Ricky Rubio Wont Play For A "Bad" Franchise

I saw Rubio in Spain last week for an upcoming story in Sports Illustrated. During an extended interview at their home, his parents said Rubio would take his name out of the draft to avoid landing with a "bad" franchise -- one that offers a negative future to their son.

Is Memphis, which holds the No. 2 pick in the June 25 draft, one of those "bad" teams? The Grizzlies play in a small market with little support; they've slashed payroll and -- as the Rubio family knows well -- they gave away fellow Spaniard Pau Gasol in a controversial salary dump to the Lakers. (In all fairness, the dynamics of that Gasol deal are likely to be duplicated many more times this summer by other teams needing to reduce payroll. The Grizzlies merely were ahead of the curve.)

Rubio is not worth the 2nd pick anyway... trust me... this guy will not be an all-star in the NBA... he will just be a solid PG on the level of Jose Calderon, Troy Muphy, Rondo (minus the playoff performance) etc... 15 PPG, 9 ASTS middle of the pack guard.

So who does that leave? Sacramento? Golden State? Washington makes sense as far as market and geographic significance, but the franchise has a history of sucking, then getting mediocre, then going back to sucking. Ditto for the Clippers. Oklahoma City is a historically good franchise that looks to be on the rise, but he said that the market's not good enough for him. Who else is left? The Knicks would make sense, but they lack the assets to move up high enough to get him.

I'm sure he'd play for the Wizards...

OKC has Westbrook who will be better... and Memphis wouldn't be wrong to take Hasheem Thabeet, but the Kings would not let him drop that far considering how much of a scrub Beno Udrih is.

Its a shame really...because guys like Rubio playing along side OJ Mayo, and Marc Gasol could really change the face of the Grizzlies franchise, and possibly make it a nice market down there.

Unfortunately we're getting this new wave of players playing hardball on teams, and im suspecting it will cost a lot of franchises to sink soon enough.
