Well its really, really good at what it is trying to do. However, it is not a typical rail shooter like House of the Dead or Virtua Cop. It is much slower paced and you have to really work to conserve your ammo. Instead of spray and prey, you focus on dismembering the enemies. Blowing off an arm, leg, or even their head won't take them out. You will have to shoot off nearly everything to kill the enemies.
You have a basic rivet gun that does not run out of ammo but its weak and only initially holds five shots. You can hold up to four weapons at once and there is a good variety that are fun to mix and match. Every gun has an alternate firing mechanism that you use by twisting the Wiimote sideways. Some of these alternate shots are charge shots. You also have a telekinesis power to grab things. You can upgrade the weapons by grabbing small targets in the levels. You also have a freeze thing you can use to hold enemies and dismember them.
The game is also full of cut scenes that really flesh out the largest story I have ever scene in a rail shooter. I thought it was fairly well written and interesting enough to get me to want the first Dead Space on my PS3.
You can unlock a spoken word comic book that gives even more back story to what is going on.
There are some challenge modes if you want to get high scores but there are no online leader boards which is just lazy as hell on EAs part.
You can get it now for $30 which I think is a much more acceptable price for th amount of content and I highly recommend it, especially if you liked the first DS. Just know its not like an arcade run and gun rail shooter going in.
If you want that you are better off with House of the Dead. If you want something different from the typical light gun game that is more story based, this is the one.
Also, if you buy Tatsunoko vs Capcom Ultimate AllStars from Toys R Us, you get $15 off a ton of Wii titles. That means you could pick up DS for just $15 if TvsC is something you think you would like.
Just got this today and its a great fighter. If you like the Capcom vs series you will like this. The controls are a little different b/c they simplified it to only 3 buttons for attacking but it actually works really well once you get past the initial shock. It has crazy super attacks from anime characters I have never seen before. Its just a really, really good fighter. Online has been good so far too. You can instant friend people you dont know as rivals so you dont need to worry about friend codes. I only had lag in one match but everyone else I have played was fine. (12 other matches, 5 different people, you can also instant rematch)
