid range. What kind of defensive potential does he have at 6'1? If he gives any kind of effort at that end he'll be better than Mitchell

https://www.slcdunk.com/2022/9/10/23346661/latest-utah-jazz-trade-rumors-jazz-reveal-trade-value-for-bogdanovic-clarkson-and-beasley
If there’s one thing we’ve learned this offseason, once Danny Ainge sets a price for a player, he’ll stick with it. If a team is willing to pay that price, then the trade will happen. It’s been such a breath of fresh air this offseason to see Danny Ainge provide a dominant level of negotiation with the Jazz, and there’s a level of comfort knowing that if the Jazz’s price isn’t met, the trade doesn’t happen.
we'll see. I think it's better they aren't on the team than waiting for Danny's price. Beasley can start the year with the Jazz. The others need to go somehow
This also bodes very well for the future. Danny Ainge has put a value on assets and picks that the front office beforehand hasn’t had. If you don’t remember, the Jazz’s two previous offseasons were the death knell for the most recent roster. The Jazz traded a first-round pick just to get off of Derrick Favors contract after giving him a contract no other team would have given. They made draft-day trades of their picks to the Knicks (https://www.postingandtoasting.com), only to see the Knicks use the exact same picks to move up in the draft (maybe that’s why the Knicks thought they could fleece the Jazz for Donovan Mitchell). They decided to draft a center in the first round that no one had in their mock earlier than the second round, in stead of drafting Desmond Bane. There are a lot of reasons the most recent iteration of the Jazz didn’t work out, the catastrophic failures of the recent leadership were likely the biggest reason of all.
and they still had no starting PF! Stop with the Bane stuff already. They needed a center. Right now you are seeing why you need to be developing guys at every position all the time. Udoka showed he can play last year. Now you go into the season with some experience. If you want to argue there was a better 5 than Udoka fine. Bane would have sat the bench and you would have wished they picked someone else
I hope Jazz will trade JC instead to Bulks. Coz Lebron doesn't bode well with Clarkson's game.Their chemistry, even though they're friends, didn't really fit well in their last stint together in the Cleveland playoffs. And Bulks really needs a reliable scorer on the bench.
Clarkson's game sux for anyone. If they fleece a 1st from someone for him Ainge should get executive of the year

In his fairness, I don’t think his role with the Lakers was conducive to his success. He just isn’t a good shooter and expecting him to succeed at doing so was setting him up for failure. Nonetheless, for THT to have any success with the Jazz, he must improve this aspect of his game. Even if he can become an average shooter, his ability to create off the dribble will become significantly easier. As it stands, most teams in the league are happy with ignoring him on the perimeter.
expecting him to become an average shooter is asking a lot. He's awful!

Kessler, Juzang, and Agbaji all had decorated college careers, but with the exception of Agbaji, none of them were considered lottery picks by anyone. None of these guys have a super high ceiling, mostly due to the fact that they may have already physically peaked, but that doesn’t mean the role players for the next era of Utah basketball haven’t already been signed.
two were picked higher than Rudy so stop predicting what they will be
His sophomore year was better than his junior year, and that lack of improvement is a big red flag for me. Apparently, it is for Utah as well, as he is the only player on a two-way deal, instead of the standard rookie contract. Maybe time with the G-League Stars will help him out, but I’m afraid Juzang just isn’t at the NBA level, and he may never get there.
Sneed? He looks like an NBA player. See if he can show something with the Stars. They should be good this year!
Fontecchio is not a defensive stopper, and with the modern NBA wing being a “three and D” type of player, I’m not confident he will be able to make the leap and defend with any sort of success. Still, shooting 40% from deep allowed Kyle Korver to thrive in the league, maybe Simone can have a similar story.
unlike most Euros he actually has some decent stats and has continued that in the Euro championships. He might get them a 1st by the trade deadline!
In his most recent college season, he averaged 4.6 blocks. That’s good enough o put him second in the country. He also put up 11.4 points, and much like the departed Stifle Tower, none of those came from behind the arc.
he shoots the 3
Kessler did not play in the Summer League, so we don’t have that insight, although it’s safe to say he will succeed if he can play to his strengths. He will never become an elite scorer like Embiid or Jokic, and he is not the best rebounder considering he stands at 7’1”, but he is a fantastic rim protector who could get some rebounding skills and work in the pick and roll with Collin Sexton. We think he might crack the starting five (https://thejnotes.com/2022/07/09/3-starting-center-options-utah-jazz-2022/), but expect him to be raw and error-prone, with the occasional flash of potential in season one.
can't see him over Udoka unless Udoka is hurt. Still need a vet in case Kessler isn't ready and to mentor these guys though that could be Lauri. Kessler is a Star until he proves otherwise. No reason to rush him
There’s no other way to say it: he can score. In the Summer League, he didn’t miss a beat, shooting 37% and averaging a cool 15 points. The Jazz may have found the point guard of the future to pair with Collin Sexton, meaning they can add forwards and centers in the upcoming drafts.
don't think he's a pg though is he? You think Stanley Johnson is a 2 so what do you care I guess!
Agbaji is ready to play now. There shouldn’t be too much of a learning curve. He can score, pass, and handle the ball. His defense isn’t bad. It’s clear he was a steal with the 14th pick, and he fell into Utah’s lap.
from what we saw with COTM no one is ready now. At least we don't have to worry about Hardy favoring players from his alma mater like with COTM. Maybe after the trade deadline he can step in for Beasley
With Agbaji, what you see is what you get. And what I see is a dominant scorer who can do a little bit of everything and has a lengthy NBA career ahead of him.
18 points a game and 1.6 assists is a dominant scoring pg!

