Default 2009 Tarheels or 2005 Tarheels?

I had an argument with a coworker during lunch today over which team is better. He graduated from Carolina, so I figured he'd be knowledgeable enough to make an assessment. Anyway, he believes the 2009 Tarheels are a way better team than in 2005 because because they had better players, a better bench, and that Tyler Hansbrough/Ty Lawson is a "way better" duo than May/Felton.

My retort is that the 2005 UNC team had to face a tougher conference that year in which that Duke team was just as strong as this years. It had to face a MSU in the Final Four that I still believe to be better than this year's MSU, and an Illinois team that prior to the championship had only lost 1 game the entire season. In the aftermath, 4 players went lottery in a strong draft year. This 2009 team will be lucky to have 1 lottery pick and that'll be Lawson and this year's draft isn't as strong. Hansbrough is projected to be a late first rounder/early second and Ellington is definitely a second round pick. Ed Davis looks like he'll be a stud one day, but this year he did not look better than Marvin Williams in 2005.

What are your thoughts? Apologize if I seem a bit disconnected in presenting my case, typing fast cause I have to get back to something.

I don't even feel it's necessary to go into this.

2005 was WAY WAY WAY better than this year's team.

Felton > Lawson

McCants > Ellington

May > Hansbrough

2005 bench >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 2009 bench

It's so obvious.

I think i'll go with Ellington over McCants but as for Felton and Lawson i'll go with Felton.

Hansbourgh > May

Absolutely not, and that team was not WAY WAY WAY better. Maybe a little bit.

I'd probably say 2009. This year's UNC team made all the tournament teams look like Division 2. Beat a good Gonzaga team by 21 (while dropping 98 points), a good Oklahoma team by 12, Nova by 14, and won the championship by 17. No team ever gave them a challenge. They had 4 losses this year and 3 of those were by 3 points (1 in OT).

As far as a college team goes I would take..

Hansbrough over May
Green over Jawad Williams
Lawson/Felton a push
M. Williams over Ed Davis

and I know McCants was good but Ellington was the Final Four MVP. That'd be a tough pick.

Could go either way. Give me '09.

2005 NC is an all generation team. They would have beaten two other all decade teams in '08 Kansas and '08 Memphis. This '09 NC team would get their ass handed to them by last year's two finalist.

I even have video proof. lol

I agree with hippos, 2005 is a team that clearly is better and had to face a lot more competition than this 2009 team. They're virtually the same team they were last year and struggled against Kansas/Memphis while 2005 would've held their own.

Are we talking who was the better team as far as the whole season, or who we would pick in a hypothetical head to head match up? It's two different things, IMO. I still think 2005 was better in both cases, but a single game between the two would be a lot closer than most people think. I think the big 3 for each team are relatively equal. Felton and Lawson are basically the same player, McCants was definitely more talented than Ellington, and May was better on the block than Hansborough but didn't have his range or hustle. In a way, Marvin Williams would have been the biggest problem for 2009 to handle. None of their post players are fast enough to handle him on the perimeter or face-up post game, and their guards are too small. Williams would eat Danny Green for lunch in the post, and take Stephenson/Davis outside. Other than that, it would be fairly close. You have to account for that Hansborough in the high post would have caused major problems for May. Great college post player, not so much on the quick feet or defense.

Do you really think 08 Kansas and 08 Memphis were the two best teams of this decade after 05 UNC?

The Florida two-peat team was stacked, and beat some really good teams. I would pick them over either Kansas or Memphis. As a dark horse, although they were not consistently that amazing, 03 Syracuse was a really talented team that was built for the tournament.

I don't think they were the best two. There are a few all decade teams.

Those early 2000's Duke teams. '05 NC. The Florida mini-dynasty. '05 Illinois. The two '08 finalists.

Juan Dixon's Maryland teams played with a ton of heart so don't forget about them either. Blake, Dixon, Wilcox, Baxter.

Florida 06, 07
Uconn 99, 04
Kansas 08
UNC 05
Duke 99, 01
MD 02
Illinois 05
Cuse 03
MSU 2000

These teams make up the All decade team. Florida 07 and UNC 05 I'd say most people would agree are the top 2 teams of this decade. I know Duke 99and Illinois 05 didnt win the title but they were great no?

It was a great team Along with the Maryland and Oregon teams of that year.

I'll take:

Chalmers
Robinson
Rush
Arthur
Jackson

With Collins and Kaun coming off the bench. The defense was pimp too.
