My third most anticipated movie of the year behind Norwegian Wood and Inception. Going to be the most intense ballet movie ever.

On the real I can't imagine it will be as good as the book. the book is pretty much the emo manifesto.

Emo manifesto is a huge insult to the book. Jesus Christ.

I don't mean it as a pejorative term. But the book literally embodies emo in every single sense of the word.

The yearning. unrequited love. teenage suicide. loneliness. ambivalence and isolation. mental instability. upper middle class characters. disconnect from traditional establishment. music as vehicle for emotion. etc

The book was somewhat atypical of Murakami's style.

Teenage suicide was just a catalyst for the struggle between the attractiveness of life and death. Isolation and loneliness are also kind of themes Murakami always uses, and I never got the sense that these characters were upper middle class in any way, especially not Midori. Music as a vehicle for emotion, unrequited love, (not really sure if thats really present since Toru loved Midori and Naoko and they loved him back in certain ways) mental instability should really not be attributed to "emo" more than any other subculture that deals with romantic or psychological feelings.

I think the emo tag has a negative connotation whether you like it or not. Many media items associated it deal with feelings of love and other emotions in a very immature and shallow way.

I'd compare it more to a more asian, collegiate version of Catcher in the Rye.

That last line gave me a chuckle vap. As I was reading both your guys' thoughts on the book (which I've never read, and don't really plan on) I was thinking "hmm sounds like catcher in the rye"

just an odd coincidence I thought everyone should know about.

its my most anticipated film of the year(true grit is a close 2nd), aronofsky is my favorite director and imo the most interesting and ambitious high level american film maker. i love the diversity of his subject matter, i love that he takes big risks and has real artistic integrity..