August 5, 1976: The New Orleans Jazz traded a 1977 1st round draft pick (Kenny Carr was later selected), a 1978 1st round draft pick (Freeman Williams was later selected), a 1979 1st round draft pick (Magic Johnson was later selected) and a 1980 2nd round draft pick (Sam Worthen was later selected) to the Los Angeles Lakers for a 1977 2nd round draft pick (Essie Hollis was later selected) and a 1978 1st round draft pick (Jack Givens was later selected). This exchange was arranged as compensation for Utah signing veteran free agent Gail Goodrich on July 19, 1976.
Ouch! He almost helped them get to .500. The Maravich trade was even worse. Gave up everything to suck with Pete!
The Warriors are once again involved with trading away a draft pick that turned into gold, as in 1980, the team dealt away the rights to the No. 3 pick the day before the draft to the Boston Celtics, a pick that wound up becoming Hall-of-Fame big man Kevin McHale.
no mention of the Jazz passing on McHale for Dr. Dunkenstein!
If it isn’t clear by now, teams are much safer about trading away first-round picks these days.

Lauri Markkanen had an enormous game against Croatia, helping his team get to the quarter-finals and making history along the way. He had 43 points – a new Finnish national team record at a major FIBA event – 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, and 19/29 from the field, with 0 turnovers (https://www.eurohoops.net/en/eurobasket/1389587/lauri-markkanen-finland-croatia-eurobasket-2022/). “It was one of those nights in which it looked like I shot the ball and it always went in. Great win, I’m just trying to do what the team needs me to do. We knew that we can beat everybody when we play our best basketball: Croatia is a great team”, he said.

After all thanks to Markkanen’s game, Finland managed to make the Eurobasket quarterfinals for the first time since 1967 and he is happy to do it, not only for himself and his team but also about Petteri Koponen who led Finland back to respectability before Markkanen and he is still along for the ride: “When I made the team in 2015 it felt great and unreal to being in the same locker room with him. For him to say that, it means a lot. He’s a legend” (https://www.eurohoops.net/en/eurobasket/1389587/lauri-markkanen-finland-croatia-eurobasket-2022/).

https://thejnotes.com/2022/09/11/jazz-asking-price-malik-beasley-might-high/
The Jazz asking price on Malik Beasley might be too high
I'd set the price high on him. As long as they don't feel he will be a bad influence on their young guys he's young enough to keep around. Start him and play him big minutes and deal him at the trade deadline. Conley, Clarkson, Bojan and Gay need to go at whatever price!
When the Utah Jazz (https://thejnotes.com/) traded Rudy Gobert for picks and players, most of us assumed the players would not be here for very long. Patrick Beverly has already been shipped to Los Angeles for young talent, but Jarred Vanderbilt seems to be a part of the Jazz rebuild (https://thejnotes.com/2022/09/09/jarred-vanderbilt-front-center-rebuild/) and could play in SLC for quite a while.
I wouldn't get too attached to Vanderbilt or anyone yet
Rookie Walker Kessler and Leandro Bolmaro are very young and might fit the timeline, but 25-year-old Malik Beasley (https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/beaslma01.html#all_transactions) might be the next recent acquisition to go. The only issue is Utah seems to think he is worth a first-round pick (https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10048497-nba-trade-rumors-jazz-think-bogdanovic-clarkson-beasley-are-worth-1st-round-picks).
the only issue is they have other guys they need to move more urgently
The Jazz have the most picks out of anyone to finish this decade, but you can never have too much of a good thing. As far as tradable players go, Clarkson and Bogdanovic are the two most desirable players on the Jazz, and Beasley is probably a distant third.
and Conley is easily better than any of them

https://valleyofthesuns.com/2022/09/11/phoenix-suns-jazz-picks/
Bogdanovic has been linked most with Phoenix in recent weeks, with the Croatian currently playing with Suns big man Dario Saric at Eurobasket. He’s certainly worth a first-rounder, however it may be lottery, or at least top 10 protected.
Saric is probably one of the pieces coming to the Jazz
Clarkson will probably accrue a first-round pick as well, though that isn’t a guarantee. If Utah want a first for Beasley, then they may be best waiting until close to the trade deadline mid-season. It’s hard to envisage a team being desperate enough right now, but that may change as the season develops.
not sure how desperate you have to be to want to improve your team. Gambling on the bum Clarkson is desperate. Jazz know!
Still, it’s unlikely they’d necessarily give up two first-round picks for a combination of the above players. Rather, perhaps they’d heavily lower the protections, or even rid them all together. Would the Suns give up Jae Crowder, Dario Saric, Torrey Craig and Josh Okogie, along with a fully unprotected future first-round pick, for Bogdanovic and Clarkson?
don't love the guys they have. Too old! But if that's what you have to do to get rid of Clarkson do it!

https://factoryofsadness.co/2022/09/10/the-utah-jazz-may-have-blown-the-donovan-mitchell-trade-to-the-cleveland-cavaliers/
To say the Mitchell trade reminds me of the Jarrett Allen trade would be an understatement. Once again teams get next to nothing for something and the Cavs are far better for it. (https://factoryofsadness.co/2022/09/08/the-cleveland-cavaliers-can-no-longer-afford-to-trade-cedi-osman/)
3 former lottery picks and 3 unprotected 1sts isn't exactly nothing. Jazz will win this trade big!
So personally, I don’t think you could go wrong with either package but I do think the Cavs’ offer had a lot more talent in it, while the Knicks offered a better draft package. Some agree with this, some don’t but what can’t be argued is that the Jazz did bungle this trade; because while both trade packages were fine, neither was truly great. (https://factoryofsadness.co/2022/09/09/what-should-the-cleveland-cavaliers-starting-5-look-like/)
Getting a comparable player to Mitchell who is 2 years younger and makes 60 million less is great without the rest. Ainge did good. Could have done better early on it sounds like though
By all accounts, the Knicks screwed themselves out of a trade by playing chicken with the Jazz and the Jazz took a deal that quite honestly, isn’t that good from the Cavs. They’ll likely move Markkanen, and then hope they land a top draft pick in 2023 or 2024, otherwise, they’re really screwed.
I'm sure Lauri is available along with the rest of the roster. Cavs still have a small backcourt and a guy that doesn't play D or pass masquerading as an all star. Have fun Cleveland!

