Nets one-quarter collapse phenomenon
Well just like It's a VC3 pointed out, about more than half of Nets losses this season were resulted from poor play in one particular quarter. It can happen at anytime in 2nd, 3rd or 4th quarter, though recently it occurs mostly in the 2nd and sometimes around the 3rd. The team gets crushed by 15-20pts margin in that disastrous quarter, and they end up losing games despite outscoring the opponents in the rest of the game.
The issue with this team is, well, there is not a player who can stand up and stop the bleeding. NBA teams are all capable of initiating runs, the Nets just aint good at stopping it once the opposing teams get it started. Poor leadership maybe, but sure the Nets lack a goto guy at this point. The players just stare at each other speechlessly, and no one is able and willing to take the responsibility to be a savior. Deron is supposedly this type of guy on our team, and apparently he hasnt been doing this. Joe Johnson gets isoball at times, but you know he aint that good enough to be a goto guy. The Nets actually are a good fit for him, 'cause Joe Johnson really is not a leader material.
So how do we fix this problem? I dunno, the answer ultimately lies in Deron Williams. If he is able to fully heal during the offseason and come back like Melo did this season, we'd be right back on track. Otherwise it will be a disappointing season again next year. I wont call this season a failure so long as they make playoffs and take it to at least 6 games in 1st round, but I doubt how much patient the owner has with this team if its all the same crap next year.
We can make some trades to get better, Humphries expiring contract is enticing but let's not be way too optimistic about this. Remember what happened during Dwightmare?
Re: Nets one-quarter collapse phenomenon
It's about mental toughness. Every team in the NBA goes on 8-0 run or 12-2 run. The Nets allow a rare type of beating to occur to them though. They completely collapse in one selective quarter (usually second or third) and get blown out by 15-25 just in that one quarter alone. We know that if a team went on a run against the Heat, LeBron or Wade would take charge and stop the bleeding and change the momentum. We've had Deron, Joe and Brook try to take charge when things are going bad, but the game only gets worse. The Nets should not EVER ****ing face a 20 point whooping in one quarter alone. Yet, they have faced a 20 point quarter whooping more times than I can remember. All of the Nets losses except two or three have been because of a double digit deficit quarter.
We need the bench to come out and give the first punch in the second quarter and we need our starters to come alive in the third quarter. Particularly Deron Williams. Gerald needs to assert himself 200% more on the offense end. The Nets didn't envision giving him 40 million for just defense. Which is not like he's a lock down defender. He needs to drive and slash to the basket like he's capable of doing and post up a bit more and run some Hi-Low with Brook. The scouting report on him right now is " Leave Wallace open and never double team, instead, sag a bit close to Deron, Joe or Brook because Wallace isn't a scoring threat". We can't fork over 40 million for a non-threat type player on the offensive end. We need 15 a night from him.
And Deron has some serious ground to me up. Stack publicly insulted him badly saying how the offense is much better without him and saying Joe should demand the ball more. What a ****ing prick. Why is Stack slyly whispering in Joe's ear telling him to "demand the ball more". Nonetheless, Deron needs to start creating easier shots for Joe and others. Joe was super, super efficient against the Nuggets and that was all on ball movement and open shots from passing. We need Deron to do that for him too.
