Malone said come opening night at Utah, Murray “should be good to go.” (https://*********.com/social/) Sounded like in limited minutes.

https://www.si.com/nba/jazz/news/jazz-game-minutes-prediction-2022-23-lauri-markkanen#gid=ci02ae0a8140002635&pid=mike-conley-25-30-minutes-per-game
Starting Beasley would place Clarkson in his familiar role as the sixth man and provide the Jazz with instant offense from the bench.
I think they want to separate Clarkson and Sexton like they had to with Mitchell
Analysis: He will provide leadership and experience based on his tenure in the league, and Coach Hardy will lean on his floor-general abilities. As the season progresses, expect Conley's minutes to decrease due to age and the emergence of newer and younger players adapting to Utah's system.
His minutes will decrease cuz he's on a better team hopefully. He's easily their best player still
Jordan Clarkson: 32-35 minutes per game.
be hard to win any games with him starting and playing big minutes. Ugly way to tank!
Analysis: The Jazz will need 'TBG' (The Bucket Getter) on full display every night, guiding the Jazz and keeping his stock rising across the league. The NBA is a business, and Clarkson could yield additional dividends in a trade. Early on, expect him to play all the minutes he can handle, whether as a starter or reserve.
I can only see his stock going down. He's awful!
Foul trouble may stymie some game minutes as Markannen will be tested as a small forward in this NBA. Notable small forwards Markanen will face are LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Jason Tatum, Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, and Khris Middleton. As long as Markkanen can avoid foul trouble, the minutes will be plentiful, and Jazz Nation could witness him receiving the Most Improved Player award.
might be on another team when he gets the award
Analysis: Olynyk boasts a legitimate skill set and will demand minutes as a rebounder, passer, and as a shooter who can stretch the floor. Foul issues may also hinder his minutes, but Markkanen can play his position. Olynyk has a respectable NBA resume so expect a sold 30 minutes on a nightly basis.
rebounder? He's got a high IQ. Smart player
Although Coach Hardy will welcome Vanderbilt's upside, his downside is easily replaceable. Even Vanderbilt's upside can be challenged by Markkanen, Olynyk, and newcomer Walker Kessler.
none of them do what he does. Despite playing big he's probably the only great rebounder on the team. Kessler might make a defensive impact that is comparable
Look for Sexton, Kessler, and Gay to begin the season by logging 20-25 minutes per game, with additional minutes being distributed to Alexander-Walker. Again, the game script could alter the predicted allotment of minutes.
Beasley? Udoka will play once he's able.

That's when it hit Clarkson: He had to initiate the offense.
That was different.
looks exactly the same to me. Clarkson pounding the ball while everyone stands around watching. He pulls up for a horrible shot. Brick
"He's making extra passes for guys, doing things that I don't think he's really had to do throughout his career," Conley said. "You'd just go out there and say, 'JC, go score, go score, go score.'' And now it's like, 'Hey, we got a lot of guys that can do that. We need more ball movement', and he goes out there and he does it."
he could have always done those things instead he dribbles and bricks

At its essence, owner Ryan Smith and his team of executives broke up a virtual guaranteed playoff team, albeit one that never advanced beyond the second round, by trading All-Stars Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell. In return, the organization acquired financial flexibility and a host of draft picks stretching out over the next several years.
barely made the playoff last year
In Hardy's case, he will have ample time over the coming seasons to prove his merit. Much like during the Quin Snyder era, the roster's lack of talent will dictate looking beyond the team's record to make a legitimate assessment on Hardy's ability to coach.
Gobert can play. Not sure COTM can coach though
Except in rare instances, usually involving future Hall of Fame players, youth doesn't win in the NBA. It's easy to understand Hardy's choice to go with veterans, but the decision may not be in the organization's best interests.
got to play them to trade them
From a competitive standpoint, Hardy also must guard against doling out undeserved playing time for the sake of developing young players. He needs to set the standard that all minutes are earned without any entitlement.
and that appears to be the case so far. Luckily Hardy played at a small school and they likely won't have anyone from his alma mater to get playing time just because like Hood and Grayson did

Smith made it very clear that no matter what Utah's new broadcasting deal ends up being, there will be more streaming options for fans of his team. Smith's looking to create a better experience for those that are watching at home — something he said team CEO Danny Ainge, who doesn't travel with the team, reminds him often as Ainge watches games from home.

"I think it's an exciting time to be a Jazz fan," Smith said Tuesday. "I really do. … We've got a group of players who are hungry. There's an energy, there's an excitement, there's exciting players. We're young, but we also have a group of veterans, which is kind of unique. And I think we've got one of the most exciting young coaches in the league.
Clarkson is starting. Anything but exciting
"Let's just be honest, we're a team and a city that has got to build through the draft," Smith said. "We have to. You look at Donovan (Mitchell), you look at Rudy (Gobert), look who we drafted, that's where we've basically created these people that our fan base loves."

Although the Jazz front office has not commented on this specifically, but a big reason why certain teams are in a rebuild is because of 2023 NBA Draft prospect Victor Wembanyama from France (https://kslsports.com/491326/who-is-victor-wembanyama-and-why-do-the-utah-jazz-want-to-draft-him/). The 7’4 big man is projected to be a generational talent in the NBA. Wembanyama and his Paris-based (https://kslsports.com/493771/french-star-victor-wembanyama-set-for-his-first-taste-of-nba-life/) team faced the G League Ignite in a pair of exhibition games in the United States earlier this month. Ainge hasn’t had a chance to see Wembanyama in person, yet.

If the Jazz go under 23 wins, they will need to get absolutely crushed during the first three months of the season while they still play their best veteran talent like Mike Conley and Kelly Olynyk. The incredibly difficult first segment of Utah’s season might oblige that.
you do realize Clarkson is starting for the Jazz? Hard to imagine them winning many games with him starting

Having all their main rotation guys available is the ideal situation if the Jazz are looking to win the game, but it will also keep the Jazz from being able to play some of the young players they received in their blockbuster trades. Players like Walker Kessler and Ochai Agbaji need a chance to get on the floor. What’s the most likely scenario? The Jazz are probably going to allow Will Hardy to coach like he’s competing for the playoffs. If anything, this season is as much a chance for Hardy to develop as a coach as it is for the players. After a third of the season, if the losses have racked up, the Jazz will likely move some of the veterans to make sure the younger players get more minutes.
and there is the Stars until the vets are moved.

be hard to take Kessler out of the rotation when Udoka is ready. Olynyk will have to go soon.
Sexton is better than Mitchell. Faster, better shooter, better finisher, gets after it on D...
Clarkson still sucks. At least Hardy benched him down the stretch.
Gay might make himself tradable?
Great to see everyone playing D for a change. Sharing the ball. Pushing it...

Now, Vanderbilt did foul out of the game midway through the fourth quarter and his foul trouble kept him off the court more than Hardy probably would have liked. But that kind of energy was infectious and led to some great play from rookie Walker Kessler.

So, are the Jazz good? They looked pretty good last night. But what does that mean for them going forward? Much has been discussed lately about tanking, but watching this team play, they are just built too well to be a tanking team. They probably aren’t a playoff team, but then again, who really knows at this point? If certain guys take some strides and play like they did last night, they could absolutely squeeze into the play-in game, which in my opinion would be so much fun. I understand the tanking sentiment, but looking at the odds it just doesn’t look promising enough to throw a whole season away and the “winning culture” that has been talked about recently. The Jazz now have the draft capital and plenty of young prospects to pull off something crazy if they wanted to try and make a run at the #1 pick even without tanking. But then again, whoever ends up with that #1 pick probably isn’t trading it. Bottom line, this Jazz team came out on fire last night, and it was awesome to watch, and gives us hope that this season can be fun to get behind this new-look bunch. It’s crazy how refreshing it felt watching this team play last night. A new sense of pace. A new sense of determination, goals, and aspirations. Are they playing for a championship? Probably not. But these guys played hard, played as a team, and played to win. And the vibes?? They were immaculate.
as they trade vets it will look different. They literally have no one to replace Conley though getting rid of Clarkson would make you better.

Really liking the Vanderbilt and Kessler combo at the 5. Vanderbilt is getting in early foul trouble which he needs to clean up, but defensively they're both holding their own and grabbing the boards too.
Markkanen is interesting too. Obviously has a ton of talent and playing well early, so I wonder if he's one they'll look to flip for more picks given he's on a decent deal. Getting 03/04 vibes from this team, play their asses off and can sneak up on teams who may not expect it.

Some of the stuff that the T-Wolves are going to have to work through is going to include learning not to over-help. This was an issue that Conley had a lot in his first year with the Jazz. Trusting that Gobert can clean up if someone gets by an outer defender is not an easy habit to make and can often lead to unnecessary fouls. And it’s made more difficult for a team like the Timberwolves because they aren’t getting a lot of defensive aggressiveness from their perimeter players. Sound familiar?
Edwards is talking up a big game at the defensive end like Mitchell

For the Jazz we’re starting to see some players shine. Speaking of Lauri Markkanen, he continues to impress. Tonight he was 10/23 from the field for 24 points. He hit just 2/10 from three so he might have had an even bigger night had his 3-ball been falling. He also grabbed 13 rebounds and dished out 5 assists. Markannen is starting to really flourish and it looks like his excellent play in Eurobasket is carrying over. Can he continue this level of play? If he can, the Jazz may be looking at a much different season than we expected.
might have had a bigger game if he hadn't settled for 3's
Jarred Vanderbilt is starting to make a case for the NBA All-DefensiveTeam. Vanderbilt was all over the place tonight on the defensive end. Whether it was clogging lanes and getting steals (4), or having a knack for being in the right place at the right time (13 rebounds), he looks like a modern version of Dennis Rodman with his intense energy and defense. Oh and this was all in 24 minutes. That is going to be one of the big things for Vanderbilt to improve on is his ability to stay out of foul trouble. He fouled out of the Jazz’s first game and ended this one with 5. The more he can stay on the floor, the more he will impact the game. That will be hard because Vanderbilt plays with incredible energy and intensity and is constantly flying around. Perhaps if he gains a bigger reputation, the officials won’t be so ticky-tack with their calls.
unless he improves offensively you're not going to want him for big minutes. High energy role player
Finally, the other difference maker for this team is Mike Conley. He led the team in plus-minus and it’s not surprising. He’s had a great start to the season and is managing the game at an elite level. Tonight he ended the game with 11 assists. His presence on the floor makes everyone better and as long as he’s on the Jazz, expect them to have an impressive offense. Right now, they’re ranked #3 in the NBA and you can attribute a lot of that to Mike Conley.
without him they will not be good. No one else can run the O