This statement from Towns came when prompted by CBS Sports to ease any panic from Wolves fans about pairing up with Rudy Gobert, who the Jazz traded to Minnesota for multiple draft picks this offseason. After all, both players are centers, so it will be interesting to see how that plays out. “I think I’m one of the best offensive players and talents the NBA has ever seen. (https://www.foxnews.com/sports/timberwolves-karl-anthony-towns-says-he-one-best-offensive-players-nba-history) So putting us together gives us really a whole spectrum of talent to use,” he said.

Unlike Manu Ginobili, this Argentine-Italian will not have a Hall of Fame career. If he does, it would be the most shocking career in NBA history. With Utah’s current roster, he might get real minutes just to see what he’s capable of, but I would expect him to get lost in the depth chart. He has three years left on his contract, so clearly, someone believed in him at one point, but I suspect he will be making a return to Europe in the next few years.
do you guys actually watch basketball or look at some stats only? He looks like a ball player to me. Need to fix the hitch in his shot but he's young and does a lot on the floor. You can see the Ginobli, Nocioni etc. in him for sure. Should be with the Stars to start the year probably and he did play well in the Gleague briefly last year
I have Jarred Vanderbilt projected to be the starting power forward for the Jazz, and even though Johnson is a similar scorer to Vanderbilt, they are not comparable players. Johnson lacks strength and physicality, preventing him from being an elite rebounder. Why did the Jazz take him? It’s simple: the Lakers just wanted him gone (https://thejnotes.com/2022/08/25/winners-losers-of-the-utah-jazz-latest-trade/).
Lauri should be the starting 4 I'd think but I guess he could be at the 5 especially if Udoka goes down again. Lakers liked Johnson. Like Bev a lot more naturally. Hopefully Johnson can get them something by the trade deadline
Allow me to be clear: until three or four years ago, I only followed the San Antonio Spurs. Before that, I did not pay much attention to the NBA as a whole, just the team and players I was a fan of. Since then, I’ve added to my repertoire a lot, but my knowledge of recent NBA history is lacking.
and you're writing this crap on a Jazz site now. Makes perfect sense :facepalm
While we think Walker Kessler might end up in the starting five (https://thejnotes.com/2022/09/04/updated-jazz-depth-chart-donovan-mitchell-trade/) and is one of the better rookies on the roster, there are several more experienced players who rank above him, at least for now. Kessler’s ceiling is a Jakob Poeltl-type player, who is a decent rebounder, an okay scorer inside the paint, and a monster at protecting the rim. His floor is a Jahlil Okafor clone, who is just too slow to play in the league and is unable to space the floor.
one of their two 1st rounders will be one of the better rookies on the roster, really? He does shoot the 3. Nothing like Okafor who to his credit slimmed down and became more suited to today's game
The Jazz have their second option in Sexton, a passing guard in Agbaji, and then their anchor in Vanderbilt. All they need is a superstar. At 22 years old Vanderbilt could improve significantly, but even if he doesn’t, he’s a solid NBA player and will be with the Jazz for a long time (https://heavy.com/sports/boston-celtics/jazz-think-highly-jarred-vanderbilt/), and is a central part of their rebuild.
the guy that has averaged 24 a game already by 23 is their 2nd option? Agbaji is moving right to the starting lineup against experienced guys? Vanderbilt is starting because he did last year?
Beasley has had some legal trouble in the past (https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/30965255/minnesota-timberwolves-malik-beasley-suspended-12-games-guilty-plea), but that has never affected his on-court play, and since then he has cleaned up his act. If Utah keeps him, he and Clarkson will be a lethal bench unit capable of combining for well over 35 points each night. Beasley is exactly the type of guy you want off the bench: efficient, good at his role, and willing to stay in his lane.
Clarkson better be gone soon! Beasley is the starter until the trade deadline id he's still around in a couple weeks
Not only is Agbaji the third-best player Utah traded for, but he is also Utah’s best rookie (https://thejnotes.com/2022/09/10/ranking-utah-jazz-rookies-2022-23-season/) entering the season. The 14th overall pick led the Kansas Jayhawks to a March Madness victory, shooting 40% from three to score 18.8 points per game. His resumé precedes him:
the only lottery pick is their best rookie. Some hard hitting analysis
If the Jazz can add a star in the 2023 NBA Draft, Agbaji, Sexton, Kessler, and Vanderbilt could be an excellent supporting cast that could be immediate contenders. Agbaji spent four years at Kansas, so he is NBA-ready now (https://thejnotes.com/2022/09/03/ochai-agbaji-best-part-mitchell-trade/).
immediate contenders!
When most players hit the league, there is a bit of a learning curve. That won’t be the case for Ochai, as he shot 37% from the deeper NBA three-point line in the Summer League, and put up comparable numbers to his college ones.
Not one rookie came in under COTM and was ready. Maybe that will change under Hardy but with young vets on the team and the Stars down the highway a few minutes I can't see him not starting out with the Stars. Be in the roation after the trade deadline when he's hopefully ready
Oh, and he’s also lighting it up this summer in international play. The best Finnish baller ever, Markkanen could be a fringe All-Star for the next several years and is a great secondary scorer on a good team. A knockdown shooter, his game doesn’t really have any flaws, and he could even be due for a resurgence and enter the 20ppg club anytime soon.
fringe all star! How will they successfully tank with all this talent aboard?
I’m hoping the Jazz manage to get Victor Wembanyama, partly because he’s a generational talent, and party because the floor spacing with Sexton would be immaculate.
he's too big. Scoot or bust!
Sexton combines the volume scoring and efficiency of Mitchell with the hot hand that Jordan Clarkson occasionally gets. When Sexton starts to feel himself, there’s really no stopping him.
Mitchell is now efficient too!

