The Jazz have a mixed bag. On the one hand, Lauri is crazy efficient on high volume. But most of those baskets are coming assisted. Clarkson is generating his own offense quite a bit but below league average efficiency. Nickeil & Collin are in the right area but on far too little volume.
Get rid of the bum. More Sexton, Nickeil and Beasley

This summer, the Utah Jazz traded him to Minnesota, which bet its future on Gobert’s ability to help the franchise win its first championship. The Timberwolves gave the Jazz four draft picks, four players and the right to swap picks in 2026. “The average fan might not understand what I bring to the table,” Gobert said, “but the G.M.s in the league do.” (https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/28/sports/basketball/rudy-gobert-minnesota-timberwolves.html)

What has it been like adjusting to playing with another center like Karl-Anthony Towns? I don’t really like to call him a center because I don’t think he’s a center. I think it’s more of a wing in a center’s body. But yeah, it’s been a fun process so far. (https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/28/sports/basketball/rudy-gobert-minnesota-timberwolves.html) Obviously, we knew there was going to be some ups and downs, and there is some ups and downs. But KAT has been a great teammate. He’s been a great human. People like to focus on the fact that it’s two big men that play together, but there is always a process of adjustment when a player like me joins another team. Building chemistry takes time.
– via Tania Ganguli @ New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/28/sports/basketball/rudy-gobert-minnesota-timberwolves.html)
A lot of people celebrate my failures. (https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/28/sports/basketball/rudy-gobert-minnesota-timberwolves.html) It’s kind of like a mark of respect for me just to have people that just wait until I do something wrong or until my teams start losing. Then they become really, really loud. And when my teams do well it’s quiet again. You know, I kind of embrace that it’s part of the external noise that comes with all the success that we’ve had in Utah and over the last few years in my career.
– via Tania Ganguli @ New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/28/sports/basketball/rudy-gobert-minnesota-timberwolves.html)
When did you first feel that people were celebrating your failures? Once I started to have success, when I started winning defensive player of the year, All-N.B.A., being an All-Star. When my team, when we started winning like 50 games and stuff. The people on social media are always the loudest. When I go outside, it’s usually all the interactions are positive (https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/28/sports/basketball/rudy-gobert-minnesota-timberwolves.html).
– via Tania Ganguli @ New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/28/sports/basketball/rudy-gobert-minnesota-timberwolves.html)
There was a lot of conversation about your relationship with Donovan Mitchell, at that time and afterward. How do you view how that relationship was? I think it was a tough situation for me, just like it was a tough situation for him. After that, we came back to have a lot of success as a team. As of today, Donovan is someone that I want to see him happy. I want to see him succeed. I want him and his family to be great. Things happen, and sometimes people can do things to you that can hurt you. (https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/28/sports/basketball/rudy-gobert-minnesota-timberwolves.html) A lot of times it’s out of fear, you know. So you just have to grow through that and see past that. You mentioned people will do things that hurt you. Do you mean Mitchell? I mean generally. That’s life.

Clarkson is a more willing shot-creator off the dribble than Markkanen, which is largely the reason he’s been the team’s top option in the fourth quarter.

In the final minute of the game the Jazz had their chance to take the lead with two consecutive trips to the foul line, but Olynyk and Clarkson shot 1/4 on those attempts and that was all she wrote. There is no doubt that the Jazz will wish they could take a mulligan on this fourth quarter, this was a winnable game that slipped away due to poor execution and ice-cold shooting.

