Spurs to sign Darryl Watkins, former Syracuse Center
Spurs will sign undrafted, free-agent center this week
Thursday, September 11, 2008
Darryl Watkins, the former Syracuse University center, is set to sign a two-year deal with the San Antonio Spurs, according to his agent.
Reggie Brown, of Chicago-based Priority Sports, said that Watkins would sign the deal with the Spurs within the next few days. The contract is partially guaranteed.
Watkins, a 6-foot-11 center, was undrafted after his senior season at Syracuse. He signed with the Sacramento Kings as a free agent prior to the 2007-08 season.
He played in nine games for the Kings before being released. He split the rest of the season with the Los Angeles D-Fenders and the Iowa Energy of the NBA's Development League.
Known primarily for his defense, Watkins was used as a backup for his first two seasons in college. Watkins became Syracuse's starting center in his junior year. He registered 99 blocks that season, and ranked 16th in Division I blocked shots per game (2.8). He finished the season averaging 7.1 points and 7.3 rebounds. A first-team all-state pick as a senior, Watkins was a four-time all-county selection and earned all-area his final two seasons.
Never heard of the kid. Discuss.

Re: Spurs to sign Darryl Watkins, former Syracuse Center
I saw a very short video of him on SpursReport, and he looks pretty athletic. He's a good defender too, filling a couple of needs. Right now I doubt he'll see playing time, but if he sticks to our NBDL squad or makes the 15-man roster, he could help in the future. I also read on SR that we're bringing Devin Green (played in Summer League) and Desmon Farmer (who I've never heard of), who averaged 24.7 PPG in D-League last year.