This will actually be Henderson’s second go-around in the G League. He debuted for the team last May and quickly showed what he’s capable of, dropping 31 points against the Santa Cruz Warriors in only his second game. At just 17, Henderson dominated the league. He averaged 14 points, 5 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.7 steals per game. He hit 45 percent of his field goal attempts and knocked down 77 percent of his free throws.

“All summer, I didn’t really say much … I thought for sure I was going back home, I’m not gonna lie about that,” Mitchell said, (https://www.deseret.com/2022/9/14/23353633/donovan-mitchell-cleveland-cavaliers-utah-jazz-trade) “but when I found out where I was headed, who I was playing with, the group, the team, the coaching staff, I couldn’t be happier to be here, to be a part of this organization, be a part of this group, to join these phenomenal guys and add to it, and I think that for me is what I’m truly excited about.”

Donovan Mitchell disagrees that the now-broken-up Utah Jazz core “didn’t really believe in each other” as team CEO Danny Ainge said earlier this week (https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/34593315/donovan-mitchell-pushes-departure-utah-jazz-adamant-cleveland-cavaliers-really-build-special). “I don’t think we didn’t believe [in each other],” Mitchell told ESPN Wednesday on his first day in Cleveland as a Cavalier following a Sept. 1 trade. “I said at the end of the season, don’t trade [Rudy Gobert]. Let’s figure this out, let’s do. And that didn’t happen. For him to say that after six months around the team, I disagree. But you know, at the end of the day, that’s his decision.”

What's the definition of insanity — doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results? Yes, the Jazz would have been crazy to run back the same broken record again, all the while trying to again convince us Mitchell and Gobert were good buddies.
that insanity got Stockton and Malone to the finals. How about trying a new coach instead?

Fontecchio had been a breakout star for the Italians averaging 19.4 points per game, good for eighth-best among all EuroBasket performers while shooting an extremely efficient 49 percent from the floor and 45 percent from the three-point line.
ROTY?
Fontecchio was the last Jazzman competing at EuroBasket after Lauri Markkanen (https://kslsports.com/492050/new-jazz-forward-markkanen-dominates-at-eurobasket/) and Finland were eliminated by Spain on Tuesday in the round of eight.

SALT LAKE CITY – One day after his unfeigned press conference (https://kslsports.com/492479/ainge-jazz-really-didnt-believe-in-each-other/) on why the Utah Jazz traded two All-Stars this summer, Danny Ainge said he’s anticipating “more exciting basketball (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0DstQ7DXk8&feature=emb_title)” from the team this season.
losing exciting! :facepalm
“I don’t anticipate that our team is going to win as many games as we’d won,” Ainge admitted, “but I believe that it’s going to be more entertaining and more exciting basketball.”
they had the number one offense in the league. More exciting and entertaining than that?
“[We have two] first-round picks, one a lottery pick, we have a kid in [Lauri] Markkanen who’s had a fantastic summer this summer and just had 43 points and a big win, Talen Horton-Tucker — dynamic 21-year-old player,” Ainge said. “I think there’s a lot to be excited about. I’m excited about this team.”

Having spent four seasons at Kansas and being named the NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player after leading the Jayhawks to the national title, Agbaji likely carries the biggest expectations of any Jazz rookie into training camp.
Long term sure. Right now Simone is probably one of the top rookies in the league
Whereas in Cleveland Agbaji may have struggled to see the floor on a team that is likely to compete for the playoffs, the rookie will get plenty of playing time to develop his game for the Jazz this season.

https://www.deseret.com/2022/9/14/23339963/utah-jazz-went-from-best-record-to-rebuild-in-a-hurry
It seemed like it was going to work and the Jazz were clicking. It really came together in the Orlando bubble and looked like the Jazz could be in for a deep playoff run before they blew a 3-1 series lead (https://www.deseret.com/sports/2020/9/1/21410326/utah-jazz-denver-nuggets-game-7-nba-playoffs-donovan-mitchell-rudy-gobert-nikola-jokic-jamal-murray) to the Denver Nuggets in the opening round of the 2020 playoffs.
with COTM making no adjustments. He should have been gone. We have no idea what another coach and some tweeks to the roster might have done
The front office surveyed the landscape and didn’t overreact. It was the first season that this iteration of the Jazz had been together, they were missing Bogdanovic in the playoffs after he had surgery to repair a ligament in his wrist and it was all during the infamous pandemic season — nothing about it was normal.
still not sure they weren't better without Bojan
There was something there though, so the Jazz ran it back. They re-signed Clarkson, gave max extensions to Gobert and Mitchell, brought Derrick Favors back (https://www.deseret.com/sports/2020/11/25/21718627/derrick-favors-utah-jazz-nba-trade-free-agency-new-orleans-pelicans-return-feels-like-home) into the fold and went after it all again.
right there they had a chance. Sign a starting 4 instead of a backup center and let Clarkson go
But misfortune struck when injuries to Conley and Mitchell hampered the team (https://www.deseret.com/2021/5/18/22428792/utah-jazz-injuries-donovan-mitchell-and-mike-conley-turned-into-jazz-assistant-coaches) in the postseason and the Los Angeles Clippers exposed the Jazz’s weaknesses.
Mitchell forcing his way on to the floor over a team doctor's advice. That right there tells you what a big part of the issues were
Not only was the spirit of the players heavily damaged by that loss, but it seemed that head coach Quin Snyder (https://www.deseret.com/2022/6/5/23153271/quin-snyder-stepping-down-makes-way-for-a-new-voice-in-the-utah-jazz-locker-room) didn’t take the loss very well either.
That's on him considering he once again refused to make any adjustments as Lue tried everything
The 2021-22 season, was entered with tempered hope. The Jazz still wanted to contend, but the core of Mitchell and Gobert had continually got the Jazz to the playoffs only for them to eventually lose steam and get bounced in one of the first two rounds. There wasn’t enough that was different, there wasn’t enough that was improved and the Jazz’s options were limited.
they've had lots of options. They chose badly from the time Gobert first emerged
While it feels like it was just yesterday the Jazz were riding a high at the top of the league, it also feels like it’s been ages since they had a real shot of contending for a title. The hope is that the next shot is not too far down the road and that the journey ends with a better result.
I think they had a shot at the Bucks. They matched up well with them. COTM and Mitchell's selfishness didn't give them that chance

