Default Cuban Agrees; Stop sending NBA players to Olympic Basketball.

I've made a couple threads about how Olympic Basketball is bad for the NBA, and it's players. Recently, Dirk Nowitzki came out and said that not having to play for his home country Germany during the summer has improved his NBA game. Similar statements were made by Carmelo Anthony earlier in this season.

Apparently, European Soccer leaders have agreed that they will not be sending any of their top players to the Olympics in the future, and will instead send only their under 21 players. This was actually already the case in the last Olympics, where you saw very few Soccer stars playing for their Country in Beijing.

Cuban takes a slightly different angle on the arguement, claiming that Olympic organizers are greedy bastards; only concerned with the BILLIONS in revenues they make off of having NBA stars perform in the Olympics for free. He also touches on my main point, that fans of the NBA want to see NBA players from all countries playing at 100% during the NBA season.

Cuban goes on to state that we should develop an independent World Competition for Basketball (like the World Cup), where competetive fairness would be placed above profit, and the profits that are made will be shared amongst the contestants (instead of the Olympic Commitees reaping all the rewards).

As I've stated before (with lots of backlash), having NBA players playing all year is ridiculous. Every summer there is practice for the Olympics, practice for the World Championships, practice for your franchise... it's all just too much. Eliminate NBA players playing in the Olympics and World Championships, and let the young players (under 21) represent their Countries. If we really want a stage to display the elite Basketball Players from each country, let's organize something like the World Cup every 4 years.

I agree. I honestly would not be too fond of the idea of my team's star player (Brandon Roy) playing in the Olympics. Yet at the same time, I want the US to win.

Poor NBA players. Playing all year a game they love and for free too. How will they feed their families?

End sarcasm.

At the end of the day, nobody FORCES them to play. You don't want to play? Fine. Just don't. Simple as that.

Don't underestimate the social pressures placed on these players to compete for their countries.

Look at it from Cuban's perspective. His biggest asset, Dirk Nowitzki, wears himself out every summer playing for the German Olympic team and maybe isn't 100% when the regular season begins. In addition, he risks injury every time he steps out onto the court. What if Dirk gets hurt? Cuban's business is screwed. We saw it happen last year with guys like Ginobili. So there is significant risk for the players and for the owners and for the fans of the NBA who want to see players at 100%, and all of the reward (profits) goes to the Olympic Committee.

As far as national pride is concerned, this is why Cuban is advocating for a World Cup-like approach to international basketball. I don't think he is anti-international basketball per se but anti-Olympics. He thinks the Olympics are driven by greed. Soccer is the most successful international sport, so don't tell me that their model wouldn't work. Having a big international tournament every 4 years like the World Cup would actually be amazing. I'm drooling at the thought of it.

IMO, the FIBA World Championship Tournament is already the World Cup of basketball. It's a tournament where nationals teams from all continents compete in.

It's just that the Olympics is still the most prestigeous tournament for international basketball. For football, on the other hand, the World Cup is the most high profile.

And both sports have different international tournaments during non-Olympic years, like Eurobasket/UEFA Euro, World Championships/World Cup, etc.

For non-Americans, there is an international tournament to compete in every summer. It's just up to the players if they want to play in these tournaments. Garbajosa sacrificed his NBA career to play for Spain.

It's seems like players outside of America just have a different attitude towards playing for their countries. It's the highest honor for them.

What does a guy like Cuban get out of this? If he's paying Dirk $15 million dollars a year (or whatever, I don't know how much Dirk makes) and he gets injured playing in international play .. then Cuban is ****ed. Cuban isn't making any money by having his employee go overseas to play basketball.

True this. The choice is:

a. to play.

b. not to play, have your family harassed and home media crucify you.

It's almost they're forced to play

I don't buy this argument. I think the reality is that until the U.S. started losing, Americans didn't care if our best players competed in Olympics / WC Basketball. Once we started losing, American citizens wanted our best players to compete... and for the most part, they did.

I think International players have more social pressure to compete than American players. Dirk, for example, is the only hope Germany has. If he doesn't compete, they won't win anything... and thus the pressure for him to compete for his country is immense. However, as I stated earlier, Dirk decided not to play for his Country in this off-season, and according to him, it has improved his NBA performances.

We may have been robbed of many years of excellent play by Yao Ming due to his country's insistence that he play internationally for their team.
