The best way to improve recording quality is to a get a good microphone and a REAL SOUND card made for recording, not just a sound card made for computer gaming. You need to shop for these at a musicians store, not a computer store.

This will be way more noticeable than the different softwares, but I know that the Sony tools are professional quality and even the lost-cow Studio line shares the same output quality with the full-featured Pro versions.