https://www.slcdunk.com/2022/9/14/23354242/end-of-the-drama-for-the-utah-jazz-donovan-mitchell-on-the-trade-and-the-dominance-of-danny-ainge
The first interesting point was that Donovan Mitchell was apparently “shocked” by the Royce O’Neale trade and mentions how he was his best friend. That right there makes it clear that Danny Ainge and the Utah Jazz (https://www.slcdunk.com) were all in on the rebuild at that point. The days of making signings like they did for Eric Paschall were over.
need young vets like him. Him and Forrest would have been good to have around
Which, by the way, we should be surprised at from recent comments by Ainge, but we’ll get to those in a second. It was at this point that I’m sure Donovan Mitchell knew that Danny Ainge and company were doing what was best for the Jazz. It was the right thing too, this Jazz team had bent over backwards to make things work for Donovan Mitchell and in the end it wasn’t good enough. If we’re being honest, it was never going to be good enough. Mitchell obviously had his sights set on other places, mainly New York, and he all but confirms it in this interview.
trade him for vets. Hire a new coach. Dump Clarkson. Get a starting 4. One of the best teams in the league
So Ainge got to work. What we were told was that Quin Snyder resigned and the Jazz “couldn’t get him to sign an extension.” Sure, we’ll play along with that little story. But we’re going to give Ainge credit for the transition from Snyder to Will Hardy. Remember Will Hardy? Feels like ages ago he was brought on.
Not sure what happened there but the fact that COTM still had a job two seasons after the bubble fiasco was a joke! Can't give Ainge any credit for that
He then traded Royce O’Neale for a 1st round pick from Brooklyn. After that he made the Rudy Gobert trade. Is that what we’ll call it? It needs a name because it was such a monumental haul it put every move in the league at a standstill. The aftershocks were so strong and longlasting it played a big part in keeping Mitchell from an easy ride to New York.
and the Jazz likely lose that trade
It’s absolutely worth a listen. Clarkson mentions how it hurt what happened with the trade and that “maybe one of the sides gave up.” I’m not quite sure if he’s talking about the Jazz or one of the players, but it’s a reminder that Clarkson is a great teammate and he truly cared about this Jazz team.
he cares so much he completely ignores them when the ball is in his hands!
Whatever happens this summer with Clarkson, he’s been a great ambassador for the team and if he’s part of the rebuild, that’s fantastic. If not, you can be he’ll have Jazz fans rooting for him wherever he ends up.
I'm just rooting that he's gone in the next week and half along with the other vets

It’s a little surprising that all three of them have made it this far into September without being traded yet, honestly. It might just be a matter of time, or when Ainge and Zanik can work out the best possible deals and continue to get as much draft capital as possible. Ainge talked a little bit yesterday about the 2023 draft class, and actually mentioned 2024 being “even better”. The Jazz have 19 players on roster right now, which obviously will need to be trimmed down in some way before the season begins. If you like trades and draft picks, this has been your summer!
2024 is even better!
I did a minutes analysis based on pure speculation and what I found is that the Jazz are currently sitting at 10 players on the roster listed as guard. There are 144 potential minutes available for the 1-3 with 3 guys who can't play guard likely to share some of those minutes at the 3 (Sim1 is primarily a 3 while Vando and Lauri can both play either the 3 or 4)
I feel like it's safe to assume that Sexton is going to get significant minutes, as many as 30 mpg, if Conley, Beasley and JC remain in Utah they're all likely to get 20+ mpg and between Sim1, Vando and Lauri at least half of the minutes at the 3 will be taken. Leaving roughly 30 minutes per night to spread between Agbaji, THT, NAW, Butler, Bolmaro and JJ.
So in answer to your question, keeping JC primarily takes minutes from those 6 players.
Agbaji and Bolmaro can start in the Gleague but Clarkson, Bojan, Conley and Gay need to be gone in the next week and a half!
I’m taking that as he has offers set up that set the floor of what they can get back. Bet he’s waiting for teams to get into training camp and hoping another team may get more desperate if their roster didn’t improve the way they hoped. That would then allow Danny to lever the asking price higher. If it doesn’t materialize, he can go back to his previous offer.
Take the best offers you can before camp. What you lose in a trade is gained by the young guys getting all the reps
Hearing Ainge talk about how the 2024 draft is better than 2023, I think he means depth wise. No player in 2024 is as hyped as Scoot and Wemby. But there is this real chance that the age restriction gets lowered and you get more depth than a usual draft. So it almost seems like Ainge isn't even thinking about the #1 or 2 pick.
the age limit might be why he's saying it's better. 2023 is supposed to be very deep
2. the nba scouting was bad at identifying high school talent but was too afraid to miss out on then next kobe or whoever
they didn't like scouting high schools and it was a lot easier to judge a guy that played a year of college than beat up on high school talent. One and done was bad for basketball
NIL deals may make the college route more attractive for top stars.
probably not for the top guys but it should certainly have a huge affect on things. If you're only going pro for the money you can stay in college now
I think the holdup for the trades isn't the price or protection, but the draft year. If they think 2024 is going to be equal or better than 2023 then they should be targeting at least 1 guaranteed pick 2024 pick
Shouldn't matter. Get the picks when you can. Can always trade them for a pick in another year. Most of the picks won't end up on the Jazz
As long as we're bad enough to not send OKC a pick in 2024 (and maybe 2025). Even better if MIN and CLE are even worse than UTA.
yeah right!