Last week, Stockton joined Michele Tafoya’s podcast Sideline Sanity to preach his anti-vax narratives. During the interview, Tafoya referenced Stockton’s claim that more than 100 pro athletes died from the COVID vaccine and asked the Basketball Hall-of-Famer where that information came from. “I got it from a lot of places otherwise I would have never had the confidence to share it,” Stockton said without offering specific sources. “That’s the beauty of it. I have quite a system that I go through before I open my mouth, especially with statistics and I knew at the time that 150 was dramatically low.” (https://thecomeback.com/covid-19/john-stockton-thinks-1000-pro-athletes-died-covid-vaccine.html)
– via Brandon Contes @ The Comeback (https://thecomeback.com/covid-19/john-stockton-thinks-1000-pro-athletes-died-covid-vaccine.html)
Now nearly one year later, Stockton told Tafoya he’s confident he lowballed the number when he estimated 150 pro athletes died from the vaccine. “I thought it was in the area of 300. When I went and spoke at the Spokesman-Review, we had a nice interview, and they asked, and then of course whatever FactChecker.org or dot com came out and said ‘well that’s baloney.’ I went back and looked again, I have names, pictures, faces, where they played,” Stockton asserted on Tafoya’s podcast. “I had over 300 at the time, so I felt pretty secure with my little 150. People had to come out and argue that, I had the proof in my hands, the piece of paper with the names. And it’s way more than that now. I think it’s in the thousands now. Don’t quote me on that one, I’m not saying 1,000, but it might be. It’s a big number.” (https://thecomeback.com/covid-19/john-stockton-thinks-1000-pro-athletes-died-covid-vaccine.html)

Sitting at 11th is Dariq Whitehead, the 6’6” wing playing at Duke. He is an athletic wing player with an improving 3pt shot. He will still be 18 years old on draft night. Something that really stands out when watching him play is how smooth he is with the ball in his hands. If the Jazz stand pat and don’t try to move up further into the lottery, a player like Whitehead would be a great guy to take a shot on.

On the other end, the Jazz could hold look to trade everyone not named Lauri Markkanen, Walker Kessler, Ochai Agbagi, and Collin Sexton. They can see what kind of draft compensation they can build from veterans like Mike Conley, Kelly Olynyk, Malik Beasley, and Rudy Gay. They can increase their odds at a top pick and see if they hit on a generational young player.

The beginning of the Will Hardy era in Salt Lake has produced some of the purest basketball we’ve seen in years through elite three-point shooting, constant ball movement, and fast pace. Nonetheless, despite the team’s exciting start to the season, it’s still most likely that the Utah Jazz become huge sellers (http://hoopshabit.com/2022/11/11/utah-jazz-start-cost-wembamyama/) at the trade deadline. While this may certainly include veterans like Mike Conley, Malik Beasley, and even Jordan Clarkson (despite the extension rumors (https://www.sltrib.com/sports/jazz/2022/12/26/jordan-clarkson-utah-jazz-have/)), one of the often most under-looked players in the league, now a member of the Jazz, is Kelly Olynyk (https://www.nba.com/player/203482/kelly-olynyk).

And for the first time since coming back from his torn left ACL, Ingles looked like himself again on his way to 14 points, five rebounds and 10 assists in the Bucks’ 123-114 victory. “If we won and I played like s—, like I had in the first five games, I’d still be happy,” Ingles said. “But I was just talking to my wife in the ice bath and it’s like, I guess the nice part is the work that I did over the last 11 months, even playing with the Herd guys and different times along this, you’re not second guessing, but you’re like, ‘Have I done enough? Am I still going to be the same person? Can I still move the same out there? Like, I would have gone home very happy tonight if we won, especially after the last few games, but just to feel a bit more like myself, getting up the minutes a little more from what I’ve been able to play. The good news for Utah is that Lauri Markkanen is here to stay. Tonight he had another big night with 29 points on fantastic efficiency and he doesn’t appear to be slowing down, if anything, he’s just getting better. There’s just no way the Jazz don’t find a way to keep him on the team long-term. If he can do this on a team that wasn’t supposed to win a lot of games, what happens when you pair him with elite talent down the road?
he becomes the role player he's always been? Great players carry teams. We saw Gobert carry a lot less talent to wins

