It's a start, but doesn't solve the Favors problem, or the utter lack of 3 point shooting from the PG position. Rubio is either red hot or ice cold and Exum doesn't ever really get above slightly toasty at best.

Yeah Snyder will like Korver more than he ever liked Burks but rather that's a good thing remains to be seen. Sloan loved Korver too much when he was coach. I imagine he is very happy too. Burks is the only guy other than Mitchell that can create his own shot and it's something they will miss though it was rarely utilized. They become older and less athletic as well. Having Korver or Ingles in the game at all times should help with the spacing though and that is their biggest issue for sure. Snyder helped Korver a lot in Atlanta and it says 3 assistants have coached Kyle as well. He should fit in quickly I imagine.

The defense could suffer though Snyder never thought much of Alec at that end. Rubio looks unstoppable or horrid. No in between. It's really hard to understand. Has to be something mental. Snyder needs to bench him when he doesn't gave it going though. That has killed them the last two years. Exum at least plays good D but he can't shoot from anywhere. Good to see Snyder bench him the past couple games but the Rubio/Exum lineups have to stop! Neto helps rather he continues to play or not who knows.

Thabo and Niang need to be in the mix somehow too. Thabo shot well last year and was one of their best players.Defense and cutting and rebounding. Niang might be their best shooter and most skilled player. He needs a longer leash. I think he'll be better than Ingles eventually. Allen needs to go to the G-league. Favors needs to go to back-up center. Lindsey needs to do more still!

With his solid production, Neto could be taking more and more minutes from Dante Exum, too. Exum played just seven minutes and turned the ball over three times in that span.

Rubio needs to lose minutes as well if he isn't playing well. It kills them!

Also, shoutout to Derrick Favors who posted no words in his tweet, simply the link to AB’s infamous dunk years ago.

It's right after that he broke his ankle. Maybe the next game. People were arguing over rather that was a dunk or not and I got the feeling he was trying to prove something when he got hurt. He actually did something similar recently! Cavs fans will love him!

nope.
Not an upgrade at all.

We need a change and more scoring options but AB has a lot more scoring versatility than Korver.. also a better playmaker.

Also not a "bit" of an overpay.. It’s a HUGE overpay, TWO draft picks AND a younger more dynamic player vs someone Cleveland doesn’t want anymore..

What the hell is this?!!

Posted by spazzed on Nov 29, 2018 | 8:45 AM

Looks like a lot of it is that they dropped salary which could help with a future move before the deadline. Also got the trade exception which could bring in something decent. See what else happens before we can fully judge this one

On another sad note, my man Dante might become 3rd string PG with the way Neto played last night. I wish Dante could get it together. Please Dante, figure it out!!

Posted by JMBDog on Nov 29, 2018 | 9:18 AM

Dante is still playing. Snyder seems to like him more as a secondary playmaker at the 2 or 3. Rubio/Dante should never happen though and it's becoming a thing!

I also think this puts Dante in the hot seat. Korver and Neto can soak up all of his minutes if he doesn’t start figuring things out. The trade itself is fine, AB has never been fully utilized here, and he’s never really fit into any Jazz system. He’s going to be great on the Cavs. Korver can come in and steal minutes from players not playing hard enough, so its going to help the team in more ways than one.

Posted by McDeen on Nov 29, 2018 | 9:42 AM

Exum is untradable. He will play. Coach has never been much of a Neto fan either. Rubio is the one that needs to be benched if he's sucking!

Good point. I saw some people complaining about 2nd-round picks and citing Rudy Gobert (first founder) and Jokic as evidence to not trade 2nd rounders. But all the other second-round picks who don’t pan out far outweigh those that miraculously do.

Posted by Karl Stalone 32 on Nov 29, 2018 | 10:09 AM

Definitely good players in the 2nd round especially high 2nd rounders which they could be especially the Washington on the way their franchise looks now. The Gleague will make those more valuable too once the Stars have a full roster of Jazz guys. I'd guess they could add a 3rd or 4th round even

The Jazz' second round picks since 2006
Dee Brown
Herbert Hill
Tadija Dragicevic
Ante Tomic
Goran Suton
Jeremy Evans
Kevin Murphy
Erick Green
Jarnell Stokes
Dani Diez
Olivier Hanlan
Tyrone Wallace
Joel Bolomboy
Isaiah Whitehead
Nigel Williams-Goss

Tomic was good. Too bad he never played here. Evans was good that one year. If he could have only extended his game out to the 3. Gree looked good in his brief stint here. Hanlan looked good in his 2nd summer league. Wallace is good, Gave him away! Bolomboy looked good too. Goss might still be playing here. Ine of the best players on a tp team in Greece/Euroleague. Neto is a player!

