Default First potentially habitable planet found outside our solar system

http://www.montrealgazette.com/techn...532/story.html

Quote:
Researchers from the University of California Santa Cruz and the Carnegie Institution of Washington said Wednesday the planet has three times the mass of Earth and orbits its star at a distance that places it smack in the middle of the star's "habitable zone" — the vital zone where liquid water could exist on the planet's surface.

Very interesting.

I heard about this before, the problem is that it's 20 light years away from us. Without the use of worm holes us getting to it is very unlikely. Always believed that the odds of there being alien life far outweighs the odds of us being alone.

Just think if there is a planet close enough to us that is observable then that means in the universe there is like gajillions of these planets. More and more it becomes obvious that not only is life not unlikely, but there is probably several planets with life in every galaxy. Too bad we'll never see any of it.

Maybe we will, when we're laying on the table getting ready to lose our butt virginity.

I don't think people always thought we'd be able to see 20 ligh years away either. Anything is possible.

Maybe in like 500 years we'll be able to see these planets with clarity if we're not spending research money on promoting hair growth and prolonging erections, but yeah I meant 'we' as in 'our' generation.

World war 1 ----- to ----- present technology 2010.

Add 200-300 years and if this planet has not been blown to pieces
WE WILL see other planets and probably inhabit them.

If we don't - the human race probably will not exist.

Hell - look at Iran they just created a boat plane

Those prolonged erections might create the scientist that solves the problem of space warp drive

this is pretty cool, like hazard said we're gonna need a worm hole to get us there.

what if there are more humans on the planet

We've made strides, but if you know sociology at all, you'll know that technological growth comes in phases. Right now, were's in the "media phase" oh society, where the main technological growth is advertisements, and information. Stuff like phones and computers are what's being heavily researched. Space travel is not even on the back burner at this point.

Even protecting out own planet from us destroying or overpopulating it is barely on the back burner.

200-300 years. . .I don't think it'll be near that soon. The huge technological advancements between the early 1900's and the late 1900's were huge, but what about the last decade? What advancements have we made besides smaller and better working cell phones? Or better definition on our tvs and steroes.

Planes aren't getting any better. Neither are cars. Just crap like phones and tvs and video games. Media.

Look at the pathetic advancements humanity has made between the 200s and the 1600s. Barely any. :P We just made a quick leap is all. It's leveled off, and is not progressing at the same pace anymore.

If I were to venture the best guess I could for when we'd actually be able to do that. . .it'd be way over 500 years. We're at least 100 years removed from even settling on the moon or whatever, much less some planet that's so far away a human wouldn't be able to travel the distance in their own lifetime with our current means of travel.

The planet itself is not observable. They detect it with radial velocity, basically meaning the gravitational pull of a planet orbiting around it makes the star appear to wiggle ever so slightly.
