The New England Patriots placed defensive end Ty Warren on season-ending injured reserve, the team announced Friday.

"We knew a little while ago that there was a possibility that it would be for a longer period of time," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said of Warren's injury, which the team confirmed is to his hip.

The injury further depletes a position at which Warren was the Patriots' best player.

"Tough break for Ty, but we have to move on," Belichick said. "He's missed quite a bit of time the last couple of years. ... It's unfortunate, but unfortunately, that's part of the game. So we just move ahead."

Warren, a seven-year NFL veteran, has started 92 of 105 games since the Patriots selected him in the first round of the 2003 draft. He has recorded 373 tackles, 20.5 sacks and four forced fumbles.

Veteran Gerard Warren, signed during the offseason, started at left defensive end during the Patriots' 27-24 preseason victory over the New Orleans Saints on Thursday night and is a likely candidate to take over.

The Patriots also announced that defensive end Derrick Burgess was reinstated to the active roster Friday after the nine-year veteran stayed away from training camp while considering retirement.

Belichick said Burgess arrived at the Patriots' facility Friday and passed a physical.

Burgess, who started six games and recorded five sacks for New England in 2009, also could be a potential starter in place of Ty Warren.

The team's other defensive ends include Rob Ninkovich and rookies Jermaine Cunningham, Brandon Deaderick and Dane Fletcher.

They reinstated Derrick Burgess because of it, but that's still a big blow to their defensive line. They look pretty damn depleted there at defensive end.
