Tonight - FOX 26 Sports Exclusive – Wells May Sign With Rockets

Last Edited: Monday, 18 Sep 2006, 8:14 PM CDT Created: Monday, 18 Sep 2006, 5:56 PM CDT

Free agent guard Bonzi Wells arrived in Houston this afternoon to meet with Rockets General Manager Carroll Dawson and head coach Jeff Van Gundy. An eight year veteran, Wells says he could sign with Houston within the next 48 hours.

“I could. I definitely could. It’s up to the organization. I would want to sign depending on how everything worked out,” Wells told FOX 26’s Mark Berman.Wells knows wherever he goes he would probably be signing a one-year contract.

“Hopefully we will have good news for each other. We are going to be talking about the situation and the possibility of me playing here (this) year,” said Wells. “Houston would be a good spot for me to make my home. They have a great team. Hopefully they will give me an opportunity to come here and play my game.”

During his career, Wells has averaged 12.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.3 assists a game.“They already have what they need with Yao and Tracy McGrady. Hopefully I can come and be a good teammate. With Yao and Tracy there that would make my life a whole lot easier because I would have a whole lot of open shots and the lane would be wide open for me with those getting most of the attention.”

Wells, who played most in Sacramento last year, acknowledges that Denver and Miami are also possibilities if nothing works out here in Houston.
For more on this developing story and Wells’ exclusive interview with FOX 26 Sports’ Mark Berman, join us for Fox 26 News at Nine tonight.

If Bonzi performs like he did in this year's playoffs this would be a great signing for the Rockets.

A TMac, Yao, Battier and Bonzi core is not shabby at all.

ok, this is not going to be the Bonzi who owned the spurs for 6 games, get that through. I don't think I know another baller who plays for money more than the game. the guy was due for a paycheck, he stepped up his game. now he's about to get one...pretty simple.

Uhhh, if Bonzi were looking to get paid, he wouldnt even consider coming to Houston. We have absolutely nothing to offer him in terms of monetary reward.

C-Yao
PF-Battier(even though I dont think he can play PF effectively)
SF-Tmac
SG-Wells
PG-Alston

Thats one hell of a starting line-up.

He's not going to get one this off-season. If he signs for Houston, the most he can sign for is 2.1 million dollars/ 1 year deal, unless the Kings agree to a S & T(which they most likely wont because they're approaching the tax, and wil be reluctant to to any dealing/helping a West playoff contending Team).

That same Bonzi in the post-season this past season might very will be showing up. He still trying to get the paper...

I don't think he'll end up signing here, honestly. Just a gut feeling, probably influenced by the Mike James fiasco.

However, it does seem like a perfect fit for him. He'll get his minutes for sure, and if he does well he'll get his contract next year. No skin off the Rockets' back...they just rent him for a season. If he doesn't perform so well that other teams jump at him for serious money, I'm pretty sure the Rockets would be more than willing to re-sign him for the full MLE.

DAMNIT WHY DO THE ****ING MALOOFS HAVE TO BE ****ING CHEAPSKATES !? ****.

God that is going to be a good team though, Bonzi's still going to be lookin for the money. Before he got injured when we sucked he averaged 15 points and 8 boards. Alston/Wells/TMac/Battier/Yao is basically unguardable.

Geoff Petrie do you want to get pushed out of the playoffs? Goddamn he is a ****ty GM and the Maloofs are fkn cheapskates, **** em.

I'd still rather use the trade exception to get a PF that can backup both the 5 and 4. Bonzi would add a starter into our backcourt but I have a feeling he won't have the best relationship with JVG.

Basically how I feel too. I've been disappointed too many times by this front office lately. No way I'm going to start plugging Bonzi into any depth charts until he signs on the dotted line.

So for the time being, I'm hopeful yet pessimistic.
