Default Your weekly preseason team observations

Post what you see from your team after each game of the preseason. Who played well? What needs improvement? Who played horrible? What looks like it may be an issue going into the season? Who surprised you? Which guys are you pulling for to make the team?

I do notice this game was vs. the Jags.

Kevin Kolb - Looked very sharp for the 1st preseason game. Made some precise passes in the pocket and made some throws while rolling out of the pocket, also made some plays to get a first downs with his feet (2 carries, 15 yards). His stats would have been a little more pretty had Celek not dropped a pass in the end zone. 2 of his incompletions he locked onto a receiver from the snap and that's something he can't do. To end on a high note, he played 2 full series leading his team all the way down the field on both and was in the middle of a 99 yard drive on his 3rd series when the 2nd quarter started and the 2nd unit was brought in. DeSean gave his QB a "A plus plus plus" grade.

Starting Defense - Tough to say much. They only played 2 series and forced two 3-and-outs. Bunkley had a nice knockdown at the line, Hobbs and Samuel were probably the most noticeable making some nice wrap up tackles. Garrard and the Jags 1st team came in to play the 2nd quarter vs. our 2nd string because they didn't get any work against the 1st team.

Mike Vick - Made some amazing plays and made some bad ones. One thing that's been talked about is his speed seems to be better than it was last year, something that's been talked about. He had 8 carries for 50 yards and a rush TD. Threw for 119 on 11/17 and hooked up with rookie WR Riley Cooper a couple of times, including his first play of the game. His INT was forced and a big problem for Vick is not knowing when there are defenders behind him. That's where his fumble issues come from.

Austin Howard - Honestly had no idea who the guy was. Had to google him after the game and he's an undrafted guy from Northern Iowa. Found an article from OTA's where Reid said he was the guy he was most impressed with. Played LT last night with the 2nd team and was amazing, pushed Vick into the end zone by himself almost, and had 2 pancake blocks.

2nd String Secondary
- Wow that was hard to watch. Joselio Hanson and Dmitri Patterson looked absolutely horrible. Josh McCown had 2 absolute bombs in the game where the receiver had nobody around him. McCown went 11/15 with 244 yards and 3 TD's (154 QB rating) to give you an idea of how bad it was. Joselio Hanson is in jeopardy of losing his #3 job I would say.

Chad Hall - This is the little 5'7" white guy we signed who seemed like he didn't have a shot in hell to make the team, but he made his presence felt. Played well on both kickoff and punt returns. Had 2 carries for 11 yards and 2 catches for 60 yards. He doesn't even have a set position. He's just one of those guys you pull for.

Kick coverage - Needs serious work. Trevard Lindley stood out the most as a good ST player.

Sidenote: Luckily we got out of this game with the only injury being a sprained knee for Demps.

didnt get to watch the skins but from the looks of a few ESPN highlights, DMc looks great and our receivers dont seem to be a weak point (as they were expected to be). and also, i've learned that Chris Cooley is capable of taking a few big hits and bounce right back up

and our special teams look ok also. it's just preseason though so some stuff is hard to judge.

I've got some games on the DVR I'm going to watch including the Skins game, Bucs/Dolphins, and Titans/Seahawks. I'll probably watch the 1st 2 quarters of each.

Sage Rosenfels wants that job if Favre doesn't come back, and at the very least to be the #2. Tarvaris played with the 1st team and only played 1 series then Rosenfels came in and lit shit up.

Tarvaris Jackson - 2/4, 11 yards
Rosenfels - 19/28, 218 yards, 2 TD's

Aaron Rodgers picked Cleveland apart. 12/13, 159 yards and a TD.

If the vikes want to contend Sage is their QB. You just can't win with a QB like Tavaris Jackson at QB, Rosenfels is a pretty good QB as well. He just needs to not **** it up basically.

Watching Sam Bradford in his 1st preseason game, I observed that he hasn't quite developed the mobillity needed to be a starting QB in the NFL. He also is unaware of how long he has to release the football.

All rookie mistakes that will no doubt be corrected over time..

Tough break for Stafon Johnson. After all he's gone through it sucks to see him go out like this. On top of that he looked really good tonight.

Pumped to finally see some Colts today, even if the starters are only in for one drive or so. Keep an eye on the interior line, Saturday's obviously the starting center but he just got his knee scoped so he'll miss the preseason. They're trying Tony Ugoh at left guard and I believe 08 2nd round bust (to this point) Mike Pollak's taking Saturday's C spot until he's back. Pollak was a center at ASU and was moved to RG and did just horrible, hopefully he can show some value today.

And the return game. It's been a weakness for seemingly forever but this'll be the second year for Ray Rychleski at STC so hopefully he's instilled some of his principles more firmly. Big things coming out of camp about the little return man rookie Brandon James outta Florida.

