America is going to need factories and it's going to need jobs
AI is coming for a lot of jobs. Entry level jobs, admin jobs, tech jobs, design jobs, media jobs, white collar jobs, etc.
What America is going to need is blue collar workers. Lots of them. Unfortunately I don't think everyone is capable of learning a skilled trade. We're going to need more auto factories, clothes factories... all of it.

Re: America is going to need factories and it's going to need jobs
While I agree largely with the premise, it’s for different reasons.
The AI is coming for jobs is wildly overstated at the moment. Much like when Microsoft and the internet came around, there was a drastic shift but we didn’t all of sudden see a cut of people working in the corporate world in half. Secretaries and paper-pushers were just forced to adapt their skills and redirect to certain areas. Same will happen here I think. With the power of AI able to handle certain functions, companies will then shift focus to improving deliverability, opening up new lanes that we probably haven’t quite seen yet. Entry level folks in particular will have their finger on the pulse of these areas, whatever they may be.

I think that areas of national security must be encouraged (through tariffs/subsidies) to be manufactured here in the US: antibiotics/drugs, food, computer chips, rare minerals, etc.
As far as other stuff like clothes, toys, trinkets, I think we should again use tariffs for geo-political advantage. Put highest tariffs on China, lower on India (so they will catch up and be a neighborly threat to China) and the lowest tariffs on Vietnam, Cambodia (countries that are not a threat to the US).
I don't think the AI threat is over-stated. It is EXPOTENTIALLY improving and will displace jobs MUCH faster than people (especially older ones) can adjust. I don't think that college/high schools are doing anything in particular to prepare the young for AI either - should we just depend on self-initiative of the few to use AI? Entry level white collar jobs are being affected most - with AI replacing what they used to do. How are our new college grads to get a foot in or learn the skills normally acquired at this level?

Re: America is going to need factories and it's going to need jobs
I was disappointed that this Big Beautiful Bill did not address a national framework for AI - that means there'll be a patchwork of laws by state. This is especially concerning because Silicon Valley is in California - and who knows what crazy, nutty laws CA will pass? AI is a matter of national security - it should not be left to the states.
IMO, it is essential that the US win the AI war (over China) - both economically and militarily.

Utilizing the internet wasn’t part of high school or college curriculum at the time either. It’s far more interwoven into our fabric as we operate than that, as AI soon will be. And perhaps already is with kids.
I don’t think that reading upside down, poorly handwritten documents, or other various mundane things that AI can now do is “skills acquired” in a necessary way. Like many stupid first jobs were.
I think because of all the stupid bullshit new grads used to have to do for $14 an hour going by the wayside means now newer folks will be thrown into the fire and come out far more skilled than before. Again, don’t know exactly which areas will take off from this (although there WILL be new avenues), but it’s safe to say we’ve been through these types of events before and have figured out how to adapt and improve productivity.

It's a bit different this time, and the reason is because all past technologies, including the conventional internet, still required humans to operate them.
Cars replaced horse n carriages but every cab still needed a driver. The lawn mower is invented, you still need someone running it. New medical discoveries require doctors to apply a diagnosis.
What new jobs do driverless cars create? Or autonomous roomba lawnmowers? Or doctor AI, or legal AI that can consult round the clock and has endless time to give?
Autonomous entities are not new tools, theyre new agents. They dont supplement humans, they replace them. It's an unprecedented inflection point in history.
Youre right about new jobs for AI technicians and such. But people with those skills are very limited. Most people will be disrupted. Bigly. And out of work masses create chaos. No point allowing more unskilled people here pursuing work driving cabs or mowing lawns or flipping burgers. Theyre being replaced SOON. What automation still cant do yet, farm work and hotel maid service, got immigration exemptions. But in general jobs will shrink. Oh, and teachers. Tens of thousands of teachers will be replaced. Hence bye bye Education Department.
Trump's policies are not just being pulled out his ass. They are existential issues people in the intelligentsia have been predicting for over a decade. Lot of Americans themselves are going to need work. They pity the illegal/deported now, but wait til theyre competing with them for precious few labor jobs or else going hungry.
Just be glad youre here. It's going to get much more dire in the third world with fewer people sending back money to already meager economies. And no more US aid because developing poor countries no longer benefits us. Lotta countries headed back to the stone age, for real. Lets hope Taco Man doesnt lose track of his US passport

The US needs a cogent national framework for AI. They also need to fast-track all avenues to produce more energy (this is an area where China is way ahead of us). Forget these environmental crazies where energy and rare earth minerals are concerned.

And Republicans need to codify it before the Dems come in and put their inevitable restrictions on AI. Repubs should take the lead in this area with the advice from David Sacks, Elon, Thiel, etc.

AI will be a much bigger impact because it can literally replace jobs, compared to the internet that was only a tool to make workers more effective. My firm just let a ton of people go because you can hire entire Indian firms for $250k/ year(no more language barriers when ChatGPT can just ‘write it better’) and why pay a 15-20 year guy $450k when you can pay a fresh CFA 80k and ai makes up for the gap in experience and expertise? The internet was a tool to spread information and make knowledge accessible, which is huge, but it wasn’t creating new research by itself like AI is. China’s nuclear plants have been innovating with research aided by AI, AI is innovating medicine and surgery, and most importantly AI is advancing AI research; so all of this is just going to snowball.

Re: America is going to need factories and it's going to need jobs
UBI is coming. And it should not be feared. We will have no choice. White collar jobs will be phased out first, and then blue collar with robotics. Everyone needs to understand, that it has always been humanity's working goal to get to a place where there is no work. And that is what it will be.
The question is though, how bad will things get before we make the big change? It could be a very long and painful transition.

UBI is coming and it should not be feared.... It's only going to be a living hell to get to that point.... but have no fear because out of all that chaos, Socialism will restore order.

The way I think it will play out is very lengthy, over many years, with some industries being hit much harder than others. And others not being hit at all.
Luckily, it will not be a case of AI suddenly replacing all jobs all at once causing mass chaos and hell. It will be a case of AI slowly taking out one sector at a time. And I think what will happen is that once unemployment hits a really bad spot, like 25% or so, then society will say "okay we have to implement UBI there is no other option". And then that will be that.
UBI is not really socialism btw.

So the government decides how much money everyone receives?
That sounds like hell to me, but by all means you're free to keep wishing.

It’s a weird fantasy from losers who have no real smarts or skills like our resident coper Bill Gaytes.
Something tells me he’s been on the Goverment Cheese for along time now and he’s fantasizing about a wack reality where everyone is as helpless and pathetic as him.
It’s a weird coping strategy.