It’s danger time in Minnesota. The losses are piling up and so are the frustrations. This passion play has been at the local art house for the last two decades, and the foundation crumbles so much more easily when it has been blown up and rebuilt over and over again. Fingers start pointing and fabric is torn and the team is staring down the barrel of a potential disaster should they finish in the lottery and give their pick to Utah, where Walker Kessler has out-performed Gobert in some loud areas this season. “I think tonight was the first time I saw them frustrated with each other through a lot of different ins and outs of the lineup, tough losses on the road, but tonight I think it manifested itself in a different way,” Finch said. Howard Eisley was one of the league’s top young point guards playing behind Stockton in the late 90s. After turning down a multi-year deal to continue as Stockton’s backup, Eisley was traded to the Mavericks where he received a bigger role, but never developed into the upper-echelon starter Dallas hoped they were acquiring in the deal.
Eisley sucked as did most of Stockton's backups
Shandon Anderson suffered a similar fate. Anderson was a strong contributor in the Jazz’s runs to the Finals, but turned down a larger role with the Jazz for an opportunity to take a starting role with the Houston Rockets.
what larger role? Instead of him being their main focus in the off season as he should have been they were worried about Horny who was about done.
The Jazz chose to move on from Donovan Mitchell, recognizing their timeline was better served to hit the reset button, rather than trying to piecemeal a new supporting cast around him. And, even with the guard having a career year with the Cavaliers, it’s far too early to say the Jazz made a bad move.
I'll take Lauri and Sexton over the gunner anyday. Too bad they don't still have Gobert though

Nobody mentioned it, but an onslaught of COVID-19 illness and other injuries derailed the Jazz after the 28-10 peak mentioned above. They would never be whole again after early January, and it just killed the belief — again, even though the team was fighting for the No. 1 seed before the bad luck started.
and that is where the narrative that they had went as far as they could with this group. Stockton and Malone went up and down throughout their careers. New coach might have been all they needed. That was the obvious change that only happened because he left. tHE CURRENT TEAM SUCKS AT d AND REBOUNDING. iMAGINE IF THEY wOLVES TRADE HADN'T HAPPENED JUST THE cAVS(AND cLARKSON_

In short, it’s been a layup line. Against Sacramento the other night, Utah had it’s best success with a 3-big lineup of Lauri Markkanen, Kelly Olynyk, and Walker Kessler. In 11 minutes, that group only allowed 6 of 20 shots at the rim and still performed at an elite offensive level.
did they rebound? That's the biggest issue to me. You're playing bigger than everyone in the league and can't rebound

So, if you’re getting veteran mentorship, a reliable source of wisdom and all you have to give up for that is 12-15 minutes a night and a couple of bad shots, it’s a pretty good deal, especially when those minutes aren’t directly contributing to losing and when you look at what could hypothetically happen if you decided to go in another direction.
considering the money he makes through next season and that those minutes could go to others it sucks
“I think it’s time that Ochai finds some minutes,” Hardy said after the loss to the Kings. “He’s worked really, really hard and he’s done great with Scott (Morrison), our G League coach and their staff. He’s been down there getting minutes to learn how to be a pro and understand how he can help our team and we need his physicality, we need his athleticism, especially on the defensive end.”

As tempting as that might sound, however, it’s critical for Utah to stick to its plan. They just have to step into Phase 2. That means getting rid of the next tier of players on the roster like Rudy Gay and Malik Beasley. Some feel they may also consider shipping out Mike Conley Jr. and Jordan Clarkson, but we are not too sold on that.
Lauri looks like a guy to build around. You need to get rid of whomever doesn't fit around him starting with Clarkson and Gay ideally. They need to think of him as a 4/5 not a 3. They need to figure out which 2 or 3 bigs they're moving forward with. I'd think Kessler should be looked as the eventual starter and I'd say Vanderbilt off the bench with his great energy and D with Olynyk or Simone if you look to go smaller and younger. At some point they will have to decide between Conley and Sexton. I like Beasley and Nickeil but the latter certainly doesn't feel like he will be around past the off season. He should be playing. Best perimeter defender, one of the best playmakers, their biggest guard, play the 1 and 2 and he's hitting shots
We are not sure if Danny Ainge & Co. would agree, but the Jazz should be sellers and not buyers right now. If the Jazz do want to target anyone, it has to be a guy who fits into the team’s timeline. They still have room to grow, but they shouldn’t invest anything in a seasoned veteran moving forward. It should be a full-on youth movement right now in Utah.
depends on who they are selling and buying. Sounds like they want Collins. Looks like they want young vets on a decent 2nd contract like him, Lauri and Sexton. If they become a star like Lauri you have a bargain contract or you can use those contracts for something bigger or whatever. I'd be happy if Clarkson was gone but there's several guys now that won't be back next year so if you can trade them now why not? Bolmaro, Udoka, Nickeil, Simone, Talen...
The Jazz should explore a deal for Gay. This would free up some playing time for youngsters Simone Fontecchio and Ochai Agbaji. Any club out there that may be looking for a veteran shooter may want to stake a wager on Gay’s six seasons of above-average three-point shooting.
no one wants Gay unless they are getting back something else to make it worth their while
The Jazz may also think about dealing Gay for a younger player. Jaxson Hayes, for example (Pelicans), could be interesting. Although Hayes won’t turn 23 until after the season, his potential to develop into much more than his present form should make him quite appealing.
and what else do they want? Hayes probably wouldn't play. Could sit next to Udoka
The Jazz may even include Beasley in the aforementioned Hayes trade package. As an alternative, the Jazz may want to consider Miami’s Nikola Jovic or Boston’s Payton Pritchard.
Now Beasley actually should have a lot of value. He can play.