Grayson Allen was kind of amazing during preseason play. Over five exhibition bouts, he averaged nearly 13 points per game and shot a blistering 51 percent from the field and 52 percent from 3-point range.

If you actually watched he wasn't ready though and that's only become more apparent. That's not a knock on him. Most rookies aren't ready until later on in their rookie years if that. He should be in the Gleague. Go down there and dominate and help later on in the year. Why would that be such a big deal? :wtf:

Korver called Altman and was informed that he, for the second time in his career, had been traded to Utah. That was good news for the sharpshooter. He enjoyed his previous 2 1/2 seasons with the Jazz. He already knew coach Quin Snyder from his days in Atlanta. And he knew that it would be a good place for his family. Oh, and the team wasn't bad either.

But the team is bad. If it wasn't the trade wouldn't have been made!

The Jazz are shooting 33 percent on open 3-point shots (shots where an opponent is 4 or more feet away), per NBA.com. Korver is hitting 43 percent of such looks (and 46 percent on all 3-pointers). His presence on the court will create a gravity and defenders will always have to pay attention to where he is. That should open things up for the rest of the Jazz offense.

We'll see. Likely that Rubio or Exum are still on the court at all times so it's still at worst 5 guys guarding 4

Haven't watched the game yet, but Charlotte are massively hot and cold from what I've watched this year. Their last game against the Bucks a few days ago, got spanked massively in the 1st quarter, tightened up their D in the 2nd and 3rd and started hitting their shots, then ran nothing but Tony Parker ISO plays in the 4th because no one besides from Kemba can create any offence. Hung on for a tight win, but were 25 odd up halfway through the 3rd.

That include the one in the NFL that he won't acknowledge?

I have seen mention that Quin’s offense is too complicated. Is the complexity of the offense causing our losses?

Ricky has a low iq for sure. He runs around like a chicken without its head. He plays big minutes regardless. That's the biggest problem now that he's benched Exum and almost benched Favors. Niang still not dressing because he didn't go to Duke is a joke too!

It took Ricky Rubio six months to learn- a point guard who has an excellent feel for the game who was always known to help make the game easier on his teammate, leader in assists, beautiful passer, but even he can’t get a handle on it.

Been more than a year. Despite his reputation I'd say he has a very low basketball iq. Makes some great passes and also the worst you will ever see

Jazz offense is ranked 27th in the league- no matter the open looks its not working.

I'd start with the personnel. Ricky, Exum and Favors. Replace them with Niang. Neto and Thabo and things instantly get better. More shooting. Better fits. Better players. Favors can be the 18 million dollar back-up to Rudy

Biggest surprise for me this year is how little the Jazz are getting from their bench
For a team that was supposed to be really deep, the bench has been very underwhelming, especially if we consider Crowder a semi-starter.

The most used lineup (Rubio-Mitchell-Ingles-Crowder-Gobert) is still working great. Of 16 5-man-lineups that have played over 150 minutes this season, it has the second best net rating in the league, only behind Toronto. It also has the 2nd best offensive rating of those, so they are scoring just fine.

Posted by besteiro on Dec 3, 2018 | 8:47 AM

They were never deep especially with Snyder setting the lineups and rotations. We hear it every year and they haven't been deep since the Corbin/Millsap days. Rubio is a backup at best and I'd prefer Neto. Exum is an end of the bench defensive specialist. Niang is one of their top 3 shooters and probably the most skilled guy on the team and he doesn't dress. Allen should be in the Gleague with Exum. ONeale has been disappointing but I think he is salvageable. Put the right guys out there and they have a nice rotation if healthy. Injuries could help if it was the sucky 3.

Looking ahead to the Jazz schedule
I think the key will be to sneak their way to 2,3 maybe 4 games above .500 heading into the all-star break. The schedule post all-star break is very winnable with 11 games vs. teams currently below .500 and 4 against teams at or 1 game above .500 and plenty of opportunities against teams that should be within reach in the standings as well. There is certainly a chance there to go something like 18-7 to finish the season. That should put you at 48 wins and right there in the thick of 6-9 or so seed.

Posted by Ricky02 on Dec 3, 2018 | 10:58 AM

I could really care less if Rubio and Favors are still on the team and Exum is in the rotation. It's hard to watch the mess!

Mitchell
If you learn anything from Wade. Learn how to make a living at the charity stripe. You are not Steph Curry stop chucking so many 3’s. Drive to the basket and either get to the line or dish off to Gobert got an assist. Make plays.

