Default Blazers suffer another painful loss as Wesley Matthews' last-second three misses

As Wesley Matthews’ high-arcing corner three-pointer floated in the air, the final horn sounded at New Orleans Arena and the Trail Blazers’ bench was poised to sprint toward the opposite corner for a celebratory dog pile.

“We were all about to run at you,” Eric Maynor told Matthews later. “The shot looked good.”

But Matthews’ jumper fell down from the sky and bounced off the back of the iron and the Blazers’ playoffs chances bounced away with it, his last-second brick serving as a fitting moment to a trip of wasted opportunities and shattered hopes.

The Blazers lost to the New Orleans Hornets 98-96 Sunday night before 15,036. The same group of players that obliterated the best team in the Western Conference two days prior fell to the worst team in the Western Conference, offering another chapter to that same old Jekyll and Hyde novel.
