some of the scenes just didn't work, some were too short and others were to long. there was one where you see mandela dancing with a woman and telling her she was beautiful and it changes to a 4 second scene where we see the head security guy sleeping on a bed. what was the point of either of them?
morgan freeman did a good job as usual but matt damon was a little stiff, he's also 10 years old than francois was at the time too (it wasn't that obvious, but as a rugby fan i could tell).
I think that the point of the scene was to show that Mandela was exerting himself so much that his bodyguard, 40 years his junior, was asleep. The next scene, which shows Mandela collapsed outside his house seems to support this interpretation.