Spence asks Tony to guess which current Jazz player will have the longest tenure:
"Ochai Agbaji. If the Jazz had a 1RP, he would of been at or near the top of their draft board. The front office really really liked him and he's the type of 2 way athletic wing they haven't had"
— Dunzo (@Dunzod) September 9, 2022 (https://twitter.com/Dunzod/status/1568358344993423360?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)
that would be the smart guess anyway. Lottery pick from this year. He's bigger than Mitchell. Sounds like he's a better playmaker. Shot better. Got to play better D! They could end up with two guards at least better than Mitchell
Bane measured at 6’-5” height, 6’-4” wingspan, 216 lbs coming into the draft. He had better and more consistent high school and collegiate shooting numbers than Ochai Agbaji.
6'4 wingspan tells me he was never on the Wizard's radar especially since they needed a center and got one and he will likely be starting at the 5 this year. That's why you drafted him
It’s an excellent sign that the Utah Jazz front office and coaching staff are high on Agbaji. He profiles to start some guys and be a staple of the bench rotation during various points of the season.
he should start for the Stars. Too many young vets ahead of him
Initially, we should expect Jared Butler and Ochai Agbaji to lead the 2nd unit but should things unfold favorably in production and opportunity, Ochai could be starting often to exclusively by season’s end.
look at the roster. Why would we expect that? They have a Gleague team for a reason

https://thejnotes.com/2022/09/14/staff-debate-mitchell-trade-better-utah-jazz/
Contrary to popular belief, the Utah Jazz (https://thejnotes.com/) did much better when they sent Donovan Mitchell (https://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/3908809/donovan-mitchell) to the Cleveland Cavaliers than when they sent Rudy Gobert (https://www.nba.com/player/203497/rudy-gobert) to the Timberwolves. Yes, the package of picks the Wolves sent over was astronomical, and the Jazz got a decent cast of role players for Rudy, but the Cavs overpaid out the wazoo for the three-time All-Star.
it's not even close. The Jazz likely will not get anyone as good as Gobert from the Wolves trade. They already have one guy comparable to Mitchell making 60 million less and two years younger.
Not only did the Jazz get three picks and two swaps, but they also got more than half of a starting lineup. Lauri Markannen, Ochai Agbaji, and Collin Sexton will all be starters for the Jazz next year, and for several years. All of those players are 25 and below, and they are among the best new additions (https://thejnotes.com/2022/09/12/ranking-the-9-players-utah-traded-for-this-summer/) to the Jazz roster.
Ochai will start for the Stars anyway
Agbaji was the 14th overall pick and is the best rookie on the Jazz roster (https://thejnotes.com/2022/09/10/ranking-utah-jazz-rookies-2022-23-season/). He is a day one starter, as are Markannen and Sexton, who is a fringe All-Star. With their haul of picks, the Jazz should be able to find the next franchise icon in the coming seasons, maybe as soon as next season.
The Italian is the best rookie. Hard to imagine it otherwise. Fringe all stars! :facepalm
This is not to say that the Minnesota deal was bad, but come on. Yes, the Jazz got four picks, but are any of the players they added any good? Vanderbilt was a fringe starter last year who couldn’t average double-digit points, Walker Kessler would be really, really good…if this was 1980, and Malik Beasley, Talen Horton-Tucker, and Stanley Johnson were all conciliatory pieces. Don’t even get me started on Leandro Bolmaro, who might not even see the court.
Kessler might be the next Gobert? Bolmaro should be ahead of your starter until proven otherwise. More pro experience, bigger and younger. Just need to fix his shot

https://thejnotes.com/2022/09/13/4-possible-landing-spots-fpr-sharpshooter-bojan-bogdanovic/
The Utah Jazz (https://thejnotes.com/) seem set on clearing house, getting younger, and trading away any established players with any sort of value. They did it with Patrick Beverly, and appear to be getting ready to send Jordan Clarkson to a contender (https://thejnotes.com/2022/09/08/4-teams-show-interest-jazz-sixth-man-jordan-clarkson/). While Clarkson probably has the highest value of anyone on the roster, Bojan Bogdanovic (https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/bogdabo02.html) is also drawing some attention around the league.
Clarkson sucks. Glad I'm the only one that seems to think so!
With nearly every contending team wanting a piece of Bojan, the Jazz get to pick and chose who they trade with. Despite being 33 years old, Bojan is still in his prime and can provide meaningful minutes and efficient scoring as a secondary option, or he could come off the bench and average big numbers.
they get to take the best offer. Not much picking and choosing
Between OG Anunoby and Scottie Barnes, I don’t think Bojan would crack the starting five. That’s okay since Toronto would want him with the second unit anyway.
he should have been on the bench with the Jazz. It was one of their problems
This is the first trade I have ever proposed that results in the Jazz losing a pick. By 2025, the Wolves should still be quite good, so this pick will be in the back half of the first round. In return, the Jazz get a 23-year-old who averaged 18.3 points last year as the starting wing for Toronto.
doubt Danny is giving up a pick to get rid of an expiring contract
The Jazz end up with Crowder, who would be a one-year rental before he signs with another contender, and Dario Saric, who is 27 but coming off a torn ACL. This would be a gamble for both teams. On one hand, the Suns are giving up a key role player who can do a bit of everything for a pure scorer, and the Jazz are basically trading Bojan for Saric.
no
The Lakers get a backup point guard for Patrick Beverly who can shoot and a traditional wing. The Jazz get one year of a horrible contract, two solid picks, and a conciliatory second-rounder this year.
Conley backing up Beverley!:facepalm
Take your pick of a young player. I think it’s fair for Utah to get a young player for Bojan, and a supplemental pick for taking Fournier’s awful contract. Detroit will be a fringe lottery team next year, so that gives Utah a pick in the 10-15 range next season, bringing their total to five in the first round of 2023.
where do you come up with this shit. An expiring contract for 3 years of Fournier!

