Games like GTA V, The Last of Us, Watch Dogs, Tomb Raider have a chance to be the cream of the crop titles. All are AAA games. I am so confused as to how 2012 was better.
God of War is a monumental trilogy, same with Gears of War. Tomb Raider just looks spectacular. Then you have ambitious titles like Two Souls and Remember Me. I know Ground Zeroes and Agent (if released this year) will be revolutionary titles. Then you have possibly the most anticipated title of all-time (for modern consoles) in GTA V. The Last of Us being a strong GOTY candidate and is developed by the same team that (in my opinion) already created the best game of All-Time (U2 & U3). Patriots looks phenomenal as a shooter due to its incredible animations & Blacklist looks like the most fun Splinter Cell game to date.
Then you have another AAA game in Dead Space; Metro & BioShock.
Come on dude, you're joking right?
You have three of the most succesful trilogies in modern gaming history releasing a new title; plus Rockstar dropping two titles and Naughty Dog releasing a game. That alone triumphs anything 2012 has done.
Honestly, I bought Absolution, NBA 2K13, AC 3, Halo 4 and Black Ops 2 this year. I have never bought so few games. They were all great but nothing spectacular. Certainly none of them were on Skyrim, Uncharted 3 or Arkham City's level of 2011.
Halo is definitely a bigger franchise than GTA
I don't even have to like it that much to realize that. Not saying GTA isn't a HUGE favorite in it's own right, I just know that people buy Xboxes solely based on Halo as it's M$ only real exclusive. (Gears exclusivity expires after the next game is released)
Then Tomb Raider hasn't been good since Darkness. BioShock had a terrific first outing, but the second one sucked major balls. I'm not a big Dead Space fan, so I'm not gonna talk on that. Which is my major thing with next year's game. I feel like IT COULD be better than this year(but doubtful) because two of the series need to be completely revitalized. We haven't seen anything from Agent. Pretty much nothing with Rainbow Six. Kind of the same with Splinter Cell, I like it, it's good. I usually enjoy them. But I feel like the latest editions have definitely been weaker. Not nearly as bad as Bioshock 2 was
But definitely a mild concern.
And trilogies ending>start of new games series. both GoW games IMO are kind of being milked at this point. I loved Gears, still do. Probably my favorite shooter of all time (judge me!) But honestly, I feel like it needs a break for a few years. Same with God Of War. (although too a far far lesser extent)
Mass Effect, Halo, AC, ( I don't really count 2k/COD since there's a new edition every year) Transformers FoC was another terrific game you may have missed the campaign alone is worth a rental. Prototype 2, Dishonored,
Then some let down games like FF XIII-2, Resident Evil 6, Fable 3, And we still have Far Cry 3
Maybe we just view games differently and that could be it though.
