Default Yi Jianlian to invoke his own clause and head back to the NBA

With the NBA lockout now officially over, Yi Jianlian’s stay in the CBA is also over.

As expected, Yi is taking full advantage of his specially made “Yi Jianlian Clause” to return to the United States in an attempt to sign on with a team. The news has been made official by Guangdong Hongyuan’s official Sina Weibo feed.

The clause, which was created specifically for Yi so that he could go back to the NBA once the lockout ended, is the only one of its kind in the CBA. Because Yi holds a Chinese passport, he can be registered as a domestic player, which puts him under a different set of rules and regulations than foreign players, all of whom are contractually obligated to play a full season.

According to Guangdong’s Weibo feed, Yi, who sprained his MCL in a game last week against Beijing, will rest in China for about a week before flying over to the U.S. NBA training camps officially start on December 9th.

In the three full games with Guangdong, Yi averaged 16.6 points and 10.3 rebounds.

Interesting.