https://thejnotes.com/2022/09/14/staff-debate-gobert-trade-better-utah-jazz/
The fact that Danny Ainge and the rest of the Utah Jazz front office got the Minnesota Timberwolves to pony up as much as they did is highway robbery and will continue to benefit the team going forward. To be clear, the Utah Jazz got a great haul for Mitchell, but it seems that they may have turned down a better proposal from the New York Knicks to take the Cleveland Cavaliers’ offer.
The Mitchell trade was always going to be better. They likely won't get the 3rd best player in franchise history fro Gobert. I think they could end up with several players better than Mitchell or at least comparable out of that trade. Already have a couple
Is Collin Sexton better than RJ Barett in the long term? Maybe not, but he was the centerpiece of the Cavs’ offer, along with, of course, three unprotected future firsts and two pick swaps. Those are valuable assets. However, a team can really only use but so many picks (https://thejnotes.com/2022/09/09/espn-breaks-just-filthy-rich-utah-jazz-now/), and the Jazz got plenty from offloading Gobert.
they will use them all certainly! :facepalm
Gobert was also harder to move considering he makes $38 million next season, $8 million more than Mitchell, and he’s 30 whereas Mitchell’s 26. Finding a taker wasn’t a given, especially with how much they’d have to give up to match salaries, but Minnesota was apparently that desperate. I argue that the Mitchell trade was closer to fair value for a three-time All-Star, based on the Dejounte Murray trade from earlier this summer.
easier to move because he makes the Wolves one of the top teams in the league as he would for almost every franchise. That is the impact that the guy has. We saw it when he was surrounded by guys not even in the league anymore
Mitchell is better than Murray, and the Jazz received three additional assets as a result. Meanwhile, the Timberwolves hustled backward by overpaying for a player who had less future value. No one believes that Gobert’s best basketball is ahead of him, yet the value that the Jazz received for him seemed to indicate otherwise.
if the Spurs would have traded the Jazz Murray for Mitchell before Gobert was traded I'd have jumped on it! I'd take him any day. Playing both ends of the court is a thing! Gobert had his best year. He will peak soon. Hasn't happened yet though. Can't wait to see what he does on the most talented team he's been on by far. He won't have to get every rebound. If he leaves the rim he has another 7 footer there not O'Neale. Has a pg that will pass him the ball
Additionally, who gives up four future first-round picks, two pick swaps, and three valuable or potentially valuable players, anyway? Minnesota already had an All-Star center but acquired Gobert, which ensures that they’ll play an outdated two-big-man lineup for the next few seasons.
2 of the best. Not just any two bigs
I'm tired of hearing that jazz turned down a better deal. I remember reading before that the nicks were refusing to give up more than 2 picks in deal didn't want to give up rj Barrett and fact is they pretty much removed him when they signed Barrett to that exstention plus they are paying him twice as much as the jazz are paying Sexton to then throw in what the claim is that they supposedly turned down that kind of deal wouldn't have been possible without the jazz giving up more themselves thanks to that exstention which came before the Cleveland trade. These New York people are claiming they had better deal are just trying to escape criticism they are facing that they messed up. They don't have to prove anything. I sincerely doubt that there offer was that good especially after they signed Barrett to that exstention. There's no reason for Jazz to care about anything other than best deal. Would New York have made better offer sure they do have more picks but Charles Barkley reported he heard New York felt ainge was trying to rip them off demanding too much for Mitchell
Knicks, Jazz and Wolves win. Cavs lose even though they should be better this year. They have a ceiling. Small backcourt. A superstar that isn't really one

https://behindthebuckpass.com/2022/09/12/pros-cons-milwaukee-bucks-trading-jordan-clarkson/
can't imagine there are any pros. The cons are that he sucks!
It is also not controversial to say that the Bucks could use an upgrade at the backup point guard position after George Hill’s lackluster 2021-22 campaign. Although Clarkson is more of a combo guard and not a traditional point guard like Hill, he would fit the billing as an upgrade. Clarkson is capable of handling the basketball and putting plenty of points on the board off the bench, which would help the Bucks out tremendously.
Hill is a combo guard and a player. Clarkson sucks!
Furthermore, the Bucks would also likely have to give up George Hill and Grayson Allen to match Clarkson’s $13.3 million contract for next season. While trading Hill would be reasonable, Allen did just have the best season of his NBA career and has proven to be a perfect fit with the Bucks. Due to his strong play last season, some may be reluctant to include moving Allen, who was a full-time starter for the Bucks until the postseason. The addition of a first round pick in that proposal makes a trade even more questionable.
don't want either!
The difficult aspect of any Clarkson trade is trying to decipher an adequate trade package for both sides. The most logical offer would seemingly be Grayson Allen, George Hill, and possibly a second round pick or two, but it might not be that easy. If the Jazz do indeed want a first rounder, that may complicate things. The Bucks are also high on Allen, so they may be reluctant to move him. Could Jordan Nwora somehow fit into this situation? The forward is still a restricted free agent, and as the Jazz look to stock up on young talent, the 24-year-old could be viewed as a desirable piece in a sign-and-trade. However, that is just speculation. If the Bucks can get Clarkson without giving up the farm, they absolutely should pursue the opportunity.
not sure they need another 24 year old guard at this point!

