The only way he might even come close to being worth it is if they plan on playing him in CF and he does well there otherwise, not a chance.

$17million for a very good (but not great) LF is insane.


I guess the Jays better start looking for Vernon Wells trades because the price for him likely just shot up to $14-16million per year.

Nah MLB superstars fetch bigger paychecks than NBAers normally. We have them beat in the pay of our average starters and fringe players only.

It's a lot of money but its not really "overpaid". They have been saying he would get in the $14-$17 million range since he got to DC. He got the top end of his expected market value.

Hes had a 317 obp the last 2 years... Hes a bad fielder at a position with very little defensive value... This is definitely overpaid...

His range may have been 14-17mil but 8yrs is the killer. Anything over 6yrs isnt a good deal.

He's a 40/40 threat every year. Was in the top 10 for HR's, R's, SLG, and SB's last season. Plus, he lead all Major League LF's in Put Outs with 326.

I'm not arguing that you should feel he's worth $17 million. I'm simply pointing out that the market value for Soriano has been at $14-$17 million all year.

It's not the per year pay rate that's nutty, it's the length of the deal for a player of his age. Only way he's worth it when he's 40 is if he hooks up with BalCo.

I can't argue with this. I didn't think he'd get 8 years either.

He has a good off-season work ethic but I didn't think people would sign a 30 year old gut to a 8 year deal.
