I don't know if you can really say something like "his days with Real Madrid were considered a failure" based on the success of Real Madrid as a team.
Beckham never was instrumental to Real Madrid's success, but he was never supposed to be either. He was a good starting caliber player, but never one of the premier players in the world or anything.
