Re: Fox News Ask Are Hip-Hop and Rap Music Going Out of Style?
Yeah, hip hop needs to change because its audience is changing. Folk who listened to hip hop since its inception have a very different view of hip hop than the youngsters whose memories of hip hop icons can't go past Tupac, Biggie and Jay-Z. And they have a different view of hip hop because hip hop in general today has become very small-minded and self-limiting compared to hip hop up up to the late '90s. Intellectual/Conscious rap is now considered underground, and it's shame. Even though I've put my money into only Christian Rap since '96, I could at least respect dudes like Common and Mos Def and Talib, X Clan, Just-Ice, Jungle Brothers(list goes on) for not limiting their subject matter to guns, money, sex and drugs.