Q. Danny Ainge said a couple of days ago, that part of his decision, ultimately, and part of the organization’s decision to rebuild and trade the group was that he saw a team that didn’t believe in each other. DO you agree with them? Donovan Mitchell: Not at all. That’s his assumption after being around for six months, it’s easy to look at things from the outside in and get your own perception on stuff. Despite what the media reports, especially about me and Rudy like this, to be honest, it’s obvious what everybody talks about, granted, we had some differences. But at the end of the day we were the number one pick-and-roll duo for a lot of last year, we were very efficient together on the floor. There was a lot of things that played into it that we just didn’t have success, you know? (…) I wouldn’t say this group didn’t believe each other. (…) I wouldn’t say that we didn’t believe in each other. I don’t think that’s fair after six months (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cavaliers-star-donovan-mitchell-plus-koby-altman-and/id1470466331?i=1000579560651).

Donovan Mitchell: When I got traded, you know, we spoke to obviously Koby (Altman), JB (Bickerstaff), everybody from the team. But you know, JB had told me they were going to Nashville, that next Monday, or whatever it was that Thursday, or Friday, or whatever it was. And I said, I’m there (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cavaliers-star-donovan-mitchell-plus-koby-altman-and/id1470466331?i=1000579560651).

New Cleveland Cavalier Donovan Mitchell says he’s super excited to be reunited with former Utah Jazz teammate Ricky Rubio (https://www.talkbasket.net/150483-donovan-mitchell-im-forever-grateful-for-ricky-rubio). (Via Cleveland Cavaliers): “He really helped me lock in on the little details as far as my work, as far as my craft, as far as the possession game. Just being able to watch him lead our team from the point guard position and allowing me to kinda take the reins as a young guy, which I didn’t even expect coming into the league and just kinda teaching me the little things throughout the game. I’m forever grateful for Ricky Rubio, and to be back here with him, he’s a little bit older now, but he’s still the lighthearted fun guy that I’ve always known. I’ve gone to Spain to see him and hung out with him. So to be back here with him is truly special.”

Stefan Bondy: There are different views about how the league views RJ Barrett. My understanding is the Jazz valued the contract that they got with Collin Sexton more than what they would’ve had to pay Barrett. (https://*********.com/lists/knicks-rumors-donovan-mitchell-rj-barrett-jalen-brunson-julius-randle-more/) That was an important part of the trade negotiations.

well duh. You got a guy that could be as good or better than Mitchell for 60 million less than Mitchell or Barrett makes and he's two years younger than Mitchell

Rudy Gobert is not leaving Berlin without a gold medal around his neck. “I’m here to win,” Gobert was straightforward, per Mozzart Sport. “The goal is a gold medal, and only that will satisfy me (https://basketnews.com/news-178021-rudy-gobert-the-goal-is-a-gold-medal-and-only-that-will-satisfy-me.html). “I will try to be even better in order to achieve that goal. I believe that this team has enough quality to be the best in Europe. We have to beat Poland and then one more. After that, I will be happy,” said the new Minnesota Timberwolves player.

He delivered when it mattered the most. In the Round of 16 and the quarterfinal stage, Gobert averaged 19.5 points, 15.5 rebounds, and 24.0 EFF. “We have to continue to do well and above all, to believe in ourselves. I have the impression that we are improving from game to game. We knew that as a young team we would make some mistakes. The beauty of it – we can learn a lot from all of this, and it can be seen that we are doing just that,” the French center pointed out (https://basketnews.com/news-178021-rudy-gobert-the-goal-is-a-gold-medal-and-only-that-will-satisfy-me.html).

Hornacek played for the Jazz from 1994-2000 and was an assistant from 2011-2013. After that, he was head coach of the Phoenix Suns (2013-2016) and New York Knicks (2016-2018) and an assistant with the Houston Rockets (2020-2022).
He was helping AK at least before he was an assistant if I remember correctly
much smaller staff than COTM I believe. Horny might be the guy to help Bolmaro, Butler etc. with their shot

Mitchell said the 8-second violation he committed toward the end of Game 1 of the Jazz’s 2020 playoff series against the Denver Nuggets still eats at him. The Jazz took Games 2, 3 and 4 before losing the next three games and the series, and he wonders what might have happened had they won Game 1.
should eat at you. Boneheaded!

“He’s really coming into his own,” Jazz CEO Danny Ainge said earlier this week (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0DstQ7DXk8&t=133s). “We’re seeing things in him, grabbing rebounds and going coast-to-coast with the dribble. Those are things you haven’t really seen out of Lauri yet, and so we’re excited about his future.”
he'll have the chance to showcase it this year at least until the trade deadline

This is Hornacek’s third stint in a coaching role with the Jazz after serving as a shooting advisor for Andrei Kirilenko in 2007 before being named an assistant coach on Tyrone Corbin’s staff between 2011-13.

Horny probably picked two of the worst teams at the time to coach with the Knicks and Suns, but definitely can't hurt to have a guy on staff who's done the top job when you've got a rookie head coach.

Bogey out for Lee and Olynyk from Detroit. They apparently wanted a vet C and to clear up the forward logjam. Guess they rate Lee somewhat too to take him in too. Surprised by no draft picks and adds another player to the roster, so another one to cut too.

good hire. He did a great job the first year with the Suns. Going to NY and agreeing to run the triangle certainly was not a good move

They needed a vet but they just signed Zeller. I'd rather have someone younger. Lee was dominating in 7 Gleague games so he might have a chance if he can get on the floor with Clarkson, Donley and Gay still around. Didn't want any long term money. Got a nice trade exception and under the tax
