hey, do any of you guys use GIMP for your illustrating software? I have an issue because I am retarded and basically computer illiterate.
I am trying to make a flow-chart type diagram of a laboratory procedure, but I am having issues with
a) making arrows/linkages between the steps
b) making text boxes with a visible border
any help is appreciated and met with scorn and derision. err, I mean rep.
yeah, gliffy looks like it does everything I need. Thanks. Where did you find these? I am always interested in free software. I can hook you up with some free paleoenvironmental diagram software!!!!!
I use Inkscape for diagrams and layouts I need to create from scratch to be used in publications, because it's free and can output graphics in high resolutions required for most journals.

thanks. Ive looked at Inkscape but havent used it yet. Is it pretty straightforward?
Putting some finishing touches on the ol' dissertation (I defend next wed!).

Good luck with that, I'm sure you'll do fine, and in record time! Bring food and drinks for everyone.
I found Inkscape easy to make diagrams of my sampling plots and flow charts of data collection and analysis. It can do some crazy illustrator stuff, but that looked complicated.
I use GIMP quite frequently for my photo editing needs. I recommend you learn to use it, since it's easy and comes in handy more often than not. Here you are an online manual.