The more immediate question, to me, is whether Phoenix can find a workable trade for Trevor Ariza after Dec. 15. As I reported earlier Tuesday, rival teams expect Ariza to be shopped hard once that date arrives, since that’s when players who signed new contracts in July become eligible to be traded. Ariza, remember, joined the Suns on a one-year, $15 million deal, but they clearly don’t need his veteran presence as much as contenders would given how Phoenix’s season is playing out. The prudent course is testing the market to see what the Suns can get for him. – via New York Times

That leaves Burks. His contract may have more value than what he brings on the court. Although performances like the one he had in Brooklyn certainly point the other way. After the game Burks was asked if Cleveland is where he wants to be. “Hopefully. That’s not up to me,” Burks said. “We will see what happens.” – via Cleveland Plain Dealer

I thought Ariza had a multie year deal. Igor like Exum?

It could partly be up to you Alec. They always say this! Sounds like he might get moved again

Although, during that period they’ve had the 17th best defense. Korver will continue to shoot the three well but the Jazz still have a defense issue. If they can shore that up, and play the same elite level defense from last year, there’s no reason they can’t surprise people in December.

They were expected to big good and now they are surprising people! :lol

January 15th is shaping up to be a busy day for the NBA. A lot of players will be eligible for trade and, at that point, it will be a little clearer who will be making a playoff push and who will be having a fire sale.

Dec 15. Favors is January unfortunately. What a horrible contract but not as bad as Exum's! :wtf:

What do you think, Dunkers? Is Trevor Ariza a player worth going after?

Well duh! Imagine Gobert/Ariza/Ingles/Crowder/Mitchell with Bradley/Niang/Korver/O'Neale/Exum(yikes!). Rather have Neto but we know he's gone eventually same with Thabo and Udoh. Hopefully Favors and Rubio. Maybe Goss next year to replace Exum

He’s also putting up nice numbers including 13.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 26 minutes per game. His percentages have gone down but over those three games he’s a +15!

Imagine that. He's a great 6th man.

Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert appear to be enjoying the extra spacing. Donovan Mitchell had many more catch and shoot opportunities and capitalized on those. He finished with 20 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Donovan Mitchell shot 7 of 13 from the field and was just efficent.

He was also suspended for the first five games after testing positive for marijuana. Sefolosha said he used it for pain management, but also doesn’t run from the fact that he was wrong. When news of the suspension surfaced last spring, Sefolosha had a conversation with Lindsey. The contents of that talk have been kept private, but sources say the Jazz showed a level of understanding to what Sefolosha was enduring at the time. “It’s definitely not something I want to endorse in any kind of way,” Sefolosha said. “I know that I had to own up to it. There were no excuses. I know I have young fans and I know that it’s a terrible thing for young people to do. I did what I did, and I have to deal with the consequences.” – via The Athletic

Sefolosha’s one of the smartest athletes in the NBA, a grounded, well-traveled dude with a thoughtful opinion on most social matters. His experiences through his time in the league have motivated him to have a voice and to use that voice. It’s something he doesn’t take lightly. “I feel like if athletes have a platform, they should use it,” Sefolosha said. “I never liked injustice. When I see it and when I experience it, I feel like I have to fight against it in my own way. This is a country where there’s a lot going on. You see the best of the best and the worst of the worst.” – via The Athletic

Derrick Favors was amazing tonight. Playing fantastic defense while scoring 24 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. He was hyper efficient from the field, shooting 10-13 (77% FG%). Derrick Favors has sacrificed a ton this season. He has played out of position, been taking less minutes, and he STILL comes in ready to play big in moments like this.

Upon moving to the 801 in 1979, the Jazz ditched the purple road uniforms of their New Orleans days for green duds with gold and white accents. It was during that green-shirt era of Jazz basketball that I first took note of the team; way back when Adrian Dantley and Rickey Green pushed it to new heights.

This is going to be a short fanpost/rant, I seriously think that the Jazz either try to play to their strength, or just tank and blow this whole season up. We're 10th in 3 points attempted per game, yet 29th in 3 point percentage. I know analytics in recent times have suggested that the most efficient way to score is either the layup of the 3, but you can't force players who can't shoot the 3 to ya know....shoot the 3. They're going to miss.

Or if you want to play that way you get shooters instead of bringing back the same guys minus one shooter :facepalm

Of course, there's reason to believe last year was an outlier and the Jazz just suck. I mean they can't even hit their freethrows, we're second in FTA but 27th in FT%. This is a sad thought, and I feel like we should do a quick rebuild around Donovan to throw more shooters and capable scorers around him so he won't leave like every star player has from Utah in recent years.

And other than Exum's contract they are in a good position to revamp things. They won't

Some fire also needs to be poured on Quin as he has done almost nothing to the lineup thus far. It's like Scott Brooks with OKC back in the day, they both knew the starting lineup was not the best lineup they could field, yet they keep doing it. If the gameplan ain't working and the team sucks, maybe try to change it instead of constantly pushing continuity? If a miracle like what happened last year doesn't happen, the coaching staff should take a lot of flack for doing jack all when the signs were all there.

