Payton Will Not Return To Heat
In the MIAMI HERALD, “Veteran guard Gary Payton is not expected to return to the Miami Heat next season. Heat coach Pat Riley said Thursday that while the 17-year veteran Payton is unlikely to return, the team has interest in signing free agent forward P.J. Brown and are hoping to re-sign forward James Posey. Payton averaged 6.6 points in two seasons with Miami, and helped the Heat win the 2006 NBA title. Payton said several times last year that he's considering retirement, but the nine-time All-Star hasn't decided, yet.”

As sad as it is to see Gary Payton end his fine career as a becoming somewhat of a journeman-type player. I did see his offense and defense prowless decline tracking back most noticibly to his move to LA. I'm glad
however he did get his ring as a member of the Heat which he has deserved as much as any player who has played the game. I can easily see him ending up in another reserve role on a championship caliber team. My only question is Penny Hardaway over Gary Payton? What? Is it just that Penny isn't getting a guaranteed contract?

payton only joins teams that he thinks would have a chance to get him a ring.. i guess the fact that he's leaving means he thinks miami is going down the hole.. payton leaving is NOT a good sign

As much as I love seeing him on the floor, he wouldn't be much use to us now, but we all know how much Riley loves to play old players.
