Well, North Korean citizens really feel like they live in a socialist paradise of some sort because they're never told anything else. To them, absolutely nothing is wrong because they have nothing to compare their situation to.
Food shortages and all that...easy to cover-up and deal with when your vision of reality is that the rest of the world suffers worse than you do.
