He could still be in the NBA if he wanted to. He is probably making as much money being one of the top players in Euroleague than he could being a back-up in the NBA. He is only 26 so he could still come back to the NBA, he probably just wants to pad his resume by being one of the top Euroleague players.
You underestimate Euroleague. The top Euroleague players are as good as NBA back-ups so you will see more NBA back-ups (Farmar, Weems, Fernandez, etc...) going back and forth between the NBA and Euroleague.
