Kings sign Ty Lawson

InsideHoops.com, August 31, 2016

The Kings officially signed free agent guard Ty Lawson today.

Entering his eighth NBA campaign, Lawson has accrued career averages of 13.1 points (.461 FG%, .366 3pt%, .766 FT%), 2.8 rebounds and 6.2 assists in 29.8 minutes per game in 482 contests (320 starts) with the Denver Nuggets (2009-10 – 2014-15) before splitting the 2015-16 season with the Houston Rockets and Indiana Pacers. Lawson made four consecutive playoff appearances to start his career in Denver and five total visits to the postseason during his first seven seasons. His 2,982 career assists rank 10th in the league since he was selected 18th overall in the 2009 NBA Draft out of North Carolina.

The Tar Heel standout enjoyed a three-year collegiate career capped by an NCAA Championship in 2009, earning second-team All-American honors and the Bob Cousy Award bestowed on the nation’s top point guard. Lawson still ranks second all-time in North Carolina annals in career assist-to-turnover ratio (2.78) and third in single-season three-point percentage (.472).

It'll be interesting to see who on the Kings starts at point guard this upcoming season. It may be Lawson, but our guess is that it'll initially be Darren Collison, who averaged 14.0 points (49% FG) and 4.3 assists in 30.0 minutes per game last season. This will be Collison's third year on the Kings. He mostly came off the bench last season behind Rajon Rondo, who signed with the Bulls as a free agent this summer.