But the Pistons are asking for a first-round pick for teams eager to add the veteran shooter, and the Lakers are not the only suitor. At 22-years-old, and having played at a high-level college program like Kansas, Agbaji should be able to impact the game in more ways than he’s shown through the first half of his rookie season.
not necessarily. Has to be better with the Stars at least though. A lot better
The Jazz declined to pick up either player’s option next season, so if they hope to stick with the franchise, they’ll have to prove they’ve got more to offer over the next four months.
doubt either will be around. I like Bolmaro. Udoka showed he could play in the league last year
They need to choose one or the other because staying in the 10th seed in the West is arguably the worst option available.
not really. If you don't win the play-in you are a lottery team
He’s a knockdown shooter, a developing pick-and-roll finisher, and a long, willing defender. The Jazz may not have another long-term staple on the team as of today, but finding talent to fit around Markkanen should be easier than it was to build around Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell.
we'll see. The Jazz were good as soon as Gobert emerged. Jazz aren't very good right now
Clarkson will likely opt out of his contract this summer, meaning the Jazz have to weigh whether he’s more valuable as a trade asset, or as a player they’ll want to dedicate significant money to over the summer.
see ya! Be great not to have to pay him the 4th year!
The Jazz opened the year winning 10 of 13 games, eliminating any chance for a season-long tank that may have proven fruitful but would have been painful for fans to sit through.
they can still finish as one of the worst teams and it doesn't improve your odds that much anyway We'll know soon which direction they are heading

Tony Jones: The Jazz and Jordan Clarkson have been engaged in contract extension talks, according to league sources. No agreement has been reached, but there is mutual interest in moving forward. (https://*********.com/social/) The two sides have until April to come to an agreement. If no agreement is reached, Clarkson has the option to pick up his player option or head into unrestricted free agency. In unrestricted free agency, the Jazz have his bird rights.

Tony Jones: The key, according to sources, is the two sides have interest in continuing to talk and will continue to talk. The Jazz see Clarkson as someone who is playing at a high level and is still young enough to grow with the current rebuild. (https://*********.com/social/) The Jazz are limited in what they can currently offer because of league rules, but talks at this stage are still considered in the routine stage, according to sources.

As for Collins, the Hawks have long since known that he’d welcome a change of scenery. (https://theathletic.com/4067336/2023/01/09/john-collins-trade-rumors/?source=nbatw) But the factors that matter the most in deal-making may not currently be in his favor.

He’s begging for trade, and Brooklyn is like, ‘Nah.’ (https://theathletic.com/4067336/2023/01/09/john-collins-trade-rumors/?source=nbatw) Not saying that I’m Kevin Durant, but it’s just the mentality of ‘Yeah, you can say whatever, you can make a public scene, you can do whatever, (but it won’t matter).’”