Clarkson clapped it up. He screamed “yeeeeahhhhhhh,” letting Gobert know in zero uncertain terms what was at stake with the two foul shots. The eye contact between the two was unmistakable. Gobert let loose a wry grin. He missed both. The Jazz went on to win 132-126 in a game they had no business winning on paper. For the Pelicans, the return of Zion Williamson has made them look like a sleeping giant. Williamson adds a dynamic element to their offense that will make stopping them really difficult. When you combine Williamson with the emergence of Herb Jones, this Pelicans team deserves contender status. Brandon Ingram is also playing at another level to start the season. In the Pelicans’ last two games, Ingram is averaging 28 PPG while shooting 54% from the field and 60% from three. Those numbers aren’t sustainable, but there’s it’s clear he is becoming one of the premier small forwards in the league.
Zion has been a horrible defender in the past. Let's not get carried away yet
There have been a few outliers for this Jazz team that have helped them win their last two games. In their overtime win of the Wolves, Olynyk finished the game shooting 5/6 from three which won’t likely continue all season. They also got a 4/6 3-pt shooting night from Rudy Gay in their win over the Nuggets. Maybe that will be the story of the season for this Jazz team where they see certain players have big nights or maybe those are numbers that make the record a little deceptive. A win against the Pelicans would mean the Jazz need to be taken a little more seriously.
would mean Ainge and Zanik have a lot of work to do

At one point it looked like Cleveland’s home opener was going to be a celebration — 19,432 rowdy fans clad in white waiving towels. Perhaps even a Mitchell coronation — the new king of Cleveland basketball. “It felt like a playoff game. That was nuts,” Mitchell said of the energy inside Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. “Then we had the intro, that was crazy. There were just segments throughout the game where I caught myself smiling a few times. (https://www.cleveland.com/cavs/2022/10/donovan-mitchell-laments-disaster-of-fourth-quarter-apologizes-for-late-game-turnovers-despite-another-historic-night.html) I’m trying to lock in, but I’m just looking around like, ‘Holy s—.’ The crowd’s electric. I heard about it. I’ve played here, but I don’t think I ever heard it like that. Actually, I came to a Finals game in ‘16 and that’s when I heard it like that. But to be on this side of it and to hear the crowd just going nuts, it’s incredible.”

Or what about Markkanen looking like Kevin Durant on his way to a 20-point half? Or Jordan Clarkson morphing into not just a capable facilitator, but a darn good one? Or an errant pass that looked to be a sure turnover turning into Clarkson's game-tying 3-pointer in the final minute of regulation.

why was Clarkson still in the game then?
Yes, the Jazz ended up crushing the Nuggets in the season opener, but Denver could have easily coasted to blowout victory after taking a 17 point second quarter lead. Tip your hat to the Jazz for the comeback, but don’t bet on that happening often.

Jordan Clarkson had more assists than points at halftime.
that's what happens when you can't shoot
On Monday the Jazz will play their first back-to-back game. They’ll be on the road in Houston to finally play a game they are actually favored to win. The Jazz are a one-point favorite against the Rockets. The way things are going right now, it seems like the Jazz should be favored a bit more than that against a Rockets team that’s 0-3 on the season, but I’m not one of the oddsmakers.
back to back. First loss of many to come
If you’re a Jazz fan, you have to be having fun right now.
but is Danny having fun is the question? I'd be good with this team if it wasn't for the shit show that is Clarkson
On top of hitting the game-tying shot that sent this one into overtime and some other big shots in the extra period, Clarkson made one of the best defensive plays of the game. Trailing a full-steam-ahead Zion Williamson, Clarkson went up for a block that sent Williamson to the ground and it was a powerful and clean, all-ball block.
no mention of Clarkson taking a bad shot and it getting blocked led to his block though

Udoka?/Potter/Bolden

Bolmaro?/Juang
Agbaji/Fletcher

I'd guess Udoka might spend some time there for conditioning and I'm not sure where he plays otherwise right now.
Bolden is returning. He's pretty good. Bolmaro put up big numbers in a few games in the Gleague last year so I'm not sure he'll spend much time there either? Agbaji should be getting big minutes and touches though. Got a few NBA guys so I'd think they should be pretty good this year?

Jordan Clarkson lost the ball out of bounds with 26.8 seconds left in regulation, which set the stage for a new result for the 2022-23 Utah Jazz: a loss.
The Utah Jazz are unbeaten no more, falling to the Houston Rockets 114-108 Monday at Toyota Center.
"It's a long season," said Clarkson, who scored 17 points to lead the Jazz, but was 0-of-3 in the final two minutes. "We weren't going to go 82-0. Sooner or later we were going to take a loss. I think we all handled it well."
I told you he'd lose a lot of games for them.
"It's hard to win in the NBA with 20 turnovers," Hardy said. "There were times where we played a little bit fast. There were times where our spacing got a little bit clunky, especially in the first half. I thought in the second half our guys responded and came out with a different energy and a different physicality."
turnovers have been an issue which it probably will continue to be with all their passing plus Clarkson
During the surprising start to the season, Hardy applauded his team for finding new ways to win. And they almost found another one on Monday: Simone Fontecchio.

earlier in the day he was an all-star. Like I said I'd go more on the rest of his career than 3 games. He might have his best year but I'm not sure he's the star some seem to think
Markkanen’s struggles left the Jazz without a clear offensive identity and may be the first telltale of the team’s weaknesses this season.
Clarkson was the 1st sign. I'd be happy with this squad win or lose if they got rid of that shit show
Hardy has yet to close the game with the same five players on the floor this season, including Simone Fontecchio (https://kslsports.com/494600/utah-jazz-simone-fontecchio-first-nba-points-threes-houston-rockets/) and Nickeil Alexander-Walker each recording crucial minutes down the stretch in Houston.

The Utah Jazz, Cleveland Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves are all only three games into new chapters in their franchises after the Jazz swung blockbuster trades to send Donovan Mitchell to Cleveland and Rudy Gobert to Minnesota in the summer, but it’s fair to say all three teams are “winning” the deals right now, a sign of a good trade.

So was everybody wrong about the new-look Jazz? Maybe. Or maybe it’s just really early on in the process. It’s easy to find examples of early-season overperformers. The 2020-21 Magic started 4-0 (and 6-2) before eventually settling into the league’s third-worst record at 21-51, and that same season’s Cavs started 3-0 on their way to a 22-win season. The 2019-20 Timberwolves were 3-0 before a third-worst finish. The 2017-18 Grizzlies finished second worst even after starts of 3-0 and 5-1. The 19-63 Timberwolves of the 2013-14 campaign also started out 3-0.
Jazz will join this sad list in the end. Ainge will make sure of it
Case in point: when the Lakers came out of a late timeout down 1 on Sunday, most people assumed LeBron James would take the final shot. Hell, even on the Pels’ final offensive possession against the Jazz, Utah’s broadcasters joked that the play was obviously drawn up for CJ McCollum. (It was.) Conversely, how many people inside Smoothie King Arena figured the decisive play would be Kelly Olynyk rumbling in on an iso from the top of the key? The Jazz are winning right now precisely because they’re completely unpredictable. At some point, opponents will have a better idea who and what the Jazz are, and they’ll be better prepared to deal with some of the chaos Hardy’s team is introducing.
hopefully Hardy will continue to be flexible and not fall into 3 years of no adjustments like COTM
Good old-fashioned regression. There’s a solid chance top scorer Lauri Markkanen isn’t going to average 24.0 points per game, or that Olynyk won’t shoot 75% from deep forever, or that Mike Conley Jr. isn’t going to play 35 minutes per game all season. There are always a lot of mirages in early-season sample sizes, and some stuff will catch up to the Jazz.
didn't really expect Conley to play back to backs. Hopefully they can keep him healthy until he's traded
Same goes for some team-wide trends, like how Utah is currently holding teams to just 83.5 points per 100 halfcourt possessions despite having very little paint protection. It will be somewhat shocking if that number is anywhere near that level in another week or two.
Kessler isn't Rudy but he's good
For that matter, can they even sustain their frenetic style over 82 games — or even over this early 5-games-in-7-nights stretch? Right now the team is succeeding by playing with the pedal to the metal, and that’s a hard thing to do for 48 minutes multiplied by 82 games, especially when you remember that three of their top four minute-getters are 30 or older.
use their depth
Counterpoint: screw it, this is fun. However long this continues, this is a blast for the Jazz and their fans. So why not enjoy it? Don’t let over-analytical jerks like me police your fun with talk of regression or trades or opponents cracking the puzzle. Even if this 3-0 start becomes a footnote in the broader story of a rebuilding team with some struggles ahead, it’s still a welcome change of emotional energy and an exhiliarhating introduction to guys who could be laying the foundation for the next great Jazz era. And some of these dudes will still be on the team themselves when the Jazz climb back to relevance. So getting the chance to fall in love early at a time without weighty expectations is a cool blessing, even if the Jazz go 0-79 from here. (Spoiler alert: they won’t.)
None of these guys might be here in a few years. I doubt more than a few at most
Markkanen looks like a legit 3-level scorer. He had a .619 true shooting season two years ago as Chicago experimented with his versatility, and he’s back in that ballpark to start the year. Remembering that sample sizes are comically small, only a dozen players in the league have logged 100 minutes so far with at least 23% usage and .600 true shooting: 10 literal All-Star guards, Nikola Jokic… and the Finnisher. He’s looking really solid. If you popped out of a time machine and told me this current Jazz roster included the player who would become Utah’s next All-Star at some point, right now I’m assuming that guy is Markkanen.
Sexton is more likely. Lauri will be gone by the trade deadline
…Walker Kessler. His comfort level as a rookie has definitely been among the more surprising storylines so far. So many rookies spend time looking lost early on, but the young center already has a great understanding of where to be, where help is coming from, how to rotate, etc. Hardy has used him as both a paint anchor and also as a free roamer, the same way the Celtics used Robert Williams last year. That they already feel confident enough to give Kessler different assignments is a huge compliment. In 64 minutes, the Jazz have outscored opponents by +13.0 per 100 possessions. Again, take that as descriptive rather than predictive, but it’s still interesting for a rookie big man.
no rookie under COTM looked as good this early. Not sure if that's a credit to Kessler or Hardy or says something about COTM
For this week, we’ll give you a date to watch: October 31. Next Monday is the Jazz’s deadline to decide whether or not to exercise the options for Udoka Azuibuike’s fourth year or Leandro Bolmaro’s third. The former has yet to suit up this season, while the latter has played exactly one minute. It will be interesting to see if the Jazz rest Conley at all during this busy week of action, and if that creates any opportunities for Bolmaro to make his case for another year. He might be more likely to be picked up anyway since he’s relatively affordable: the guard’s 2023-24 salary is only a half million or so more than a minimum salary slot, whereas Dok’s ($3.9M) is nearly double if exercised.
I'd guess neither but at that price it might make sense to pick up Bolmaro. The problem is he might be the next guy on the cutting block if they have to take on extra guys in a trade or whatever. Need flexibility
Friday 10/28, Jazz @ Nuggets: Reigning 2-time MVP Nikola Jokic will have only needed to wait a week for his chance at avending a season-opening loss to the Jazz, who have now claimed six in a row over the Nuggets. Since that stunner in Salt Lake, Denver is 2-0, and the Joker is 0.3 assists off from averaging a triple double in his first three outings. Jamal Murray doesn’t quite look like himself yet (14.0 ppg, but just .515 true shooting), but Michael Porter Jr. and new Nugget Kentavious Caldwell-Pope are both shooting 50% from three on a combined 14 attempts per game. If Murray and Aaron Gordon find a rhythm, this team could get really scary.
I think D will be an issue