Quin and Lindsey who everyone thinks is a genius. He built this roster. Starts with him

First, we need to look at the role Burks was serving for the Jazz this year. Burks was a bench scorer, and had an expiring contract. By dealing him, the Jazz were able to shed $11.5 million off the Jazz salary cap this season. Truthfully, Burks' contract was more valuable than his production to the team.

The main reason is because Snyder didn't ike him. Thabo and Neto would be next up. Like Burks they could use those guys so we'll see how that goes. Neto is Rudy's BFF so that complicates that one

Both better than what the Jazz have. They might take some combo of Thabo/Neto/Udoh as depth pieces? Looks like they aren't that deep but maybe they think they are like the Jazz do? Not sure they need Rubio or Favors. They have TJ Leaf who worked out for the Jazz last year like Mitchell even though he wasn't in the Jazz range.

The Utah Jazz are one of the teams interested in Parker, according to multiple league sources. Derrick Favors is an awkward fit next to center Rudy Gobert, and his $16.9 million on the books for next season is non-guaranteed, meaning he could be one of the pieces involved. Favors can’t be traded until January 15, so Chicago would have to wait. Would it be worth it? The Bulls are loaded with young bigs, so it’s hard to see them taking back Favors unless additional assets are included. Utah has all of its future picks, except for a 2020 second-rounder going to the Cavaliers, and has two other seconds incoming. – via The Ringer

The end was absolutely messy. But Deron Williams was one of my favorite Jazzmen of all time. I’m glad he’s starting to be truly forgiven and is actually highlighted by the Jazz as ever playing in Utah. I don’t know if he’ll ever play a role for the Jazz, but worst case scenario hopefully he can be a good reference for people considering signing here.

Worst case is his number needs to go up

The Jazz take some of the most open 3’s in the league. But they are in the bottom 10 in terms of open 3 point percentage. Will that eventually trend in the right direction, or are the Jazz open for a reason? I think there’s a case to be made for both situations.

There's only one case to be made and it's not because of Snyder's brilliance that they are open Thabo was the best shooter on the floor at one point last night!

Rubio is not a good fit for our team. He is wildly inconsistent and turns the ball over way too much. We could use a more scoring oriented guard like Kemba or Dame. If we had scoring from both guards we could afford to keep Favors at PF.

But it seems Rubio is always safe.

Were the Jazz to try to trade for Russell, they could go a few different routes. They could try to swap expiring deals. In this one, we get Russell and the Junkyard Dog (DeMarre Carroll), and they get Rubio, Thabo, and Royce O'Neale. The Nets likely only do this if they think Russell is for sure leaving, and they like O'Neale. The Jazz would probably have to add a lottery protected first round pick.

No thanks. Never been impressed with him.

The last option is one that I can't do on the trade machine because Exum is not able to be traded yet. Exum for Russell and any one of their many players on 1-2 MIL deals would work financially. The Jazz would definitely have to package a first rounder with this, but Brooklyn may want to roll the dice on Exum if they don't think Russell will stay.

The good news for the Jazz is that they have the fourth-easiest remaining schedule in the NBA and the easiest among Western Conference teams. In fact, they are the only Western team to have one of the top 10 easiest schedules as Eastern teams obviously have more games to play in the weaker conference.

So what will be the excuses now? There's only about 6 bad teams right now and 5 are in the east so I'm not sure easy is really that easy besides the fact that they are a better road team :lol

Gobert has seemingly regained the edge he possessed last season when he won NBA Defensive Player of the Year honors. His attitude and energy is spreading to his teammates and turning the Jazz into a nightmare matchup for most opponents once again.

Don't think he ever lost it. Like Quin said it has more to do with his teammates helping him so he doesn't have to overextend himself. Also the offense is better which was a big part of their problems on D

Utah (17-18) won for the fifth time in their last six home games while shooting 55 percent from the floor. The Jazz have won 10 of 11 games this season where they have shot 50 percent or better as a team.

Imagine that. They are good when they shoot well. Too bad the Wizard and coty don't think they need shooters

At the head of that ball movement on the offensive end is point guard Ricky Rubio, who has been a pass-first guard for the entirety of his career. Rubio will be the most important piece to follow when it comes to how the Jazz offense is flowing and whether they are ultimately able to spread the ball on Tuesday.

That much was clear from nearly the beginning. Early on in the game, Simmons found Jimmy Butler for an alley-oop dunk against a set Utah defense. That wasn't just a one-time slip, either: Butler got free time and time again for easy backdoor cuts. That was just one of many problems for the Jazz's defense.