I’ve had three coaches up to this point. So as I said, it’s sort of being calm in the business world of basketball, which is a lot. (https://theathletic.com/4067336/2023/01/09/john-collins-trade-rumors/?source=nbatw) There are ideas and thoughts, a lot of players’ hopes and dreams and careers, and just a lot of decision making going on that I can’t control happening in front of me. How’s that possible? What do you mean? I play basketball every day, you know what I mean? I come in and I play basketball, and whatever happens, happens because I don’t control that side. Your former teammate Donovan Mitchell returns as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers to play in Salt Lake City against the Jazz for the first time on Tuesday. What do you think about the return of your friend and old teammate? Jordan Clarkson: Donny is coming. That’s my guy man, always. Always show love to him. We talked a lot. He is a cool and down to Earth kid and he’s really starting to embrace that. He’s a real, real superstar, honestly. (https://andscape.com/features/jordan-clarkson-is-ready-for-the-return-of-donovan-mitchell-hes-a-real-real-superstar/) Seeing him go through all that so young is really crazy to me. I never had that experience. I saw Kobe, and LeBron, and them when they were older and understood a lot of things. And Donny’s kind of understanding it and really coming into his own as a man.
– via Marc J. Spears @ Andscape (https://andscape.com/features/jordan-clarkson-is-ready-for-the-return-of-donovan-mitchell-hes-a-real-real-superstar/)
The 2023 NBA All-Star Game is in Salt Lake City. Do you aspire to make your first NBA All-Star appearance in your home arena? Jordan Clarkson: I’m playing to that caliber, making plays, trying to help my team win. I ain’t never been one to chase awards and accolades or nothing. (https://andscape.com/features/jordan-clarkson-is-ready-for-the-return-of-donovan-mitchell-hes-a-real-real-superstar/) I just kind of let the game speak for itself. If it happens, it happens, but definitely going to have to keep winning more games. It’s not really on my mind. Not at all really. But I come out here, try to perform every night, give our team a chance to win. That’s all I’m really worried about.
– via Marc J. Spears @ Andscape (https://andscape.com/features/jordan-clarkson-is-ready-for-the-return-of-donovan-mitchell-hes-a-real-real-superstar/)
What did you learn from Kobe work ethic-wise and off the court? Jordan Clarkson: In those last two years when it was almost over and he made his farewell tour or whatever it was, he was still the first dude in the gym, weight room, and getting up shots. (https://andscape.com/features/jordan-clarkson-is-ready-for-the-return-of-donovan-mitchell-hes-a-real-real-superstar/) Sometimes he’d be like, ‘Man, were you at?’ He did a whole practice and a whole film session before we practiced. And then coming in there changing stuff on the film game plan. Just being around all that early [former Laker Julius Randle] could attest to that, [former Laker] D’Angelo [Russell] as well, that’s helped us in our career tremendously. He pushed us too.
– via Marc J. Spears @ Andscape (https://andscape.com/features/jordan-clarkson-is-ready-for-the-return-of-donovan-mitchell-hes-a-real-real-superstar/)
Jordan Clarkson: I think D-Lo got on a podcast and talked about a [Lakers game we had] in Portland. I think it was Dame [Lillard] and C.J. [McCollum] went crazy on us, and Kobe went off on a 30-, 40-minute rant on us. (https://andscape.com/features/jordan-clarkson-is-ready-for-the-return-of-donovan-mitchell-hes-a-real-real-superstar/) About us being young guys, and how those dudes were really taking control of what they got, and what they were doing. So, till this day all that stuff still stands for me.

After all these years of John Collins trade rumors, executives who have spoken to the Hawks about acquiring the veteran forward recently have indicated that the asking price has — understandably — declined significantly this time around. As I detailed in my recent conversation with Collins, the combination of his large contract and his declined production is hardly helpful in terms of his modern-day value. In some scenarios, the Hawks are merely asking for a quality player in return (and not a first-round pick), according to league sources (https://theathletic.com/4086123/2023/01/13/atlanta-hawks-trae-young-nate-mcmillan-power-structure/?source=user_shared_article).

After Utah’s early season success, league personnel is expecting the Jazz to reintroduce another seller into the trade deadline. Utah has received plenty of incoming calls on both Malik Beasley and Jarred Vanderbilt, sources told Yahoo Sports, with the Jazz’s perceived valuation of a first-round pick for each player. just stupid. If a 34% shooter wants to take 10 3's a game you let him!
NBA.com (http://NBA.com) defines “very tight” shots as shot attempts with a defender 0-2 feet away from the shooter. Jordan Clarkson’s greatest NBA attribute is his lack of fear of any shot, so it’s no surprise that he ranks fourth in the NBA in “very tight” three-point attempts, behind only CJ McCollum, Stephen Curry, and Anfernee Simons. Logically, the more threes you take with a defender close to you, the more often you’ll get fouled on said three-point attempts. Clarkson gets some of these fouls because his defenders are right on top of him, and he decides to shoot anyway.