That’s an interesting trade package that makes you wonder what the details of those picks were. We had heard this rumor before, but that there were heavy protections on those picks. Was Danny Ainge looking to find a better fit in Kelly Olynyk, or would he have traded for the picks if they were unprotected? We’ll probably never know for sure, but it’s clear that there will likely be more discussions at some point. From O’Connor’s article:
he likes Kelly I'm sure but it's all about the picks. Doubt anyone is untouchable now. Maybe Kessler and Vanderbilt?
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that a trade involving Westbrook isn’t likely until after Thanksgiving. That’s around the same time that Dennis Schröder, who at this point is undoubtedly a better point guard than Westbrook, could return from his thumb surgery.

Malik Beasley and Jordan Clarkson (https://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/2528426/jordan-clarkson) are two off-the-bench spark plugs that could lead the second unit of a contender. Lauri has been the Jazz’s best player so far this season. If the Jazz are able to keep up the success that they have shown in these opening games, Lauri has a shot at his first All-Star selection. He’s definitely playing like one right now.
i think impact stats may tell a different story
Besides Markkanen, the only player that looks to have a realistic shot at an All-Star selection is the legend Jordan Clarkson. Clarkson’s role has definitely shifted this season, and he has fully embraced it and has been really really good. He’s currently averaging a career high in points, minutes, and nearly doubling his career high for assists per game at 5.3. That has been one of the funnest things to watch this season is Clarkson’s ability to distribute, make plays, and pass the ball. The Jazz have found themselves in close games in each of the last three matchups, and JC has been coming up huge for them in the clutch.
for me painful not fun. Clutch dribble off his foot?
He’s also just making plays everywhere. This hustle play to chase down Zion Williamson of all people and block a dunk attempt that turned out to be a massive play (and injured Williamson, prayers up to the hip, getting feeling better homie) was just amazing.
after another one of his turnovers!:facepalm
The All-Star game in SLC will be quite the experience, even if the Jazz don’t have any players make it. Having Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert possibly back in town for the All-Star game would be pretty cool. Looking forward to see what Ryan Smith can do, and if he has any impact on making the All Star Jerseys as bright and glaring as possible.

The Jazz added former Chicago Bull, Cleveland Cavalier big man, and sharpshooter Lauri Markkanen (https://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/4066336/lauri-markkanen). After not living up to expectations, Markkanen looks like a much-improved player after a busy summer. The Jazz has done what the Bulls couldn’t and are reaping the benefits.
who's expectations? Based on where he was drafted he's probably close to what you'd expect
The Jazz is ranked fourth in the league in points scored, ranked second in steals per game, and third in steals. They also rank in the top 10 in the league in offensive rating and net rating.
the steals are a new thing. Too bad we never got to see Gobert with a team like this around him

“I’ve heard the same stuff that other people have reported that they are just super reluctant to move Clarkson. They’re really fond of him for whatever reason so I would peg him as the least likely of all these Jazz guys to get traded.”
He's the one that has to go. What possible reason would you keep him if some team is actually stupid enough to want him?
This matches up with what we’ve heard from other local reporters that the Jazz are reluctant to trade Jordan Clarkson and would like to keep him on the team. It makes sense in the context of the current situation with the Jazz. Clarkson is a great guy to have in the locker room, which can be invaluable for a team that will likely see some turmoil this season. He’s also a fun player to watch that creates at least one highlight play every night. Remember this?
one highlite play or many bricks, prayers, turnovers and horrible D? Take your choice :facepalm
The Jazz have come out hot and have been a lot of fun to watch to begin the season, but it’s more than likely that this team will have some extended periods of losing. If they go through any type of cold spell shooting, or if they have some injuries to any of their key players, there will be some extended losing streaks. To have a player like Clarkson when the chips are down can be beneficial to a coach and to a culture. When teams are winning, everyone is all-in on doing what’s best for the team. When the losses start piling up, you start to see guys looking to get their stats for future contracts.
he's the first one looking for his
On top of all that, we’ve seen Clarkson evolve his game as a distributor. Sure, it’s only four games, but Clarkson is averaging a career-high 5.3 assists per game, which is 2 more assists per game than his career average. Could Clarkson play more point guard if a trade happens with Mike Conley? It could happen if the Jazz make some sort of move with the Lakers (https://www.slcdunk.com/2022/10/24/23422297/are-the-utah-jazz-working-on-a-trade-with-the-los-angeles-lakers-for-russell-westbrook-rumor).

One offer reportedly involved the Utah Jazz and would’ve netted the Lakers sharpshooter Bojan Bogdanovic, veteran forward Rudy Gay and veteran point guard Mike Conley.
It would’ve cost them two future first-round draft picks, but some fans felt it was the best offer available.
Reportedly, the Jazz were on board with that deal, and they were even willing to sweeten the pot for the Lakers.

If NBA insider Zach Lowe’s latest report is true, Utah Jazz fans can take a big sigh of relief on the Jordan Clarkson front. The senior ESPN writer reported that the Jazz are most likely going to keep former Sixth Man of the Year. “I’ve heard the same stuff that other people have reported that they are just super reluctant to move Clarkson,” Lowe said. ”They’re really fond of him for whatever reason so I would peg him as the least likely of all these Jazz guys to get traded.” (https://www.si.com/nba/jazz/news/jazz-keeping-jordan-clarkson-rumor)

During the offseason, Westbrook was the subject of trade rumors with teams like the Indiana Pacers and Utah Jazz. However, the Lakers were never able to come to an agreement on a deal. Despite that, there is still time for a deal to be made. “The big trades that people want with the Lakers, Westbrook and his $47 million out with those first-round picks the Lakers have in ’27 and ’29, all the deals the Lakers didn’t want to do in the offseason, that’s all that’s there two weeks into the season,” Wojnarowski said. “Teams don’t really get serious about doing deals and maybe pivoting away from trying to be a playoff team or trying to go toward the lottery in a year where there’s Victor Wembanyama available. They’re not going to do that until 20 or 30 games into the season. So, all the deals the Lakers didn’t think gave them enough value for trading those picks, they’re all still there. Utah, Indiana, who the Lakers talked with a lot in the offseason, I’m told they’ve not heard from the Lakers yet this season (https://lakersdaily.com/nba-insider-says-a-russell-westbrook-move-to-the-lakers-bench-is-probably-inevitable/). “And so, people are going to have to get used to a team that’s not going to be able to make dramatic change for a while, if really at all this year.”

https://factoryofsadness.co/2022/10/25/its-too-early-to-say-whether-the-utah-jazz-or-the-cleveland-cavaliers-are-winners-of-the-summer-trade/
It’s too soon to say the Utah Jazz or the Cleveland Cavaliers have won the Donovan Mitchell trade.
I'd be shocked if the Jazz don't win this big. Could argue Lauri is better. Sexton certainly looked like he could be better. Good thing Hardy makes guys play D unlike COTM. Still have another lottery pick and 3 unprotected to come
When it comes to early season expectations, the Cavs are looking at an Eastern Conference Finals appearance at least, while the Jazz was expected to tank for Victor Wembanyama. Markkanen’s hot start and 3-1 record have put the Jazz’s ability to land the perceived No.1 Overall Pick in the 2023 NBA Draft in jeopardy.
Cavs have to make the playoffs first. No guarantee in a now tough East
Now, if the Jazz stays the course, doubles down with Markkanen, doesn’t trade the rest of their vets, and makes the playoffs, is that enough? Some NBA pundits believe that being a middle team in the NBA, a bottom-four playoff team, for example, is worse than being a rebuilding team. Especially if you don’t have a game-changing superstar like Wembanyanma.
that's probably where the Cavs are. Jazz will suck. Give them time
The Jazz are living examples of that; they felt they hit their ceiling with Mitchell, Rudy Gobert, and Bojan Bogdanovic leading the way, so they got dealt. Let’s say this new-look Jazz makes the playoffs, then what? Utah isn’t a free-agent destination, and their best bet on rebuilding into an NBA Finals contender is through the draft.
pretty obvious what was needed was a new coach which was obvious after the bubble if not sooner. I'd have dealt Mitchell and Clarkson and let the statue play with an unselfish team that gets after people defensively
Is Markkanen about to become Dirk Nowitzki? Probably not, but he’s good enough to get them more wins. So if they’re not wanting to tank, then sure, keep Markkanen and stay the course. If they do want to tank, then Markkanen is keeping them from that.
he never won elsewhere. Conley is what is holding it together. Hardy had him in with 5 fouls with a quarter to play because no one else can run the offense. Butler was the only other one and he's gone

