Homgren Out as Browns sale official

New Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, whose takeover of the team was officially approved Tuesday, will name Joe Banner the team's CEO/president and current president Mike Holmgren will depart the organization within 24 hours, sources told ESPN NFL Insider Ed Werder.

Haslem has a news conference scheduled for noon and will announce the Banner move, the sources said. It is unknown if Holmgren's status will be addressed at the news conference.

Haslem will close his deal to buy the Browns with Randy Lerner on Oct. 25 but these changes will take place before then.

Holmgren, the former head coach of the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks, joined the Browns on Jan. 5, 2010. The 64-year-old Holmgren officially had the title of team president. He was instrumental in the hiring of current Browns head coach Pat Shurmur.

Haslam bought the team from Lerner for $1 billion, and the owners voted 32-0 Tuesday to approve the deal. Haslam, who built his fortune with Pilot Flying J truck stops, has been a minority owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, but divested that stock to buy the Browns.

Haslam and Lerner agreed to the sale in August just as training camp was opening. Haslam has said his mission is to bring winning football back to Cleveland; the Browns have made the playoffs once since returning to the NFL in 1999.

although to be fair to Weeden, throw out that first game against philly and he's looked serviceable. still hate the pick though

How about Andy Reid as a wildcard depending on the Eagles season? Eagles dont make it to the SB, his days are numbered in Philly. Joe Banner could bring Andy to town and allow them to turn Cleveland into a relevant football franchise. His success with the Eagles minus Lombardi and Conference title games is well noted. Just a name to consider given how much of a hot seat big Red is on. Tom Heckert is there as well, another Eagles guy from the Reid era.

Pretty sure everyone who roots for the Browns predicted that. Cleaning house and taking out the trash.

well, he had the whole conspiracy thing angle going. going back to what jailblazers said, i think he said that he drafted weeden because he was a lame duck ready to be canned. that or he needed immediate results and it was a desperation play

I actually thought the same thing for some time. However, I also have to admit, as much as I despised that pick and still do only because his age, he has been solid in all but one game and he's actually elevating an offense and a passing game that probably has no business being as good as it is currently playing.

Under previous quarterbacks, from Derek Anderson (aside from '07) through Colt McCoy, we've struggled to score 10 points in a game.

Here's how our offense under the Weeden/Richardson/Gordon regime is doing...

@Bengals 27 points
Bills 13 points
@Ravens 16 points
@Giants 27 points
@Bengals 27 points

Not too shabby. And, his numbers minus the first game are also pretty good considering the circumstances and the weapons surrounding him. All things considered, Weeden and the entire offense, for that matter, has far exceeded expectations so far.

Still... He just turned 29. That hurts. And, yes, it crossed my mind that Holmgren heard of this sale long before most others did and made some rather bold moves on his way out the door.

That doesn't only apply to Weeden. Giving up a 2013 second round draft pick for Josh Gordon was a major controversial move. Right now, it is looking like a good decision because Gordon has all of the talent in the world and that is starting to show. Then, there was also giving up a fourth round pick to move up one spot and get TRich, who would have almost certainly been there at 4 anyway.

There were a lot of 'ballsy' moves near the end and it is clear, in retrospect, Holmgren wasn't going to go down meekly. He wanted to leave an imprint on this franchise and he did. We'll see if it ends up being a positive one or a negative.

It means the Browns franchise continues its search for relevance in the National Football League. With Joe Banner in that means more chances new faces etc etc.

I've never a franchise have so many management/coaching overhauls in such a short time.

Face it, Art Modell carried that franchise and the so called new Cleveland Browns have been garbage since his departure.

Second sentence was a sarcastic post to rile up RBA

Ok.... But I figured, being an Eagles fan and all, you were making a subtle statement about Banner. That is what I was trying to pick up on. Guess I misinterpreted the post.

Not going to rile me up since it is 100-percent accurate.

Anyone here watch A Football Life: Cleveland '95... ? Nearly brought a tear to my eye. We had one of the greatest young coaching staffs ever assembled in terms of talent and what they turned into.

F#cking Modell.