It makes sense that Utah would want a 1st round pick in the deal. Something like Vanderbilt for Collins straight across would make sense, but Beasley, if he’s getting this kind of attention from other teams, warrants a nice 1st round pick to make this equal on both sides.
the pick is more for taking on 3 years of Collins contract I'd think

Walker Kessler remains one of the biggest steals in the Rudy Gobert trade. Added as a throw-in, Kessler is doing a really good job of replacing the former Jazz center. In the first half alone, Kessler had 5 blocks and 7 total for the game. He also grabbed 13 points, and 9 rebounds, including an enormous rebound after Collin Sexton missed 2 big free throws at the end of the game to seal it. Kessler looks like a future DPOY at center and has soft hands and touch around the rim. He also looks like a dominant rebounder and could be a force for the Jazz for years to come. Every time you think he’s about to hit a rookie wall, he gets better.
I doubt they considered a 1st rounder a throw in. Besides the unprotected 1sts I's say he was the key to the trade. The other guys were salaries to match
Finally, the Jazz don’t win this without Collin Sexton, who had a great night. Sexton was 7/12 from the field and 2⁄3 from three, with a monster shot at the end of the game to put this one away. Sexton has flaws, often getting tunnel vision on offense, but he brings a lot to the table with his intensity. Whatever game it is, whatever night, you know that Sexton will bring 110% energy, and those are the types of guys you want on the floor when things go bad.
type of guys you should want on your team but the Jazz have never seemed to think so

The Utah Jazz announced Saturday that they have entered into a long-term naming rights deal with Delta Air Lines, the Atlanta-based airline with a hub at Salt Lake City International Airport. (https://www.sltrib.com/sports/jazz/2023/01/14/delta-center-is-back-utah-jazz/) The arena will continue to be referred to as Vivint Arena until July 1, 2023, when the changeover will officially take place.
– via Salt Lake Tribune (https://www.sltrib.com/sports/jazz/2023/01/14/delta-center-is-back-utah-jazz/)
Terms of the deal were not released, but Jazz owner Ryan Smith told The Salt Lake Tribune that the intention is to keep the Delta Center name for decades to come. (https://www.sltrib.com/sports/jazz/2023/01/14/delta-center-is-back-utah-jazz/) This week, the Tribune reported that Delta had signed a lease extension with Salt Lake City to keep the company in Utah through at least mid-2044, with an option for another 10 years beyond that.
– via Salt Lake Tribune (https://www.sltrib.com/sports/jazz/2023/01/14/delta-center-is-back-utah-jazz/)
\
Vivint Smart Home purchased the naming rights to the stadium for 10 years in 2015. (In 2020, the “Smart Home” part of the arena name was dropped.) Vivint’s deal was not set to expire until 2025. However, concurrently with the Delta arrangement, Vivint agreed to a new sponsorship agreement with the Smith Entertainment Group, the company that owns the Jazz and the arena. Under the renegotiated deal, which extends through the 2030 season, Vivint will retain the rights to its courtside suite, along with in-game promotions, advertising packages, and digital ads placed on the court during the team’s TV broadcasts (https://www.sltrib.com/sports/jazz/2023/01/14/delta-center-is-back-utah-jazz/).

And maybe that will be the case. I’ve heard the Lakers and Pistons have discussed a deal that would include both Bogdanović and Nerlens Noel. (https://www.si.com/nba/2023/01/13/nba-trade-deadline-teams-to-watch-lakers-wizards-jazz-raptors) Since the Pistons are demanding draft assets in any deal for Bogdanović, it’s sort of a given that the Lakers would have to surrender a first-round pick to make a deal. Maybe they make a second deal to fortify the rotation further. Will they be willing to trade both picks that are currently trade-eligible? The sense around the league is they won’t. But we’ll see.