Last season, losing Darius Garland would have doomed the Cavs to a winless streak to start the season. From the time Ricky Rubio tore his ACL, Garland was the only player on the roster capable of creating for both himself and others at a high level. Any success they achieved was cobbled together by defense and willpower.
Neto was often better than Rubio when they were here. Too bad COTM never liked Neto. Hardy would for sure. Could actually use him
Mitchell is carrying a heavy burden, with the league’s fifth-highest usage rate, and it will be best for the Cavs’ offense when Garland returns and that eases a bit. Yet it’s hard to argue with the results: second in Win Shares, top-15 in Box Plus-Minus, and sixth in points per game. Mitchell has been everything the Cavs needed and more to start the season.
you definitely don't want Mitchell having the ball that much. That was a problem here
They can't win them all. Especially playing their 4th game in 6 days. That said this will not be the year the Jazz win it all. That will be years from now if at all. The Cav's will be a threat to win it all much sooner. Still both teams appear to be likely to come out ahead on this trade.
they aren't winning it all. Small backcourt, perimeter D issues. Mitchell dominating the ball...same things that happened here

For context, if Markkanen were to reach 213 dunks for the Jazz, he’d have the 24th most-prolific dunking season in league history, tying noted finishers Shaquille O’Neal and Clint Capela.
At this pace, Markkanen looks like he’ll easily become the second-most prolific dunker in Jazz history behind only Rudy Gobert.
Gobert has five seasons that would beat Markkanen’s projected 213 dunks, but Derrick Favors record of 150 dunks in 2017-18, the most by a Jazzman not named Gobert, is in serious danger.
6th best in team history is not a record. Believe Gobert was on pace to break his NBA record when he got COVID
And, his shots rarely come in the flow of the offense as tends to dribble the air in the half-court.
sounds like the owner's favorite bum
The Jazz win will turn 22 in late November and at that age, there’s plenty of room for development. It’s not at all far-fetched to think Horton-Tucker could be a serious role player for a championship contender by the end of his career if he can put his full game together.
unless he shoots better he'll have a tough time sticking. Looks like he could be in better shape to me as well
Jarred Vanderbilt has fouled out in both home games this season. His 26 fouls through five games are tied for the fourth-most by a player to begin the season in NBA history.
must be in some great company there!
The Jazz were second in the NBA in steals per game at 10.6 and finished with 11 against the Rockets.

https://saltlakecity.gleague.nba.com/roster
Bolden put up 12 pts(52/40/62)/9 rbd/1 stl/1.5 blks) with Stars last year. center maybe could play 4? Back up Potter?
Bass looks good at the 4. 18 pts(49/34/79)/8 rbd/3 off/1 stl/1 blk in Gleague. Back up Cook?
Tyler Cook Did ok at multiple stops in the NBA. 25 pts(68/0/68)/8 rbd/2 ass/2 stl 1 blk in Gleague last year
Stacy Davis is supposed to be a 6'6 center. Played in Poland last year. 18 pts(47/34/80)/6 rbds/2 ass/1 stl. Play the 3 or 4?
Frank Jackson is the local guy that put up 11(40/30/83) with the Pistons last year
Isiah Miller put up 16(50/32/46)/6 rbd/3 ass/1.5 stl in gleague last year. Probably back up Frank at the 1?
Micah Potter 14 pts(44/40/77)/11 rbd/4 off/1 stl/1 blk in gleague. Start at center when Udoka or Kessler aren't down there?
Jeenathan Williams put up big numbers at a small college last year. Wing
Morsell put up pretty good numbers on a better team in college last year. Wing
Elijiah Lufile put up pretty good numbers at a smaller college last year. Says he's a center too at 6'8
Rawle Alkins was ok on the wing last year in the gleague
Armorie Archibald was ok at the Mailman's small school last year
Nino Johnson was a good energy guy for Stars last year.
I'd guess that is the roster along with Ochai Agbaji, Juzang and possibly Bolmaro, Udoka or Kessler after his last couple outings where he struggled.
Potter/Bolden
Cook/Bass
Juzang/Alkins
Ochai/Morsell/Williams
Jackson/Miller

Which is why the Jazz and Lakers remain the perfect partners for this tango, and why it’s no surprise reports leaked that Ainge is now willing to accept the Lakers’ offer of their only two remaining first-round picks — in 2027 and 2029 — and Westbrook in a deal that balances their roster and provides a perimeter threat at the point guard spot in Mike Conley.
I think Ainge was always willing for both picks. Lakers haven't seemed to want to give it up. Conley, Clarkson,Olynyk and Gay would almost be half the rotation that is winning in Utah. Assuming the Jazz owner can give up his boy Clarkson
The Lakers, however, can demand more for two reasons: First, LeBron James becomes a free agent after next season, and if he leaves Los Angeles, you can all but assume those first-rounders in 2027 and 2029 will be high lottery picks. Second, the Indiana Pacers are another team who can offer a better package with Myles Turner and Buddy Hield having been focal parts of their respective teams in the past.
Davis should be at the 5 and Lebron at the 4. Conley takes over Westbrook in the starting lineup. Gay backs up Lebron. Olynyk behind Davis and Clarkson comes off the bench as well. Jazz might want to wait for Lonnie Walker to become trade eligible in December though. Only 23 still. Played for Pop. Fit right in

Clarkson is the most likely of this group to stay into the next phase of his career, both because he’s the youngest (30) and because he has reportedly expressed a comfort level in Utah and a desire to mentor this young group. Gay is the least likely, because of his smaller role and a salary that makes him easier to move. The Olynyk-Conley order is debatable; Conley is a likelier candidate to be traded in the near term, but if that doesn’t happen, Mountain Mike has more connection to Utah by now. If the Jazz have a believable path to being good, there’s a non-zero chance he stays and lends his wisdom to the next core, too.
Clarkson the mentor! Gay's contract is through next year. Not sure he's not the hardest to move. They all need to go sooner than later
These two narrowly avoided training camp cuts, and are only ranked above the elder statesmen because the Jazz technically — as of today — have control of their futures via matching rights. The Jazz will lose those rights, though, if they decline the 2023-24 team option on either guy by the October 31 deadline. That’s looking more likely since neither one is in the rotation. If that happens, then these guys automatically drop below at least Clarkson — and maybe all four vets. If the Jazz exercise the option on either one, then they technically would be keeping the future in play in case that player ultimately ascends to the rotation. That’s why I’m keeping them here… for now.
Don't think Udoka was in danger of getting cut unless the doctors don't think he can ever stay healthy
(I’ll repeat my personal preference here: I’d decline Dok’s $3.9M option, but if they have any inkling from seeing Bolmaro in practice that he is a future rotational guy, I’d keep him since his 2023-24 salary is only about $500K above the minimum salary for a veteran anyway.)
the problem is flexibility. He's most likely the next guy cut if they have to cut someone
Fontecchio looked impressive in his first extended court time, but ranks behind the other two for contract reasons. First of all, his current deal lasts half as long as the rookie scale contracts of Kessler and Agbaji. And when he does hit free agency in 2024 (the Jazz will have matching rights if they want them), he can only be signed at that point for up to four years. So while Agbaji and Kessler could have 6-9 years as Jazzmen before they experience free agency, Fontecchio won’t make it past year six with the Jazz unless he signs a minimum of three contracts. That alone was enough to list him last among this trio.
he's older. Once Olynyk and Gay are moved he'll be showcased so they can move him too
Both Sexton and Markkanen were sign-and-trade recipients after being squeezed a bit in the low-leverage throes of restricted free agency. The result is that both are paid reasonably, so at some point they become so valuable as trade assets that the Jazz have to consider their options. Otherwise, both will be around for a few years and will be given opportunities to lead this transitioning squad.
I'd guess Lauri is in the 2nd group to me moved

Rebounding, though, was particularly harmful for the Jazz, with the Nuggets pulling down 58 boards to the Jazz’s 38.
doubt they god rebounded by 20 very many times since 2014
Lauri Markkanen came out scorching hot, giving the Jazz a 9-3 lead, but the Jazz would struggle to have consistently good offense for the rest of the game. The other player who wasn’t hit with a cold spell was Mike Conley, who continues to play great for the Jazz. Conley went 4/7 from the field, 4/5 from three with 5 assists in just 23 minutes. It’s clear the Jazz were trying not to overdo it with Conley, as they are on the front end of a back-to-back and aren’t looking to wear out their veteran point guard. There may also be other things going on in the background. This is now 3 games in a row where Conley has been in the low 20s in minutes. Are the Jazz trying to keep him fresh and healthy for a potential move?
got to keep him healthy
Jordan Clarkson, who’s had a fantastic season so far, was hit by a cold spell and couldn’t find the bottom of the net. For the game, Clarkson shot 1/10 from the field and 0/7 from three. Clarkson has been a major cog in the Jazz matching that has gotten them their 4 wins so far this season. For him to struggle makes it really difficult for this Jazz team to overcome bad night from multiple other players.
counting on that bum is a recipe for disaster
All the available players on the Jazz got minutes tonight, but what’s interesting is that 10 players got minutes in non garbage time. The lineups were different all night as it appears Hardy is willing to put different rotations on the floor based on in-game needs and that the Jazz are on the front end of a back-to-back. It’s refreshing how fluid everything is for the Jazz. Clarkson normally plays in the 30s in minutes, and with his shot not falling Hardy went to other players. The other thing that’s interesting about this is it shows that Hardy is willing to play rookies. Agbaji would likely never see the floor last season, but this year it’s looking like he might start earning more minutes. It’s nice to see.
I sure miss COTM :D

let's see how much they get in exchange for him before we say he's a major piece
On top of that, they’ve been fun to watch due to their fast-paced offense (https://www.nba.com/stats/teams/traditional?dir=A&sort=AST), rapid ball movement, and strong individual performances from Markkanen and Clarkson.
Clarkson is the one thing that is not fun about it

