Default What was Jay Williams potential before the motorcycle accident?

Drafted #2 overall in the 2002 draft behind Yao Ming. Was drafted ahead of guys like Amare Stoudemire and Caron Butler. I remember watching him at Duke (even though I was about 13) and thinking he was going to be a great NBA pg. Went on to average 26 mpg, 9.5 ppg, 4.7 apg, and 1.1 steals as a rookie for Chicago. Sadly it was his only season. He's now an analyst for college basketball on ESPN.

What was the potential of him before he got hurt? Could he have been a top 10 NBA pg? Top 5 eventually? An all-star?

He would have been a solid starting PG in the league for years.

I think his athletecism was always underrated. He did some things at Duke that made my jaw drop a few times.

he wouldve been one of the three great young pgs (paul, deron, jay). he was talented but mostly very smart (on the court obviously)

If Jay Williams didn't get injured, then there wouldn't be no Kirk Hinrich or maybe even Derrick Rose on the Bulls!

meh...probably a Top 5 PG in the league around now.

I hate thinking about the Jay Williams tragedy. In my opinion, he definitely would've been up there with CP3 and D-Will. It's really a damn shame. Worst thing to happen to the Bulls since Jordan and Phil left.

He seems like a stand up guy too, except for the whole breaking the rules of his contract thing.

If he was still playing I could see him being a 17/9 kind of guy. Had good size for a pg too (6'2", 195). But his basketball IQ was so high. I was pulling for him when he tried to make his comeback. Glad to see he still has a job with the game he loves, even if it's not playing.

LOL@ this statement

Ahem. I think you're forgetting Elton Brand, who was actually putting up 18/10 numbers. but was traded to the clips for Tyson Chandler.

He would have been an above average guard, but not a superstar. Another Dukie who wouldn't have lived up to the college hype.

The '02 draft was a pretty weak one, but who wouldn't rather have Amare, Caron, or even Tayshaun, then Jay?

Crawford outplayed him. And for some stupid reason Cartwright refused to play the 2 of them together so Williams minutes were spotty, and his play reflected it.

What Rose is doing right now is what I though Williams was going to do that season. Never happened.

He's still one of the top 10-15 college players that I've ever seen since I started watching.(nearly 20 years) I can remember that crazy comeback against Maryland like it happened last weekend.