Jordan Clarkson, Kelly Olynyk, Talen Horton-Tucker, Rudy Gay, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker would each satisfy the league requirements to complete the trade.
In return for a player of Russell’s production, Minnesota would likely be asking for Clarkson to help their playoff hopes.
Last week, NBA Insider Marc Stein reported that Clarkson had “rebuffed” the Jazz extension offers amid a career year with the franchise.
The Jazz are limited on the size of extension they can offer Clarkson during this season, and risk losing the high-scoring guard in unrestricted free agency when it opens in July.
With Russell, the Jazz would get a $31 million expiring contract, and get out from underneath the $24 million Conley is owed next season, over $14 million of which is guaranteed.
Danny Ainge, Justin Zanik, and Will Hardy could also use the final three months of the NBA season to see how the 26-year-old Russell fits with the current roster, and if he would be a suitable long-term option to pursue this summer.
hate to see Gobert stuck with the bum again but Conley and him certainly make sense. Russell is close to Lauri's age. Works with Gay instead of Clarkson

The game ball for the Jazz in this game has to go to Walker Kessler. All five Jazz starters scored in double figures, so everyone played well, but Kessler posted his first 20/20 game and his impact on the court was undeniable. Not to disrespect Rudy Gobert, but the fact that the Jazz may have received someone who can be almost as impactful on the defensive end and a little bit more impactful on the offensive end in their trade with Minnesota last summer may just be the steal of the century. Utah also got double figure games off the bench from Ochai Agbaji and Collin Sexton, who shined in in his return from injury.
Jazz have one of the worst D's in the league which was never the case with Gobert. Let's not get ahead of ourselves

Speaking of the Rudy Gobert trade, Walker Kessler! In a redraft, he almost certainly goes in the top 6-8. And if this media survey had been after Kessler became the first rookie since 2014 to put up a 20/20 game, then he may very well have been #1 from this question.
probably not. Being a top rookie now doesn't mean you have more potential than others
“Who could we hire that could possibly be better than Quin Snyder?” That was a common thought when some were asking for a coaching change after a few years of postseason failures. And especially once Coach Q decided to step away. I’m not saying that Will Hardy is already a better head coach than Quin Snyder. But what I am saying is that the change brought a breath of fresh air to the Jazz and it’s very clear he is extremely good at his job. I hope he has a very long coaching career right here in Salt Lake.

The Hawks are trying to trade forward John Collins, but there’s one big obstacle — opposing teams don’t view his contract as having positive value, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN (video link). “John Collins has been at the center of their trade talks,” Wojnarowski said on NBA Countdown. “… Starting next year, (he’s) still owed another $25 million a year, essentially $75 million over the next three years. I think that’s been a hindrance in the trade market. Kessler has been on a fast rise from a player mostly seen as a throw-in addition to a major trade to one who's now perceived as a building block for a franchise. As he's strung some good-to-great performances together, it's been easy to forget he's still a rookie; however, Irving took advantage of some of the inexperience.

Utah has been rumored for months to be open to moving veteran Mike Conley, Jordan Clarkson, Malik Beasley, Rudy Gay and Kelly Olynyk. All five of those players have contracts that could expire following the season. Clarkson and Gay both have player options, the Jazz have a team option for Beasley, while Conley and Olynyk are both partially guaranteed for next season.
Gay is picking up his option. Partial guarantee doesn't expire at end of this season :facepalm

Having the difficult situation in mind, coach Pablo Prigioni is also working on bringing in another reinforcement, Leandro Bolmaro. According to Basquet Plus, Prigioni contacted the Utah Jazz to make the formal request for releasing Bolmaro for the mentioned games. (https://basketnews.com/news-184168-facundo-campazzo-expected-to-play-for-argentina-in-februarys-fiba-window.html) The 22-year-old swingman averages just 0.5 points in 11 NBA duels this season and spends most of the time on the Utah bench. He has also played five games in the G League where registered 13.0 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 6.6 assists.

Thabo Sefolosha played his last game in the NBA almost three years ago on March 8th, 2020. The player is now returning to the court (https://basketnews.com/news-184359-thabo-sefolosha-signs-with-a-team-in-switzerland.html). The 38-year-old veteran should sign a contract with a club from his home country of Switzerland. Currently 2nd in the Swiss League’s standings, Vevey Riviera Basket will have a new reinforcement on their roster, Jeremy Santallo from La Matin writes.

