Default Toronto FC 2011 Season Thread

The Year 5th starts today! With the old enemy from the west coast joining the league, the Vancouver Whitecaps!! And the first game with be TFC @ Caps!!

Saturday 19th, TSN, 6PM EST, 3PM WST.

TFC still has DeRo, De Guzman and Frei as the core while the new head coach Aron Winter brings in his Dutch system along with some new foreign players.

Whitecaps has USA national player Jay DeMerit and a good mix of players from the lower league and from an expansion draft.

We will see how the Canadian rivalry goes before Montreal Impact, considering the "real" TFC archenemy, joining the league next year.

Vancouver - Mid-table. They know what they are doing. If Sounders is playoff-bound both years in MLS then Whitecaps certainly can.

Toronto - Could be a bottom feeder or around mid-table depends on how fast they learn the new system, which would take them sometimes. De Guzman will be the key.

TFC 2-0 Timbers

Javiar Martina got himself some new fans today, scoring two goals in a freakin' cold weather.

A BLOCKBUSTER TRADE INVOLVING TFC

Dwayne De Rosario was traded to New York Red Bulls for Tony Tchani, Danleigh Borman and a first round pick in 2012 SuperDraft.

And this is not an April Fools' Day joke.

Well, it's sad to see one of the best players TFC ever have to go, but his age and his contract demand could hurt the team in the long run. TFC will rely on the youth movement for the next 2-3 years. NYRB, on the other hand, now has one of the best starting lineup in the league and looks even stronger as a title contender.

I was at TFC vs Chivas USA game last Saturday. Great weather, good crowd. Looked very close to 20,000 today. 1-1, the final.

It is the first game for Tchani and Borman, who were traded to here for DeRo. Tchani didn't play that well but worked hard to get and control the ball. Borman had some bad passes but handled his defensive jobs pretty well.

Stevanovic, Martina and Alan Gordon are today's starting forward in Winter's 4-3-3. Stevanovic had a good first MLS lesson with a bunch of hits and was later subbed out. Martina was awesome as a right wing forward. Gordon simply did his target man job and got himself a goal in the process.

The second half was almost a snooze fest though until Maicon Santos missed a wide-open goal. Can't blame him though since there was a Chivas defender pressured him right to the ankle.

TFC got a tie away, 1-1, against San Jose Earthquakes. Alan Gordon headed one in again. Julian De Guzman still had to come off the bench since recovering from an injury.

Next up is David Beckham, Landon Donovan and the rest LA Galaxy at BMO Field.

TFC 0-0 Galaxy

At the game yesterday. It was colder than I thought but the game was still pretty good. Posts and crossbars basically saved TFC. Galaxy created much more attacks than TFC but only get a tie. Chad Barett got a clean shot pass Stefan Frei only to hit the crossbar. Becks also bent a nice freekick only to hit the post.

TFC had a bunch of chances also. That small Ecuadorian Juao Plata somehow got a diving header off a last-minutes corner kick but Ricketts saved it.

TFC was raped in the rain yesterday by surging DC United 3-0. Charlie Davies, that US National Team that almost get killed in a car accident, scored again and is now the MLS leading scorer.

Very unusual situation for a soccer game tonight. Because of heavy rain, thunder and lightning, the Canadian Champions League final game #2 between TFC and Whitecaps at BMO Field had to be abandoned and is rescheduled for Thursday morning instead.

The good thing for TFC is that the game stopped at about 60 minutes, and Whitecaps was leading 1-0. The new game will be reset.
