Maryland QB C.J. Brown tears ACL, out for season

Maryland announced Wednesday that starting quarterback C.J. Brown suffered a torn ACL in his right knee and will be out for the season. He suffered the injury Tuesday night in a non-contact drill.

“I feel terrible for C.J.,” coach Randy Edsall said in the release. “He's worked incredibly hard to be the starting quarterback of this team. He's stepped up and been a tremendous leader. We'll do everything we can to make sure he gets the best treatment to help in his recovery.”

Edsall said Wednesday that the injury occurred during a two-minute drill. Brown broke through the pocket, and as he was running downfield, he injured his knee making a cut.

“To see the work that he's put in for this season to go away with one cut in a non-contact drill, a cut that he's made thousands of times, is just devastating,” Edsall said.

Brown started five games for Maryland last year. He threw for 842 yards with seven touchdowns and six interceptions. Brown was the team's second leading rusher with 574 yards and five rushing touchdowns.

True freshman quarterback Perry Hills will work with the first team while true freshman Caleb Rowe will work with the second team. Edsall said Tuesday that he likes Hills' command of the offense and his lack of mental mistakes.

“We thought that they were outstanding football players who would have the opportunity at some point in time in their career to help the University of Maryland win football games,” Edsall said. “It just so happens that that opportunity is going to come this year in their freshman year.”

Redshirt sophomore wide receiver Devin Burns will be the team's third string quarterback. Edsall said Burns approached him about the move on Wednesday before the news came out about the severity of Brown's injury. Burns played quarterback during his redshirt season in 2010.

“The excitement that we have and the kind of practices that we've been having the last few days and the things that are taking place, [Brown's injury] hasn't dampered anything,” Edsall said. “We're disappointed and we're upset that this injury has occurred to C.J., but none of the expectations or the enthusiasm, the excitement that we have for this season has been taken away from us.”
