Exclamation AllNetCast - Los Angeles Clippers (18-58) at Los Angeles Lakers (60-16) Game Thread

Quote:
The Los Angeles Lakers have dominated the Western Conference this season, but that’s not enough for a franchise hungry for its first NBA championship in seven years.

The Lakers take a seven-game winning streak against the Los Angeles Clippers into Sunday night’s home game as they try to make a push toward the league’s best record.

Back from a seven-game road trip, the Lakers (60-16) improved to 32-5 at home with Friday’s 93-81 win over the Houston Rockets - their second straight victory following a pair of losses to end March. They achieved the 60-win plateau for the first time since going 67-15 in the 1999-2000 championship season, coach Phil Jackson’s first with the franchise.

“We have to make an attempt for (the league’s best record),” Jackson said. “I wouldn’t feel good about it, even with these players, if we didn’t. We really don’t have to threaten our well-being by doing it, I don’t think.”

The Lakers trail Cleveland by one game for the league’s best record, which ensures home-court advantage throughout the playoffs.

Kobe Bryant’s first-quarter technical foul against the Rockets proved he isn’t just coasting through the final few regular-season games.

“I wanted to send a message to my teammates and to the referees that we’re here to play, we’re not going to be out here just kind of going through the motions,” said Bryant, the only player who has been with the Lakers the entire time since their last title in 2002. “If a guy’s going to grab my shirt, I’m going to let you know about it. It’s important to come out with a sense of urgency right from the top. We’re fighting for a bigger prize.”

Bryant is averaging 20.3 points in three matchups with the Clippers this season, but he hasn’t had to put up gaudy numbers as the Lakers have won by an average margin of 22.3.

In the Pacific Division rivals’ last matchup on Jan. 21, Bryant recorded his 16th career triple-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists.

Teammate Pau Gasol is seeking his ninth double-double in 10 games.

The struggling Clippers (18-58) return to Staples Center for what’s technically a road game looking to snap a four-game skid. Saturday’s 120-104 defeat at Denver was the Clippers’ 23rd road loss in their last 26 away from home.

Zach Randolph posted his 28th double-double of the season with 22 points and 12 rebounds for the injury-plagued Clippers, who had only nine players available.

Randolph will face the Lakers for the first time this season. Acquired from the New York Knicks on Nov. 21, the power forward missed the Clippers’ Jan. 21 loss with a sore left knee.

The Clippers won’t have to face Lakers center Andrew Bynum (torn left MCL), who scored a career-high 42 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in the teams’ last matchup, but they also likely won’t have their own starting center. Marcus Camby has missed three straight games with a sprained left ankle.

The Clippers have not defeated the Lakers since a 118-110 win April 12, 2007.

The clippers have way too many problems on their team to just suddenly "turn it on".

Whether lakers struggle or not, mark my words we will walk away victorious from tonight's matchup. Anyways clippers are trying to get a number 1 pick again...they won't try to decrease their chances by beating a championship caliber team.

edit: we're only one game behind cleveland? Had no idea...pull it off lakers!

Clippers may but bad but when both Baron Davis and Zach Randolph are on they can be very dangerous.

If Cavs lose to the Spurs this afternoon you should see a motivated L.A squad..one can hope anyway.

LAL by 11. We've to come out prepared though. In the same mentality as the Cavs did against SA. Games like these shouldn't be given away.

Go lakes! I want this one for keeping pace with the cavs who just dismembered the spurs, but mainly for this:

Tuning into the game at a commercial break to see the score, the first thing I hear is the cavs public address is rocking Rick Astley...

It is BAD getting rick rolled by Cleavland.

I cast "Parents just don't understand" back at the cavs baybe!

The Lakers should be able to pull this one off. I do still worry however about the Clippers trying to play "spoiler" against us. They have nothing to lose so why not try hard to make our record worse??

Let's GO LAKERS!!!!!!!

Scouting Report Lakers vs Clippers
Sunday, Apr 5

With last night’s 120-104 loss in Denver the Clippers stretched their current losing streak to five games. The last time we played the Clippers (January 21st) we beat them 108-97. Andrew Bynum had 42 points and 15 rebounds but gave up a career night to Deandre Jordan with Jordan getting 23 points on 11-12 shooting. In that game we had 70 points in the paint to 50 for the Clippers and we had 34 second chance points to the Clippers 13. It is important that we come out of the gate with the mentality to dominate early in a similar fashion. If we jump on them early hopefully we can take away their motivation to compete for the full 48. The Clippers have a lot of talented, explosive individuals but because of injuries this season have not been able to sustain a positive flow. Because of these injuries and missed games they have started 3 guards and gone to small lineups in their last couple of games. We must not allow one or two of their individuals to bust out and have big nights.

Coach Dunleavy likes to start quarters and come out of timeouts with 2 plays that they don’t call. If Jordan is in the game we need to be aware that they like to run lobs for him. Since one of our goals is to eliminate easy points we can start by taking away the lobs. We also need to contain their guards as they are a good penetrate and pitch team. One of the plays that they ran frequently last night at Denver is one called “12” or “12 LIVE”. On their regular 12 action the point dribbles to the wing and the wing then goes and sets a cross screen for Zach Randolph. They feed the post and space the floor. On 12 Live the point passes to the wing and then sets the cross screen himself. The live part refers to the fact that the wing has a live dribble to use if he needs it. We know Randolph has had some huge games against us in the past so we must be ready to mix up our defensive coverages to keep him guessing.

Offensively, we need to recognize that we should go inside-out against this team. Randolph doesn’t want to expend a lot of energy on the defensive end so we must go at him.

The bottom line is that we should not take this game for granted. In order to continue improving towards the playoffs we need to keep our focus on our game. We need to play a solid, low turnover game and stay strong on the boards and inside.