It’s time for the Lakers to let the Jazz save their season
there is no saving them
Another thing to consider with Conley is that he’s spent the last 3 seasons learning how to play off of one of the most ball-dominant guards in the league in Donovan Mitchell. He’s already made the transition from primary star playmaker to off-ball playmaker, something Russell Westbrook hasn’t been able to do. In his time with Utah he’s become a spot-up 3 sniper that can also run a secondary pick and roll when needed. He’s the perfect compliment to LeBron James. Imagine the shooting percentage from Mike Conley if he has LeBron James setting him up. It’s easy to see that working out really well in an incredible way.
yeah but how many games will Lebron, Conley and Davis actually be on the court together? That's the problem they will have
But that’s not all the Jazz could offer. A lot of people have mentioned Jordan Clarkson as a potential trade piece, but I would argue the Lakers should be asking for Malik Beasley. Beasley, who the Jazz acquired in the Rudy Gobert trade, is another sniper from three that could fill the Lakers’ massive deficit in shooting. Beasley is playing just 24 minutes per game off the bench and is playing in a primary playmaker role. Yes, Beasley is shooting 30% from three this year, but he’s a career 38% three-point shooter. Those numbers will go up once he’s on the floor with LeBron James. Just two seasons ago, Beasley was regularly putting up 20 points per game in 32 minutes per game. You could argue he’s just as good as Buddy Hield is for Indiana, and the Lakers could probably get both of these players.
everyone is better than Clarkson but Clarkson is the one that needs to go
Per game, Olynyk is scoring just 1 point less per game, is putting up nearly 3x as many assists, and is shooting it at a higher 3P%. And he’s doing this in 5 fewer minutes per game. When when you look at a per-36 comparison, the numbers get even more surprising. In the same amount of time on the floor, Olynyk is putting up more points per game, more rebounds, more assists, more steals ... everything. Danny Ainge must have been looking at this when he made the Bojan Bogdanovic trade. And this has panned out in the best way possible for the Jazz, who have seen Olynyk be a high-level starter for them at the PF/C position.
and Davis and Lebron should start up front. Olynyk off the bench with Gay and Clarkson. Conley starts
There is one issue here. The Jazz traded for Olynyk on September 22 and can’t trade him until two months after the trade (https://en.as.com/nba/can-nba-teams-trade-players-during-preseason-n/). This means the Lakers would have to wait till on or around November 22 to make that move. If they can somehow string together a few wins up until then, then they could make the move.
be too late by then
Sure, the Lakers would have zero draft capital after the trade, but you’re the Los Angeles Lakers. You’re the biggest brand in the league. LeBron James decided to join you. Anthony Davis forced his way out of New Orleans to join you. Isn’t that the model you use to improve your team? If you’re relying on picks to build your team it’s because your front office isn’t doing a good job in free agency. You have the advantage every other team dreams of. It’s time to make the move that will help you not waste another season of LeBron James and have confidence in your ability for the future.
can only hope they are that stupid

The ship could have sailed on that though, not that we specifically know what Utah were asking for in return. Clarkson’s impressive numbers are making him an even higher commodity around the league, building market competition which subsequently increases the asking price.
who is more stupid the Jazz owner or who ever trades for him?

Some players have their own ways of doing certain things, either on the court or off the court, and throughout NBA history, we had a fair share of bizarre and funny stories surrounding various players. One of those recent stories was about former NBA point guard Jamaal Tinsley, who accumulated around $250,000 in fines from the Indiana Pacers because he didn’t want to shower after practices and games.
– via Will Starjacki @ Basketball Network
Tinsley was a great and reliable point guard who showed up every time for the Pacers, but he developed a problem with the organization, specifically Reggie Miller. The Pacers legend forced the Pacers to change their rule of conduct after he noticed Tinsley never took showers with the team, and it didn’t matter if it was the games or the practices. They decided to penalize Tinsley every time he didn’t shower, and apparently, he didn’t budge at all, according to Sundov in his interview with Podcast Inkubator. “Tinsley wouldn’t shower after practices or games. We easily enter or exit the shower, and he would be dressed already exiting the locker room. Once, twice, three times… And Reggie Miller says to the team manager: ‘Bring the team rule book, we have to add one change that every player must shower after every training session, especially after every game, otherwise he will be punished.’ The first fine was $500, and it would be doubled every other time he didn’t take a shower.”
– via Will Starjacki @ Basketball Network
Tinsley said that he preferred taking showers at his house rather than showering with the team. Apparently, he didn’t want to get naked with the rest of his teammates and was extremely shy, which is understandable if that was the actual case. However, there was a way to handle that better internally, and Sundov said he and the rest of the teammates counted the number of fines, and Tinsley accumulated around $250,000 in fines throughout the entire season.

https://www.slcdunk.com/2022/10/30/23431851/utah-jazz-will-not-pick-up-options-on-udoka-azubuike-or-leandro-bolmaro
This is the beginning of the end of what was a disastrous pick for Utah Jazz when they took Udoka Azubuike at pick 27. DOK’s tenure with the Jazz was a tumultuous one and not really his fault. Azubuike dealt with a variety of injuries that sidelined him for extended periods of time, all of which hampered his ability to develop. But even with the injuries, DOK’s game has never really shown to be anything other than an athletic center who can’t shoot.
looked like a rotation player last year. Not bad for the end of the 1st round
Although, even with the injuries, the pickup was something that never should have happened. With players like Jaden McDaniels and Desmond Bane on the board, Dennis Lindsey made an absolutely atrocious pick taking Azubuike, who everyone rated as a late second-round pick. While Desmond Bane has been incredible for the Grizzlies, Azubuike sat on the bench and spent time in the G-League. In a lot of ways, that pick was the straw that broke the camel's back for the Jazz’s recent chapter. The Jazz made a series of head-scratching moves, like signing Derrick Favors for too much money, only to trade a first-round pick to get off his contract two years later. Because of moves like this, Dennis Lindsey would be demoted and it wasn’t much longer that the Jazz mutually parted ways with Quin Snyder. It’s almost poetic that the day before this happened Desmond Bane scored 32 points against the Jazz.
Bane and McDaniels wouldn't have played either. Needed a center
The other player whose option will not be picked up is Leandro Bolmaro. Bolmaro is intriguing with his length and athleticism for a guard, but there doesn’t appear to be an ability to shoot the ball. He has length and handles, but he’s too nervous to shoot the ball and in his short times on the floor has consistently avoided the shot to make other moves. He may figure that out in time, but it will be somewhere else after next season.

Especially in contrast to last season, this iteration of the Jazz — 5-2 entering Monday’s action — is fun. And a different kind of fun: one full of frenetic energy and youthful effort that is hard to remember after the disappointing way recent seasons played out. It may be the difference in styles. The newest version of the Jazz is defined by a bounce and exuberance fans have missed. While they appeared to be engineered for draft position optimization, watching them is like enjoying a team full of 21-year-old Mitchells all over again.
like Mitchell but with defense and passing :facepalm
While the old Jazz team was undoubtedly effective, it was rigid in several ways. The team was crafted and optimized around Gobert and Mitchell. Both had limitations, but their strengths were so positive it was worth the effort to build around them. But come playoff time, their weaknesses were targeted by more flexible teams. Eventually the book was out on how to exploit the Jazz.
and a coach that refused to make any adjustments. Would have loved to see Gobert playing on a team like this. It's why all that talk of the Jazz reaching their ceiling was ridiculous. You going to tell me it Gobert was on a team that was sharing the ball and getting after it defensively that they wouldn't be better than the current team?

“I have not begged (Clarkson) to be a playmaker. I think I’ve just tried to explain to him where I think he fits in this group and try to empower him in that way. I’ve told him that if the game tells him to shoot 10 times in a row, then he should shoot 10 times in a row. But I just think he has more to offer us on that end.”
he doesn't though. Doesn't matter how many assists he gets if he's still taking and missing bad shots
When Clarkson first arrived in Utah, he had been branded (justifiably) as a low-efficiency gunner, but he quickly earned praise by rethinking his shot mix and becoming one of the league’s most reliable bench anchors. But his role was still to spark second unit offenses primarily with self-creation, using a combination of his flammable outside shot and clever drives. So watching him suddenly become one of the Jazz’s best table-setters has been really intriguing.
reliable?
The Jazz are also the sixth stingiest set defense in the league, allowing just 90.6 per 100 plays in the halfcourt. That’s despite allowing the most points per 100 reboundable opponent misses (29.1) than any other team in the league. If they could take better care of the boards, they’d be in really elite shape right now on defense. (Small sample size alert, though.)
if you're going to play big you have to rebound. He had 4 guards in last night with Olynyk. Great to see him try anything unlike COTM
Both guys can continue to audition to be considered a part of the future. The Jazz won’t have matching rights on either guy next summer, but they will have a version of Bird rights for both if either guy somehow announced himself as a future building block in the next 6 months. They’ll have full Bird rights on Dok (meaning they could technically offer him anything up to the max salary) and Early Bird rights on Bolmaro (up to around $12 million, or they could go beyond that with cap space). But let’s be frank here: this decision signals that the Jazz think the likelihood of needing to keep either guy past next spring is low. Remember that the Jazz have a dozen guys with guaranteed money or some sort of option for next season, plus Nickeil Alexander-Walker potentially entering restricted free agency and three first-round draft selections. Honestly, it would be a little hard to even find a 2023-24 roster spot for Dok/Bolmaro, at least based on today’s depth chart.
more to do with flexibility than anything.

