Default Lions fire Rod Marinelli

Quote:
The Lions fired coach Rod Marinelli today, one day after becoming the first NFL team to go 0-16.

Owner William Clay Ford also promoted Tom Lewand to team president and Martin Mayhew to general manager, according to a news release.

Lewand was chief operating officer. Mayhew has served as general manager since Matt Millen was fired as president three games into the season. He was assistant general manager before Millen’s firing.

Defensive coordinator Joe Barry, assistant offensive line coach Mike Barry and secondary coach Jimmy Lake also were fired, and defensive line coach Joe Cullen’s contract will not be renewed.

Offensive coordinator Jim Colletto was reassigned to offensive line coach.
Assistant director of pro personnel Dave Boller will not be retained.

The Lions went 10-38 under Marinelli. They started 6-2 last season and seemed on the verge of turning things around, but went 1-23 since.

Who the hell fires their 0-16 coach. Dont they know that coach did something that no other coach in the history of the NFL did??? Rod is a great coach. Last season they started off at a terrible 6-2 record, then he turned things around for Detroit and went 1-23 ever since. Hats off to Rod and hopefully he'll get a better job somewhere else.

Sad to see that happen to Rod, he's a great guy. It really wasn't his fault though. Matt Millen ran the franchise into the ground and didn't supply good players with the exception of their wide receivers. However, you can have the best wide receivers in the world but they won't do you any good unless you have a QB that can get it to them - Kitna and Orlovsky are not those guys. They looked like they could've turned it around with Culpepper but he apparently got injured.

Maybe after this year, they'll overhaul their coaching staff (Mangini is available), and draft someone like Tim Tebow to get their franchise turned around.

It isn't fully on Marinelli that this team did what it did. That problem was taken care of earlier… Matt Millen. Thing is it was 4 years too late.
I tip my hat to Rod for taking EVERY bullet shot at this joke franchise and being an upstanding gentleman with out throwing one single person under the bus. It was terrible that the media kept probing him to the brink of insanity and would keep trying to get him to place blame on people so they could have stories to write about and talk about
Rod stood his ground his whole tenure here…

But in the light of things, IF new management is hired in, they will likely fire Rod anyways and bring in their own guy. Just like Millen fired Moeller and hired *gasp* Marty Mornhinwheg!

Neverless, Rod Marinelli is free from the football prison the Millen built…
