Default Walsh "Knicks looking for a Center"

Donnie Walsh: Knicks looking for center

A day after agreeing to a trade for Carmelo Anthony, the New York Knicks might not be done dealing.

Team president Donnie Walsh said he will continue to seek a center through a trade before Thursday's 3 p.m. ET deadline, though he was not optimistic he would be successful.

"We think we moved the rock ahead a little bit, but let's don't get carried away and think now we're challenging Miami, Boston and all these teams. We're just not there yet," said Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni, noting the Knicks biggest needs are size and shooting to replace the departed Timofey Mozgov, Danilo Gallinari and Wilson Chandler.

D'Antoni said Ronny Turiaf would be his center in a starting lineup that will include Amare Stoudemire, Anthony, Landry Fields and Chauncey Billups. Shawne Williams and Toney Douglas (and perhaps Corey Brewer) will be the first players off the bench, with Shelden Williams likely being the big body he plans to use to spell Turiaf and Stoudemire.

D'Antoni also said he will use Anthony at power forward from time to time, though the majority of his playing time will be spent at the small forward position.

The Knicks actually gain experience with the new starting lineup.

Fields has started all season, as has Stoudemire.

Mozgov, who is in his first season in the NBA, had been starting at center recently but had only 14 starts for his career, one more than Turiaf this season.

But by replacing Gallinari with Anthony, the Knicks replace 124 career starts with 564. And by going with Billups at the point, New York gets a veteran with 867 career starts, compared to 423 for Raymond Felton.

If the Knicks make the playoffs, that difference becomes even more striking. Felton has taken part in four playoff games in his career, while Billups has been in 139. Gallinari has never been to the playoffs, while Anthony has played in 45 postseason games.

They were trying to get Camby in the Melo mega deal, but Portland wouldn't budge.

"sources" say.

Earl Barron may be the best that we can do. Hell, what is Jerome Jordan doing right now? Is the season is over in Europe? What do you guys think of signing RIP for the remainder of the year if Detroit buys him out since we need shooting? If not, then D'Antoni needs to dust off Mason and Rautins for spot up duty. Shawne Williams will get some good looks too. With teams not being able to double team with STAT and Melo so the shooters will get some pretty open looks. They just have to knock them down.

If only there was some athletic 7 footer out there who could make free throws and was on a cheap contract.

I can careless if the guy can score 2 points. All I ask for is a big guy who can be a force, someone who can block or challange shots in the paint, grab offensive & defensive rebounds.

I don't get why Barron isn't a Knick regardless.I mean damn,he was getting 11and 11.I dont think Sheldon Williams and Turiaf can get that combined.

The Knicks still need to add a center to offset the loss of Mozgov. They hope to pursue Jared Jeffries if he gets bought out by Houston, former Knicks free agent Earl Barron, or a D-League player. The bigger picture to the trade is having a shot to add a third superstar, either Paul or Utah's Deron Williams in 2012 to compete against Miami's trio of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. New York Post

Alex Kennedy: New York may release someone to sign free agent Earl Barron. If not, the center has garnered interest from Milwaukee and Philadelphia. Twitter

Doesn't really say where Earl is, but I thought the Jared Jeffries mention was interesting.

I would take Jeffries back.

I know I will get killed on here for saying it though.

I liked his ability to back up all three front court spots.

Houston has to buy him out though.

I would like Jeffries back as well.

We all hated him due to his big contract and large minutes he was getting.. He was such a liability on offense, especially when Dantoni would start Duhon and Jeffries we would essentially be playing 3 vs 5 on offense..

But with limited minutes(15) and him just having to play defense he would be great.