Ochai Agbaji comes in as the 11th most valuable player on the Utah Jazz roster. He came to Utah as part of the Donovan Mitchell trade to the Cleveland Cavaliers (https://www.fearthesword.com). Agbaji was the Big 12 Player of the Year as well as the NCAA Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player as he lead Kansas to a National Championship. Ochai averaged nearly 19 points a game and is an elite outside shooter. He’s got great length and athleticism that should translate well to the NBA game. He may not get a lot of minutes as a rookie with how deep this Jazz roster is, but don’t let that fool you. I still expect him to develop into a nice wing after being a lottery pick in the 2022 NBA draft (https://www.sbnation.com/nba-draft).

We’ve quickly realized that the team still doesn’t feature any real zeroes, and new coach Will Hardy is getting this new group to play their asses off. Veterans Mike Conley, Jordan Clarkson, and Rudy Gay are still around, and in exchange for Mitchell and Gobert (and Bojan Bogdanovic) they added competent, actual NBA talent to play every minute: Collin Sexton, Lauri Markkanen, Jarred Vanderbilt, Kelly Olynyk, Walker Kessler, Malik Beasley, and Talen Horton-Tucker. Just outside the rotation, they have real NBA experience (Nickeil Alexander-Walker) and prime first-round talent (Ochai Agbaji) on deck if needed. Turns out the tent can still stand—even if flapping in the wind a little bit—without its tentpoles if the surrounding infrastructure remains bolted in the ground.
Clarkson is the definition of a zero
We think of Mitchell’s rookie season so magically—a special, unique event that singlehandedly changed the team’s mediocre outlook to immediate contention. It’s easy to see why, with so much of the success baked into a single man’s performance. My question to you is: why couldn’t this Utah Jazz team do the same, but in the collective? It would be a team suddenly starting its ascent a year or three ahead of schedule, just like Mitchell’s rookie season, but this time with a couple great starters, a kickass coach, and a metric ****ton of draft assets to transition to the next level.
they were closer to the top pick than to the playoffs when Gobert came back from injury to carry them to the 5th seed. Statue

not sure why anyone would trust Clarkson
There were the missed open 3-pointers down the stretch and the bunny in the post that Clarkson rolled off the rim in the closing minutes. There was Luka Doncic's 33 points and 11 assists, and Reggie Bullock's big 3-pointer with 35 seconds to go. And, of course, the missed 3-pointer at the end.

yeah now ya just have to face Gobert instead! :facepalm
That energy is infectious and is without a doubt what has made the Jazz’s impressive start to the season so successful, especially on the defensive end. It would be difficult for any player to share the court with Vanderbilt and see how much effort he’s putting into trying to create extra possessions and not increase their own efforts.
didn't seem to matter when Gobert and O'Neale were going all out while others played matador on the perimeter

https://www.slcdunk.com/2022/11/4/23437194/utah-jazz-nba-early-mock-drafts
Jeff Goodman’s mock draft 1.0 has the Jazz taking the freshman Oregon center with several others placing him in the mid-first. Ware isn’t in the unicorn mold (unsurprising as he’d be getting mocked higher than 12 if he were), fitting more into the rim-running/shot blocking role.
already have Kessler for that
Smith’s calling card is his scoring. He put up 16.3 points per game as a freshman at NC State, though his efficiency was greatly lacking and may have factored into his decision to stick around. He shot a solid 36.9 percent from three but a woeful 43.7 percent inside the arc. He ranked in the 14th percentile in points per possession at the rim where he made just 46.3 percent of his attempts.
no thanks
The younger brother of Keegan, who was drafted by the Kings this past draft, Kris projects as a 3-and-D player with less upside as his brother. He’s got length and hit 38.7 percent of his three last season. He only played 17.9 minutes last year at Iowa, but per 36 minutes he averaged 19.5 points and 8.5 rebounds.
sounds more like it
According to Shams Charania, the Jazz “have teams calling them every day” inquiring about Jordan Clarkson and Malik Beasley. Were Utah to trade one or both of those guys it would be a significant loss. Clarkson is currently averaging 16.5 points per game (second on the team) and Beasley is putting up 11.9 per outing (fifth on the team).

“That play bothered me a lot,” Hardy said. “Lonnie Walker went 94 feet, right-handed, down the middle of the lane and dunked it and not one player on our team picked up the ball. No one talked. We had a couple of guys who actually ended up under the basket while he was dunking it in transition. And that’s unacceptable for our group. There are a lot of moments where I have to maintain my poise with the team and then every now and then I need to let it rip.”
good for you
He hit his first three 3-pointers, was making good reads and played really well with the guys on the floor, especially Juan Tuscano-Anderson. I obviously haven’t watched all of the Lakers games and I don’t know what the answer is for the team that started the season 0-5. But this might have been a really good move.

One part of the documentary in particular caught my attention. At some point the lightbulb went off for the coaches and the myriad NBA superstars that they had to change their style of play in order to win at the international level. In one particularly notable interview, Coach K sits down, looks into the camera, and states that despite the talent gap between them and the other countries, Team USA would only win if they adapted to everyone else’s game.
the lightbulb was the 2004 olympics though it should have happened after they got beat in the worlds.
The implication was abundantly clear, even if Coach K, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, and the rest of the interviewees seemed to have it go directly over their heads. The default style of American basketball is so bad, that even a talent disparity of epic proportions isn’t always enough to negate a team that simply plays a different brand of basketball.
the same kind of ball Mitchell, Clarkson and apparently COTM prefer
In a game defined by pick and rolls and isolation, the Jazz rank 25th and 20th, respectively, in frequency of each. They’re 10th in the league in passes per game, despite operating at a league average pace. The Jazz aren’t alone here. The San Antonio Spurs (https://www.poundingtherock.com), co-drivers of the Wembanyana-bound train, shockingly sit at 5-3. They’ve run just 18 isolation plays all year, which is only a hair more than the Mavericks average per game. The Indiana Pacers (https://www.indycornrows.com), who surprisingly sport the league’s seventh-best offense (https://www.cleaningtheglass.com/stats/league/fourfactors) in a rebuild year, are the only team in San Antonio’s stratosphere when it comes to isolation infrequency.
Defenses have little chance as it is in the NBA today. Move the ball and it gets tougher. Under COTM they were at their best when the ball moved not when Mitchell and Clarkson were playing 1 on 5

So where does that leave the fans? Is there any point in emotionally investing in a TV show you know the network is itching to cancel? If you’re not fighting for the trophy, you’re fighting for ping pong balls, the wisdom of our age insists. The Jazz are asking their fans to drink some gross medicine. “You may not feel like you’re sick now,” they insist, “but trust us: you’ll feel better in time.” Many of those fans may not feel sick at all, not at 6-3. But Dr. Ainge is here with his needles and he’s going to vaccinate, like it or not.

https://saltcityhoops.com/what-matters-most-to-transitioning-jazz-part-2-development-identity/
Look at the last Jazz rebuild: would former top-3 pick Enes Kanter’s career have played out any differently if his early minutes had been contingent on him showing a willingness to put in the work in practice and individual skill sessions? Would Trey Burke’s? Maybe, maybe not. We don’t get to find out. The same story has played out with dozens of talented youngsters who were gifted a role based on raw talent and upside, potentially removing some of the motivation to really study how to contribute to winning in the team context.
Kanter worked didn''t he? Good player . He was never going to be much of a defender no matter how hard he worked
Still, watching this all play out is fascinating, and one of my favorite things about watching a team that’s in any sort of a rebuilding phase. The Jazz already have one rookie — Walker Kessler — who has earned a rotation spot by understanding what Hardy wants and being able to execute the game plan on both ends. Hardy is also playing 21-year-old Talen Horton-Tucker, about whom most fans are ambivalent at best but who has some NBA knowhow after logging 3,000 Laker minutes. (For the record, I’d personally be fine with less THT too, but I understand why Hardy goes there.) Jarred Vanderbilt and Collin Sexton are both 23 and are among the team’s top seven minute-getters.
he's playing the best guys the way it should be. You should earn you minutes. That's been a big problem since the league got younger 25 yeas ago. Always the Stars if you're not playing
But I’m also referring to the broader identity shift that will inevitably happen when the Jazz figure out who their next core is. For example, the style of play changed abruptly in early 2015 when the Jazz started to realize what they had in Rudy Gobert. Eventually, if things go right, the Jazz will have a player (or players) good enough to define the way they play. Then they can determine what is needed to complement the ecosystem that will maximize that star or set of stars. Maybe someone like Markkanen or Sexton will be part of that answer, with further development. Maybe it will be answered through the draft. Maybe the Jazz will compile assets at some point in attempt to acquire a defining player via trade.
2014. Too bad they never really did build properly around their best player. Would have loved having an unselfish team playing D around him like they have now

We are 11 games into the season and the Jazz are 8-3. They are tied with the Phoenix Suns at the top of the Western Conference. They are the only team in the Western Conference to have as many as eight wins. Of those eight wins, six of those victories are against teams that either made the playoffs or the Play-In Tournament last season. “This was tough at first because I’m 35 and I’m so used to having championship aspirations,” Conley told The Athletic. “I came to the Jazz to play for championships. So I was wondering what would end up happening. But once we got a new coach (Will Hardy) in here and he started laying things out, I knew that I wanted to be here. Utah’s found a way to beat multiple styles. The Jazz through 11 games have shown they can win a track meet or a slugfest. It’s the start that nobody imagined, not even the Jazz themselves. Not even Conley. “If you had told me in July or August that we would be playing this well, I would’ve said, ‘Hey I’ll take it,’ ” Conley said. “Because it’s so early, I don’t want to take it as validating what we believe because we have a lot of proving to do. The Nuggets, Clippers, Pelicans, Timberwolves and Grizzlies were all considered virtual playoff locks before the 2022-23 NBA season began. The plucky, surprising Utah Jazz have already beaten all of them.
not sure any of them were locks between injuries and being unproven
The Lakers have been a total mess, at 2-6 even outside their loss to Utah.
they had been good defensively though and the Jazz scored on them
The Jazz won and lost to the Rockets, who are 0-8 in all other games. Third-leading Houston scorer Alperen Sengun didn’t play in either game.
back to back scheduled loss
The Wolves were healthy when they fell — also in overtime — to the Jazz, but they are 5-4 in all other games and their stars are still figuring out how to play together: Rudy Gobert, Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Edwards are -5.1 per 100 possessions as a trio.
need to figure it out. Too much talent
Collin Sexton is having the most efficient season of his pro career, with .607 true shooting through Sunday. He is maximizing his shot profile: a career-high 34.5% of his shots are threes (which he’s hitting at a 39.5% clip), and he has attempted just one long two all season.
better than Mitchell!
The Jazz are allowing teams to rebound 31.1% of their misses, the third worst figure in the league. They also allow 24.4 plays per 100 reboundable opponent miss, the highest figure in the league.
not good when your playing bigger than most teams
When the Jazz offloaded stars and started collecting future picks, nobody would have guessed that the least favorable of their 2023 owned picks would be their own. But 11 games in, that’s where things stand.
2 lottery picks still!