Among replies to the tweet, mostly from Jazz fans, this one stuck out: “Kessler. Defense seems to have a comparable ceiling but Kessler’s offensive game will far surpass Rudy’s.”
a generational defender and one of the most impactful offensive players. Good luck with that!
Part of the Kessler story is that he is not burdened by expectations and there’s no reason to heap those on him now. But there’s little doubt that Kessler will be among the league’s top rim protectors for years to come.
plenty of doubt. Let's see how hard he works
Eventually, the big test for Kessler will be the postseason. Will he encounter similar issues in the Western Conference playoffs that plagued Gobert for years? Will he be able to guard on the perimeter against the likes of Steph Curry, Luka Doncic and Ja Morant?
will he get the help Gobert didn't? We've yet to see him guard in space like Gobert could
The Jazz couldn’t go small in the past in part because the team was built around Gobert. Taking your highly-paid centerpiece off the floor in high-stakes moments isn’t a good look. With Kessler on a rookie contract, the Jazz shouldn’t have that problem.
you mean small with a couple 6 footers and a 6'4 PF? :lol

What happens is that the Jazz will all of a sudden just stop moving. They’ll push the ball up the court and then someone will end up with the ball on the wing (usually Jordan Clarkson, Collin Sexton, Malik Beasley) and they will either hold the ball or dribble way too much and for way too long without anything else happening around them.
Clarkson pounding his dribble too long? No!

Suffice to say these consensus picks, while informative on where these prospects rank at the moment, don’t help us out in predicting who the Jazz may actually take. Considering a strength of Utah’s roster going forward is in its bigger forwards and centers (Lauri Markkanen, Walker Kessler, Jarred Vanderbilt) it’s unlikely the Jazz will load up on more size. The first-round picks will probably be used to add versatility on the wing and ball-handling.
Ainge will take the best players. If he thinks they have more upside than Kessler or Lauri they will be gone. You trade a statue anyone is fodder

As currently constituted, the Jazz also will have too many players for the roster: 11 players with guaranteed money, Malik with a team option, and intent to resign Clarkson in free agency. And Utah could prospectively be adding 3 rookies?
depends on the rookies? Certainly makes more sense than signing the bum. Let's see what things look like after the deadline maybe?
His size and defensive limitations next to a trio of guars in Conley, Sexton, and Clarkson have been poor. Despite his prolific shooting from deep, he’s boasting a true shooting percentage 3.9 points below league average.
again 30 year old bum or 25 year old Beasley? Easy choice
Such a deal frees money up next year, lands the Jazz a player in Grayson Allen who’s already 80-90% of Malik, a promising rooking in Beauchamp, and a future pick. That would be a home run of a deal for Utah.

Would an Olynyk reunion interest the Celtics? Unlike some of the other players on this list, he’s not on an expiring contract, but only $3 million of his deal is guaranteed for the 2023-24 season. Based on my calculations, a package of Gallinari, Griffin and Jackson would fall just shy of reaching the NBA trade limit for matching Olynyk’s salary, so the Celtics would need to add further money to the offer. (https://theathletic.com/4140833/2023/01/31/celtics-nba-trade-deadline-targets/) That could be a deal breaker for Boston, which would then need to include Payton Pritchard, Sam Hauser or Kornet in the swap.

Young isn’t going anywhere. The same goes for Murray. Collins is the most likely one on the way out, of course, and it’s worth repeating that the asking price is known to have decreased significantly from recent years (https://theathletic.com/4145568/2023/02/01/nba-trade-deadline-hawks-grizzlies-mvp-race/) (per league sources, there is a focus on landing a quality player, or players, in return but no mandate for a first-round pick). That development is clearly a reflection of the focus on salvaging this season, as opposed to recouping the vast assets lost in the Murray trade with San Antonio in the summer. As we’ve reported recently, the Jazz and Rockets are known to be among the teams in pursuit.

guess that is it. Assume Westbrook is bought out. Gives them two roster spots plus Toscano, Bolmaro and Udoka on expiring contracts if they like someone else out there. Jones has a player option so he'll get a look. Makes even more sense to let Udoka go. Easily 5 spots. A seasoned veteran pg would be nice to help Sexton and Horton Tucker their development. Frank Jackson has looked good with the Stars. 10 days? Without Conley their won't be much winning but lots of ping pong balls