Just watched 1st QTR of Bills/Redskins (until 1st team came out) and here's some stuff I saw:

- Is Devin Thomas the primary kickoff returner for Washington? Like I said I didn't watch past the 1st QTR to see if he stayed in the whole game, but on the opening kickoff he muffed it and had to fall on it and on his other return he overran it a bit and made the catch behind him before taking a knee in the end zone. He returned some kicks last year but Rock Cartwright had more than him. I'm sure he'll be okay, just an observation.

- I said in Marlo's fantasy thread that Cooley will have a big season with McNabb (I drafted Cooley). There are certain guys who just value their TE's in the league and McNabb is one, Favre being another. Check Chad Lewis before McNabb showed up. He had 28 total catches in 3 seasons before McNabb, 69 in McNabb's first full season. Check LJ Smith...unheard of since he left Philly. Also the big year Celek had. Cooley had 3 of McNabb's first 4 completions (5 total) in the game the other night and was his primary target.

- I'm not familiar with the guy but Kareem Moore on WAS played horrible. Made the most mistakes out of anybody, poor tackling and a facemask penalty to go with it. DeAngelo Hall missed a big tackle in open space on Lee Evans but besides that played very well.

- Trent Williams beasted on whoever was playing DE for Buffalo.

- Roydell Williams had a move after the catch on Terrence McGee that was just filthy.

- Redskins fans will learn to take the good with the bad with McNabb. Looked great when throwing to Cooley and handling the pressure on his TD throw. Looked bad when he overthrew Galloway (how is he still this fast?) who had beat the entire secondary. Also had a ball thrown in the dirt (his trademark) when Moss was wide open. Another thing I've always noticed about McNabb is he's slow to hand the ball off. Skins ran an end-around with Moss and the Bills adjusted just because Donovan was so slow to it.

- CJ Spiller is ****ing fast. Actually the whole trio of Spiller/Jackson/Lynch looked good. Lynch didn't have a carry in the boxscore but had a 20 yard run that was called back for holding. Broke 2 tackles on the play though and looked quick. Caught a pass the next play.

about to watch NO/NE until starters come out...

yes. i believe he and Keiland Williams (Rookie RB from LSU) are the primary returners.

as for the Kareem Moore comment, hopefully Shan will put Chris Horton back in at Safety if Moore is/played that bad. Horton played decent last year with Landry and i hope he gets to start again this year.

agreed. he lit the ACC up last year and was named ACC player of the year. He set the Kick Return record for a College Career (7), he led the ACC in allpurpose yards, and he was the ONLY player to score a TD in every game last year.

the guy is an all-around beast (KR, PR, RB, WR, Wildcat) and he could turn out something along the lines of Chris Johnson imo.

Pats/Saints was hard to watch so this will be short...

- The Pats front 7 looked very, very strong. Jerod Mayo is becoming one of my favorite LB's in the league. If you run it up the middle it's almost a guarantee that he's going to be in on the tackle. He had 5 tackles in just about 1 1/2 quarters. He was absolutely fantastic in pass protection too. Was all over Devery Henderson on a pass over the middle and though Reggie Bush missed the catch he was all over him on another play, would've been 3-4 yard completion at best. Covered Saints TE Thomas very well too. Marques Murrell looked good.

- Pats defensive backs on the other hand weren't quite as good. This could be because they were playing vs. Brees of course but Brees wasn't really on his game. He was throwing behind guys and leading guys a little too much. Butler specifically was playing bad.

- Brady-to-Moss was already working effectively on comeback routes. Porter just couldn't handle Moss.

- Julian Edelman has some crazy moves on punt returns and he's a hard guy to tackle. It's like a guy is controlling him with a PS3 controller and moving the joystick all over. The comparisons to Wes Welker are pretty good. Don't know how much he'll be used in the offense once Welker is back but they like to throw to him in the flats and let him make a guy miss.

I'm a Purdue fan so I kind of made excuses for him last year when he played the majority of the last two games. He's playing with a lot of second stringers against starters I said, he's playing the best D in the league in the Jets I said, he's playing in a blizzard in Buffalo I said. I really want him to succeed and be the next successful Purdue QB in the NFL. But holy shit, he's just awful. He got benched in COLLEGE because he was shitty. He's got a great arm and all that, but he's just dumb. I still can't really believe he got drafted.

Watching Bengals/Broncos on NFL Network...anxiously awaiting Tim Tebow.

Early observations...

- Bengals run blocking looks very strong for Benson all except Gresham

- TO had his first drop as a Bengal. 3rd down play that would have put them at the 12 but went through his hands and the kicker missed the FG

- Champ Bailey got beat on an easy route by Chad. #85 ran a 10 yard comeback route and Champ kept going about 10 feet past him after he made his move and fell.

They were just showing the highlights on NFL Network and one of the guys asked how the Colts could allow Painter to be their backup QB. Mark Brunell was a guy they threw out there that could've been a target but the Jets just signed him. Seems like a huge risk should Manning have to miss a game or 2 for whatever reason.