The Jazz lack starpower — although Mitchell trade piece Lauri Markkanen (21.8 points, 9.4 rebounds) and Utah leftover Jordan Clarkson (17.9 points, 5.3 assists) are thriving in larger roles, putting up the best numbers of their careers. Opponents and scouts rave about how hard and selflessly this mishmash roster plays for Hardy. “It’s not the same team at all,” Conley says. “We’ve got something about us that’s just gritty and mean and carefree at the same time.” (https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/34974180/the-hoop-collective-cleveland-best-team-lebron-fueling-cavs)

You don’t trade two all-stars during an offseason and get better. That’s what the Jazz’s early start suggests, but it’s false hope.
change coaches and you might though which is why I thought it was ridiculous saying the Jazz hit their ceiling not knowing what a coach that might actually make adjustments in the playoffs would do. I'd love to see Gobert playing with a hard working unselfish group
And for as good as the Jazz has been this season, it’s difficult to say that there are any foundational building blocks currently on the roster. Can you buy Lauri Markkanen’s hot start? He’s 25 years old and has not broken out as a star. We’re supposed to believe that he’s one now? I’m sorry but that’s difficult to believe for me.
yep and we know Clarkson sucks
Jordan Clarkson has been great to start the year but he’s already 30 years old and there’s a good chance he’s already played the best basketball of his career.
and his best was awful
The Jazz has been a good story so far this season but the franchise needs to keep its eye on the prize and not fall in love with this false hope. I’m not sure what the front office is waiting for but it’s time for them to cash in on some of these players that they know are not going to be building blocks for the future. Before they mess around and fall right back into NBA purgatory.
at least give me Clarkson please!

In July, Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid got French citizenship, but his future with the national team of France was in doubt when he later gained US papers. Despite that, the general manager of the Blues Boris Diaw, who earlier stated that Thomas Heurtel is not scratched, still believes that the Cameronian-born player will play for France.
“There has been no development since the last time we spoke. The American nationality was something we knew for quite some time. It’s more to make his living in the United States easier”, Diaw said, and with a resounding “Yes” he confirmed his beliefs (https://www.eurohoops.net/en/national-teams/1416903/diaw-confident-embiid-will-play-for-france/).

Now at 10-3, the Jazz are running out of questions that need to be answered.
Markkanen was brilliant once again as he continues to show he’s elevated his game to an All-Star level.
still early. Haven't really beaten anyone that hasn't been hurt or whatever
As long as Markkanen, Conley, and Clarkson continue their stellar play, and the supporting cast carries it’s share of the load, the Jazz will keep having success, and the wins shouldn’t come as a surprise.
there's absolutely no reason to think Clarkson won't start sucking. He's the streakiest guy in the league. Ainge needs to sell high. Conley is old
Rudy Gay has struggled so far this season, and Udoka Azubuike has yet to prove he’s a consistent NBA player.

SALT LAKE CITY – Longtime NBA veteran and current game night television host Mike Smith called rookie Walker Kessler “the future” of the Utah Jazz.
I think he lasted 3 years. He might be an all-star today though.
A bit early to talk like that. From what I've seen he can play but his ceiling is limited. He doesn't have the length and isn't as athletic as Gobert. We've yet to see him shoot from the perimeter which he does to some extent
“I’m here to tell you that in three years, you won’t remember the center for the Jazz before him,” Smith said, “because he’ll be that good on both ends of the floor.”

Clarkson has been a starter in this league before, but until as recently as last season he had built a reputation as a bench gunner (https://www.deseret.com/2021/12/13/22826015/utah-jazz-jordan-clarkson-has-always-been-a-scorer-but-he-is-adding-new-playmaking-skills-his-game). https://www.slcdunk.com/2022/11/11/23453337/utah-jazz-roster-rank-mike-conley-voted-most-valuable
Right off the bat in summer camp he seemed liked a different player. I think the awkward locker room dynamics from the last year or two really wore on Mike. He doesn’t seem like a naturally vocal leader, so his relatively quiet example was less effective. But this year we have a bunch of hungry young guys who are eager to learn and work hard. And Mike is leading that crew extremely well. He seems like he’s enjoying himself a lot more this year. His scoring is down, but he’s absolutely lethal from three at 41%. He’s also averaging a career high 8 assists through 12 games. His fit next to Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert was good not great. But with this roster full of versatility and pick and pop guys he is thriving.
His fit was perfect with Gobert. They were one of the best duos in the league. Again it's too bad we didn't get to see Gobert with this coach and style of play
Will he be on the roster for the remainder of his contract? We’ll see. Just today Danny Ainge said he’s still very willing to make moves if it’s the right deal. And Mike Conley will absolutely be a name to watch with how he’s playing. A bad playoff series or two gave him an unfair reputation that he’s washed. But he’s still got plenty of ball left in him, especially if he’s your 3rd or 4th best player. A win-now team in need of a playmaker or point guard might decide he’s the missing link. If not, it’s fun to watch him be a plus/minus king!
was there ever a doubt Ainge was willing. If the price is right anyone can be had. I'd be happy win or lose with this team if they'd just get rid of Clarkson!

https://www.slcdunk.com/the-downbeat-latest-jazz-news/2022/11/10/23452149/six-important-stats-behind-the-jazz-10-3-start
The Jazz have five players making at least one three-pointer per game while shooting over 38% from three. They are one of only six teams that meet that criteria. The shooting comes from everywhere. Mike Conley, Jordan Clarkson, and Malik Beasley play the most rotation minutes in the backcourt, and each of them is shooting over 41% from deep on over five attempts per game. Collin Sexton is even coming off the bench and hitting 38% from downtown.
one of those will be nowhere near 41% when all is said and done. Sell high Danny!
The Utah Jazz rank fourth lowest in the percentage of their points coming from the midrange at only 4.5%. That means 95.5% of the team's points come from the paint, the three-point line, or the free throw line. According to cleaningtheglass.com (http://cleaningtheglass.com), the Jazz take the league's lowest percentage of "long midrange" shots. That's modern, intelligent, efficient basketball.

The team’s starting guards are both likely to fall off shooting-wise too, as Mike Conley and Jordan Clarkson are both above their career-marks from behind the arc. Kelly Olynyk has been a revelation in the frontcourt, but he’s certainly not going to shoot 58.8% from three all season.
it's a given for the bum that he will fall off a cliff
Lastly, we have to factor in that Ainge isn’t married to anyone on this roster. If the right trade comes along, Ainge will make it. He’s playing the long game in Utah. Even if that means taking a step back in what’s been a fun season, Ainge will make a move if he has one.
Clarkson is a step forward. After that I'm happy

I know it’s really early, and I know you’ve gotta jump. But when you got dealt, one of the first questions was your contract and your future with this group. We didn’t see Cleveland coming, so a lot of folks started assuming, “Oh, he’s gonna bounce in a few years.” Then you get here, and you see how good it could be, what’s your level of enthusiasm about the long-view? Donovan Mitchell: Yeah, I’m not interested in any of the down-the-road (discussion). But like I said, we have a lot of potential with this group. (https://theathletic.com/3819777/2022/11/11/donovan-mitchell-interview-cavs-jazz-knicks-gobert/) We have a lot of guys that can really get going. We can really build something special. And that’s really what I’m hoping for. I can’t control what our result is come June, May, our playoff success, our future success. But right now we’ve got a lot of great pieces. And as far as two or three years, I can’t sit here and give you anything. That’s the one thing from this summer that I’m very happy about is I just said, “F— what happens. F— tomorrow. F— the next day.” How can I be — excuse my language, by the way — but how can I just be the best Donovan today and let the rest handle itself? I mean, I’ve got stuff to prove myself. Last one for you: You’re gonna see Rudy on Sunday. How do you want people to remember that chapter? Donovan Mitchell: You know, we gave Utah a lot of special moments. (https://theathletic.com/3819777/2022/11/11/donovan-mitchell-interview-cavs-jazz-knicks-gobert/) On the court, it didn’t work. I don’t hate Rudy. He doesn’t hate me. Later, he was asked about his leg after falling in the second quarter and walking gingerly (but remaining in the game). He said that it was his ankle, which felt “pretty sore” after the game, and also addressed some concerns about his shoulder. “I don’t know what happened. But some days I can’t lift my arm up. And when I go block shots, I really feel it,” the Sixers superstar said. (https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-joel-embiid-reveals-concerning-shoulder-issue-after-dominant-performance-vs-hawks) “I don’t know what’s going on. But it’s whatever.”

