Well its the details of the study that are important here; otherwise you'll over-generalize the results. Basically they asked people to rate their "Greatest Fears," and overall, participants ranked "Public Speaking" as more terrifying/frightening/etc than death, and a bunch of other events/activities that you'd expect to be worse.
Does that mean if you gave an individual person with a forced choice between two options like--
A) DEATH BY EXECUTION or B) SPEAK IN FRONT OF A LARGE CROWD FOR 5 MINUTES
--that they would choose DEATH? Not Likely.
It simply reflects that people fear public speaking more than death (and other things) when you give them a chance to think about how bad it would be. It does not mean they would rather die than give a presentation!
