"Myles Brand and the NCAA created the environment for the O.J. May situation when they accepted the NBA age limit."
Thats a quote from an article regarding the whole OJ Mayo fiasco. For those of you who don't know, Mayo has been taking money since high school from Rodney Guillory who supposedly worked for the sports agent, Bill Duffy. If people are looking to blame the NCAA for doing what they thought would be right, then they have problems or are just plain ignorant. No one can blame Mayo's situation on anyone else but Mayo. Would Mayo, going directly to the NBA, make him a better person by breaking the rules regardless? Mayo has to step up and to the plate and admit he was wrong and the NBA should punish him but suspending him for half or a whole season. If no harsh punishments are enforced, then this will be a growing epidemic in the NCAA.
NBA is not, nor can they punish somebody for something that happened in the NCAA... it's up to the NCAA to clean their house not the NBA... get a clue...
as for Mayo and what's going on maybe we should wait to find out if there's any truth to these claims before the public passes judgement on him
Mayo could have went to Europe or the NDBL, and not broken those rules. OJ Mayo= the next Isaha Rider.
Dude its not that deep. If it is true, then him getting a few extra perks isn't even against the law. Lebron James in HS got so much sh*t that if the 19yo rule was put into place, there's no way NCAA would allow him in. He's still a good guy and in no trouble.
I like OJ, he's gonna be a stud in the pros. With his skills and his size, the sky is the limit. With a bit of fine tuning he could legitimately play pg in the NBA
does anybody remember when oj went to usc against the advice of his mother? and they said it was because some1 that was a "mentor" to him had told him to go there but oj said it was all his decision? wasnt that guillory? i believe the story. i dont want to because i like mayo and i wont think less of him because of this. im not going to blame a 19 year old kid for accepting money because why would he turn that down? but guillory has done this before with tito maddux and jeff trepagnier. theres just something in that that says this is true.

You do understand how ****ed up mentally JR Rider was?
If O.J. Mayo showed any signs during his high school career or even his 1 year of college that he is the next JR Rider, few teams would consider drafting him.
Although JR was a good player in the NBA,the mess he brought with him back then would definetly not be tolerated in the NBA now.
This type of stuff happens to all big athletes at every school (Beasley in K State really?!?!?!)...I just think its most extravagant at USC...Dont think its a big knock on Mayo's character who's to tell an 18 year old kid not to take all of that money when it really won't do anything to him and usually these guys come from very financially unstable backgrounds

In all seriousness,O.J. should've gone to Kansas State.
Rider has been arrested for grand theft and kidnapping. Mayo is nowhere near that bad. Players like Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard and Chris Webber took $ in college. This isn't a concern for the NBA at all.

No it doesn't.
Beasley went to K State because of him and his family's very close relationship with one of their assistant coaches that Bob Huggins brought over from Charlotte where Beasley originally commited to.
This type of thing to this extent where we're talking about over $5,000 is rare to see happen in college basketball, there hasn't been a big time college player to be dismissed or found to be taking gifts from an agent since Tito Maddox if you consider him a big time college player.
This identically similar to Chris Webber's situation at Michigan,Webber like Mayo had been receiving money since he was in 9th grade.
The L.A. Times came out with a piece on O.J. Mayo today, a story that is kind of interesting because of how difficult it was for the reporter, Diane Pucin, to set up the interview. She eventually sat down with Mayo, but got some bad advice in the beginning when she went through Rodney Guillory.
That's where my little side story comes in:
Guillory, you might recall, has long been a Southern California-based confidant of Mayo's. He was often present at the D1 Greyhounds' hotel when they traveled the country as an AAU team and would introduce Mayo to celebrities and such. When Mayo was a junior, I tried to set up and interview with him and got a call back from Guillory (who up to that point, I had never met in person or via phone) who told me he was O.J.'s manager. That didn't go over well with Dwaine Barnes, Mayo's "guardian" who complained to me -- back when he still spoke to me -- a few times about Guillory's influence over Mayo because of the way Guillory seemed to lavish Mayo whenever Guillory was at the same tournament as the Greyhounds.
I'm a little suprised then that Guillory's presence in Mayo's life since Mayo became a big-time hoops star hasn't come under more scrutiny at USC. Guillory, as it is well known in hoops circles, is a former "runner." By that, I mean he cost former Fresno State player Tito Maddox eight games in 2000-01 because Guillory, who was indirectly representing the Las Vegas sports agency Franchise Sports, paid for Maddox' plane ticket to Las Vegas while he still played for Fresno. Maddox later estimated to receiving a total of about $30,000. Guillory was only directly implicated in the one plane ticket, but he was friends with the Franchise Sports crew.
Guillory has also been affiliated with Reebok as a street agent in the past, and that was said to be his role with Mayo according to the Dwaine Barnes camp. Guillory stopped return my calls two summers ago when I started asking him what his interest in Mayo was. Mayo listed him at the time as "the most impressive person he'd ever met," in a progam for an international event in San Diego. Barnes said that was another power play of Guillory's, designed to make the shoe companies take notice that if they wanted access to Mayo, they'd have to go through Guillory first.
I'm not saying that Mayo did anything or accepted anything to compromise his collegiate eligibility. I don't know that for a fact. But I do know that the presence of Rodney Guillory -- who the Times reports is a regular around the USC locker room -- raises questions that someday the NCAA might want answered.