When he was in Memphis, the Grizzlies used Marc Gasol's playmaking ability to play out of the post, and relied on Conley's isolation game. In his first few years in Utah, Conley played off the ball because Donovan Mitchell was so dynamic.
don't forget COTY. Jazz were at their best when Conley and Gobert were running pick and roll

That was never clearer than when Jordan Clarkson pulled up for an open 3 with 2:49 left. If he would have made that shot, the Jazz would have been down just 6 points and still had a chance. It missed, and seconds later Porizingis drained a 3-pointer of his own.
what is clear is Clarkson is not clutch
Collin Sexton scored 13 of his 17 points in the third quarter to keep Utah within striking distance at the end, and Utah cut Washington's lead to 6 points with 8:13 left in the fourth quarter, but couldn't come up with enough stops down the stretch.

Clarkson got the Jazz going early scoring seven first quarter points on 3-3 shooting, but connected on just 5-15 the rest of the way for 13 points.
hard not to love the bum
But, considering his ability to force his way into the paint, his circus finishes at the rim, his strong midrange game, and his recent hot shooting (38 percent from three over the last five games), there are clear shades of Manu Ginobili in his game.

Mike Conley, usually one of the most reliable scorers on the roster, had a tough time getting shots to fall on Saturday. He finished 0-of-5 from 3-point range and 1-of-8 overall. Even on nights when Conley doesn’t score much he usually isn’t inefficient and makes up for it with the rest of his game, and while he had 10 assists, the Jazz desperately needed some scoring from him.

While that may have seemingly ruled out a trade to the Lakers in the moment, it has not ruled it out indefinitely. In fact, the Lakers could move back in on Bogdanovic despite him having recently signed an extension — more on that later — according to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports on his “Please Don’t Aggregate This” podcast: “He’s a player that I think a lot of winning teams, a team looking to get to the second round that’s never gotten there or a team that wants to push their way to really be a title threat (would want)… Phoenix was at the top of everyone’s list in terms of suitors that have capital to pay in addition to talent and the salaries that made sense… The Lakers were obviously involved. I got a list of other teams that I think have called and contacted, but nothing too crazy at this point in terms of actual conversations that are still ongoing. (https://www.silverscreenandroll.com/2022/11/13/23454414/lakers-trade-rumors-bojan-bogdanovic-detroit-pistons-phoenix-suns) I do know Detroit is getting calls on him just like any team (when) we’re getting close to the Dec. 15 area where a lot of players who signed (in free agency last summer) are going to be eligible (to be traded). That’s kind of the unofficial start of the trade window. But also he’s playing really well for this team right now.”

The truth is that Embiid is one of the best at drawing fouls and selling contact, and there’s a difference between flopping, and selling contact. Flopping suggests that there was no foul, but selling contact is making sure that the foul that was committed gets called, and Embiid is one of the best at that. His rip-through is literally on every scouting report.

Minnesota boasts a core of Karl-Anthony Towns, Anthony Edwards and D’Angelo Russell, so the team that Gobert joined is hardly devoid of talent. But none of their returning players managed to break the plus-5.0 RAPTOR threshold last season, with Towns coming closest at plus-2.0. (https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/does-trading-for-an-nba-star-work-its-complicated/) And even next to that established foundation, Gobert may well be the T-Wolves’ most impactful player. Although it hasn’t shown up in the on/off-court metrics yet, he theoretically fits the current construction of the roster, despite his co-star being another center. But the teams who improved most in the playoffs following a star acquisition had players already on the roster with higher RAPTOR ratings than the newcomer. Indeed, the Timberwolves are 5-7 against a relatively weak schedule early in the season, and though they have time to improve, they don’t currently have the profile of a championship contender.

Few around the league, though, expected to find the Croatian in this environment, as one of the rare veterans amid Detroit’s young roster construction. After the Utah Jazz dispatched Royce O’Neale, Rudy Gobert and then Donovan Mitchell across the map, rival front offices expected Bogdanovic’s inevitable departure to deliver another of Utah’s proven postseason performers to a team with contending aspirations. The Lakers certainly called, sources told Yahoo Sports. Phoenix engaged the Jazz as well (https://sports.yahoo.com/bojan-bogdanovic-providing-value-to-young-pistons-and-potentially-boosting-his-own-status-in-the-trade-market-144138939.html).

“What it really does is it gives them contract control so it’s easier to trade him in July,” one assistant general manager told Yahoo Sports, (https://sports.yahoo.com/bojan-bogdanovic-providing-value-to-young-pistons-and-potentially-boosting-his-own-status-in-the-trade-market-144138939.html) “when a team that needs him is far more likely to have cap space and wiggle room.”

The biggest upside for this game was that Utah really should have won. Maybe it was tired legs because of this being the back end of a back-to-back on the road, but Utah shot just 56% from the free throw line. Probably also a sign of tired legs was the bad decision-making, and bad shot choice. Utah had 17 turnovers, which is not good, but they also drove constantly to the rim against Embiid, who had 7 blocks. At what point do you decide that’s not a good shot? The good news about those things is they are fixable issues. Yes, the referees missed some obvious fouls for the Jazz at the end of this one, and those calls would have changed things for Utah, but the Jazz did shoot 23 free throws. This one is a game you chalk up to tired legs, and you move on. The Jazz have now lost two in a row, and if they lose their next one, then you start to worry a little. For now, the Jazz still look like one of the top teams in the league.
Philly back to back. Now we're worried about them losing?

The Cavs did not want to see Markkanen go, but when the teams started discussing concepts for a Mitchell deal, Utah insisted he be included. “I can remember when he got traded, he was sad about it that night because Cleveland was his first taste of winning,” Connelly said. “I told him this may end up being the best thing that could ever happen in your career. (https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/35026261/the-hoop-collective-victor-wembanyama-rise-spell-end-team-usa-dynasty) You go be the best player on the Jazz. “It’s really hard for young players sometimes to find their lane,” Hardy said. But Markkanen has definitely found his in Utah — and with it, his confidence. “Confidence is everything,” Markkanen said. “My third year in Chicago, it was hard for me mentally. (https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/35026261/the-hoop-collective-victor-wembanyama-rise-spell-end-team-usa-dynasty) … I was always trying to climb out of it.” He started seeing a sports psychologist, read “The Inner Game of Tennis” at the urging of his longtime trainer, Dan Connelly, and just kept at it. Eventually he had a breakthrough.

Markkanen has always shown flashes of star potential, but a lack of consistency during stops in Chicago and Cleveland have prevented him from breaking through as one of the NBA’s premier players.

And yet… those five together have been Utah’s best high-volume lineup, outscoring opponents by 16.1 per 100 possessions so far (+18.9 if you exclude garbage time and heaves). The collection of misfit toys has become a strength for the Utah Jazz, extending leads in some games and keeping the club in striking distance other nights. The group has runs totaling 23-8 in Philadelphia on Sunday. A night earlier, Beasley’s shooting and Sexton’s rim pressure kept Utah within striking distance. Sure, both of those games ended in losses, but the Jazz bench did their part.
no Clarkson
Sexton puts a ton of pressure on defenses, and it often results in easy points. He drives 8.5 times per game and gets fouled on 14.8% of them. The only player with at least eight nightly drives who draws more fouls on paint forays is Giannis Antetokounmpo. In all, 43% of his shooting possessions (FGA + shooting fouls drawn) come at the rim, an elite figure for a 6’2″ guard.
yet another thing he is better than Mitchell at
Speaking of drivers, Horton-Tucker has a way of making smaller defenders just bounce off of him as he rumbles to the hoop. Sure, he can get a little wild (https://twitter.com/danclayt0n/status/1588732941622206464?s=20&t=bDHYsvCwyrSBTWtyPeFXYw) at times, but the same spirit that leads to those daring attempts also cracks the defense open a few times a game. In that sense, he’s not unlike the wildly popular Clarkson, who also won over the fan base by straddling the line between audacious and “umm wut.”
difference is he's young
Gay is still waiting for his shot to come on — career low .445 true shooting… ugh — but there’s something to be said for knowing where to be. Somehow, the veteran has the best DRtg of the rotation guys (93.6) and he trailed only Kessler with a +16.0 net rating.
is it enough to get someone to take on his contract for next year?
There’s another lineup data quirk that, if it holds, might mean something. Small sample sizes be damned, but so far Utah’s best two lineups on a per-minute basis are when Sexton appears with the other four starters in lieu of Vanderbilt (+54.3 outside of garbage time, but only 48 possessions) and when Jordan Clarkson runs with the bench mob in Sexton’s spot (+70.1, 45 possessions). If anything remotely like that holds over a big chunk of the season, we might see more crossover from Sexton and Clarkson.
been pretty obvious they are better with Sexton over Clarkson size be damned
The goal, at least for now, is likely more about seeing what the Jazz have and fomenting development (https://saltcityhoops.com/what-matters-most-to-transitioning-jazz-part-2-development-identity/), rather than losing or (gasp!) winning games. Folks with knowledge of how the front office is thinking say that the Jazz feel like this early success gives them more options, not fewer. They still have more unprotected picks than anybody and they have a bunch of capable players whose stock has likely risen with Utah’s head-turning start.
the best picks are the Jazz losing a lot though

Everyone in Jazzland was probably wondering the same thing after the departure of Udoka in Boston. Every report about Hardy was that he was a major part of what the Celtics did in Boston and, had he stayed in Boston, there’s no doubt he’d be head coach there.
and he'd probably be trying to not to change much in Boston. Here he was able to do whatever he wanted.
Mark it down as another early season W for the 10-win Jazz when so few were expected at this juncture. They appear to have replaced an eight-year fixture like Snyder with the right hire.
any new hire was a win. COTM should have gone after the bubble. Might still have Gobert
Now, with so many different paths the front office can take, one thing is clear, they need to find the right championship pieces for the roster. If they can do that, it’s clear that Hardy is the coach that can take them all the way.
it's not clear. Sloan and COTM were great hires in the beginning. Once a coach gets comfortable he doesn't change. That's what has been great about Hardy. He's up for anything. See how he does when he has his stable unit playing for something big. Look forward to it!
